Kyle Anderson and Monte Morris are gone + Timberwolves have Lauri Markkanen interest?

hello and welcome into another episode of lockdown wolves today on the show a pair of Tim wolves free agents sign with other teams sign with other West contenders for that matter we’ll talk about what that means for the Wolves why it really wasn’t surprising overall and then we’ll also reset the roster what do the wolves have to do standing here right now for the rest of the off season what roster spots they have available what are they most likely looking for we’ll also talk about a little bit of a silly rumor but a legit rumor apparently regarding the Wolves interest in a former Western Conference Allstar potentially on the trade market it’s all up coming welcome in you are locked on wolves you are locked on Timberwolves your daily Minnesota Timberwolves podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello and welcome to the locktown Wolves podcast part of the lockdown podcast Network your team every day my name is Ben Beacon I’m the host of locked on wolves today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use the code lockon NBA for $20 off your first purchase terms apply happy Wednesday everybody happy hump day and uh couple couple big news stories in wolves land related to players who were on the team last year that are no longer on the Minnesota Timberwolves we’ll talk about what that is what that roster impact is for Minnesota what’s next in free agency for the Wolves kind of reiterate some of the guys I talked about on Tuesday’s show that I think makes sense still for Minnesota and then we’ll get into uh a bit of a admittedly I think it’s kind of silly because it’s really far-fetched but anytime the wolves are linked by an actual um an actual re live NBA reporter who has sources that it’s not just strictly some you know uh Bleacher Report or whatever website trade we have to talk about names that are thrown out there um especially at this point in the offseason so do that today too about a a western conference All-Star it’s going to be on the graphic here in a second so I’ll just say it Lori Markin in apparently the Jazz we I we mentioned the other day that the Jazz are looking to potentially trade him the wolves have been floated by uh by Jake fiser of Yahoo as somebody a team who may be interested so we’ll talk about that too and why it’s technically feasible but really unlikely to happen so all that today in the show a big thank you here off the top for making lockdown wolves your first listen every day of course this show is free and available everywhere that includes YouTube as well as all of your favorite audio platforms wherever you like to listen to podcast you can find lockon wolves you can also watch on the lockon sports Minnesota app on both Roku and Amazon firetv and you can follow on X at lockon wolves and also at B Beacon with two B’s two e’s cken all right let’s start with the guys that are gone and the first news was Monte Morris and this one was um I don’t know I guess they were equally unsurprising this one hurt though a little bit because of what Monte Morris is getting from the Phoenix Suns first of all he’s going to the Phoenix Suns which is not ideal and second of all he’s getting a minimum contract with the Phoenix Suns and the Wolves can sign their own players minimum contracts but surely what happened here is the Timberwolves straighted up for Rob Dillingham and Monte Morris said all right so even if I start the year as the backup point guard like what’s the path here you’re always going to want to give Dyan ham some playing time and I’m sure that the wolves made a pitch to for to come back at that same deal by saying like hey um they probably didn’t say it this way but basically Finch loves his veterans fin like but no doubt was a hard sell because Monte Morris didn’t consistently get run leading into the playoffs and in the playoffs remember late in the regular season Jordan mlin was actually getting rotation minutes I think game 82 against Phoenix it was actually mlin that played backup point guard minutes and not Monte Morris um so it was Finch was going with what he knew add in that Monte Morris never fully recovered or at least never got into full plane shape and I’m not I’m not blaming him it’s I mean he missed more more than half the season basically with Detroit because of the Quad injury he got he he had suffered last October so he never really got all the way back and the Wolves were asking him to do it on the Fly and then so his playing time wasn’t consistent he was fine when he played but the minutes were limited and then in the playoffs kind of the same deal he played a little bit over mlin for stretches simply because he’s slightly bigger and against really any opponent in the playoffs that’s important and the wolves have a big lineup and so both those guys were smaller than Mike Conley and and ultimately the Wolves spent a lot of time with d Alexander Walker and KY Anderson on the floor initiating offense instead of using mlin or Monte mois so I’m sure the Wolves said hey look Dillingham may not be ready day one and come playoff time he may not be ready either like there may be a sweet spot in there where he plays more than you but we might need you early we might need you late and I’m sure Monte Moore said yeah well they need me now in the whole season and I’m going to be their backup point guard in Phoenix and have big minute opportunities as he heads into really what should be the prime of his career and he just came off of a nice contract and he’s probably got a shot at one more good contract if he has a great year in Phoenix a lot of offensive Talent he can bump those assist numbers get some open threes I get it it makes sense for Monte Morris it stings because he’s going to another West Contender for the thing that the Wolves could sign him for remember they can only sign minimum contracts unless it’s their own guy so they theoretically could have signed him for more but that’s there there’s penalties if you sign guys for more dollars uh than than the minimum at this point so the fact that it’s the same deal the Wolves could offer hurts it would have been great to have Monte Morris back as as a security policy an insurance blanket um mix those metaphors a security blanket and insurance policy I guess it works either way now but but it would have been absolute luxury because you have Dillingham and they have space to sign somebody else at a minimum so like you know you don’t need Monte Morris I’m sure this was the Wolves plan a was let’s at least give it a shot give Monte Morris a minimum deal and you know mlin walks and then we’ve got Dillingham and between Dillingham and Morris and alander Walker there’s a backup point guard solution instead he goes to Phoenix he’ll be on a western conference RI rival of course the team the wol swept in the first round this year and he’ll get some serious built an opportunity to play with the Phoenix Suns because remember the whole thing with them ler is they didn’t really have a true point guard for long stretches after you know not having Chris Paul Chris Paul leaving prior to last season uh so that’s uh that’s a tough one not completely unexpected what does it mean for the rest of the roster we’ll get to that here in a second because I think the context of what happened shortly thereafter uh is is also important when we talk about what else the wolves are going to try and do here Kyle Anderson slowmo who the Wolves were vocal about wanting to bring back and Kyle was vocal about wanting to come back to the Timberwolves he will be signing technically signing with the wolves in a signing trade but ultimately going to the Golden State Warriors for three years and $27 million which is essentially what he’s making now he was making around n million uh I think his contract was two years in 18 or 185 with Minnesota so he was making roughly that the last couple of years it’s a three-year deal the third Year’s non- guaranteed so potentially two years in a player option and the only thing the wolves are getting is a future second round pick Swap and then cash uh to surely Offset you know whatever tax bill cash needs to be offset so it the sent trade thing only really future SE on pick swap fine like we’ll take it um but this makes a lot of sense for Golden State like slow-mo makes sense there it stings for Minnesota but again not unexpected and from the beginning of this offseason and we talked about this at Minnesota basketball party a few weeks ago that like hey the wolves are going to try whatever they can to bring Kyle Anderson back and I’m sure that if they had the mid level exception available to them which could have been five to six million I’m sure the Wolves could have made a more legitimate push but as soon as they hit that second apron which was pretty inevitable but happened very quickly this offseason that that was going to be a thing they no longer have the mid-level acception available so that conversation went out the window and they technically could sign him to whatever they wanted because they’re in the second apron and he’s their own free agent but and there was a report that came out I think early Tuesday or late Monday that the wolves and Anderson were far apart I’m sure that they were saying hey we’ll pay you four or five million like you can come back you’ll have the same role and I’m sure he was like no I know I could get more on the open market which is exactly what I’ve been saying from the beginning that the Wolves were going to try and retain him but it was going to have to be at a discount and that was too big of a discount I know Kyle Anderson talked about his son uh who’s on the Spectrum enjoying being in the m innesa schools and they they liked being in Minnesota and he wanted to stay I’m sure that didn’t help in terms of negotiation tactics unfortunately that’s just the way it is uh and so the Wolves probably were like hey look you want to be here we’ll pay you a little bit less we’ll be a contender well you went to Golden State and the Wolves should be better than Golden State next year but obviously the Warriors are still reshaping their roster after this happened they’re you know came out they trying to get buddy healed in a side and trade so there’s a lot of movie pieces still but Kyle Anderson is one of the pieces now repl replacing Klay Thompson and he’s actually going to be sloted into the the uh the traded player exception that that was uh created when Klay Thompson was moved to Dallas so as we said from the beginning on this show it was always unlikely KY Anderson came back and even though he had offensive struggles and he was one of two non-shooters in the Wolves rotation along with Rudy goar he brought a lot of value as a Swiss army knife on both ends of the floor but especially defensively and then also as kind of the guy off the bench that would actually run the offense and Nik Alexander Walker can do that but sitting here right now the only guy that’s really truly a bench playmaker for others is a 19-year old rookie in Rob Dillingham and who who by the way some Scouts had concerns about playmaking ability I I didn’t agree with it neither did Tyler meta of doans I had on the show last Friday to talk about dealing him as a prospect we both think he’ll be just fine as a creator for others in the NBA but there is there he certain going to be raw in that area as a rookie so the wolves do still need a vet point guard we’ll talk about that next we’ll talk about kind of resetting the roster where the wolves are at and then we’ll get into the lry market and talk do all that here next today’s episode of now the Timberwolves this offseason have acquired a couple of first round picks who will get their um get their guaranteed contracts in Terence Shannon Jr and Rob Dillingham they’ve resigned Luca Garza and that’s all they’ve done so far they know that they had a spots opened up with the TJ Warren free agency initially with Kyle Anderson um and uh I’m blanking completely Monte Morris uh and then the two-way spots also with daan Nicks and also Jordan mcclin but dasan Nicks and the spot that was vacated by Garza when he was elevated to a standard roster spot those spots are all available now except for they did sign they did sign the two or they have the two rookies now so roster size is is 16 but the minimum is 14 and that’s what the Wolves did last year they started here with 14 and then there’s rules about having to add somebody along the way because you can’t have an empty roster spot for so long consecutively and you can’t finish the year with an empty roster or with a non- full roster I should say so they need to sign at least two more guys plus they have two two-way spots um we know that of the guys that were on the team last year on a standard contract Jordan mofin and TJ Warren are the only players that are left I don’t think TJ Warren’s going to be back unless get down to it and everybody else is gone and they needs to fill spot like maybe there’s a shot right maybe he comes a training camp or something like that I I think it’s unlikely though because I think at this stage given everything that’s out there and the players we talked about on Tuesday show they could do better than TJ Warren mlin I still think there’s a shot there hasn’t been any chatter related to him I know some on the Wolves beat have said he probably wants a change of scenery um I could see that because he’s been in the same kind of like you’re a backup point guard but you’re actually a third point guard and but we trust you more than we trust DLo but now you have a calf injury and like he’s gone through it’s it’s the most volatile but yet like narrow if this makes any sense like swing for Jordan mcclin for being like he’s one of the best backup point guards in the league to he’s hurt and now he’s back and he looks unplayable and we’re not going to play him to you know before that it was playing ahead of DLo in the playoffs three years ago like it’s it’s just like this weird back and forth and I I get it from a glofin standpoint if he doesn’t want to get jerked around like that he could probably go find a team and I haven’t gone through every depth chart in the league to see who’s got a vacant backup point guard spot available but I think he’s good enough to be a backup point guard on an NBA team on a playoff team is he the full-time backup point guard playing 16 minutes a game I don’t know I think it’s I think maybe um but in Minnesota it would be the same role again it would be hey if we don’t trust Dillingham in a particular situation if he gets into foul trouble if Chris Fitz just gets frustrated with Dillingham like we’re going to turn to Jordan mofin and you may be our main backup early in the year you may be for stretches um your next man up type of a thing but that was supposed to be the case last year especially after they traded well I guess when they traded shakee Milton they got back uh Monte Morris but there was never really consistent minutes for mofin last year either so I get it if he wants to move on if he can get more than the minimum and get more minutes he should do it but if it’s minimum contracts it makes sense for him to come back to Minnesota and I think it could still happen obviously Chris fch really likes him and uh I still think he’s a good player and certainly when he gets on a heater from three and like you look at the track record he is college Pros he’s a good three-point shooter he didn’t start out great as an NBA player but he can shoot the three and he can create and he can be Scrappy defensively it’s just the limited upside and and the sides that that are tough and I’m sure the Wolves would prefer to have a bigger you know guard out there as the backup point but they’re not going to bring back Dean Knicks I mean they didn’t play at least not as a on a actual contract I remember as a he was a two-way guy last year they didn’t act he played rotation minutes once and it was like when everybody was hurt and sick or whatever in that game in Utah they didn’t trust him to play ever so and I know they like that he’s a bigger guard and all that but like it doesn’t make sense to bring him back either so between mofin Nicks and Warren I think mofin is the only one that’s got a true shot at being back um unless they just decide hey we’ve got an extra 2A to play with we’ll put we’ll give this to Dean Nicks because you know whatever we like that he uh we like that he started the pointing thing for when guys got dunked on so I I don’t know um but otherwise they’ve got two spots to fill one could be mlin and they could theoretically go above the minimum for him but although I’d be surprised but they have to fill two spots and we talked about a few guys or I talked about a few guys on Tuesday um real quickly especially now that we know that KY Anderson’s gone I think that bigger kind of Swing forward with positional flexibility especially defensively with potentially some creation ability makes some sense like Jo Jay Crowder makes sense there U torian Prince I like that option a little bit less but he’d be an option in a similar role Reggie Bullock is less of a Creator more of a catch- and shoot 3 and D guy he’d be really good in that role if you want somebody that’s higher usage you could go after Gordon Hayward although I think you could get more than the minimum same with cheddy Osman he’s for sure gonna get more than the minimum he’s another name that I had to mention though uh Thad young long in the tooth still decent defensively still versatile offensively in terms of being able to pass uh he’s not your ninth guy or your eighth guy so I I wouldn’t sign him with the expectation he is going to be that but if they need to fill their last roster spot and they want somebody that’s TJ Warren es but maybe a little bit more of the Kyle Anderson version with the ball in their hands less of a shooter more of a distributor Thad young fits that bill so those are all names to keep an eye on Jordan a I guess would be uh similar you know different skill set but same position and then they still do need a guard if it’s not mlin uh you know I like Justin holiday I like Alec Burks who probably gets more than the minimum Damen Lee is probably going back to Phoenix although maybe the Monte Morris thing could impact that a little bit um those are kind of the names I talked about the other day but again I went through the list of backup point guards I don’t know who you’re going to find on that list that’s better than Jordan mlin that’s going to sign for the minimum um so I would stick with mlin stick with what you know stick with a player that you know can be a one of the better backup Point cards in the league when he’s right um that would be my take on that okay so transition into the Lori marketing conversation I’m going to set it up and then we’ll come back to it here in just a moment the the rumor it’s a legit rumor that came out of so it was reported I think on Monday that the Jazz were considering trading lry Markin and they certainly don’t have to uh his deal is expiring after this year so they you know there could be some Valu TCH for Utah to trade him now but they also could wait to trade him at the deadline um but there also there’s also strikey will the iron hot and the Mel Bridges trade and all the picks that were acquired in that trade it’s a possibility too so there’s a list of some teams that are interested in lri Markin in um Golden State obviously I don’t think that the KY Anderson thing impacts that I guess I’m not 100% sure what their cap space looks like because this article was written like I guess was written Monday night um so I would assume they’re still players since he fit into the trade exception Sacramento’s mentioned San Antonio’s mentioned and then later in the article Jake this is Jake Fischer at Yahoo so he’s plugged in and and what he hears are things that he hears he says Minnesota has shown interest in marke in as well sources said Philadelphia has never placed real attention on him so the only teams mentioned are Golden State Sacramento San Antonio Minnesota and that he says the Sixers aren’t super interested so for what take that forever whatever it’s worth the wolves are apparently interested in marketing I’ll explain how this could work and I actually did find a fake trade somebody wrote about I’m going to give them some props and and uh talk about what I like and don’t like about it and why the Wolves would even entertain this why it’s Tech ially feasible uh although not likely we’ll do all that here next all right so could the Tim rules trade for Lori marke in given their current cap situation the obvious that the at first glance the answer is no this won’t work Lori makes uh this next year he’ll make $18 million so they can’t and you can’t um you don’t get the same leeway in terms of matching salaries in when you’re over the second apron so they it needs to be basically a perfect salary match is is how I understand it um and so all that to say it’s an $18 million contract so the only way the Wolves could do this is if they is if they match the salary and include a third team because otherwise they’re not going to be able to come up with the assets to do it and Carlon town makes too much money to do this straight up so I’m going to kind of short circuit the this a little bit by referencing a a fake trade that I found that somebody over at Sports Illustrated and I’ll give them and and it’s si.com but it’s the fanation part of it so it’s more of a a fan trade proposal Jackson codell is the writer cadell is the writer I did check this against the trade machine so it does work in the trade machine so even though it is a fake trade it does work uh the fake trade suggested here and then I’ll explain why why the Wolves would do this I don’t necessarily agree with his reasoning but I’ll give I’ll give the the reason if the Wolves were to do this why it happen in this trade Atlanta would receive carony towns and Walker Kesler the Wolves would receive lorri marinin and DeAndre Hunter Utah gets Clint capella Garrison Matthews and a whole host of picks mostly from Atlanta except for there is a 28 pick swap for Minnesota and a 25 second round pick for Minnesota which was originally Utah’s in the first place why would Minnesota do this well first of all it would have to be a three- team deal if not a four team deal because the Wolves otherwise don’t have the picks to trade and the salaries wouldn’t work so they would need a third team at least the only reason the Wolves would do this is to get out of the second apron for next year because you’d be replacing Carl th Town’s 40 plus million this year with Lori Markin and’s 18 million this year and then he becomes an expiring so you’d have the option do we trade do we resign Markin in which is probably unlikely because you’re going to be right back in the same spot except if wants the max which would be pretty aggressive but if he does and I’m sure he’ll ask for It ultimately over the life of that contract is going to be more than what Carl towns has signed for so you could do this trade and if you could tell yourself it doesn’t make us worse this year if anything else is Treading Water I shouldn’t say that because they there’d still be a finals Contender but it would be it would be in the same within the same variance of what this team should be this year right like if we buy they’re a 50 to 60 win team or something like that they should be in that same window marinin is a reasonable fact simly of carony towns offensively obviously not as skilled offensively but certainly can stretch the floor can do a lot of those same things he’s a big body defensively he’s not as good defensively as Carl th towns no matter what anyone might tell you he’s just not so it it might make you marginally worse this year but if you also get another rotation guy like in this case DeAndre Hunter who’s fine on both ends of the floor uh I think he’s a bit overrated defensively but again big body has the size could be your ninth guy just fine I mean he’s been a starter for most of his career in Atlanta for whatever that’s worth um you could argue this trade doesn’t make the Wolves worse it eases the tax bill this year it gives you the expiring for next year I would have to run all the numbers to see what that means for next year’s cap if like that’s true savings or if they are still over the tax anyway and then it’s like all right what’s the point of this why not just go all in one more year and see what happens so that’s kind of where I land on it is I I don’t think that it’s worth it to make the team marginally worse to now it’s also not my money but I think it’d be a pretty clear argument for Tim Connelly to whoever he’s reporting to currently in ownership probably Glen Taylor but maybe everybody on some level um is look this doesn’t make us better it saves US 20 million bucks plus whatever penalties we’re saving this year um but it makes this marginally worse and as long as we’re paying the tax anyway we might as well go all the way in which has kind of been the argument all along so I don’t think it makes a ton of sense for that reason now that has to be the only reason the wolves are interested marketing is going to be 27 so he’s theoretically going into his prime he actually just turned 27 late May so he’s going into his prime he’s a career almost 38% three-point shooter last year is 40% he’s been 39% or greater through the last four years so he’s nearly as good a three-point shooter as Carl thony towns he was an All-Star most improved player two years ago last year had 20 put up 23 and eight again shot 40% for three so if you if you compare cat and Markin in head-to-head cat’s the better shooter uh even though Markin in’s very good and I want to be clear about that he is a very good three-point shooter but Carl thony towns is a great three-point shooter uh cat’s actually still a better rebounder even with his recent rebounding I don’t want to say Swoon but downturn with the positional change and and some of the things he’s been asked to do defensively he’s not rebounding as much but he’s still a better rebounder than marinin he’s a better shooter than marinin he faces up to the basket and has more offensive tools that he uses better than marinin marinin then would become a little bit of a lower use offensive piece which that maybe it it makes you feel better about the fit with Anthony Edwards because cat feels underutilized if he’s not as involved in the offense if ant’s dominating so you could make the argument that hey ant’s GNA use up so many possessions that and then now Dillingham as well that we bring in a slightly lower usage guy who can still pack a punch who can still knock down an open three with the best of them and uh you know is decent on the boards you can make that argument we’re natural for if you will I do not think that he would provide as much value defensively um and that would be one of my primary concerns and a team whose rebounding status the Wolves is already a little bit tenuous to bring in Lorie Markin in and replace Carlton towns doesn’t make a ton of sense to me either so if it happens I could build the case as to why they did it clearly it would be savings against the cap it would be replacing cats three-point shooting with somebody that’s as close as you’re going to get finding a more natural four freeing up possessions more possessions for Anthony Edwards and eventually Rob dillian ham and eventually maybe Jaden McDaniels who knows uh that’s the only reason you you would do something like this is if ownership kind of dictates look this makes sense from a from a from a a cost a finance perspective and then the Wolves if Tim connell’s painted into a corner you could certainly do worse like something like this is a million times better than every other potential cat trade I’ve seen out there uh because I could at least with a straight face tell you why they’re doing this I don’t think it happens I think it’s less than 5% that cats traded this offseason um that would be the only this is the only thing I’ve seen out there cat fake cat trade if you will in quotes with uh with cat attached to it that I would be okay I wouldn’t be okay with it I’d be upset about it and I would say that on the show I would talk about how I didn’t like it I’m I’m gonna be honest about that but but there are worse options and I don’t think Tim Connell is gonna give cat away I don’t think he’s GNA be traded this offseason I need to reiterate that but part of this is like hey this is a legit rumor from a legit reporter we have to talk about it and it’s the best one seen so far so if if ownership dictates you must trade carony towns you could do worse than Lori Markin in and a piece like a DeAndre Hunter a big in theory good Defender to add to your rotation um it’s it’s uh it’s at least plausible uh if if the wolves are forced to do it all right that’s all we have for you today if anything else happens in free agency we’re to the point now where there are vet minimum guys that are starting to sign as we saw Monte Morris do so perhaps there will be a bit of wolves news here in the next few days days we’ll pretty we’re pretty close to hearing about the summer league roster too so that’s upcoming here on the show soon uh so we’ll do that here the rest of the week we are still daily throughout the month of July 1. It doesn't sting at all. Kyle Anderson has clearly declined and Monty Morris never really provided the spark we needed. This clears up money and more importantly room for younger guys to come on in. Our younger guys are legit and we only need one or two to come through and eventually be a good player, but we have about six solid options, so yea, clear the way for the new guys and eliminate an unbelievably bad offensive player. Gives Garza, Minot and ? the minutes they need. I've agreed with everything that Conley has done this offseason and I don't think he's done.

  2. It's a wash with Kyle. Yeah, he did some things very well, but his inability to shoot kinda negated those things. He was a positive player, but just barely.

  3. Lauri commits half as many fouls and half as many turnovers. He also shoots a way higher volume of 3s, so I’d argue he’s a better shooter. Also you can trade KAT with nothing coming back as salary filler because Utah has a ton of cap space. It gets Minnesota completely out of tax. Saves money going forward too cause KAT is on super max and Lauri is just eligible for max

  4. On a scale of 1-10, this is like 2 or 3. Slomo was 1 of the leader in the locker room but his contributions on the floor inconsistent. If we want to win it all, got to take some risks and let go of a few pieces and see what you can do better.

  5. Joe Engles is the perfect fit. Like a combo of Pat Bavs trolling crossed with Kyle Andersons smartness and passing but can shoot. A little less defense but hey…it's an upgrade from Kyle for about 13 million less. Perfect.
