[Winderman] Per multiple NBA sources: Caleb Martin had turned down a five-year, $65 million extension ahead of free agency, one that would have required him to opt into the final year on his Heat contract by last Saturday’s deadline. That offer no longer was possible once he opted out.

  1. They were basically giving him the full MLE for 5 years and he turned it down?

    Lmao oof

No matter what he makes, I’m just glad to see him do well. Watching his and Cody’s growth from his freshman year at Davie to now is amazing.

  3. thegoddessunicorn

Did he consult with Schroeder before doing this?

  4. Vurtune011

i love that guy but if he took it we are fucked even more

When betting on yourself goes wrong. Throw him in the Schroeder bin with the rest of the guys that turned down big contracts to bet on themselves

Half the money for one less year than Miami offered. Wow.

I guess it’s only half a bag fumble because $32m is still pretty nice but yeah. Wow. Either he or his agent absolutely fucked it up.

  7. Damn bird in the hand my man. I think he’ll regret that one

  8. Far_Seaweed352

Why does this sound so unreliable?? Is it the pr damage control or what?

  9. He saw Wagners contract and probably thinks he will get the bag.

Were all 6 of those years guaranteed? How can anyone but the top players turn that down?!?

  11. dude hasn’t got a bag yet, crazy turning that down

  12. Would’ve made me looney if pat had given him that and he accepted. Actually would’ve wanted that man fired

  13. I’m confused how they were allowed to offer him this much? His salary this year would’ve been 7.12 million. I thought the max he could get on an extension would be 4 years, a starting salary of 140% of his last salary, which would be like 9.9 million, and then 8% raises every year which would put him at like 51 million? Can someone who’s better at the CBA than me explain this?

Would this mean he would have been at a lower amount this year and then greater for the next 4?

Ouch…lost 33m in a week. And more due to state tax.

  16. I was surprised at the amount he signed for, I am even more surprised now.

Chip on his shoulder type year / player…

Or disgruntled and will let this affect his focus, prep, and game?

Also, the 6ers seem to have very little depth while their two top stars (who, when healthy, are a tremendous tandem and add Maxey and that’s a ton of talent) are very very injury prone and on the wrong side of 30. The East has some really tough defenses so between a long season and the physicality of the playoffs you really have to wonder about the roster construction strategy.

Plus, like many teams in this new cap era, aren’t they basically locked in for the next few years with this group and not much room to add depth? Regular expected injuries at the wrong time could easily derail a season, but if something worse happens with their two aging elite guys that could crush this team for a while
