Why Luka Doncic’s Rest & Recovery is the #1 Priority for the Mavs After Slovenia’s Olympic Bid Fails

one more thing Luca Don and slovenia’s attempt to make the Olympics fails but Luca donish now gets some much needed rest how much does he need it I’ll tell you on today’s lock on Ms one more thing I’m here because uh I have to be is going to get a seat at the table that’s it it’s the machine don’t let his wh take away from his you can rest later you’re young I be wait wait one more [Music] thing yeah welcome you’re still locked on in the Dallas Mavericks my name is Nick angstead me member and your best friend covering the maps for the lock on podcast Network your team every day thanks for listening to the show subscribe about like 12,000 YouTube subscribers away from 50k that’s my goal I think for the next calendar year hit 50k YouTube subscribers help me out with that if you haven’t subscribed today we’ll talk about lucanic he needs some rest he he’s finally going to get it and we’ll talk about why and all that we’ll get into Slovenia versus Greece and all that but man I think I’ll just start here Luca donic is year in basketball ends and I know that there’s a lot of people that were saying oh why is luuka even playing in these International competitions it’s all over we don’t have to talk about that we I parsed that out the last episode where I talked about why Luca plays an international play why it’s important to him and why he does this but Luca has just had an insane year of basketball he played in Eight feeble World Cup games back in August September of 2023 then he came to Mavs training Camp so the fever World Cup games were August 26th to September 9th they played in Japan and the Philippines then he went to NBA preseason in Dallas and started training camp September 27th so only like two weeks off between there that started in Dallas then they flew to Abu Dhabi played two games there went to Real Madrid played you know went to Spain played Real Madrid October 10th they came back Luca missed the last preseason game because they didn’t need him to play against the Pistons M’s regular season started October 25th went through April 14th Luka played 70 games in between there he also went to all-star weekend so he didn’t get a break then his daughter was born his firstborn child Gabriella was born December 2023 at some time and so he became a father in that time in the regular season then they make the playoffs the playoffs start April 21st so just a you know a week after the regular season that goes all the way to June 17th because they make the finals he plays in 22 playoff games and plays 41 minutes a game in those and then he goes and plays these three qualifier games for the Olympics plus they played some exhibition matches and friendlies for the Olympics and for the feeo World Cup games Luca has played a ton of basketball over the last year that’s Luca’s last calendar year basically it’s been about 283 days since training camp and you can go back to you know the beginning of the feeble World Cup August 26th that’s even farther back insane let’s see August 26th 2023 to now 315 days Luca has been playing basketball basically non-stop there’s either been you know a couple like a week break or so or there’s been something to prepare for or prep for coming up feo World Cup NBA preseason NBA regular season NBA playoffs Olympic qualifiers he has just been going going going and Luca’s injuries throughout all this have been vast I tweeted it out I texted it out to the sub texter Lucas’s injuries he had the chest contusion right knee sprain right ankle sprain left ankle soreness left Achilles soreness left calf strain left hamstring soreness left quad injury right elbow sprain the broken nose he got against the Suns when Grayson Allen smacked him in the face with the ball and he had a back injury I think there’s probably more than that but those are the ones that I could find and that I remember from Luca this past season why he was listed on the injury report or why he missed some games and he didn’t even miss many games one of the things that I think that was disingenuous about the talk of Luca over the last year or so is that he’s just been dealing with so many injuries in pains and soreness and things like that this rest is much needed for luuka dri congratulations to him for just an incredible year of basketball should have been the MVP made it to the NBA finals had the World Cup uh didn’t qualify for the Olympics that would have just been an in an insane ask for him to do uh in this game against Greece I’ll talk about here in a second but absolutely insane to hear Luca go through all this stuff stuff all these injuries to play all these games and all that it’s just been an absolutely grinding grueling year for Luca to go through all this and he deserves much needed rest the Mavericks will probably start training camp last year it started September 27th I think it’ll be a little bit later because the Mavericks don’t have an international trip so end of September so Luca basically gets July August and September to rest now awesome good for him take the time Luca uh come back and whatever shape you whatever shape you decide to come in and uh and get ready for for the next season I think that’s this is going to be a really important time for Luka donic to to to rest and get get everything that he needs in this off season and mental rest too I mean we talk about the physical rest all the time but the mental rest LCA probably needs after going through all this I mean it’s just such a huge thing and hopefully he comes back in next season feeling invigorated they just made the finals they just got Klay Thompson he seemed to be happy about that Mavs are in a really good place they have he has Kyrie not a lot not a ton of changes as far as like losing guys last couple years they lose Brunson they lose in the playoffs they you know they just have lost guys and lost things and lost momentum and coming into each season has not been like the most exciting thing for Luca but now after this whole year get some rest come back Kyrie clay m just made the finals all that I think it’s going to be an exciting start for Luca next season I think he’s going to be energized and ready to come back to to the the season next year because it’s not going to be a draining thing for him just projecting but it seems like the Mavs are in a really good place Luka Don is going to get some rest and hopefully get back to 100% healthy and be back to the Luca that we’re used to seeing the MVP Luca I mean we haven’t seen it almost all playoffs it felt like we didn’t see the MVP level Luca because of the injuries that he was dealing with I mean all the things that I just mentioned you know knees ankles like Calves hamstrings quads it’s every all lower body stuff that just didn’t allow him to get the kind of like push and liftt that he needed on shots and stuff even in the game that they won against New Zealand the other day he was missing a bunch of shots because they were all coming up short and I know that people are like oh when he loses he’s he’s dealing with injuries when he wins he’s he’s fine no like in his wins he’s been dealing with these injuries too his shots have been short his free throws haven’t been great he made a bunch of free throws against New Zealand but in this game two of six from the free throw line bunch of short shots he had to jack up a bunch of Threes so congrats to Luca and uh and yeah good good stuff from him this past year we we’ll send him off we’ll send Luca off [Music] with there you go congrats on the last year that you’ve had LCA donich let’s talk about this Slovenia versus the uh vers versus Greece so Slovenia comes into this they need to win in order to move on it’s a semi-final they beat beat New Zealand and so that was the reason why they’re even in the situation at all to make the o to make the Olympics and so they needed to win this game is a must-win game they come into this game Giannis is playing for Greece Giannis had missed a game against Egypt for rest he had been dealing with a calf injury from the NBA season he’d also been dealing with a knee thing that he got in another Olympic qualifier game for Greece and so not really we weren’t really sure what we were going to get from Giannis but he starts in right out the gate we hear that you know Josh neibo is expected to to guard Luca or to guard Giannis Josh Neo is the the naturalized Center that’s that was brought over he replaced Mike Toby in the lineup Josh neibo is like a 69ine springy switchable type Center that Slovenia has and you’re like all right let’s throw the one guy that basically the only guy that could potentially even try to cover Giannis and they put Josh neibo on him and the first play of the game Giannis posts him up and one or Spin and one Giannis makes the free throw and Slovenia is down three points to start the game very first possession of the game and you’re like oh no oh no this is not going to be good so you know gree starts on a 13 to zero run Slovenia doesn’t score until 6:45 into the game they play 10-minute quarters so they didn’t score for the first like three minutes or so and uh again Grace starts with a 130 run they end the first quarter with a 10 run when Luca gets checked out of the game they hit a heave from like you know 30 plus feet and felt like it felt like the uh it felt like the pton Pritchard shots from the Mavs in the finals again I it was just like nothing was going right for him Slovenia ended the first quarter down 14-32 their offense has been the thing these these qualifier games slovenia’s offense just did not have enough when Luca is not 100% it really felt like the Mavs and the finals all these qualifier games when Luca is not 100% when he does not have the burst the lift the the shots the everything when he cannot give you everything they didn’t have anything that was tough it was real tough to watch them offensively their their process just didn’t seem to be good they didn’t have enough guys that could get separation they didn’t have enough guys that could hit shots so Luca finishes the game 21 points seven rebounds five assists seven of 14 from the field because he went five of nine from three at in the second half he just had to start bombing threes because gree started to double team him and send delayed help and all kinds of stuff they basically sent two bodies to him from the like when did they when did I when did I write down that they start uh like the like in the six minute Mark the first quarter soon as Slovenia scored Luca got a drive and a score at 6:45 and immediately after that they’re like oh Luca just scored okay time for us to send a double and they sent a double basically immediately after that and they sent it the whole rest of the game so Luca if he didn’t want to have two bodies on him he had to just jack up a three a deep three and so he was throwing up step backs and he wenton five and nine he actually this was his best three-point shooting game he’s had had and it was slovenia’s best three-point shooting game I think that I’ve seen at least in these qualifier games but just wasn’t good enough wasn’t good enough for them to to uh to move on uh only scored 68 points it’s just not going to get it done Josh Neo though we talked about him a little earlier 17 points seven boards they found something here with him I mean he was the only offensive thing that they could get going because outside of Giannis uh G gree didn’t really have any other bigs costess Onan kmo was you know was out and wasn’t going to play uh they had like Papa papay yanis and and guys like that but they’re just not they’re not really centers like they’re just kind of like they’re kind of stretch fours that that Greece has and so Slovenia was able to get some stuff going with Josh neibo in the pick and roll again he scores 17 points eight of nine from the field but other than that they just really didn’t have anything going the other slovenians besides Luca and Josh Neo struggled in a big way just a just could not get anything going they were eight of 31 from the field Lao chanar is the other guy that has played in the NBA that was on Denver last year that remember was out with the ACL injury because of the international play last year he had a terrible injury he’s the only other NBA player and he’s coming back from an ACL injury it’s really hard to come back from those but he went he went what was Zero for five in this game too he just struggled they didn’t couldn’t get anything from him uh prepic Clement prepic was the other guy that I talked about yesterday it’s like all right he’s really got to get going for them to get any offensive going he’s like their Off the Bench microwave scorer guard he went two of eight from the field one only one assist in this game it just really couldn’t get anything going either couldn’t get separation couldn’t get uh couldn’t get shots to go especially with Giannis helping and speaking of Giannis he was dealing with the injury we talked about he had to rest another game he only had to play 21 minutes not even he plays 20 minutes 52 seconds brutal one brutal one offensively for this Slovenian team and uh he really couldn’t get anything going Greece had all the runs in them Greece built up a 20-point lead to start the second quarter and and I tweeted like I think this game is done like Slovenia doesn’t have enough offense to to keep up with them Slovenia won the second quarter 19 to 15 but it just wasn’t enough Greece started the fourth quarter the 16 to3 R Luca checks out with like four minutes to go or something like that and slovenia’s bid to go to the Olympics ends lucad Don’s season and his basketball year ends which I think it’s a positive thing for him uh it’s sad to see Slovenia go out like this but but Luca gets the rest I think that’s what’s important for for him and for Mavericks fans I understand that that’s what people have wanted to see but that’s where we are Slovenia and and slovenia’s bid ends Luca donic gets some rest and we’ll continue here on lockdown Mavs thanks for hanging out with me talking about Slovenia talking about Luka donic we’ll continue with more all throughout the offseason guys thanks for for listening to locked on Ms one more thing peace out boom

  1. Yes! Never thought I’d be so happy for Luka to lose. Now get your recovery beer back from Mike Finley…

  2. So many mixed feelings, yes I hate seeing our boy lose but then again idgaf about slovania so I'm happy he can recover from injuries 🤣😭

  3. Thank God he lost. Now go rest your knee and get ready for next season. Clown me for tooting against Slovenia. Idc🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️

  4. Why every time Luka lost is always due to injury. Luka is just outplayed by better teams and better players. Jason Tatum and Giannis baby.😂😂😂😂

  5. Nick laying out the whole Luka storyline during last year makes me realize even more how absolutely hectic and crazy it was. Now, what it seems for the first time in his whole career Luka is finally able to get some rest and work on himself, his family and his game in a chill manner for these next few months. Good job Nick 😀

  6. Feel for him man. I know how much this means to him and his country. He has the entire weight of that country on his shoulders. Sucks.

  7. i know slovenia has a game to play also. it for the world cup qualification. it the 1st window of the world cup qualification?

  8. NBA is private, is not 'national' at all, while Fiba, Fifa, Olympic commite, are kinda more national in concept but were all formed in Switzerland by masons. So who cares about modern Olympics really.

  9. as old folks say, he is 25 has young legs get it out your system. so when luka is 27, 28 + hopefully its less appealing

  10. Luka just fell on his back at team shower after game vs greece, he could stand up for 10 mins…

  11. This Slovenian team was bound to go nowhere. Players don't play for their teams.. Sekulič was never really "good".. 4 years ago we were good cause of euro 2017 spirits were still high. 2 years ago (at eurobasket) we were unable to reach full potential. And this year, we straight off sucked. The entire coaching staff needs to go. We played terrible against Croatia, badly against New zeland (even if we won) and today, Greece confirmed how bad it really is.
So it's really best for everyone.. loosing as early as possible.

  12. Whoa. I can't believe how many games he's played since I saw him play here in the Philippines last year. People can say whatever they want, but the truth remains: Luka is really built different.

  13. Luka plays at a slower pace but still needs to be able to accelerate for a few steps on his drives to put the defender on his hip. If you were watching the Mavericks for most games, you can see the difference in how Luka was playing. He played even slower and did not drive very much toward the end of the regular season and even less scoring out bursts as the playoffs proceeded. Luka will win several championships, but he must learn to guard his health and learn to score the 35 points in under 35 minutes per game. Fortunately, the Mavericks are going to a deeper team this year.

  14. Little correction, Luka's "rest and recovery" is never, and has never been a priority or he wouldn't have been playing basketball 9 days after the Finals ended.

  15. Let's be real, that Slovenia team wasn't very good besides Luka and he'd kill himself just to keep them competitive. An early exit benefits everyone.

  16. Luka is a bonafide hooper. Never have to worry about his love for the game like some of our American players. Sometimes you gotta protect a hooper from himself. All they know is hoop!

  17. Trade idea for Mavs. They send Kyrie to Lakers for their 29 and 31 first round picks and 28 or 30 pick swab (all three should be very valuable as the Lakers will suck in a few years). Send those picks plus the Mavs 2025 and 2031 picks to Utah, along with Maxi and one or two of their young guys (Grimes, Hardy, O-Max, etc) to the Jazz for Markennan. The Mavs have too many wings anyway that they won't be able to play.

Lauri is 7 foot tall, shoots 40% from 3 on 8 shots per game and high efficieny on 2 pointers as he is able to get inside (8 shots per game there too). His timeline matches with Luka's. He is 7 ft tall comapred to Kyrie 6'1 and 32 years old. Explosive guards like Kyrie don't do well getting into their mid-30s.

Lakers send Russell to Mavs as their backup guard, and see if you can pry Reeves out of them too. Salaries will work out, Mavs get a decent backup guard for 1 year till they figure out another for the following year. Or send Russell to Utah for Sexton.
