Dennis Smith Jr. vs Spencer Dinwiddie: Who Fits the Dallas Mavericks’ Final Roster Need?

on today’s show the Dallas Mavericks have a choice to make maybe it’s theirs Dennis Smith Jr or Spencer dwy for the final roster spot do they even need either of those guys talk about that in more today like a MTH I’m luk and this is lock on Mavericks Mavericks Champion it’s good and the Mavericks have won the game if you don’t believe you shouldn’t be here loyalty never Fades away and welcome you’re locked on at the Dallas Mavericks my name is Nick angstead media member and your best friend covering the maps at the locked on podcast Network your team every day thanks for being part of the moment more as playoffs wind down the Sports Stop sporting like we want them to but this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a bonus or a boost daily just like this podcast that’s right something for everybody all day all summer long visit fanduel.com to get started and joining me from 1053 The Fan the consumate professional what you got for me Rula how are we already at Summer League how did that happen summer league practice July 8th on Monday if you’re listening to this it is today how how did this happen we just we just skipped the summer yeah we we we blinked uh I flew to 100 different states and now we’re here so the playoffs I guess were in there I guess so I guess I guess an NBA Finals run will do that it’s nice it’s nice it is nice uh yeah so we’ll talk about the final roster spot today we’ll get into the back and forth of that uh I also kind of wonder if we’re talking too much about the final roster spot because how are some of these guys going to play so I want to have the preliminary like who actually can play on this roster we’ll talk about that a little bit even though the roster is not set and then I want to get Reggie’s thoughts on Klay Thompson on some of the free agent guys that are officially signed and all that kind of stuff so we’ll get into all that today but let’s start here Michael Scot of hoop type reported that the Dallas Mavericks have considered bringing in one of two former guards back to the team oh retreads bringing back some retreads Mavs fans all they love is their retreads there’s there’s somebody commenting that all the time why do we always bring back guys that it’s because they know the team know the system and they have a skill set that could work anyway reported that Dallas Mavericks have considered bringing in one of two former guards back to the team Spencer jwy and Dennis Smith Jr talked about both of those guys in the fifth the last roster spot episode I did a couple days ago and I put out a poll and 8,000 of you voted in it and Dennis smth Jr came out on top 48% spencor genuity was 35% after that I think Marcus Morris was 18% after that and so the majority of MAV at least that you know engaged with this show want Dennis Smith Jr back on the team if you had to pick one of those two Reggie who are you going with um I think I go with Dennis Smith Jr I think I’m I’m gonna be a man of the people here and go with the people um my reasoning being uh that’s right that’s that’s all you always go with the people um except when you don’t but you know I think with Dennis not the Electoral College over here right you know well okay I don’t want to delve into those Waters just gonna completely completely sidestep that but no with with Dennis Smith Jr the reason why I go there is actually versus the machines I had I had to throw that one I appreciate it I done interrupting you now no it’s cool uh we could we could take our time with this I can I will work my way through the interruptions and the disruptions but no with Dennis Smith Jr I think it’s uh and uh Spencer Den we I think it’s actually for me less about what those guys individually bring per se and more about what it means with the rest of the roster and I feel like with this spot and any spot like it you’re kind of just giving yourself an opportunity to give yourself a little bit of variety from what you already have and in theory in my mind you have offensively inclined guards on your roster you have guys like and especially when you talk about uh Jaden Hardy who I think you’re looking at possibly getting that upside on with obviously we could talk about your Top Line guards that are you know clearly everybody knows about they’re they’re the foundation of this team um and I think that like Jaden hard is one of those guys that you believe offensively is coming to bring some of that to you um the thing that I’m I do wonder about is um if you want for Jason kid another option do you have somebody that you feel strength feel strong about defensively in that guard rotation and I feel like you might answer Dante exom and that that’s felt like it’s gone up and down I think Dennis Smith Jr has proven himself to be really good defensively and that seems to be something that Jason kid cares about a good amount and there’s a possibility that might be something when it comes to the guard room that you’re lacking and so I would probably go there but here’s the thing I don’t feel I feel like I’m not super U like confident about that because I could absolutely see the case for Spencer deny on this roster as well there’s a case for both I mean the the one for Spencer deny is is that he can handle the ball and the Mavs currently have Luca Kyrie you can kind of you can kind of trust Dante exam but not really in a playoff setting to to handle the ball every once in a while for you uh Hardy same kind of thing you could you could trust him in a regular season setting a little bit but not even at Summer League they could ask him to handle the ball and do some of the stuff that they needed uh Klay Thompson maybe will handle the ball a little bit Naj Marshall actually has some ball handling ability he to theable you’re not to initiator he can be a secondary initiator guy maybe same with you know Quinton Grimes and then like if Luca Kyrie are out it’s it’s Luca or Kyrie and then a couple of those guys that you’re like oh maybe they can handle the ball here or there you need you need one more guy to step up you wish Hardy could be that guy he just hasn’t really shown that he can be a primary initiator of offense handling the ball setting it everything up setting the table all Dennis do little buty is at that and has made you know name for himself in the NBA byting to the rim and uh taking advantage of of the spacing that the Mavericks team can can give him uh he struggles with the lob throws which is something that I have been thinking about a little bit when you’re thinking about these two guys and thinking about all right how does this team look now that’s different than the team that Spencer dwy left those years ago they’ve got two lob threats that are going to be on the table at all times so he’s not going to have the same kind of spacing that he did but have a lobre can he hit those guys and that that’s something that I’m concerned about one thing that sorry I also want to mention uh my my apolog Quin Grimes because I completely forgot about you and he obviously is one of those defensive guys or one of those guys could add you some defense in that guard room so my bad absolutely no you’re good the uh the one more thing that I wanted to mention about this this back and forth is I I’ve heard a lot on YouTube comments and tweets that I get and Facebook comments on the Facebook groups and the subred and all that Dennis or Spencer dwy spurned us remember when he was a buyout buyout guy and he went to the Lakers and said he’d rather go back to Dad than go back to mom like remember that whole thing with that weird quote that he had Spencer jwy did not pick us and all this Spencer did what he got traded for Kyrie Irving first of all so he did not even necessarily leave and yes he chose the Lakers instead of the Mavericks but let’s also not forget what Dennis Smith Jr did when he left I know that a lot of you are new Mavericks fans that we’ we collected that we’ve collected over the years but let’s not forget that the end of the Dennis Smith Jr Saga because I was there doing a daily podcast every day about this team we had a Dennis Smith Jr trade watch because he was he was asking for a trade back in 2019 on the on the podcast you can go back we probably say a bunch of things on there 2019 January 14th was the first day we did we did lockdown Mavs Dennis Smith Jr trade watch day one and it went all the way until January 29th which was day 15 he got traded on January 31st uh and that was the porzingis trade where Dennis got sent to the Knicks for that trade so he remember he also he sat out with an illness and a back injury that he diagnosed himself just leave it at that and I don’t don’t forget what Dennis did to this team too yes we you know appreciated his time here it wasn’t going to work with him and Luca obviously the Mavs made the right choice and then went with por got porzingis out of the deal it seemed like a really good deal at the time and then blah blah blah we all know what happened from there it’s kind of funny that Dennis Jr got traded for porzingis then porzingis got traded for deny and now we’re talking about bringing one of those one of those two cards back but if you’re all four Spencer dwy or you’re all four Dennis Smith Jr because you’re like oh D would he spurn the franchise and think about Dennis kind of did the same thing too even though he he saw the reading on the wall but he was the one that asked for a trade and sat out at practice and games and all that kind of stuff but times were different he was a much younger guy he was still in that element where he there was some anticipation of possibly being a star in the league and obviously that is a bygone time for him now I feel like some of that is like hey this are we kind of talking about a different dude but your point is well made right like neither of them leaving this team or you know I guess not having that association with this team are like Sterling in their reputation I think ultimately they’re not Seth Curry right right right we we we can we can let that go but ultimately I think whichever one you bring like they bring something to the table and so you just have to weigh it on that yeah I think you were fair in saying that hey we probably shouldn’t we probably shouldn’t use the emotions of this to make the decision I don’t know where these guys are going to go I don’t know what money they want because the Mavs only really have like a minimum like roster slot for for salary available so I don’t know if there’s teams with money out there if they’re waiting on that if I don’t know what what they’re waiting on or a bigger role somewhere else because the role would not be very big there would be there would be nights when these guys don’t play because coming up if Jason kid keeps a 10-man rotation two of these players will not play Quinton Grimes Maxi kba Dante XOM Jaden Hardy omx Prosper or one of these two guys that we’re talking about who are they who who are the ones that aren’t going to play talk about that coming up you don’t believe you shouldn’t be here today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel FanDuel Sportsbook has all kinds of props and odds that you can use to get in on the action and uh you know the NBA is not doing games right now but they are doing summer league so you can watch that but the WNBA tons of games right now our Dallas Wings got a win the other day I was there I enjoyed it it was great they now have an angel Reese tab on the on FanDuel which I appreciate Angel re recorded double double in consecutive games since June 4th so she’s continuing her double double streak four plus 14 games is minus 250 plus uh 15 or more games is plus 100 16 or more games is plus 210 17 or more games is plus 390 that’s kind of fun if you want to put some stuff on that you can do all kinds of player Awards and things like that check it out on FanDuel listen to all the different types of shows sample them see what you like see this show is on there got locked on Cowboys they’re coming up big stuff right training camp coming up about to get right back into cowboys country about about to get right back into the Cowboys country calendar yes yes got about to find out if uh Tyler giden or Cooper BB can uh really anchor an offensive line for you yeah baby oh I’m ready to hear about that I’m I’m sure I’m sure Marcus and Landon are breaking that down the nitty-gritty of that on there lo Dallas s all right Reggie let’s talk about uh one more thing with the two guy the two guys you’re were talking about do the Mavs need more on ball creation or defense or on ball defense because that that’s kind of the conversation that it comes down to if you can get both those guys to say yes to one of these deals do you need more on ball creation then you get dwy do you need more on ball defense you get Dennis Smith Jr and it’s kind of interesting like what you think that that they need more of because you you mentioned earlier when you like you mentioned Grimes and you mentioned some of these guys the on ball defense is probably combination of Klay Thompson na Marshall Quinton Grimes exam PJ Washington will do it sometimes and then obviously Luca and Kyrie switch on the guys liveing Gafford switch on the guys but it’s those those guards I mentioned and then your on ball creation is Luca Kyrie obviously and then your next guys are the ones that I mentioned like Klay can kind of Naji can kind of exom can a little bit here like you know and then Hardy can you know secondary actions but I think you’re you’re you’re without that other primary initiator and I I think it would be it for me still yeah and I I hear what you’re saying there the thing that I keep running up against because I think that your logic is very sound in that way we’re talking about fifth 15th man on the roster or even if you want to kind of move it around depending on some of the guys you already have signed like maybe he’s not 15th man maybe he’s 12th man right it’s kind of amazing that we’re getting to the point where we’re talking about 12th man is like how impactful that player will actually be when it comes down to the sample of 16 games as opposed to like regular season necessarily and of course this is all going to matter in the regular season as well but um I remember times where they was giving these giving this spot to like Vibes guy right where it was just like yo who who who do we like on the I still have the drop I still have the drop you ready right right and so like now it is kind of uh incredible I guess is the word that I will use here that now you are taking this all the way down the roster building is going all the way down to your very final spot of making sure that there’s depth and that they still add to what you’re doing um so yeah no like I think you I think you’re probably fair in saying that hey the possibility of Spencer Den witty knowing that he can do that on a rotation level I guess I’ve just me personally I continue to worry about like what the degradation of Klay Thompson looks like when it comes to like do you have somebody that you can roll out there and say if you have a highlevel guard that you’re playing against do you have somebody that you can throw out there and slow them down and I’m not sure that you have an answer so in my mind I’m like give yourself more and more options because offense never going to be uh you’re never going to be wanting for offense is it going to be a little bit more workload on or Luka cuz we we we just went through this like in the finals and I know the dwy Dennis Smith Jr doesn’t come down to all right get one of these guys you fix your finals problem but we just saw this with this team like they struggled to score points fair enough when when it really mattered at times and but I I think that that’s where some of the addition of shooting then changes the math on this because that was one of the things that made that really difficult for Kyrie and luuka was that there was able to be a load up on those guys because your shooting wasn’t there if your shooting is there does that make that a little bit easier for those guys and then you know that those guys are going to be playing 40 minutes anyways right and so I don’t know like I’m now going cyclical on this and I try not to be there but no I I hear your point for sure if kid keeps a 10-man rotation yes I think it starts with Luca Kyrie PJ clay drick Livy Daniel Gafford Naji Marshall I think is definitely yes in there that’s seven so you get three more of these guys and I’m I’m cutting out Dwight Powell and AJ Lawson so for those what that heard earlier cutting them out my goodness you get three more guys Quinton Grimes Maxi kba Dante XOM Jaden Hardy omx Prosper which two are out if you keep a 10-man rotation it’s very hard to keep an 11-man rotation at the end of the year last year kid kept you know a 10-man rotation toward towards the end of the season you’re talking about all right push comes to shove who are the 10 guys that are playing in a game I think to me I think Quinton Grimes definitely plays and I think the Mavs will need size after Lively and Gafford so I do think I do think Maxi still plays and has a role playing next to one of those guys because they need to play against some bigger teams so I think those two guys are in so then you come down to XM Hardy and omx yep yep yep and I’m I’m like look in just a normal situation I probably would go with dant xum I think that they were pleasantly surprised with what Jaden Hardy was able to give you and I think you’re looking for that particular offensive spark and you saw a little bit of the passing click there and you wonder okay we tried last summer league to get him to be a Creator maybe he’s not a full Creator but can you take the spark that you saw in the postseason and grow that into more of the role that you’re looking for right he profiles as a guy that in theory is somebody that should be able to do those things so can you take those things and grow them so I feel like he is the answer especially because like if we just take this from an asset management situation Dante XM is largely what Dante XM is right I don’t know how much upside Jane Hardy provides a decent amount of upset upside at least in theory and so I think that you you air on the side of that necessarily to see what you have there and see if you can grow that into something that’s viable for the things that you we’ve talked about you clearly needing that is the thing for me is do the Mavericks look at this rotation problem quote unquote and yes guys will play because Luca Kyrie will miss Games clay will miss games like it it will happen that somebody will miss games and the guys will play but if you want just to stick to a 10-man rotation and kids got to know what his 10- man rotation is because in the playoffs all throughout it we were like oh my God does he all of a sudden he just changed up the rotation completely game three of the NBA Finals you know it did not look like a team that was close to competing with the Boston Celtics and now maybe the Celtics and the finals was just an outlier but the Mavericks have this kind of problem with these two guards because I do think that omx falls on the on the bottom of this we just haven’t seen it yet I hope that he jumps up into a guaranteed guy that can play it’ be great he would solve a bunch of you know defensive problems for the Mavericks length problems for the Mavericks that would be incredible if omx could but we haven’t seen it yet and so I’ll wait until after summer league training camp when we start to hear guys say oh omx is really going to have a role in this that’s what we started to hear about Derrick Lively oh my God Derrick Lively Luca loves playing with him and he was playing with Luca and all these scrimmages and like that’s what we heard about him but with omx we haven’t heard it yet so I wait I’ll wait to change my opinion about that until then cool with exm and Hardy exactly what you just said with Dante exom do they think that they saw enough in that playoff run to go oh my God this guy is not going to be ready for any playoff series we just went through four rounds and he couldn’t play in any of them basically and we tried to throw him out there and he just not did not look ready and so we as a team have to invest in our future and we think Jaden Hardy is that guy because we saw him in the Western Conference finals and a little bit in the finals go out there and show some stuff so do they decide to invest in Jaden Hardy throughout the season which is something I’ve been calling for them to do more more and more because you just got to invest in this guy if you expect him to take that step forward and be that other scorer because they just desperately needed that guy now they got clay which is is very helpful in that regard but still need one more ball handler and Hardy could maybe kind of be become that guy but I I hope that it’s Hardy I kind of think that it’s exom though if you just go with kid going with the veterans instead of you know investing in some young guys instead yeah and I think ultimately right the idea of uh playing this in uh like almost stock market and like Hey we’re gonna invest in Jaden Hardy I think that that sounds good but what we know of Jason kid is you’re gonna earn it on the court and so whoever’s playing well at that time I imagine practices those types of things will get that opportunity Dante exam seemingly like he is he is done that more often of late but again if Jaden Hardy continues to give you some of the flashes that you’ve seen and St you know kind of stitch those together a little bit more frequently I can easily see him usurping Dante xam in that rotation and I think he absolutely should right if things go marginally well on what we have seen thus far I think that he will the roster is not set yet so we’ll see I mean I could imagine a if they get a den him passing up XM and Hardy and being the you know being the the 10th Man on you know the rotation even like an eighth man like passing Quinton Grimes up because they just need one more they need one more Creator out there and it could make their offense really potent if they have a you know two creators at all times a Luca a Kyrie a dwy one of those guys on the floor at all times dwy wouldn’t play 30 minutes or so but uh but yeah I I think that you could see that with Dennis I’m not sure where he would slot in with this if they decide to go with him instead I think him him and exan Hardy pose a very interesting conundrum if you get to you know the regular season with all three of those guys still on the roster as you go all right do we go exom a little bit more size and a combo of both the defense and the creation a little bit plus the three-point shooting last year was it an aberration he shot 50% from three yeah Jaden Hardy he definitely gives us more offense the shooting gives us more a little more on ball Creation in a secondary role and then Dennis gives you Elite you know Elite on ball defending but he still can’t shoot like yeah still really struggles to shoot and that that’s kind of a problem in NBA offenses and taking this back to my Logic on this like I guess I look at this as once you get past a certain point on your roster I’m just looking for versatility and having that versatile different type of like hey I can just throw out a guy that I know can stop the bleeding defensively right it’s not necessarily like a hey this is I’m going to push this button every time but it gives me a different button to push where I feel like in some ways you have different versions of Spencer deny although again you’re very right that you don’t have the same type of playmaking that he gives you anywhere else when it comes to your bench but I just love the idea of having a dude at a high level defensively that you go all right all else sales put push that button and we can do something for a few minutes yeah it’s interesting it’s an interesting conundrum and we’ll talk about it more all throughout the offseason and once the roster gets finalized it it’ll be become a real even more real conversation we’ll talk about that but coming up I just want to ask the question does Klay Thompson solve more of a problem with his three-point shooting or does he cause more of a problem with the defensive downgrade from Derrick Jones Jr curious what Reggie thinks about this talk about that coming up you don’t believe you shouldn’t be here today’s episode is brought to you by better help lockon NBA shut it down let’s go [Music] all right Reggie we’re talking about the Mavs roster we’re talking about the final roster spot but I got a question about one of the uh the top three roster spot top four roster spot Klay Thompson I don’t know if we’ve gotten your full opinions on Klay Thompson and all that but does Klay Thompson do you believe solve more of a problem that the Mavericks had with his three-point shooting or cause more of a problem with his defensive downgrade going from Derrick Jones Jr who’s very good Al ball Defender to Klay Thompson and where he is as 34 years old going into his you know the the back end of his career here after a couple injuries I think there’s an absolute answer to this right like you know me you know me to be someone who can H and haul at times and kind of play no yeah yeah kind of incredible right not even in this episode have you no no no he clearly solves issues he clearly clearly solves issues man we spent a lot of time talking about that third score that was necessary there was uh all through the playoffs where I talk about kind of searching we talk about that like um when it comes to maybe offensively like uh playmaking they were searching for shooting during the postseason all the way around that is not the case right you might get a game where he’s knocking not knocking down shots necessarily but you will never lose confidence in his ability to do so and that means a whole hell of a bun hell of a bunch that will change a lot of the dynamic here I say all of that understanding that I think he also raises questions defensively right knew I could count on you I knew I could count on you reie still exists but shooting the shooting the shooting just matters so much more in this like just I mean look the math of this matters in a good amount I’m looking over there at the Nuggets like yo you lose kcp and they already were shooting some of the fewest uh three-pointers in League like we saw we saw the Celtics take just so many threes that it changed the math on this you have to be able to knock those down and Klay Thompson gives you an ability to absolutely make that a lot more viable for yourself with the prowess of LCA donic and Kyrie Irving so no that matters so much more but what and I keep using the same word and I’ll keep going back to it because I think this is going to be now like just the thing that I say what does the degradation of Klay Thompson look like because we know that he is not the elite Defender anymore where does he land on good very good solid okay because that will mean a lot because like then if that’s the case you’re looking at probably what starts as your starting lineup maybe shifts round but your your your three I mean guard type guys if that is a problem for him are guys that can get driven by and that just adds so much more pressure to your back line I mean you did it to Utah a few years ago when Rudy Gober was still there right people were banging on Rudy goar’s head because not because of his failures but because everybody around that around him on Utah couldn’t defend and they was trying they were trying to play defense just with the center that does not work in this league now and if if Klay Thompson of course that’s a far stretch but if Klay Thompson is like bad defensively okay defensively and now they can attack your your perimeter defense at a high clip because he has to play a good amount of minutes because of that shooting that can be an issue I just don’t think that he’s going to be won that bad and two I think that the numbers game on the three-point shooting should help normalize some of that but I do think that that’s something that’s notable to me I think this question is a playoff question and not a regular season question and I think we’re so stuck in playoff mode which is great because we talked about I mean you know me if you listen to this show I did I listen I did 42 episodes of lock on Mavs in June well he talked about the playoffs a lot like going all through it May June we April we were all through it I did two and a half months basically of playoffs episodes talking about this playoffs talking about playoff questions all getting to it where everything’s more condensed everything matters a lot more everything is squeezed and you have to maximize everything that you can and it’s matchups and it’s all that kind of this is not a regular season problem the Mavericks are going to have I don’t think because I think that your offense is going to is going to carry you at times when it couldn’t cuz they were searching for offense a lot last three months of the Season remember the Mavericks were the number one defense last three months of the season and drick Jones Jr is now being tout is oh my God how could the Mavericks lose Derrick Jones Jr and now they’re screwed and look at look at what do you know how many minutes a game he played in the last three months of the regular season when the Mavericks were the number one defense in the NBA ah that it was definitely sub 25 AB that was a that was a Blues Clues moment where I just wanted everybody at home to answer as well okay very good I was like is am I being asked or is it yeah yeah it’s not yeah uh 20 Derek Jones Jr played 20 minutes a game the last three months of the season and Josh played 24 minutes a game and we know his defense leaves some you know to be desired at times Tim Hardway Jr played 22 minutes a game to end that he played more like this was not a scenario where Derrick Jones Jr was playing like PJ Wasington played 32 minutes a game to end that season Kyrie iring was playing 36 minutes Luca was playing 37 minutes it’s not like it was just these you know Derrick Jones Jr carrying this defense at times uh I think that Klay Thompson can can fill in that role totally fine and then nii fills in Derrick Jones Junior’s role like I just think that it’s it’s going to fill in a lot easier in the regular season than what we’re really freaking out about with the playoff setting does kid have to figure it out by playoff time yeah like that that will be a problem and you’ll have to figure that out but you’ve got 82 games to figure that out plus the preseason and all that like that’s what this is for yeah like I mean ultimately that’s what you sign CL Klay Thompson for right like it’s it’s the postseason right you are in and I I keep saying it this way but ultimately you laid it out very well you’re no longer being judged by the sample of 82 the regular season is nice and it’s to get you to that point but now it fully leans into what Jason Kid Likes doing as a laboratory because you are judged exclusively now on what you do on the playoffs and so that’s that’s the where my my mind goes when I’m evaluating this team but thankfully you don’t start immediately with the tournament you have the opportunity to work through all of this with the regular season and so that’s going to be super insightful and helpful in helping kid in this coaching staff and Sweeney hey thanks for hanging around figure out the def this and Dudley right figure out the defense coach summer league team they have done the last two times that you’ve been in the playoffs to a pretty incredible degree these are these Pro these these problems are it is a problem like they will have to figure it out but I think that the kid won’t have to figure it out until the playoff rotation same kind of thing with his 10-man rotation he really doesn’t have to figure it out until the playoffs come again you got 82 games between now and then to figure it out and that’s still not like three months away three months away we’ll be actually talking about that what’s not three months away is Summer League tomorrow they’ll have the first summer league practice so we’ll hear from that we’ll hear from Jared Dudley we’ll talk about you know all that I’ll probably do an episode about like what what what I expect from summer league and things like that and what we we’re looking for with omx and with with AJ Lawson is it is it put up a shut up time for AJ Lawson uh the Morris twins seem to think so so we’ll we’ll talk about that tomorrow uh and when we hear more from them guys thanks for much listening to lockdown Mavs go listen to reg2 1053 The Fan guys thanks so much for listening to locked on Ms peace 1. Dinwiddie would be the better choice, guy is bigger, a better scorer and is experienced in playoffs playing with Luka. Imagine if it was him instead of Exum (who disappeared) in the playoffs.

  2. Neither go get Pat Beverly. Release Powell and Morris wecdont need cheerleaders we need all players that can contribute on the floor. Start Irving at point Luka at 2, Klay at 3, PJ at 4 and Liv at 5. Second unit Exum but I perfer Beverly, Hardy at 2, Grimes at 3, Naji and OMax at 4 and Gafford at 5. That gives you 11 players. Other spots should go to young players not old cheerleaders. Forget Dinwiddie & Smith rather have DOE than either.

  3. DSJ all day, Spencer Dinmiddie doesnā€™t want to be here. Heā€™s begging the Lakers to open up a roster spot to bring him back. He can stay over there

  4. I want the player that will most likely get on the court to spell Luka and/or Kyrie. We have got to find a way to get them more rest in the regular season.

  5. Question – Don't the Mavs have 1 non-guaranteed spot? If the answer is that it would be great to have both DSJ and Spencer Dinwiddie and we value having that flexibility, could the Mavs waive the non-guaranteed player?

  6. I want neither. Both not good options. Get Malachi Flynn who may have untapped potential or Landry Shamet who we may be able to get with the remaining cap room.

  7. Mavs need DSJ's point of attack defense but they need Dinwiddie's size – to play together with Kyrie – and his playmaking.

  8. Spence canā€™t return after that statement. He couldā€™ve thought of any analogy in the world and thatā€™s what he came up with?!? That backfired right in his face, so Iā€™m rolling with DSJ.

  9. We need someone faster that can leave players behind with his speed. I remember Barea even tho he was small, he was fast kind like TJ McConnell fron IND and I saw him disrupting BOS defense squeezing through defenders and creating for others while putting up points

  10. I'd rather get rid of some 1 we really don't need and make it open for Gary trent jr and if enough for dsj or Spencer come on either that or get dfs back home

  11. DSJ- he wants to go here. We need a stopper. Who we asking to guard the best point guard or shooting guard if needed? Its only Grimer. We need DSJ. Dinwiddie will just stall Hardy's progress.

  12. @LockedOnMavericks There is a solution that I havenā€™t heard you talk about: 1) Cut Lawson. 2) Sign Spencer to be the 3rd ball-handler/initiator. 3) Sign Reggie Bullock to be the end of the bench POA defender.
Ok hear me out- The Mavs need a POA defender and another ball-handler. Bullock would be more of an ā€œin case of emergencyā€ spot but in an emergency he could produce. In an emergency Lawson isnā€™t doing anything for you. And it might even allow them to take Maxi out of the rotation with the bench 5 being Spencer, Grimes, Bullock, Marshall, Gafford.
(Or I guess they could cut Lawson and sign DSJ and Spencer but Bullock can still hit a 3 while also defending, where as DSJ can not shoot)

  13. I could go with either Dennis Smith Jr or Spencer Dinwiddie – soā€¦ the answer is something I donā€™t know the answer to, which is ā€œwhich one fits best in terms of personality and compatibility with teammatesā€?

  14. If we're the Boston and dinwiddie said that sht, he'll be booed for the rest of his life when he appears in the city.

  15. DSJ left cause of Carlisle, KP didn't work out cause of Carlisle… I'm not completely right, but am I wrong?

  16. As much as i love dsj but with his 3pt shoot he is almost unplayable beside kyrie or luka. He is no long enough to be switchable aswell. He just doesn't fit at all into our system. Widdie though would actually be a great addition. He showed he can play the perfekt 3. Guard role from the bench and is big enough on Defens. He would be the only player from the bench which can create his own shot and still pass out of this situations. That's so valuable. … winwiddie is a nobrainer for the last spot to me, even with what he said last season.
