busy off season for the Brooklyn Nets the trade excitement has died down but we have samples not only of where they could still go with a cam Johnson or a Dorian finny Smith and changing and reshaping this roster but a comp out there in the NBA landscape that reminds us just how successful they have been in the Mel Bridges trade this summer yeah it’s funny like you in some ways it feels like the big move for the Nets has been done right the K Bridges piece is uh is is in the books and I you know we’ve discussed that and I’m sure we’re going to discuss that probably for years to come honestly and but so then that happens and it’s such a ground shifting moment for the organization and now you know a week later whatever week plus later you’re thinking well what next you know what’s the next move like why haven’t they done this thing you just get the the wheel the gears of the NBA landscape continue to turn whether the Nets probably want to or not but um I think it’s clear they still want to I think it’s clear that there’s going there are guys that are on the roster right now who are not going to I mean at worst finish the season with them yeah but I guess what we’ll talk about here or not I guess what we will talk about here is you know what options for them still are on the table because some options were kind of removed for them over this weekend uh there was there’s a few spots where it seemed like cam Johnson seemed like Dorian finny Smith could be landing spots not to say they’ve completely dried up but some of those teams made moves that would seem that they kind of of went they just went a different direction from adding those guys so not like the landscape is totally Barren for them I think there’s moves to to be made but for sure like the list of potential suitors has ground down a bit here which you know if you’re in if you’re a Nets fan you’re still in full reset mode which you should be you might say to yourself hey what are we doing here we want to make sure that marks doesn’t just kind of completely let go of the Rope here when it comes to getting value for the guys that still have it on the roster and it’s one of those things where teams now that had draft assets and that’s what when you’re in a rebuild you’re you’re most interested in getting back in return for any of these trades we want more draft Capital more opportunities down the road so when those teams which it’s easier for them to look at their roster and say okay we’re in kind of a win now mode let’s give up a pick here a pick there and we’ll go ahead and bring in another key player as those teams dry up I think it becomes logical you start to turn to teams that say and we’ll get to this at some point down the road what Chicago ended up doing with Demar D Ro and signning trade scenarios that get put into place or agreements for when they end up in their final destination likewise if you look at a cam Johnson specifically and around the NBA landscape and say where can we make an improvement to this roster that doesn’t hurt our long-term agenda of rebuilding that maybe brings us in a player that’s young and has been somewhat cast aside in their first iteration of their NBA career how do we get there and maybe lose some of the draft Capital value that we initially want right because I think that’s there’s a difference here between what could happen if you wait until the trade deadline you may still get picks from someone from a team but if we look at a team like Cleveland and a player like Isaac aoro who is now right now an a restricted free agent excuse me but can come back in on the sign and trade to facilitate a move like this is he a player that you would like we’ve done before in the past take a flyer on say hey 23 years old right age range good skill set and probably still valuable two three years down the road yeah you know we had discussed aoro like leading into last year year and a half ago we brought him up when we were kind of like hey Nets need to be diving into sort of like post hype maybe it hasn’t really worked out you know he’s still kind of young probably not going to get there all the way but worth the worth the effort because the where the Nets just stood in terms of their overall roster and just being you know decidely not young at the time I stand by a lot of what we said at the time uh with that even even applies more now like with a guy like aoro is it like the splashiest move ever no you know at age 23 has it completely worked out I mean no though things did improve last year 39% from three on more shots did play some more minutes started a bunch of games for them mostly because Cleveland uh really had some like major major major injury issues during the season but overall like does it fit like the sort of the kind of guy in a different spot that could expand his game a little bit that could just be offered a new lease on life like that to me that still applies here and so if it was if he’s like just not part of what they want to do or just doesn’t totally fit what they need like they’re not the exact kind of wing they need then yeah I would totally do this for if I was the Nets like again the Nets are in a better situation to do this now and we wanted to do it when the situation was worse and this isn’t like this Pro Isaac aoro is gonna be the next star kind of guy it’s just that hey they already have a ton of picks at some point you need players it’s preferable that those players are young they demonstrated some NBA core skill set like IE shooting threes that seems like it could translate like those are the those those are shots that that are kind of worth it especially if the other team doesn’t want to give up draft capital and they don’t want to commit to a longer term contract or something like that which the Nets we need to consider also so there’s moving Parts here but overall on a high level like these still represent to me the kind of moves that should really really probably think pretty hard about and he’s also a player we’ll talk I want to talk about contract projections and what that would look like for the Brooklyn Nets short long term but when you go over and you know we talk about skill sets that you want to have on any team no matter what if you’re shooting 39% on three attempts per game from Beyond The Arc this past season that should be exciting not not even so much for the Brooklyn Nets though great knock down some threes while you’re here that’s the kind of skill set that if you bring him in at 23 years old if you have him under contract guess what when you’re working towards a rebuild when you’re in a rebuild now you can go ahead and say hey if you want to call us about this player someone that maybe you can’t get a draft pick for now if you’re Cleveland in this moment but you can turn him into Cameron Johnson the Nets can turn around and say he becomes Draft Pick X Y or Z for us over a season or two from now even if he’s not the perfect model of player as you say no this guy is not going to be the next star that you got lucky as he fizzled out in Cleveland but he can be valuable to another team and three-point shooting perimeter shooting obviously matters in that land ese coming up here in a second though want to talk about what the projected contract could look like for him why that helps facilitate a about of course the offseason as Doug bench at the top it feels like hey it’s all over offseason’s done everybody move on time for the regular season we know we also have summer camp uh coming up sorry summer league summer league coming up this isn’t just going off for the weekend Doug and maybe having some fun and making s’mores at night they’re also going to play basketball that’s what summer league is for Nets will obviously be down in Vegas but the Isaac from the Isaac aurus standpoint there’s two things that are interesting here the the athletic had put this out going back a little bit earlier into the offseason just talking about projected contracts for players where they were potentially going to land when it came to a Coro they put him in at a board value of 22.7 million and something in the range of a three-year up potentially towards $80 million just point stop on that is do you think there’s any risk in signing a cororo to a contract that’s going to be 25ish million aav now and then turning around at any point maybe two years from now and saying boy we really wish we had that money summer of 26 having 25 million tied up into this particular player is prohibitive for what we want to do if you’re Brooklyn yeah I mean that one feels like that those feel like not the business they probably want to be in right and uh you just because that number feels pretty big you want I mean look when it comes to percentage of the cap going forward you don’t probably want to be tied in the Nets you don’t want to be tied into something unless it’s a sure thing at this point I would say right I think that they’re going to be in they’re going to be in take on bad muddy mode and we’ll talk about a little bit more of this with uh Yosi Goslin who I’m pretty sure we’re going to have on for tomorrow’s episode uh and this is something we can bring up around like you know what are optimal ways that they need to like sort of structure their cap going forward my gut take on that is like that number is way too high and especially if it comes on years out that they just take bad money don’t make bad money right like you’re you’re Mak bad money on the contract a new contract right right exactly so if it’s like you know if it’s like Caleb Martin money like what he signed in Philly right which is like under 10 like those numbers per year I think that you’re like okay that’s just feels risk-free then at that point the Cavs might see that the same way and like that at that point you just don’t need to take on more it’s like hey we can keep it cheap it’s a little hard to know exactly sort of where those numbers are going to go for a guy like him in restrictive free agency but overall I probably would say like big bigger numbers years out is not the business that they want to be in even if it was suggested that like that was sort of around where their cap hit could be yeah I think what we’re seeing play out here in this offseason is you know even like teams taking on bad money like no one wants to do it right and so I actually don’t even know where like I think we kind of thought that was where the Nets would be next year I’m actually not even positive that that’s where they might be um just because this cap stuff is so harmful kind of at some point that you just like don’t just don’t want to need it we’re seeing these teams get stuck with these bad contracts in a really really bad way unless they end really soon and even then it’s like not totally clear the teams just kind of want to take on the money so I think I’d be a little hesitant around those numbers yeah there’s probably some world I mean another conversation for another episode where the Nets are looking at who are the guys you sign let’s say next off season that are not eating not eating contracts from Bad teams just the kind of muddling middle of the road players that when you Cobble it all together you get to the salary floor and you don’t even risk taking on some of the bad contracts from other teams even if it means increasing some of their draft assets one of the things too I did want to talk just a little bit about fit for aoro and it’s a weird way to phrase it when it comes to Brooklyn Nets they’re kind of in a our roster is an amius mob right now but the one of the reasons why Cleveland is in this spot and why a few teams are going to be in the spot and maybe why the patient go to the regular season with Dorian finy Smith and Cameron Johnson still applies the reason why you’re talking about signing and trading a cororo to be able to make it work with the Brooklyn Nets is because they don’t have any real draft Capital to send out they don’t have first rounders until 2030 and 2031 so now that you’ve gotten to the point where you can open up 2031 and you can have those back-to-back first round years where you can afford to give one away there are teams and Cleveland Falls in this category of what could we really have offered you previously what could we get to the point where you still value cam Johnson and I think that’s probably the biggest problem that Cleveland and other teams in that vein are these second tier kind of competitive in eastern or western conference want to make moves but just don’t have the ability to call Shawn marks up in this instance and say Hey you want a first round pick and a and a swap I I don’t have the swap to give you or an extra second round pick whatever it may be Cleveland is in an unfortunate spot where they’re kind of looking at the short term maybe not being at the level clearly not being at the level of Boston or of New York or of Philadelphia and then also looking in the cers and saying guess what we don’t have a lot to move on here down the line it makes them a fascinating study when it comes to Donathan Mitchell and where they’re going to end up over the next few seasons yeah and you know some teams are caught in this middle ground right of not having all the Assets in the world to boost and also looking at their team and saying we’re just not gonna be we’re not as good as Boston this is going to be tough maybe we’re not as good as Philly now you know we’ll see about well maybe we’re not as good as the Knicks and you know I mean some of those ones are a little kind of we need to see it but in general you might be on the outside looking in and when you’ve already made like you said they already made their trade for Mitchell the first time which sent out a bunch of their assets um and you and just you’re caught a little bit and I think that probably you know maybe maybe that’s a sign that like the Nets too like have a few less teams to do business with because there’s other teams that are sort of caught like that or they just made their move like you know the Kings made a move and got in on and and got in on on DDR and so there’s like okay well that’s kind of it do they have enough to send out more stuff here I mean they got out of that without having to send picks out so they’re they still have something in their Coffer the Sixers well they got you know they got Caleb Martin and Paul George in the cap space and they still have they still have some picks so maybe there’s something to be said for getting in on CJ or DFS like that right with a KJ Martin you know signning trade or something so I I think there are some of these other teams that do exist in terms of still being able to get there but there are teams that just either the fit isn’t right so whatever it’s off the table or yeah they just don’t have ton a ton to play with because they’ve already made Moves this is not a good example but like a team like Minnesota might be like this right it’s like oh could they use another Wing they just lost Kyle Anderson maybe they could use another kind of wing guy all right well they don’t really have anything to trade right right like they’ve like they’re already all in on goar and these other guys and so I’m just using them as an example to say there’s probably other teams that would would like to have would love to put in a call to Shawn marks about the the wings that the Nets have but like marks would just be like ah no you know I’ll just wait for another team to I’ll wait for another team to crop up that might need them right someone who has something not a team that maybe wants them and has something it’s a risk there’s risk to risk worth taking Maybe not maybe they go into the season and you’re like they’re still on the team and that’s going to feel weird because it feel it would feel like they’re not destined to be there for long but also sometimes what the season opens up is a new team that didn’t think they needed something and now they do like there there’s another part of that yeah there’s another part of the equation which is we just don’t have all the information now and a month two months three months four months into a season things just can trange can change pretty dramatically it’s interesting to think about it from that I was gonna ask I was going to deposit another another thought around the risk reward for Brooklyn of going into the season with these players we talked about it a little bit before okay maybe it thins out a little but ultimately you’re not I don’t I don’t think that Shawn marks is running too big of a risk in terms of where the pool of teams is that wants a player like Cameron Johnson a little bit more expensive but has years on the contract Dorian finny Smith more of a rental situation for him even though he has the player option I think those things become interesting but the other side of it is when you mentioned about maybe teams that would want a player like this that don’t need one right now don’t feel like they’re a certain level I find that more exciting when you think about the back end of the eastern and western conferences not at a high level because usually contending teams don’t have a lot of assets remaining they spent a lot of it whether it’s on signs for big free agents whether it’s bringing in Donovan Mitchell Etc but if you’re a fringe team and you think this is year one of getting into the playoff picture and then over the next couple of Seasons we want to make bigger moves well then Cameron Johnson with three years on his contract can be worth it and you have the assets to go get that player so I I wonder if that’s what Shawn marks looks at and says hey there could be teams that want to make modest gains in the playoffs it’s not about Cameron Johnson being the missing piece on contending team X Y or Z and that can open up a much wider range of conversations to be had here still always comes down to price point obviously coming up here in a second let’s think about whether or not it’s a good or bad move to hold out until the regular season for the Brooklyn Nets and also Isaac auro back to the top that trade what does he mean inside of this roster as we look inside the back court and think about a couple of different players that could use some value on this team we’ll dive into that coming up next all right before that let you know this show is sponsored by better thinking about ways to not only move Cameron Johnson get a little bit of value back but also potentially improve this team and bring in a young asset that could be worth it whether on this roster or in trades later on the reason why I like the sign and trade Accord for cam Johnson scenario is something that we talked about before this offseason when you look inside the depth chart for the Brooklyn Nets let’s assume that Cameron Johnson at some point is going to be moved out of here we know that bogdanovic was brought back in you know and he’ll be wearing his old number 44 we’re all elad to hear that he gets to suit up in the original number once again but all of the sudden when you think about this this team take out Cameron Johnson just checking the old depth chart here okay Jaylen Wilson you may be the starter I like it there’s just this world where bringing in a player with some with with a level of NBA starting experience really would matter when you think about value for young players like a Noah Clowney like a cam Thomas like a DQ Whitehead if we Dream a Little Dream on him I do think that it it’s important here and even though bogdanovich could be that guy I think we assume that he’s longed to not be here more than he is to stay all season although who knows if anybody’s going to want him at any point I just think it it matters to not walk into season and say Jaylen Wilson welcome to the world of pressure or any young player X Y or z a guy like aoro whatever he is not he is an NBA caliber player who has started a lot of games in his young career and you could plug him in immediately and say you’re the starter for now and we’ll see what happens over this season we’ll see what happens when we get to the deadline well and remember too like we we talked about this also at some point you just need players like get through this year I mean this year they have guys but next year what’s actually on the books is uh uh really not much at all and especially if they go about trading Cameron Johnson or Dorian finny Smith it’s going to be like the guys on their contract will be like Clon the young guys the rookies and they bar P 70 million or something like that I that’s off the top of my head here but that number at the Baseline going in if bogdanovich has gone as well obviously that number exists now but not then and you clear away Johnson and Dorian finy Smith’s no they have to add money they’re gonna have to add significant money when Ben Simmons contract comes off exactly like they’re have nobody and they’re going to have four draft picks right they’re going to have four first rounders and the second rounders but you can’t just like you really can’t go into a season with just rookies on your on your roster it just like doesn’t work it’s like it can’t just be rookies a cam Thomas Thomas extension and Nick Laxton I don’t think right I you just won’t even meet the salary floor like so just getting just getting some guys in on low money now probably isn’t the worst thing in the world because again like take one year out just go one year out and look at this roster it’s crazy how little is already there and that’s part of the plan the plan is to reset everything right like it’s a groundup it’s basically just a groundup Revival here on trying to just get all new players in here reset the entire timeline this is part of it but again you can’t really run a summer league team as your full-time basketball team s honestly like you said before just simply because of the money like you need to spend like they you have to you have to re uh reach minimums there’ll be lots of options like I said they’ll probably take on someone’s someone’s you know strapped cash at some point but it’s just like a really really interesting thing so I think it’s like sometimes hard to picture what things look like a year out and having just NBA caliber dudes just around to either rehabilitate or just kind of just honestly roll the balls out and start running up and down the court I I kind of I know it’s really funny the Nets are just in a really really funny position that I do think it’s hard having not been in the position before it’s very difficult to sort of picture how it plays out because I mean I guess they have Shake Milton although that that number’s not guaranteed anyway so it’s like it’s yeah it’s just a crazy crazy situation they find themselves in hoay it’s good it’s good like this is where they should be but it’s just it’s kind of funny how the the pieces are moving around the table here and the other thing that I I think we’ll probably have a more extended conversation on is in the short term in how these pieces fit and we’ve mentioned this again I think it’s going to be one of the themes of this summer and going into the regular season is how do you make sure that a player like cam Thomas is progressing and not maybe regressing or progressing in one key car one key area being a bucket getter and kind of forgetting about the rest of it his development really matters here and I think there has to be some level of trust in Fernandez and the new coaching staff and saying hey like we have a plan in place you accurately brought up a couple episodes ago that it feels like there was an Eyes Wide Open conversation when hiring him and saying this is where we’re headed this is what you’re in for and we’ve put you in position because we want you to develop this team over the course of the rebuild and we’re going to have all these young players coming in but a guy like cam Thomas I’ll make the comper uh PBP stats when you go over and look at Cleveland and you think about auro and Mitchell and Darius Garland and you had said this when we talked about Cleveland originally a little bit overblown in this in the idea that oh you know Donovan Mitchell and Garland couldn’t play together well they had success when they were on the court they played to a plus 6.42 overall net rating but what was interesting is with all three of them on the court together aoro Garland and Mitchell A minus 11.79% look and I I wonder if certain molds of players are just better suited to pair together and how Brooklyn looks at that when they see opportunities like this potentially to move a Johnson to move a Dorian finin Smith well it really I mean look what what we’ve seen with Cam Johnson especially when you posted that dsj stuff is like he gets helped a lot when he has someone that can actually play defense next to him in the back court like pressure off yeah mean just guard somebody I mean like cam I think we saw the effort increase but he’s still not a good Defender and you need to have someone with him that can guard point of attack and like actually pressure the ball schroer could really couldn’t you know Den Wy was didn’t what he got guarded up but he really wasn’t like a point of attack Defender he was more kind of like take someone else’s sort of like three and defend those guys like that’s kind of how he existed defensively um right and so and then you look at aoro it’s like not surprising that those numbers are like that because if you if you slot aoro up to the three then you’re really small right like if you’re if you’re if it’s Donovan Mitchell Darius Garland and Isaac aoro I mean that is a very very small one through three that doesn’t have like an elite defender on it even though I think aoro is a a pretty good Defender and so but now if you push him to the two a little bit you trust cam Thomas with the ball a little bit more and you have him just and then you just have bigger bodies behind him yeah right like Clowney and and uh you know Claxton and then you know whoever theying and Bogey and and then it’s like it’s like doesn’t look it doesn’t it just doesn’t look as bad with the understanding that like that team’s not winning the championship or anything but developmental point it’s a better rep over reps that you can put on the court together around cam Thomas it would seem like it it would seem like it so I I think that you know this is sometimes where guys get just sort of mispaired or sort of misg grouped and by no fault of their own it’s just like hey this is what we have we when we pair Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland were conceding that that back court is not going to be amazing defensively and we have to try to figure out sort of like how we can piece it together after them and guess what the value of doing that in Cleveland scenario is we have Donathan Mitchell we’ll s we’ll sacrifice some defensive value because we have a star if you’re your team let alone being in a rebuild but if you don’t have a star that’s when sacrificing in any position in any role starts to really do damage for you so I didn’t put out those full numbers here on today’s episode you can go check it out over on X but um we that’s probably a future episode breaking down that sample size and then looking at if not aoro in a big sign in trade scenario how do the Nets make sure they have value around cam Thomas so I think there’s good discussions to have there to make sure we don’t find ourselves talking about cam Thomas the flamethrower that doesn’t really have anything else to his game yeah and so yeah tons of discuss like still lots of ways this can go like we might get through this week and say oh we figured like know they made a trade it’s like it’s funny when we get into this part of the off season it looks a little things really kind of do start slowing down uh considerably so I’m not sure we’re going to 100% see it but you know Marx has done deals and and I think they’re still probably need for some of these teams so we’ll see as we go like I said hopefully having a guest on here to talk a little salary cap break down some of that Nick Laxon contract and how that’s pretty we think pretty advantageous for the Nets going forward uh so all that more make sure you subscribe to lockon Nets over on
