Mavericks Rumors On Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall & Quentin Grimes + 2024 Western Conference Outlook

[Music] what’s up guys welcome into Mavericks today by chat sports I’m Jeffrey cooperstein on today’s show we are talking the six team trade which became official that landed the Mavericks Klay Thompson and then just checking in on the Western Conference seeing what the other teams did and where the Mavericks stack up but before we get started please go ahead and give me a follow on Twitter if you want Maverick’s news and Mavs updates before you see them on our you YouTube channel go give me a follow at Jeff cp27 I’m always tweeting about the Mavs I’ll be tweeting about the summer league training camp preseason all of it you name it it’s on my Twitter so go ahead and give me a follow let’s check in on the six team trade that became official on July 6 it is the first of its kind in NBA history and there was no way we could even fit this into a graphic so shout out to Mavs PR for tweeting this out the Mavs received Klay Thompson in a 2025 second round pick the Timberwolves receive a 2031 multiple 2031 pick swaps in a second plus cash Warriors get Kyle Anderson and Buddy healed the Nuggets somehow get cash in this I don’t know how that works uh Charlotte gets Josh green and Reggie Jackson who I actually think are two good pickups for them uh in addition to a couple of seconds and then uh Philadelphia will get a 2031 second as well of course the Mavericks three new guys Klay Thompson coming over from the Golden State Warriors he’ll wear number 31 which is kind kind of strange uh Jason Terry the last guy to wear 31 for the Mavs I thought that number would get retired eventually but if there’s one person to wear uh number 31 I think it’s the future Hall of Famer in Clay Thompson Naji Marshall the other newest Maverick as well he’ll wear number 13 after signing a three-year $27 million contract with the Mavs coming over from the Pelicans and then Quinton Grimes will wear number five after coming over in the trade from the Detroit Pistons I wanted to ask you guys a little bit of a trivia question here that got my mind juggling a little bit name the last people to wear 31 13 and 5 I already gave you 31 it’s obviously the goat Jason Terry the jet as we call him the jet is on the runway but if you can name the last people to wear 13 and five you’re awesome and I’ll give you a shout out on the next show it is people that you probably don’t even remember played for the Mavericks and I’ll just leave it at that now let’s go ahead and check in on the Western Conference where did the Mavericks Rivals Stack Up and what did they do in this offseason we’ll get to that here in just a moment but we couldn’t do today’s show if it wasn’t for our friends at Fanatics and even though the NBA draft is over they still have these sick draft hats from the 2024 draft Melvin ainsa was the only one who even got to wear these but go to chatsports.com Mavs draft courtesy of our friends at Fanatics they have this dope little flat bill they have the curved as well all kinds of styles and even other hats available just make sure you do it with our friends at Fanatics go to chatsports.com mapd draft and get you one today here’s kind of what the Mavericks did this off season so far obviously they picked ainsa with the 51st overall pick uh they added Klay Thompson Quinton Grimes and Naji Marshall they lost Derrick Jones Jr Josh green and Tim Hardway Jr via the trade obviously coming off the first strip to the NBA finals since winning the title in 2011 first time in 13 years I was a freshman in high school the last time they got to the final so it was a really good run and I think the Mavericks uh improved themselves this offseason and well position themselves uh to go back to the finals for the second straight season but here are the biggest threats I believe to the Mavericks Western Conference Supremacy this year you have the Oklahoma City Thunder the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Denver Nuggets out of these three teams I believe the Western Conference representative in the NBA Finals will be one of the Mavericks Thunder Timberwolves or nuggets that’s just how I see it uh let’s get into the Minnesota Timberwolves here who I thought had an interesting off season drafted Rob Dillingham number eight uh who I think is an interesting fit for them they really needed an explosive guard as well Terren Shannon Jr who was one of the best players in college basketball last year they get him at the end of the first round they added Joe Engles and they signed him to a decent contract from the magic uh they lose Kyle Anderson to the Warriors in that six te Mega trade that happened and it was their first trip last year to the Western Conference Finals since kg in 2003 and 2004 so I think the the Timberwolves who had a 56 and 26 record last year uh they’re well they’re well poised to make another Deep Run uh in the postseason the Denver Nuggets they traded six second round picks to go get Holmes there at number 22 the the second round pick changing of hands in the NBA by the way is out of control figure it out Adam Silver uh but they added Mr holiday Jay Huff as well they brought back DeAndre Jordan but they did lose two key players in cavius calwell Pope and Reggie Jackson Pope obviously went to the magic on a three-year $66 million contract Reggie Jackson going over to the Charlotte Hornets and they have not missed the playoffs since the 2017 18 season uh the Nuggets I still believe are going to be really good I do think they might have taken a step back and they might be the fourth out of these four teams that we’re talking about right now here are the Oklahoma City Thunder who have had a fascinating off season got niika toic with the 12th overall pick as well as Jones and Mitchell in the draft the addition of Isaiah hartenstein is fascinating I think hartenstein is a really good fit for the Oklahoma City Thunder however I don’t believe that contract is going to end up being a good one 3 years and $87 million for hartenstein I like the player I don’t think he’s worth 27 plus million dollars a year so we’ll see how that one works out I did love the trade though of Josh giddy for Alex Caruso I think Caruso is a fantastic fit there in Oklahoma City and I believe he’ll go right into the starting lineup and that’ll kind of push Lou Dort uh back to the bench maybe even he’s a trade chip before the season starts and they also resigned Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins who do you guys think is the biggest threat threat to the Mavericks in the west this year if I had to say right now I think I’m going to go with the Oklahoma City Thunder I think that team is the youngest they’re the hungriest and they’re the most complete but let me know what you guys think down in the comments section while you’re down there please be sure to hit that subscribe button we’re giving you all the latest Mavericks news rumors analysis informative and entertaining coverage 100% free so please be sure to hit that subscribe button right now taking a look at the rest of the West here just guys who I think will be uh playoff contenders slash sort of Rivals for the Mavs the Los Angeles Lakers they picked Dalton connect and bronnie James obviously bronny James already making headlines in the summer league if you’re watching ESPN uh they they also brought back D’Angelo Russell who opted in Max Christie on a foure $32 million deal Max Christie has barely played any basketball so I don’t know how that happened uh they retain Jackson Hayes and cam reddish as well uh it’s a new era in Los Angeles with JJ reck is the head coach we’ll see what happens out there I know the Lakers are soap opera every time that they touch the court so we’ll have to see what happens there and on the other side of well not even they’re not at crypto.com anymore they moved out to Englewood the Los Angeles Clippers a beautiful new Arena they took Max Christy’s brother cam with the 46 overall pick and they obviously added Derrick Jones Jr who left from the Mavs they brought back uh Nick Batum they added Chris Dunn Mo bomba and Kevin Porter Jr as well Kevin Porter Jr uh obviously with the Leal issues played over in Europe this past season had a decent year so they bring him back try to give him a second lease at life in the NBA they did lose Paul George and Mason plumbley I think the Clippers are seriously a kawhai Leonard injury away from being really bad like they could be a 30 win team and we all know kaai gets injured every single year at some point so if he gets somewhat of a serious injury and they miss he misses more than 10 to 15 games the Clippers could be in serious trouble this season the Pelicans uh they’ve been they’ve interesting as well drafted Eve Mei out of Baylor with the 21st overall pick and just before we started filming they signed Daniel Ty uh to a contract so that’s the going to be their yonas valent chunis replacement who they lost in free agency they also lost Naji Marshall as well as Larry Nance Dyson Daniels uh in the trade with de Jon Murray and then Cody Zeller as well uh look the they don’t really have like a great Center E Mei is good Daniel Ty is a solid rotational big but the loss of tent tunus is going to be underrated although I do love the addition of dejonte Murray I think that back court between Murray and McCullum as well as Zion and the front Court he may have to play some five I think they’re going to be uh very explosive and athletic team this year and then finally the San Antonio Spurs who are trying to be on the come up here and I like some of the moves they’ve made drafted Stefan Castle the Do-it all guard out of Yukon uh they also got Harrison Ingram the Dallas product of St Marks he played at North Carolina last year I think those are two good pickups uh additions they added Chris Paul as well and I think they’re trying to build around uh Victor wanyama and Deon vasel two really good players there they also got Harrison Barnes by the way in the Demar d rozan three teams trade so that’s on me so they added Harrison Barnes and Chris Paul to uh wise veterans who could kind of help move along these young Bulls of wanyama and vasel I think the Spurs have a good mix of young players and Veterans and I think that the record of 22 and 60 will vastly improve will they make the playoffs probably not can they push for a play spot I do think that’s possible I want to set this over under for you guys right now given what the Mavericks have done this offse I don’t think they’re quite done yet uh they still have to go get another point guard maybe resign Morris maybe get the Morris twins they have at least one roster spot open so we’ll see what happens there but as of right now 54 and a half wins for the Mavericks next LA next year excuse me they won 50 last year can they get up to 55 type O for over or type U for under that’ll be it for today’s show thank you guys so much for tuning in to Mavericks today by chat sports I’m Jeffrey Cooper and again go give me a follow on Twitter at jeor cp27 because if any Mavericks news happens before that you’ll see it there and be sure to hit that thumbs up icon as well While Mavericks news has gone quiet after the first week of 2024 NBA Free Agency, Mavs GM Nico Harrison is planning to unveil the new Mavericks players they acquired in the 2024 NBA offseason in Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall and Quentin Grimes. With the additions of these 3, can the Mavs make it back to the NBA Finals for the second consecutive year? Mavs head coach Jason Kidd will have a tall task ahead of him balancing the rotation headlined by Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

  1. Over

I think it’ll take Klay less time to gel and Kidd to work out rotations

Maybe a mixed back to start the year but think by trade deadline they should be cook’n

    Also pending Luka injury updates

Will he get load management this season?
