How the Sacramento Kings sealed the deal with DeMar DeRozan

that just shouldn’t be something that’s taken for granted all right Chris let’s get to this Anthony Slater article he is one of the best in the biz oh yeah friend of the show and he breaks down everything really how all of this went down essentially and specifically when Demar got into the building and everything the Kings did to get this done yeah this is absolutely great work by uh Anthony Slater here uh he was in the building when dear was there on Saturday and got a great video of dear walking out from the tunnel uh definitely go check that out but yeah he outlines everything here from the moment Demar D rozan literally stepped off the plane to land in Sacramento uh he writes when Demar stepped off the plane he met with J he was met by Jay Triano the king’s lead assistant coach who also so happens to be Tamar DeRozan’s first NBA coach uh he then goes on to tell a story of back in 2009 during the pre-draft process uh when J Triano and and then Raptors GM Brian Angelo flew to Oakland to watch D rozan work out in the pre-draft and they were so impressed that they promised dear uh that if he was available with the ninth pick they’d select him and then eventually did so their relation go their relationship goes all the way back uh Slater writes that uh Triano maintains a great relationship with dzan after coaching him in his first two seasons uh and it gave him a sense of familiarity the second he landed uh they also had several veteran players and assistant coaches uh including Leandro Barbosa reach out he spent two seasons with dear in Toronto and pitched him as well so this was clearly uh like we saw was Sasha V zenov A all hands on deck kind of Recruitment and uh the Kings I know we we call them the Kentucky Kings because they have uh you know dearen and Trey lyes and all that but they really are starting to act like John caliper days Kentucky with this uh recruiting pitch that they’re on D rozan wanted once he landed to visit the city and the facility uh Triano brought him in late Saturday morning they spent much of the day hanging out with Mike Brown and uh Luke LS along with Triano they toured the practice gym the waight room in the arena they chatted basketball uh D rozan then watched dearen fox go through one of his offseason workouts with Luke LS Fox and D rozan then went to lunch we have to get our best people on where they went to lunch that’s all I was thinking when I read that I was like somebody saw them eating lunch and was like I know a cook or one of the hosts or something had to have said is that dearon fox and like somebody had that scoop early and sat on it so I we need to figure out uh where it is that Demar and dearn eight uh definitely need to figure that out uh Fox was a crucial part in the recruitment process League sources tell Anthony Slater and was an advocate of the move we talked about that a little bit earlier but just good on dearen to kind of be taking more of an ownership role as he put out there in the in the Anthony Slater and Sam mayake report earlier uh I think a couple weeks ago uh about declining his extension said a big part of or a part I shouldn’t say a big part but a part of the reason why he was declining was he wanted to see the direction in which Sacramento was going to take their their roster and it’s good that dearn is actively trying to help them in that process uh the king’s front office had to map out a creative way to make it work dzan was searching to make more than 20 mil a year the Bulls weren’t interested in taking money back in a sign and trade so they had to find a third team team that would take on the contract of Harrison Barnes and that’s where the San Antonio Spurs came in with their flexible Financial uh uh financials and in and they were interested in adding uh HB to surround wemi with uh with Chris Paul as wemi enters his second season the Kings gave up a 2031 unprotected first round pick swap a risky move considering uh the expected rise of wemi but Sacramento has been thirsty to upgrade uh the present after finishing outside in so many recent deals uh and then the final note here is d d rozan enjoyed his visit enough to agree to a deal later in the day the terms were leaked at around 7 o’clock and that appeared to be somewhat strategic uh after about 15 minutes of the news breaking D rozan and King’s owner re rad D emerged from the home tunnel at Golden One center right before tip off of the California classic and we’re met with a standing ovation and uh Nate Nate do we have with that that sounds like it’s okay if we don’t but it was absolutely rockus I mean weal we just talked about if they’re going to play not like us every time tomor plays they already did they already did uh it was a really really cool moment and uh definitely a moment in King’s history for sure [Applause] that’s a summer league game that is a summer league audience right there yeah and definitely was was a moment that I think a lot of people will not forget yeah and the whole breakdown it it makes it very clear again going to all the question marks of fit and things like that these are these are some of the best basketball Minds you know in the world and if they feel like they want to do all this to get Demar D Rose in I trust them does that mean they’re gonna win the championship no no it doesn’t mean that they’re not either it what it means is that they knew that something needed to be done and if you’re GNA sit here and you’re gonna call 9163 39140 you’re GNA text in you’re gonna you know be on the sack chat you’re GNA complain or whatever it is they have to do something is it exactly what you wanted maybe maybe not but Chris and I for the last month have thrown out a a collection of 15 guys and there’s been somebody that doesn’t like each one of them each and every day so the bottom line is I don’t know that there was a perfect fit but you got a guy who straight up chose Sacramento yep likes the team likes the city so far likes everything about the organization so let’s rock and roll from there it’s that simple 100% Beggars cannot be choosers this is not Chipotle dear D rozan is uh an elite player and you know I was thinking about it before uh we I got in today and you know the all the players we were talking about Demar rosen’s a better player than Kyle kosma you could make an argument that maybe Brandon Ingram’s a better player I would say that they’re at the very least we can settle and say that they’re in the same tier maybe you have Lori marinin a bit ahead of him but Lori marinin we know the price that you were gonna have to pay to get Lori Markin in was gonna be much much higher than the one that they just paid deor I I just don’t see how if you were okay with really any of those names I don’t see how you’re not okay with the Kings getting this and you know again they still have a lot of different options to go from here it’s something that we we liked a lot about the Kyle kosma option mainly was the flexibility it still allowed you after making that move and this is still the case here with Demar D rozan you still have and they talked about it on the morning show so I feel comfortable just throwing it out there you still have Keegan Murray if you want as a trade chip yes they got rid of the 20131 future first swap but they still have a ton of other picks to work with as well uh so so I I just I feel like this is an absolute no-brainer of a move at the very least it’s a talent upgrade and and some fail safe in case one of your stars gets hurt for 15 or 20 games
