once again plus we Al also talk about how the magic are buying themselves it’s not just about fron vogner’s new contract we’ll talk about the Magic’s decision to stick with continuity we’ll get to about him today as well it’s everything’s always connected and we rehash a lot of things so our archives are always there for you but um the magic signings are official and obviously the biggest one the one that is going to make the biggest impact on this team the biggest change to this team is a three-year $66 million deal with cavius calwell reportedly front-loaded by the way according to our friend Keith Smith at spot TR cavus cwell Pope represents something new for the Orlando Magic of course um it’s not just that he is an excellent Defender someone who he says he believes she should be an all defensive team player someone who’s excited to get into a backourt with Jaylen Suggs and and form perhaps the very best backourt in the NBA I think that’s our best defensive back court I don’t say back court in full um but the best defensive back court in the NBA that might be very true at this point um but kavus callwell Pope represents something else he represents belief he represents a player who is at least to some extent buying into what the magic are and who the magic are obviously he is a great player and Jeff welman has said that he is kind of an ultimate plug-in guy they have no doubt that he’s going to enhance what this team does and even if he’s just playing that sort of Gary Harris role his defense is better his three-point shooting is better he is someone that is not going to get in the way of the Magic’s development which is a big part of what the magic are doing here but it’s going to to enhance what they do without having to do very much no what the magic really feel like they’re getting with K T’s calledo pop is something else something that kcp sees himself adding to the team as well we all know the magic beat the Nuggets twice last year you know the magic had played the Nuggets tough we saw Michael Malone dap up hallow B Caro while the team was in Miami last year during the NBA finals and say on camera the magic gave us fits the magic were a tough out the magic beat the Nuggets twice last year and no doubt canavi called well Pope notice that not just that they beat the defending Champions twice they swept them last year but to say that is a team that plays hard they play good defense the kind of team that makes an impression on a veteran player like kcp and look the magiker one of the few teams with money and I I will admit that and I’m maybe I’m putting reading between the lines much here I will admit I very much got the sense that if the Nuggets had offered the same deal to kcp if if if they had offered to keep cavius cwell poke we’re probably not talking about him today um that might just be the reality the magic are still fighting to prove to themselves to the veterans around the league that this is a place to invest in regardless of any of that kyp is here of his options of the places he could go to the magic Orlando is where he chose to be and the thing that he brings to the scene is veteran knowhow beyond the shooting and the skills and all that is the veteran knoow and Championship glue that’s what the magic feel they need and I think it is instructive I think it is important to sit here and say that Jeff weltman who talked to the media as well on Saturday that Jeff wman came out and said it’s one thing to add a player with championship experience it’s another to add one who actually did something on those championship teams cavius callwell Pope was third in minutes per game on both the 2020 Lakers and the 2023 nuggets he is a player who matter an extremely durable player by the way who matter and the magic are expecting that same durability they’re expecting that same knowhow that same guy who made the Stars lives easier to play that many minutes behind only your two stars means you are playing with the Stars a lot that you are someone that is valuable to them regardless of your statistical output he is someone that made those players better he probably heard me say this a few times as we’ve talked that I truly believe in the Horus Grant Theory or what I call the Horus Grant Theory maybe it has another name elsewhere but I believe that what really elevated the 94 team to the 95 team was yes Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardway getting better just like we expect Paulo and fron to get better but we really elevated them to a championship team so quickly in my opinion was Horus Grant the presence of a championship level veteran to kind of teach the guys when to be serious when to focus in how to manage and keep your goals in mind in sight during the course of a long season I I would say this the magic got a lot of this honestly with how they played uh with how they played last year two Joe Engles does not have Championship experience so he’s a little bit different and he was coming off the bench but very clearly he he very much felt like this team didn’t need the veteran guidance didn’t need the veteran to speak up and keep everyone on task everybody in that locker room as they made their first playoff push un the goal understood the task at hand but obviously now we’ve got perhaps problem of more issues we’ve got now expectations put on this team it’s it there there is an expectation to at the very least match what they did last year and that’s getting to a game seven by the way um a five game series in the first round is going to be a disappointment unless the magic are winning it um frankly I think a lot of fans will be disappointed if the magic don’t get out of the first round that’s expectation at a higher level and dealing with that and dealing with kind of keeping that bigger goal in mind as you go through the the the down parts and the adversity of a season that is something that a contavious call will Pope can bring to the table the consistency he will bring will help this team yes the shooting matters yes the defense matters all of those skills matter too we’re not sitting here thinking otherwise with the magic are getting because kcp averag only with 10.1 points per game 40.6% shooting from three this isn’t a guy that’s going to dramatically change uh the offense kcp brings someone who is going to be able to help this team grow as Jeff welman said quote in the NBA we all generate track records players generate their own track record every organization they touch they a trail of people that everybody else talks to in their wake this is one of the most Stellar guys in the league as far as the reputation that he’s generated over the course of his career in the locker room on the bus on the plane in The Practice Facility coaches management performance everybody just Raves about him asavi scell Pope said too quote I just want to come here and bring my Championship mentality the knowledge I know from the teams I’ve been on also my leadership being that vocal leader on the court and off the court being able to get these guys to stay connected the more we stay connected and have that chemistry together is going to make the season easier end quote this is ultimately why the magic paid so much for kavi SK po it wasn’t for the 10 points per game although that will help it’s because he understands what it takes to win he understands what a winning team looks like and while magic have great Vibes and great aura and I think all of us have no doubt that the magic are going to be are going to continue to be very close that they’re going to have that connectivity off the court all of us have no doubt about that cavius callwell Pope helps them go that extra mile get that extra mile that they might otherwise be missing this is going to be a fun signing this is going to be a fun team to be around this is going to be a fun team to play this is going to be a hard-nosed team it’s going to be all the things we expect from these magic teams now and kavus callwell Pop might be the championship glue that takes them to the next level of course that was not the only signing the magic announced on Saturday Mo Vagner Goa bad Gary Harris and yes Jonathan Isaac all back as well and the France vogner Max which we talked about yesterday we’s talk again how the magic are betting on themselves and how rehashing some things I I apologize for that um but today we’re talking about what the magic did and and and and finalizing their free agency and it is important to kind of get back to this um the magic are betting on themselves this offseason um that to me is the theme of what the team is doing um and maybe Jaylen sugs is getting extension maybe he’s not but the magic bringing back pretty much their entire roster to me is a signal that they believe in what they’re doing they believe in their process they believe in who they are they believe they believe they believe they believe in themselves and they’re willing to put their money on themselves now granted Gary Harris and mo Vagner both have Team options on the second year of their of their two-year Deals they apparently wave their in their implied no trade Clauses um the magic are in a very good position to be mobile and Nimble Jonathan Isaac’s contract comes with partial guarantees that don’t become fully guaranteed unless he plays 52 games the previous season according to Mike Scot of hoopsy the magic are bringing a lot of their own players back but if things go wrong they can make moves quickly to change that that much is abundantly clear too so the magic are very much taking care of themselves and I think that is a really important point to make and a really important thing to think about here the magic are Nimble enough to do pretty much anything but the magic are betting on themselves they’re saying we look at the 20123 season the 2024 season and we accomplished everything we wanted accomplish we made the progress we wanted to make and for us and this is something Jeff welman has said in order to help our key players grow poo B Carol fron voger and Jaylen Suggs they believe continuity and a little bit of comfort an understanding of where their teammates are and their teammates understanding the principles the system whatever it is that is what will enable them to grow that will give them the best ticket toward growth that’s what the magic are essentially telling us but like we said last last week continuity does have its limits and and Jeff Wellman when we talked to him on Saturday seemed to admit that to some degree the quote that stood out to me is quote I’ve always said to you guys continuity is only valuable if your team is winning there’s no sense in continuously bringing back the same guys if it’s not working we do feel like we’ve l on a good group of players who fit on the court off the court we feel like kcp is the ultimate fit in and figured out type player that matters to us unquote I want to repeat that first part continuity is only valuable if your team is winning we’d all be critical of bringing back all the same players if the magic went 37 and 45 last year the magic didn’t make the playoffs they didn’t accomplish their goals and so obviously what the magic did required here’s the context of their success the magic feel like they can bring everybody back because they were successful look the Los Angeles Lakers are a great example of a team that feels stuck because they’re bringing everybody back and they didn’t accomplish their goals they made the playoffs but lost in the first round lost in four games in the first round they didn’t get to the championship that they feel they are close to and there’s a sense of desperation from the Lakers perhaps that they need to do more there’s frustration with continuity when you don’t accomplish your goals the magic have accomplished your goals and and they are adding some new players let’s not pretend they’re not kyp is coming in Tristan D Silva’s coming in the magic are adding some new players but everything still starts with that success if the magic struggle if the magic don’t meet that meet their expectations if their flaws become far more apparent then they’re going to move on they’re going to make tweaks they’re going to make changes right now perhaps because the changes aren’t there to make the improvements aren’t apparent the magic seems satisfied with what they’re doing and again they’re betting on themselves they’re betting that the biggest Improvement that they will make is internal it’s Paulo van Caro going from Allstar to Superstar France vogner going from highlevel starter to Allstar Jaylen sugs continuing to improve and grow into one of the best starting guards in the league that’s what the magic are betting on they know what they’re getting from mooger they know what they’re getting from Goa bad they know what they’re getting from Gary Harris to some extent they know what they’re getting from Jonathan Isaac everyone that they resigned is not a bet they know what they’re getting the bet that the magic are making the variable that could change who the magic are is like I said yesterday their own players but that can only last so long it’s not just because and even Jeff wman admitted this the salary Cap’s going to come for them they’re gonna have to they’re G to have to make some difficult choices in the near future the very near future in fact they can’t just keep spending willy-nilly they can’t just keep raising everyone’s salary just by a little bit and continue to move forward they’re going to have to make decisions on players this will not be the Rost forever but it is the roster for right now and so roster the magic appear to have a lot of confidence in growing and developing the way that they feel their team needs to it is a roster the magic feel confident is one that can carry them forward carry them to their next level carry them to whatever they hope to become that’s what the magic are doing that’s what the magic are betting on that’s what the magic are saying to the world that they have The Supporting Cast they need to elevate their team it’s why they didn’t go after dejonte Murray it’s why they didn’t go after Anthony Simons they believe they have the pieces they need to make the most of this phase of their development now that’s half the story and yes the magic are betting on themselves and I I think it’s it’s a fairly decent bet but we all know the magic need more that the magic can’t just be satisfied with what they were last year and so the question now becomes what’s left to do can the magic do a little bit more that’s something we’ll Ponder coming up here in just a moment but first today’s I do think the magic are done I I don’t think the magic have any more moves in the offing I don’t think that they are planning anything else this offseason um I think they they are done if I did my cap math correctly um they now have a payroll of $147 million that puts them over the Sal over the salary cap by about $6 million if my cap math is correct they ended up using the room mid-level exception to sign Goa baz um he’s again making about $7 million a year uh $7 million this year so that fits under the r mid-level exception they waved the cap hold for Marco folz they wav the cap hold for uh chuma ok so those players they no longer have Bird right they can no longer go over the cap to sign them um they finally waved the cap hold for Fran Vasquez the 2005 first round draft pick who never made it to the to the NBA um the magic are essentially done there could be a trade that could happen in August or July but again we just talked about how the magic bet on nity and bet on themselves unless something incredible comes along the magic are probably going into the season with this team with the team that they have and people a lot of people are asking me about this um and we’ll do final offseason grades perhaps uh uh later on when we’re in the Dead part of the summer but a lot of people have kind of asked me about this what do you think of the Magic’s offseason how do you think they did and typically my my and this is kind of the answer settled on that I’ve refined over answering this question over and over again again maybe we’ll do an episode on the whole thing I think the magic are unquestionably better today than they were at the end of the last season uh kavus cwell Pope is a is an upgrade over Gary Harris um you know I think Tristan D Silva will be a very good player you know betting on Anthony Black’s Improvement is a a good thing in my opinion too I think Anthony black probably was ready for more minutes and should have been given some more confidence and should have been given more confidence building moments last year than he was given I I think that he will take a pretty sizable sophomore leap and be a reliable a reliable player for this team uh this season um I think the magic are absolutely a better team however I don’t believe the magic solved the problems that led to their loss in the playoffs and as I look at this team in this season my concern is that the magic are going to face a very similar f where they still may not have enough shooting to get defenses to respect them cavius cwell Pope will help a healthy wend Carter will help fron Vagner bouncing back to around 35% will help um Palo banero is a markedly improved shooter jayen sugs matching his 39.9% shooting or 39% shooting from three last year will go a long way but a lot of this stuff is unproven the magic I think are still little one-dimensional on offense they did not find another kind of Creator and playmaker kavi scell Pope is not a Creator the magic did not answer the point guard question tyo vano told the Washington Post directly we need a table setter the magic are betting that Anthony black becomes one and that Jaylen Suggs and proves one and you’re hearing here a lot of ifs if this if this if this this should happen this this should happen this is still a young young team that has to prove they can do it again and I think the magic will don’t get me wrong I think the magic will be a playoff team uh someone mentioned this in the comments that I believe the magic are a better team although I don’t know if their record will necessarily reflect it I do kind of see the magic not necessarily taking a step back but in the Boggle or in the kind of jumble of the Eastern Conference because Eastern conference is going to be close like it was last year every game is going to count and and it’s and seating is going to come down to that last game of the season just so happened the magic won that last game they got the five seed this year the magic could lose that game and be the seven that’s all I’m saying um it’s it’s gonna be it’s gonna feel very much the same and you know when you’re betting on results of a single game and again that could mean the magic be the for seed like I’m I’m not I’m not out here to to say otherwise um it’s going to be an interesting season for the magic but my concern is that they did not actually solve any of the problems that led to their playoff defeat and obviously I think the magic are done I I don’t think there’s a trade ESPN pitch that the magic should do a sign and trade for tyus Jones trying to make that happen would require trading at least Cole Anthony to free up the cap room the magic again are over the cap it would cost a lot actually more than Cole anthy because Ty stron is gonna get more than 12 million uh at some point eventually he’s going to sign for something for more than 12 million um the magic only have minimum offer minimum contracts to offer now and so again I think the magic are done I think a signing trade would be really difficult to pull off and I think it would be disruptive and I don’t think again the Magic’s whole bag is they they don’t want to be disruptive they like their team shout out to Odis Smith um they like their team they like the continuity they’re betting on that continuity at this point um the magic I think are done but yeah they could still use some more three-point shooting they got a lot to prove on that end they could still use a table setter and a point guard to me a point guard would just settle everything down and and organize the team a little bit more in a way that they weren’t at times last year um to help reduce turnovers especially uh we know the magic will be an elite defensive team I I I think I think we’re I think that’s the one thing we do know and that’s going to keep them in and help them win a lot of games But ultimately the magic had the worst offense among all teams that made the playoffs last year made the postseason last year um the magic had not had an offense outside the bottom 10 in the league since Dwight Howard left since 2012 that’s a stat they need to retire this year at minimum that’s the stat they need to retire this year and while I think Pao will be better and fron will be better there’s no guarantee they do that without some major changes on offense and that would have been a place where the magic could have gotten a tius Jones or gone after D’Angelo Russell if he’d opted out go trade for an anrey Simon someone who would very clearly help the team’s offense but very clearly again the magic doubled down on what they’re good at they doubled down on their defense they said we’re going to commit and stick to a principle and an identity those are the players we’re going to add and we’ll get better offensively through internal growth the magic do have a lot left to do I I don’t think they’re Championship level team yet um they’re going to get there very quickly they’re not far off I I I really don’t think they’re far off they’re one big move away perhaps from getting there they fron becoming an All-Star Pao getting better you know Jaylen jayen Suggs continuing to find consistency that’s how close they are to being a really dangerous team you know they’re they could very easily have the kind of season the Indiana Pacers have had the manag to have to get better at beating Elite teams that’s that I think is the biggest thing Orlando Orlando feasted last year on bad teams and they got to do that again I know everyone likes to point to the Charlotte lost and the Houston lost but the magic feasted on bad teams last year they got to do that again and they got to beat good teams too um that’s going to be the challenge again that’s going to be the thing to elevate is okay like win some big games go win that game against Oklahoma City on on national TV the magic will get a few National TV games this year win those games deal with that pressure but the magic have a lot left to do let’s not make any bones about it this is not the final product and this is a team that that is going to have to face its weaknesses at some point and perhaps be willing to sacrifice a bit of their identity to get it done that wasn’t this summer for Better or For Worse that wasn’t this summer and so now the magic have to find their way forward once
