first off Klay Thompson is going to be a real floor spacer a guy that has to be respected off the ball a lot of the time he’s going to be face guarded coming off screens and things of that nature the Mavericks got to the finals with fake floor spacers Derrick Jones Jr PJ Washington before I go deep into it I just want to say I’m not taking shots at those players I just want to showcase a flaw that has been existent on the roster for a while with Luca and to be quite honest with you it’s hard to find guys with real off ball gravity like Klay Thompson that’s why this signing was so huge to me because with the Mavericks pretty much every player on the roster opposing teams were willing to let them shoot open threes or semiopen threes to take the ball out of Kyrie in Luca’s hands against OKC PJ Washington went berserk and others stepped up because of that game plan it didn’t work in that series but then in the finals everyone was cold from three and the Celtics got away with B basically knock guarding some players off the ball in my opinion the Mavericks offense was the biggest issue in that finals they got held under 100 points four out of the five games they needed to add scoring mainly off the ball scoring to improve the spacing so life is easier for Luca luckily Klay Thompson will bring just that last season he shot 9 threes a game while shooting 39% from three and despite the washed allegations even if you think he’s washed you cannot deny the fact that he’s still one of the best Shooters in the league and arguably the best catch and shoot player in the NBA only 19% of his threes were considered wide open last season meaning a Defender is 6 Plus feet away from you as you shoot the shot to put that in perspective 34% of the time in the playoffs PJ Washington’s threes were considered wide open 38% for Derrick Jones Jr as well clearly defense were game planning to live with those threes now 38% of the time Klay Thompson was taking tight shots from three meaning a Defender is within 2 to 4 feet from him when he shoots he also shot 39.5% in those situations and also the other majority of where his threes happen 38% of his threes were considered open based on what I just went over leaving Klay Thompson open is not in the scattering report for defenses and I’ll show you what I mean when I say he has real off ball gravity to the film look at the respect he’s getting on this play the defender is glued onto him literally hugging him as Steph freaking Curry is operating in the pick and roll his teammate then catches with a lot of space to take the driving lane because Clay is getting faceu guarded and notice throughout the whole possession he really hasn’t stopped moving he’s trying to get open and eventually that results in him receiving a massive screen and he fires away in 2 seconds every time he comes off a screen things like this occur he’s getting hugged by his Defender initially then as he uses the screen the defender has to fight over there is no scenario where going under is an option which opens up a bunch of opportunities if the screen is executed properly Derrik Lively and Daniel Gafford are going to be setting him screens off the ball very consistently look at Looney level Fred Van Fleet on this play now the defense is compromised and Klay Thompson gets a wide openen three and listen to this tweet crazy stat I found today Klay Thompson registered 4 430 offscreen plays this year Steph was second with 280 and no one else was over 200 Klay got 11.10 points per possession on those plays the Mavericks actually can run more stuff off ball have more movement without the basketball because they got Clay Thompson you have to go over every single screen he’s a part of as a defense making it easier to gain an advantage as an offense outside of Kyrie with PJ Washington you’re going under with drick Jones Jr going under with Josh screen you’re going under pretty much name anyone on the roster you’re going under not only that but he’s another other option to have a great Twan game with both Gafford and more importantly Derek Lively he’s amazing in the dribble handoff situation and many times he will draw two on the ball for a couple seconds opening up his big man for an easy two if you think about it the Mavericks didn’t have a third guy who could consistently have a two-man game with those two lob threats now they do in Clay Thompson which makes them more Dynamic and difficult to guard he’s also a threat to hit mid-range jumpers in the dribble handoff situation and off screens and things like that he shot 45% in the mid-range last season which is pretty damn good I just love the addition of Klay Thompson he makes a lot of sense for the Mavericks that’s all I got though let me know your thoughts on Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks
