Zach Edey shines in his summer league debut for the Grizzlies
[Applause] Mor with a running start elevat Point D oh my goodness TI game in overtime Gasol will turn his he is gone is on top s remain Conley now a three counting a 15o lead for Memphis and Blake Griffin gets into it on the floor with Randol hard to tell if there are any punches being thrown under there but Griffin took acceptance Adams going long Mor hit it he hit it he hit it jat Insanity you got to be kidding me welcome to grits and grinds a Memphis Grizzlies podcast Grizzlies almost win Edition the Grizzlies played a a wild Summer League game which went into an Elum ending overtime and Zack Edy looked quite good so on today’s episode we’re going to talk about Zach E’s tremendous debut and the rest of the summer league Squad but before I do just want to tell you about SeatGeek SeatGeek takes the confusion out of buying tickets with their color-coded display you’ll never doubt when you are getting a great deal and for new users you can use my promo code fast break break and get $20 off your first ticket purchase so if you need tickets to any event try SeatGeek and use my promo code fast break break for $20 off all right the first Grizzlies Summer League game is in the books and on the one hand many parts of it were very entertaining we all wanted to see the debut of Zack Edy and he was good we wanted to see Jaylen Wells and cam Spencer new Grizzlies make their debut some mixed results there we wanted to see GG Jackson Jac ravia Play Scotty pipman Jr play and we got all of that the team leaned heavily on those main players on the other hand uh this was Peak summer league with the sloppiness at times like the first quarter very very crisp the Grizzlies team looked like a very cohesive unit you had the experience point guard setting up the other players Ed’s out there grabbing rebounds blocking shots setting screens Jake laravia and GG Jackson look like experienced veterans better than their competition but then a little bit downhill from there the third quarter was abysmal for Memphis as they couldn’t make any shots and then the fourth quarter despite the excitement of the very very end um was filled with fouls and free throws and turnovers for this game there were a total of 68 foul calls there were 42 turnovers this game took 2 and 1/2 hours to complete that’s a 40-minute Summer League game took 2 and a half hours the Elum ending overtime where they played to a Target score of seven points they the first team to score seven wins in this summer league overtime and it took over 20 minutes of real time there was one very long foul call review extending that time but it was not the smoothest basketball and then of course you look at the Grizzlies statistics from the three-point line sub 20% is a team led by GG Jackson’s nightmarish 0 for 10 three-point performance you look at the free throw line the Grizzly’s 14 of 24 from the foul line although one of those misses was intentional and it was amazing but anyways let’s talk about how the summer Grizzlies did coming up just short and let’s of course begin with Zack Edy the main draw the 7 foot4 number nine pick in the 2024 draft Ed looked really good it was a very promising debut for Zack Edy in his first stint in the first quarter you saw him getting screen assists he blocked two shots in that first quarter he finished the first quarter two points six rebounds two blocks one assist just perfect later in the game we finally got some post touches you saw him when he got deep in the post make a lefty hook over Walker Kessler you saw him later do a righty hook over Walker Kessler he basically I think delivered everything you wanted now he did in fact miss a relatively easy I say relatively easy seemed easy for him put back dunk that would have put the Grizzlies ahead in the final seconds but he redeemed himself with an unbelievable offensive rebound tip that was a essentially at the buzzer that sent it to overtime Jake laravia missed that free throw on purpose Ed tips it in sends the game to overtime I do think it’s a interesting strategy question like for the Jazz like a lot of times all right if you’re up three foul so the team that’s trailing has to hit a free throw then miss a free throw on purpose get the rebound and score that’s relatively unlikely but also it was a scramble situation Jak L ravier was going to have to take very long deep three-pointer On The Run meanwhile we have a 7 fo4 Center so like maybe our odds of getting an offensive rebound are higher but still it was an unlikely ending to regulation and you give credit to Jake laravia for like a perfect intentional free throw Miss but Zach EDI tips it in we go to overtime in overtime playing to seven Target score was 97 the Jazz score the the first three the Grizzlies then score the next five again it takes them 10 12 minutes to do so um and they have multiple chances to win G Jackson turns the ball over several times with the opportunity to win he uh misses some threes again and then finally the Jazz pull out the victory on a Highly Questionable foul call um the Grizzlies were out of timeouts they could not challenge the foul call it clearly looked like Keon George first of all lost the ball before there was any possible contact but then even after he lost the ball I think Edy knocks the ball away with his left hand there’s no foul there but the game was decided you could say decided the game ended on what looked to be a missed call and The Grizzlies come up just short but you know what again we don’t care kzaz Zaki had 14 points 15 rebounds and four blocks and I think most partisan Grizzlies fans watching the game especially at the end of the fourth quarter and an overtime we’re just screaming give Zack the ball throw the ball to the big guy if there was any disappointment for this game uh I mean yes GG Jackson gross um Jaylen Wells very underwhelming debut but if there is any disappointment it’s just we didn’t get to see even more of Zach Edy I want to see Edy with the ball in his hands I wanted to see his decision- making more we didn’t get to see very much of the playmaking in the first quarter I think one of Jake laria’s first threes it was off an assist from Edie where they threw it into the post he kicked it right back out to the open guy I want to see more of that I wanted to see Edie with the ball in his hands at the elbow to see what kind of decision- making he would have what kind of playmaking he would have but also when he got in the paint give him the ball he’s going to score and there were many times where he would give the ball up I think you could tell they they called a play like we’re going to give Edy the ball out on the Block and then he’s going to give it back up and then once that happened it seemed like the guards in the things were like all right we threw it into Ed like we’re supposed to now I have it back now I’m going to go do my thing and most of the time Edie after he passed it would seal his guy under the basket and those are the plays where he just got to give it right back to him um but maybe that’s something they will work on in upcoming summer games now other possible concerns for Zach’s debut uh he turned his ankle not that we’re really worried about the severity of that injury I mean I do think that means he’s not going to play he’s definitely not playing tonight by the way um I’m just that’s a guess but the Grizzlies play the Thunder um less than 24 hours after the game it’s like 20 hours after the that overtime ended um I don’t expect Zaki to play also um Jason March said after the game they’re going to play some different guys you know some guys who didn’t play on Monday will get a chance on Tuesday I’m assuming that means the guys who all played like over 30 minutes who are the regular rotation guys Scotty pipman Jr Jake laravia GG Jackson Zack Edy my anticipation my guess would be those guys do not play on Tuesday night but anyways um Edie twisted his ankle a little bit but also the man fell down so hard what three separate times each time I was so nervous people on social media were telling me Oh yeah he falls down a lot that’s the thing he did at Purdue but he’s very sturdy he’s tough he’ll play through it I don’t like the idea of my giant big man hitting the ground that hard multiple times every game but I guess maybe that is something I will get used to um one thing I will say before we talk about any of the other players like to kind of maybe couch the performance of Zach to slow down the victory Laps on uh the Zach Defenders or the Zaki enthusiasts like yeah he looks really really good um yes it’s easy to see or easy to imagine how that game is going to translate when he’s playing with even better guards when he’s setting screens like his screens were so huge they were awesome uh when he’s setting those screens for johnar and Desmond Bane it’s going to be a thing of beauty um but also I would say his game I think he was expected to have a really strong summer league he is 22 two time college player of the year and absolutely physically dominant it was an expectation that he was going to rack up you know some some good stats have uh some good moments I think the extremely encouraging thing and I was I mean again 100% excited by the debut of Edy I thought he looked great I think you should be encouraged but the grain of salt should be uh he is more seasoned and bigger than most of his opponents but even pushing back against that I think something you can be extremely excited about if you’re a Grizzlies fan if you’re a Ed believer is the fact that you know most teams is going to play in Summer League aren’t going to have the big bodies to guard him but the Jazz did have big bodies to guard him Ed having 14 points 15 rebounds and four blocks I find exceptionally encouraging because he did it against Walker Kessler Walker Kesler I mean he’s also 22 years old he’s he’s about he’s about 11 months older than zachi but Kesler is going into his third NBA season he’s a seven-footer he has NBA experience that was a good challenge for Edie yeah Kesler blocked several of Ed’s shots but also I think Edie outperformed Kesler Zack Edy looked to be the better player just in that one game perhaps Ed’s teammates were lifting him up a little bit better because maybe the Grizzlies players as a whole looked better than some of the jazz players I mean keontay George had a massive game but also it took a lot of free throws to get there he was five out of 21 from the field uh he also was 17 out of 19 from the foul line but like a lot of the other jazz players did not do much Cody Williams not very much I think Isaiah clier had a very good debut game uh Taylor Hendricks didn’t do very much so Kessler did not get a lot of help but I think straight up if you look at that matchup Edie or Kesler you’re excited Zack Ed got the upper hand and had a very nice debut now Gigi Jackson all right Gigi and both had very good first quarters I think in the first half Jake laravia maybe the best player on the court despite uh Kat George having 20 points in the first half Jake L did a lot of great stuff but GG Jackson he opens the game set play gets an alley dunk finish then he he has some nice scoring plays where he’s he’s getting in the paint but his shooting Gigi you got to make some shots he goes 0 for 10 from three finishes six for 20 overall also very discouragingly was four out of eight from the free throw line I mean the Grizzlies again 14 for 24 but one was on purpose on the misses but like only three guys shot free throws for the Grizzlies Zack no free throw attempts that doesn’t seem right but anyways uh Scotty Pippen Jr Jake laravia GG Jackson the only Grizzly players to shoot free throws and every one of them missed a ton um Gigi four out of eight Scotty Pippa Jr who otherwise was really really good was four out of seven from the foul line but I think we’re watching GG Jackson in summer league and we’re paying special attention to his playmaking and decision making and also probably his shooting we want to know how much of the shooting is is for real and like there’s going to be variation like we’re not going to get too high or low on G Going 0 for 10 from three also we’re not going to get too high or low unlike Jaylen Wells missing all his shots or Cam Spencer hitting a bunch of shots but like we want to see Gigi’s playmaking and his decision making and it was very poor the tie turn for me on Gigi in this game it was midway through the second maybe later in the second quarter where he was sort of posting up from like 20 ft and Jaylen Wells was standing there with his hands ready to catch a pass top of the key and that’s his job Jaylen wells’s job as a floor spacer and he was standing there top of the key wide open GJ Jackson was double teamed and he ends up shooting a weird 21 foot fallway while he’s double teamed while Jaylen Wells is wide open like that I was like Gigi you’re you’re here to work on the decision- making there was transition opportunity where Jaylen Wells again very wide open GG Jackson just doesn’t see him dribbles into like a triple team in the lane nothing comes of it by the way speaking of transition shout out Zack Edy running the court getting a couple of transition buckets uh the Jazz not doing the best job of losing the giant 7 foot5 300lb guy uh changing end of the court but Edie getting a uh I would call it two of his dunks were in in in transition opportunities but ji Jackson’s decision-making I thought was pretty poor for this game and then the shooting was bad and then especially in clutch opportunities the turnovers added up for GG the Miss shots added up he really I mean frankly shot him out of this game maybe you could blame also jayen Wells so Jaylen Wells got the start I guess I could tell you who started the game I’m guessing you watched it but maybe not um as expected the starters were Scotti Pippen Jr then Jaylen Wells who you know signed his contract a couple days ago his guaranteed contract um and then GG Jackson sh laravia and Zack Edy and again they played those guys heavy minutes Ed played 34 minutes um and I think that includes the overtime technically overtime was untimed as they played to that Target score but the numbers look like it’s including more than the minutes that would normally be occurring in a 40-minute basketball game so you had eded playing 34 minutes Pippen played 34 minutes aravia played nearly 36 minutes Gigi played 33 minutes so they they again they heavily played the starters but uh Jaylen Wells you know we’re excited to see what this guy’s going to bring I think if you’re thinking about what are we watching for or what are we looking for for Jaylen Wells I think you wonder how well is he going to fit in an NBA atmosphere does he look like he belongs athletically and I think the jury is still out on that I mean he made his first shot made a nice little floater but then he missed several other two-point attempts The Scouting Blur by memorized about him was uh no two-pointers whatsoever did not finish in the paint can’t really finish off the dribble and we saw that he had a couple of awkward attempts in the lane he had a fast break opportunity where he got his shot blocked where he was going in for a layup so I think the athleticism is a question after that first game and you know we’re not going to get too carried away with him missing all of his three-pointers but it is slightly concerning his three-pointers were not close I mean Jaylen and Gigi they missed 14 three-pointers and a large number of them did not hit the rim it was gross watching those guys uh put up those shots now cam Spencer the other second round pick cam Spencer by the way signed his two-way deal on Monday so now cam joins Trey Jimson and Scotty pppa Jr on two-way deals for the Grizzlies uh I never saw any official support but so long Jordan Goodwin it was good knowing you um cam Spencer a great shooting debut from the 24-year-old rookie from Yukon he was five out of seven on deep jumpers that’s right I’m calling them deep jumpers because two of them were long two-pointers with his toe on the line he was three for five on three-pointers I believe he was two for two on two-pointers where his toes were on the line so a really strong shooting debut for cam Spencer probably the pendum is going to swing in other games where Jaylen Wells is the one making the shots but um C made threes in his first game hopefully he continues that if you want to remember like jakc Le Ria’s first Summer League game he made a ton of Threes And then he missed basically all the rest of his shots all summer league also if you remember the Grizzlies last year I think I’m remembering this right the Le’s first Summer League game as a team last year they drilled so many three-pointers and then for the rest of Summer League the shooting completely abandoned them I mean maybe that was a precursor to the regular season last year where the team Couldn’t Shoot but uh probably not all that to say don’t get carried away with the shooting performances one way or the other um let’s talk now about J laravia and the rest of the guys who played and we’ll do that right after this short break [Applause] [Music] all right Jake laravia who of course finished the regular season on a scoring binge he looked like one of the better players out there and I think that’s very encouraging from Jake yes he’s played 70 career NBA games but he does have some NBA experience going into his third season so you hope those third-year guys they look clearly like they belong and also so like they can control the game and like they are some of the best guys on the court and I felt like that was the situation for Jay clavia his shooting was not ideal he missed all of his three-point attempts after the first quarter so he finishes two out of eight from deep but his overall statline 18 points seven rebounds three assists and three steals I think that reflects accurately how impactful he was on the game his defense was really really good he forced two turnovers just by pick his man up full court you hardly ever see that in the NBA in professional basketball normally ball handling is so good and I think also the Jazz summer leue team a bit discombobulated at times just getting the ball at the court there was a couple of turnovers like GG Jackson had a huge dunk where the Jazz saved the ball under their goal and they know their jazz players paying attention to what was going on but Jake’s defense guarding smaller players guarding guards harassing them while they dribbled forcing eight second violations was extremely impressive and we saw I think we saw Jake guard basically every position of this game he was guarding big players he was guarding uh the point guards he was guarding Isaiah CER he was guarding kante Georgia time so like Jake Arabia I was very impressed with his game hopefully he continues that positive momentum in the rest of his Summer League games um as far as the other players who played I’ve already talked about Jake and Gigi and Zack and Jaylen oh Scotty Pippen Jr let’s focus a little bit more on him I hope I prepared you adequately in previous episodes for how good Scotti Pippen Jr is going to look in summer league and I feel like we saw that Scotty Pippen Jr led the team with 21 points he had five assists three turnovers again uh some of the turnovers I I think they were all near the end of the game in the fourth quarter nba.com box score isn’t giving me a game book or it isn’t allowing me to look at it you know quarter by quarter see the stats like I’m like I normally would be able to so I’m I’m going off of memory but I feel like Pippen turned the ball over at least a couple of times in the fourth quarter um so I hoped for a little bit more Poise from him also the four out of seven from the foul line you need better from your point guard but that’s just nitpicking Pippen defense was really good I mean the Grizzlies team defense was generally I think very very solid they had 28 points off of turnovers they ated 12 steals six blocks of course four of them from Edy uh cavon Harris and Trey Jimson each got one block a piece but the defense was really really good and a lot of that was the on ball defense by Scotty Pippen Jr I mean he threw charges multiple charges were drawn if I remember correctly um good defense by Pippen a very strong Summer League game from Scotty Pippen Jr uh cavon Harris he came off the bench made his first three he finished with three points three boards three assists I feel like he was just trying to fit in he maybe was given some ball handling duties and he was doing his best just to kind of run to the show uh Trey Jimson only played 11 minutes as again they played 80 heavy minutes I mean how many times did Stephen Adams play 34 minutes on the Grizzlies uh in a game Edy got 34 minutes in his Grizzlies debut uh Jimson had four points finished both of his buckets inside the paint um got one rebound Dicky jaru three out of three on two-pointers 0 for two on three-pointers uh got two assists as well and then Isaiah Miller Isaiah Miller missed all of his shots um but picked up two steals quite quickly upon checking into the game he only played eight minutes I was looking at Isaiah Miller’s g-league stats so the guy has played a ton of g-league games over the past three seasons and just looking at the statistics like I haven’t watched this guy but looking at the statistics very strong steel numbers so we saw that reflected in his play in his 8 Minute stint he has very strong steel numbers from three years in the G league and just awful three-point shooting numbers the guy is sub 30% on pretty low volume in we’re talking hundreds or over a hundred g-league games over the last three seasons so I guess the book on Isaiah Miller is decent Defender can’t shoot and unfortunately that was reflected in his 0 for four stat line I mean the grizzly stats again 19% 7even for 36 on threes 58% from the line and then 20 turnovers and 38 team fouls that is horrific I believe in the third quarter that they made two field goal attempts again I can’t look that up any way that I know it’s very easy I guess I could I could go through the play-by-play and count I’m not going to um but anyways and I think that is all or that’s enough to talk about from this this first game again zachi as promised very exciting very great debut game for him overall the Grizzlies team when they play these guys they’re going to win most of their summer league games it would be very surprising if they lose many more games I mean the Jazz had a good roster I don’t think they played that well together they leaned mainly on K Keon George but the Jazz had a lot of NBA pedigree up and down that roster and The Grizzlies of course did too and they uh they played a very I think a tough opponent um very very close despite those really awful statistics now as far as other things to go over to wrap up the episode I feel now that we had some time to breathe from the breaking news of the Grizzlies coaching staff uh that press release of course came out while I was recording uh my last episode um Jason March one thing I did not say in previous episodes Jason March turns out you know he obviously was the summer leue coach for the Grizzlies the previous report that announced the tumas iso hiring said beyond being the lead assistant that he was going to coach the grizzly summer league team that is not the case turns out uh Jason March obviously coached the game Jason March has coached the hustle for the past few seasons but it seems like the report that um Isela is the lead assistant that that is accurate Drew Hill at the daily memphian echoed that in his reporting so that’s something I felt like I needed to clarify um from last episode and then considering the Grizzly’s roster as it stands the Grizzly’s actual roster not their summer league roster they’re still at 14 players will they stay at 14 players and just leave a roster spot open and not bring back Luke Canard and stay right now comfortably below the luxury tax line it feels like that’s a possibility right now basically signing even a guy to a minimum gets them really close to the luxury tax and so maybe they’re not going to do it it’s an interesting decision uh but right now we’re still waiting kind of wondering what’s going on in previous years the gries have never had roster spots I mean it has been the habit of the team I think almost every year for the at least the last four or five 5 years to have more than 15 guaranteed contracts on the books in the summer right now they only have 14 and I guess I should mention uh as a completionist thing that Daniel Ty is no longer available the Pelicans signed Daniel TI to a minimum contract to fill some of their Center needs I thought he would be a good depth option for the Grizzlies if they were interested I have no idea if the Grizzlies actually were interested I mean maybe the Pelicans just had more playing time to offer him who knows but anyways um One Summer League game is in the books the game tonight is at 6 I believe it’s at 600 PM Central against the Thunder I would say again my expectation my guess is uh Edie and Pippen and laravia and GG Jackson don’t play hopefully cam Spencer and Jaylen Wells get to play so we have something to watch for otherwise it might be the dicki jeru show but anyways thanks you guys for listening thanks for you watching on YouTube a huge thank you to William Irvine for joining my patreon he’s the newest person to sign up over there if you Zach looked great
I love that so far Edey skeptics are looking kinda dumb. He ate Kesslers lunch.
He did it against Kessler which is a true test.
You could see the team running some of the new French coach's offense! I like it!
Edney did his job.
Jake was bla,
GG was awful 5-20 and 2 of them were dunks
Grizz front office should’ve encouraged eddy to play with team Canada..I could tell during talks Gm interview they was gonna steer him away from playing with team Canada
Props to Edey, he played extremely well. Looked better than I thought he would. May end up being a great pick at 9.
As far as LaRavia now being a great player and GG being awful, I will caution the critics: this is 1 summer league game. We've seen GG play better than anyone on the Grizz's SL roster when it matters in the regular season, as an 18/19 yr old. Pump the breaks, people.
Happy for that kid
Pippen is a nice scorer & a real pest on D, but he's just NOT a PG. He was always looking at the rim, not drop it off to Zach. I suspect he has already been corrected in that regard. And GG will be reacquainted with the concept of a good shot.
NO9 pick, edey, see how stupid nba sys and management is
as purdue studt and fan, have to say most nba coach are idiots, like this game, just pass the ball to edey, so easy, but people refused, lost the opportunity edey earned
