Jim Petersen – Can’t Say Enough Good Things About Kyle Anderson
Jim Pete doesn’t make me nervous I love me some Jim Peterson especially on the Wolves calls color analysts on television for B Sports up there in Minnesota of course he’s a former Warrior we love him when he comes back out here we always get him on the radio we get him on TV we love us some Jim Pete what’s up Jim vonte what’s going on man how’s Joe doing doing good on this fourth of well almost Fourth of July it’s yeah I mean it doesn’t feel it feels like feels like Christmas with all the NBA all season of course Jim Peterson joins us on the river isy guest line man there’s a lot going on here obviously war and I know you can’t dive deep into it because it’s not official yet but Kyle Anderson apparently in the sign a trade with the go to State Warriors is coming out here to the Bay Area known as slow-mo and he’s one of those long linky defenders in Minnesota tell us a little bit about slow-mo here because a lot of fans are excited about Kyle Anderson well you should be excited he’s he’s one of my all-time favorite Timber rules players I mean Bonte you know I’ve been a a broadcas here in Minnesota for I’ve been with the worlds for 26 years so I’ve seen a lot of guys come and go Y and and Kyle like I I admired Kyle when he was in high school um you know in Jersey right exactly yeah so I mean you know he he just was a phenomenal high school player then going to UCLA and then when he you know played with the Spurs for those four years you know was just a a Class Act and I admired him from afar you know his game the versatility that he had the ability to handle the basketball initiate offense how big he was um you know we played them in the playoffs when he played for Memphis in 2122 and they they beat us that that round but you know Kyle uh in those four years at Memphis was always the thorn in our side he always made plays you know he wasn’t always a big scorer in fact he only averaged double figures in one season um you know through his what ninth season in the NBA so heage 12.4 that year in Memphis but um you know the two years he spent in Minnesota uh you know he saved our season last year not past season but last season when we had the injury to Carl Anthony towns you know Kyle was able to step in and the way that he was able to unlock Rudy Gober because you know when you remember when Rudy first came to Minnesota it wasn’t great it didn’t work out great and and Kyle was the first one to kind of unlock Rudy kind of save our career and get us to the playoffs that year so um you know I I just can’t say enough good things his family’s amazing um he’s got this really really beautiful family his wife and his son um they had a kind of A Love Affair here in Minnesota with the community but I just know that playing for that organization playing for the Golden State Warriors playing for Steve Kerr playing with Steph you know the the kind of uh player that he is he’s going to fit right in well where does he fit in in terms of the position on both ends of the floor alongside Steph Curry Draymond Green it’s a very unique team with a very unique offense so how does he fit in well you know I mean he he’ll be excellent in Split actions you know you know as the post player as the screener whatever you need him to do he can initiate offense he can be a small ball five um he would be excellent at small ball five and you know if you wanted to play Draymond at the green at the four you know so um he could he could be he could be your four against a you with a traditional more traditional Center but the versatility that he has he’s a matchup problem because he can he can he can handle the basketball and and you know he can initiate but the one thing that that he’s sort of suffered an eye injury in the playoffs against Denver two years ago um and so that eye injury was was way more catastrophic to his you know next season this past season than we kind of thought he was having some vision problems and and Kyle never used it as an excuse he never used it as an excuse but he was having more issues I think with with his with his eyesight and it impacted his shooting you know he uh he it’s at points last season I mean he still shot the basketball 46% from the field but you know it it impacted his three-point shooting and and he wasn’t able to to you know sight line the basketball he shot 23% from the three last year after shooting 41 the year before so that eye injury impacted him but you know I think he’s come through the other side what golden state is getting just a Pros Pro High basketball IQ you excellent Defender he’s one of those guys that that has just defensive versatility and so you you talk about Rim protection versus defensive versatility or being able to switch on the perimeter if you’re asking me what I’d rather have as much as I’d love Rudy Gober and the rim protection I love defensive versatility that that Draymond Green has been able to show and being able to switch and cover on the perimeter that’s what Kyle can do and just he can quarterback your offense and your defense I I just I just can’t say enough about how this guy is talking to Jim Peterson longtime color analyst with the Minnesota timber wolves 26 years up there in Minnesota for Valley Sports joining us on the River Islands guest line all guest on 957 game appear on the River Islands guest line isn’t it time for you to discover the islands River Islands and LR here so slowmo and I remember the first time I saw Kyle Anderson Jim was at the Pack 12 champ Pack 12 tournament they ended up winning a tournament against Arizona in Arizona had Aaron Gordon and I believe the kid’s name was Nick Johnson but it was slowmo LaVine Jordan Adams and I was like wow this guy is so but he took over the entire tournament I think he won tournament in MVP as they won that tournament did you ever ask him or why does he play so slow and why how is he able to get away at playing at such a slow pace you know uh you know he actually got that name back when he was playing aou some parent um they were they were at some tournament and some parent you know uh said man you’re slow man he started calling him slow-mo like another parent from another called him that and it just stuck and you know it he just plays at his own pace and you know I just I just really I really um it’s not a detriment whatsoever and he he Embraces the slow-mo name he calls himself slow-mo does he but the the way that um you know you know Bob Hurley senior when he was at St Anthony High School in New Jersey like brought him up like he he was tough on him and then also um you know his his dad um is also Kyle as well so he’s you know Kyle’s a I I don’t know that if Kyle’s a junior but um but Kyle’s dad um I you know had many conversations with him and and Kyle’s father used to talk about how tough he was on him um as a kid growing up too and and expected Excellence from him so even though he had you know you know limited speed he he does not have limited agility and there’s a difference so yeah he’s not fast but he can be quick and the other thing that he always does defensively too is that because he’s so smart and anticipates he’s getting to spots anticipating getting there early and so that’s why he’s so effective is that he may not have the speed but he has the anticipation which makes him dangerous do the players around the league the ones that you talk to do they still have that fear is there still a Mystique that the Warriors used to possess is it still there for this current Warrior team or is that kind of fading away well I mean I mean look I mean like the the Warriors that played at Oracle I mean and that and that to me is my favorite iteration um because I love that building I played in that building um I loved Oracle Arena I loved playing in that city um the chase Center is is is not the same Vibe um and it’s not the same team uh Chase Center’s beautiful Arena it’s one of the best in the NBA right now in fact I mean it’s got to be top five in terms of the setting being on the water it just hasn’t been able to get the Mystique that that the Coliseum did or or oracal Arina did you know because that’s where Rick Barry played that’s where L adles coached and um you know that’s the place that Chris Mullen Tim Hardway Mitch Richmond played and then you know the way that um you know Clay and Steph and then when KD came too I mean that that that Oracle Arena was and I always told people like I know I played there and I’m I’m kind of partial to the Golden State Warriors um you know whole vibe but I said I told people around the country if you never got to Oracle during that that ER you really miss something uh you you miss seeing W Gretzky play you miss seeing Mario Lemieux play you miss seeing Montana play that’s that’s another thing too Candlestick Park when I when I was playing with mlly and and Tolbert and and Tim Hardaway and Mitch Richmond we used to go to the can go to can park and watch the 49ers play that place um Levi state isn’t the same you know Candlestick was you’re right and Levi Stadium is great don’t get me wrong it’s a phenomenal facility but there’s just something about about those about those old Arenas and and and the the history that they held um so the answer your question is no that’s the easy that’s the easy question because it’s not the same team I mean Clay’s gone now yeah um you know Ste Steph is in his 30s draymond’s draymond’s graying you know so the it’s still a a a very um viable team it as long as you have Steph Curry on your team and Draymond Green you’re going to be a you know a dangered win uh but um yeah it’s it’s time to kind of like start start adding more pieces to the puzzle and I think slowmo is going to be a good addition real quick before we let you go Jim and we do appreciate the time man uh I do want to talk to you we’ll talk about this all the next season that team is they look dangerous and they’re going to be here for a while what a run for you guys uh this past season but you brought up Klay Thompson the fit in Dallas because you cover the league you know the league inside and out your your basketball knowledge is is up there with the best of them um Klay Thompson what did you see from him last season and what could he add to the Dallas Mavericks in your opinion I saw frustration from clay I I saw a guy that is that sustained a couple of really serious injury the ACL injury is one that I’ll always just it was it was a crushing blow to me because his dad was my hero Bon growing up I don’t know if you knew that but I didn’t but but but I wore number 43 in the NBA because of Michael Thompson I knew Michael I knew Michael Thompson because you know he he was the number one overall pick in 1978 out of the University of Minnesota and I knew Michael Thompson when I was a seventh grader and he C he came to my basketball camp when I was in in uh seventh grade eighth grade he came two years in a row and and uh I just got to be really good friends with him so he’s like my hero and so Klay Thompson is you know by definition I I just and I’m really close to to Michael Michael Thompson’s brother uh Clay’s Uncle Andy Thompson who by the way Andy Thompson is very interesting this is just a side note I don’t know if you guys knew this but you know uh the Last Dance video that came out that that whole series that came out on Netflix um that was Andy Thompson’s project Andy Thompson was the one who you know was was embedded with the with the bulls back in the day and so that Thompson family is very close don’t they have another brother not to cut you off M isn’t there another like relative who like takes photos and videos for the NBA as well is that Andy or am I think about somebody else Andy that’s that’s Andy that’s Andy yeah okay so Andy Andy’s been with the with the with NBA entertainment for 30 years I mean he’s he’s a giant in that industry and and it and so he did the last dance but with Clay though you know I I just you know those two injuries that he stain an ACL in the killes tear um you know Michael sent me the video I don’t if you ever saw the video of clay tearing as the kiles how how simple it was how a ridiculously uh simple play he just like shot a corner three and just crowded back on on offense and and when he planted his foot he s half his Achilles I just felt so bad for him um and so he credit to him for coming back and being able to be able to play again but the frustration that he that he was kind of feeling last year you you could sense it you guys could all see it yeah um and so you know I think this is gonna you know double his efforts he’s going to go to Dallas he’s gonna you know work on his game again and I think he’s gonna you know have a phenomenal season in in Dallas you know this is what happens to guys you know they move on and and they get another another opportunity as much as people want to see Kay and Steph finish their careers in Golden State uh sometimes it doesn’t always work out that way no doubt about it Jim man good stuff as always man we love having you on these Airways have a great holiday weekend hopefully you and the family are well we can’t see can’t wait to see you when you come back to the Bay Area next season okay Bon and Joe see y see you guys see you buddy see you later Jim Jim Peterson man he’s he’s always fun man great guy uh T WS color analyst but

One of my favorite twolves. We’ ll miss him
If Jim Peterson is right, then it boggles the mind even more why Connelly gave up so much for Rudy…. Pete saying that he would rather have Kyle Anderson….oh my…
