Walker Kessler is the best trade target for the New Orleans Pelicans to get a starting center

if he’s actually that cheap to trade for then the Pelicans absolutely need to make Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz their new starting center like tomorrow I’ll tell you how they can pull it off in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans let’s go you are locked on Pelicans your daily New Orleans Pelicans podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome to another edition of locked on Pelicans the daily podcast covering your favorite team the New Orleans Pelicans at NBA part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day available wherever you get your podcast and available on YouTube I’m your host Pelicans Insider credential member of the media Jake Madison Nola Jake on Twitter here with y’all on this Thursday and we’ll get into summer league stuff tomorrow but I want to focus on the center position because we’re hearing some rumors about Walker Kesler and that’s who should be starting for the Pelicans as their roster is constructed right now and that includes Brandon Ingram on the team it might even include Brandon Ingram off the team I’ll break down why Walker Kessler is the best fit what he would bring to the team and what the trade would need to look like then we’re going to go into the luxury tax because look the Pelicans have to pay it this season and then we’ll look at a couple of other options for the center spot because they need to upgrade that area and that is the biggest weakness they have right now that’s all in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans is brought to you by Game every day we’re here Monday through Friday the number one Pelicans podcast covering everything you want to know about this Pelicans team so please subscribe wherever you get your podcast join over 10,000 Pelicans fans on YouTube as well so let’s get into this one Walker Kessler this is a name that has been brought up a lot in the past couple of weeks as the pel look for a starting center and there’s a number of reasons why one this dude has incredible size for the center position he is 7′ one 245 lbs with a over 7 fo4 Wings Spin and he’s one of the better shot blockers in the league this is someone who averaged 2.4 blocks per game last season that was second in the leag when you get down into some of the advanced stat looking at block percentage and this is the percentage of shots blocked when he was on the floor and it’s just two-point field goal attempts it was 9.2 like that is really good he’s blocking almost 10% of shot attempts when he’s out there on the court that is an incredibly strong number he’s also a very good rebounder ranks in the top 15 in terms of offensive boards he’s a very good defensive rebounder too not an elite level but like a step or two slight step or two below that this guy makes a ton of sense and he’s young right he’s young this is someone who’s just 22 years old he’ll be 23 next season and he doesn’t make a ton of money on a rookie deal right now basically making $3 million next season we’ll go into the money stuff in a second here so there’s reasons to like Walker Kessler now there’s reasons to not love him I am somewhat skeptical about his ability to be a full-time starter in the NBA his numbers slightly regressed in terms of offense for the Utah Jazz last season he wasn’t as good as he was his rookie year last year was his second year in the league the per 36 numbers bear that out so if you can’t gave him equal opportunity he was just worse why that doesn’t worry me a ton is because the Pelicans don’t need him to be elite at anything particularly offensively just grab some boards and block some shots right like that’s what you want he’s not the most mobile so he can’t fully defend on the perimeter like you’d like him to but if you need just an option and the Pelicans need a better option than Daniel Ty or Eve Mei right now Walker Kessler is probably the best available Center and it sounds like he can be had for not nearly as much as you might think you know there have been reports out there that it might just take a first round pick I texted someone with the Utah Jaz kind of curious saying what a pick get it done and the answer was maybe maybe you need to include something else you know there’s been a report from IM Begley that the Utah Jazz turned down two first round picks from the New York Knicks but not all first round picks are equal you know picks from the Knicks when you’re making them better aren’t that valuable and if there’s protections on them that changes things too they’re expected to be one of the better teams in the East one of the top three teams alongside the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers so maybe other picks a pelican pick or future picks from elsewhere are intriguing to them and that would they would be open to that sort of thing and notice I’m saying picks because I would not do this deal if I’m including a player in there I think you can still figure out the center position through a brand Ingram trade and more on that in a second as it stands right now the Pelicans are essentially $900,000 below the luxury tax if you were to trade Away Jordan Hawkins or Jeremiah Robinson Earl and bring in Walker Kessler in that deal you could stay under the luxury tax I don’t want to do that I don’t want to do that at all I say do this and absorb Walker Kessler into one of the two traded player exceptions that you have and if you’re unsure of what that is we talked about this earlier in the week explaining how they work essentially because num salary needs to be equal when you’re an overthe cap team as the Pelicans are in trades or about equal a traded player exception does that you can trade a first round pick and no other salary and absorb Walker Kessler’s $3 million into the Kyo Lewis Junior traded player exception that’s 5.7 million now you can’t combine traded player exceptions and anything else you can’t you know use say Jordan Hawkins and the traded player exception to go get someone that makes more money or that’ be around like 10 million or so but you can just absorb a guy into it there’s no reason to send out a player right now with the Pelicans of pushing the luxury tax and it makes sense that if they’re going to kind of fill out the roster they’re going to go into it but the other thing is they’re hard capped at the first apron they’re about $6.8 million away from that they cannot go over that 6.8 million essentially bring in Walker Kessler and that fills out your roster at this point the Pelicans have 13 people they have two open spots you need to have 14 going into the regular season if you trade a player for Walker Kessler you still need to backfill that position here if you just absorb him into the traded player exception your roster set you don’t need to go and sign anyone else this keeps you from reaching that first apron hard cap number it even gives you a little bit of flexibility to potentially make moves at the trade deadline or during the regular season so at this point in my opinion if it’s that easy to go get Walker Kessler a first round pick maybe two protected first round pick something like that I would go and make that happen because when we get into some of the other options that we’re going to talk talk about the best one is Walker Kessler like it is really as simple as that at this point in time and if it’s that easy to acquire him like go and do it and pay the luxury tax now the other well we’ll get into this what happens if you then trade Brandon Ingram for another Center I’m not concerned about that and I’ll explain why even if you trade for Walker Kessler tomorrow that’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans today’s he’ll be there in Irvine for Saints training camp so make sure you subscribe to locked on Saints make sure they’re your second listen Today part of the lockdown podcast Network your team every day and becoming every day or to lock on Pelicans that means you listen Monday through Friday we’re covering everything you want the dejonte Murray trade looking at Center options did a great job I thought with the draft we’ll have a lot on summer league and tomorrow show if you want to know about the other guys on the roster anyone have a chance of making the team we’ll break it out that all down y’all have asked about Carlo movich we’ll talk more about him in tomorrow’s episode of Locked on pelicans and maybe he could be that other big man option for New Orleans we’ll break it all down so let’s keep talking a little bit longer about Walker Kessler here and one of the things that I think could maybe scare the team off but it shouldn’t is the fact that okay say you give up a first round pick for him now just say that’s what it takes an unprotected future first round pick which I would do for him in a second just to fill out this roster pay the luxury text which we’ll get into here and get Walker Kessler what if you then trade brandan Ingram later down the line for Jared Allen Carris Levert from the um Cleveland Cavaliers Jared Allen is an upgrade over Walker Kessler without a doubt better just overall complete Center okay I my answer to that is like so what like cool good job you get Trey Murphy or herb in the starting lineup now and you got a better Center this is a win-win here right you’re happy about that sort of thing unless you’re a big Brandon Ingram fan and I’m not then worried about Walker Kessler being redundant on the team he can just go to the bench and come off and give you Rim protection and it allows you not to put too much pressure on Eve Mei who I think is going to have you know at times a rough rookie year given that he’s only played competitive basketball for like four years it he’s a project it’s going to take some time and I think that’s okay but now all of a sudden your Center rotation looks like it’s Jared Allen and Walker Kessler this is how you Vault the Pelicans up a notch get Walker Kessler bring him off the bench if it’s a first round panin he can spot start for you until you figure everything else out that sounds great to me you know you can wave someone like Jeremiah Robinson or later you can cut other players it’ll be totally fine like you can do things like that if you need to because this season I I want the Pelicans to pay the luxur tax I think they’re close enough I think if they truly want to fill out the roster this is the way to do it now if you were to trade brandan Ingram tomorrow for Carris Levert and Jared alen you could probably avoid the luxury tanks but why not still keep trying to upgrade because this is the best opportunity they’re going to have and I I don’t want to come on here and just be like the team is cheap they have acted cheap at times certainly you know they they’re one of two franchises to never pay the luxury tax but the way I view it is they haven’t really had a team that’s worth paying the luxury tax for or been in position to add to the team and pay the luxury tax right when they had Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins before Boogie went down there weren’t really options for them to pay the luxury tax to even get that close with the way their salary was structured so so yeah they’ve never paid it but I also don’t really fault them for that because there was never a reason to do it this year there’s a big reason to do it there’s a big reason to do it if you are you know not just paying bloated salaries but making your team better and this is what I’ve said right like I want them to pay the luxury tax I expect them to pay the luxury tax this year unless they make some sort of move where I look at the roster and go okay you don’t need to but that’s not where they are right now you need a starting center you’re less than a million dollars away from the luxury tax you know I presume there will be a brand Ingram trade but get better and be competitive now it’s not my money it’s easy to say but at this point the reasons to go for it are kind of up there right like you look at the the Western Conference who’s the favorite like who is the The Runaway favorite in the western conference right now is there one you know the Denver Nuggets got worse the Mavs I think went on a bit of an improbable run to make it to the NBA finals and is that something they can do again next year Klay Thompson was their big addition but in his final game for the Golden State Warriors he went 0 for 10 is he the same Klay Thompson that he once was the Minnesota Timberwolves big addition was a rookie an undersized rookie in Rob Dillingham who I liked but to trade up for eight is he going to be in the rotation this season for them I’m not sure you look at other teams in the Western Conference and who got like dramatically better the Clippers who finished ahead of the Pelicans got worse this season I think kind of significantly and now there’s questions about kawh Leonard’s health for this team the Phoenix Suns are at the second apron and really just can’t do anything at all the Thunder are probably the favorite I would presume okay that’s fine the Lakers have missed on every free agent Target the Kings maybe got better with Demar D rozan but it’s Demar d rozan right the Warriors got worse the Rockets haven’t made a big move the Jazz are probably going to be tanking next year the grizzley will rebound from an awful last season now that they’ll be healthy and have John Morant okay but are they an elite team I’m not sure the Portland Trailblazers are bad that I still think the San Antonio Spurs are another bigname player maybe Brandon Ingram we’ll talk more about that probably next week away from truly being in like Elite contention with that sort of thing so if that’s the case I’m not go all in there is no just like established order in the Western Conference and you have potential to be a top four seed if you really fill out your roster and to me that screams pay the luxury tax I think they will I’ve been saying that if I’m wrong trust me we will I don’t want to say rip the team but criticize the team for not doing it if they could have been in position to do it and chose not to if they weren’t in position to do it because there’s no one to actually add that’s a different story right last year they were in the luxury tax traded away Kyra Lewis Jr to get underneath the luxury tax but to me there was no reason to keep Kyra and go into it so I don’t really have a problem with them doing that whatsoever this year if they don’t pay the luxury tax like that’s when we need to have a larger conversation I don’t think we need to have that bigger conversation until we know for certain whether they’re going to pay the luxury tax or not but they should they are $900,000 away from it it’s actually $896,000 th000 away you know if you’re you’re you’re under 7 million away from the first APR just spend this year and try and go for it and if it doesn’t work you can trade CJ next summer you know if you keep bi you can move on from him right you know with Walker Kesler say Eve Mei comes along quicker you can just let him walk it’s okay you know you don’t always love that type of situation but it’s not the end of the world with a player like that there’s ways they can save some money and some salary too so I think when you look at this team it’s you have an opportunity to go in all in for it if you get Walker Kessler then trade Brandon Ingram and think that Trey Murphy is going to be a better fit herb Jones is going to be a better fit we know what dejonte Murray is going to bring to this team because we talked about it in yesterday’s episode I think you’re in a really good position to be hyperco competitive in a wideopen western conference we thought the suns were going to run away with it last year you know they they barely avoided the playing tournament and got swept in the first round and that same team is coming back and that same team just did not work last season and they don’t have anything they can do to get better the Spurs are further away right but also in your division with Victor wanyama with Zach Edy who looks really good you need Sol defensive Center because no one else on this Falcons team is going to be able to handle that Walker Kessler and then maybe trading brain and Ingram and bringing someone else in I think those are all the moves that mean pay the luxury tax like go and make it happen if you’re a longtime listener of the show one of the things you’ve heard me say the past couple of years if there’s someone you like go and get that guy if you overpay a little bit it’s fine go and get the guy that you truly value and think is going to elevate your team and to me right now based on what we’re seeing and how the Center Market looks that’s Walker Kesler right that’s Walker Kessler so go and make it happen because we’re going to go over we’re about to get there other names for the Pelicans to look at you know in free agency or the trade market I should say that fit into either that Kyo leis Jr exception or the yonas Valen chunis exception it’s not great like it’s really not good of guys that you can go and get salary wise that fit into those positions you know that’s something that I think the Pelicans need to factor in so go and upgrade your team and be competitive next year and try and win some games if it doesn’t work out it doesn’t work out now I’m not getting fired if that’s the case but I still think at a certain point you’ve got to take some risks and go for it and the Pelicans are feeling like that’s it seems like that’s how they’re feeling and that makes me excited for moves that could potentially come so coming up next say say they Walker Kessler actually isn’t available we’ll get into why he might not be because it’s Danny AG who are some of the other names that they could get and it’s not great but there’s a few out there but there’s some concerns with all of them too so let’s break that down coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on pelicans and thank you for making lock on Pelicans your first listen today and every day we’re here Monday through Friday the number one Pelicans podcast covering everything you want to know about this Pelicans team so please subscribe wherever you lockon podcast Network your team every day so let’s keep looking at Center options for the Pelicans cuz look Daniel Tyson Eve Mei isn’t what you want to roll into the season with Ty can maybe start for you he’s done it before but I think you there are better options out there that are you know potentially available so let’s look at the Houston Rockets there’s two names that I think we can look at and there’s concerns with both of them the first one is Jabari Smith Jr you know the number three overall pick from a couple of years ago Houston has a number of guys that they’re going to need to pay is Jabari Smith Jr one of them or are they building around Jaylen green Alber shenon and some of the others on the team like all of these guys because they’ve had so many first round draft picks are up for like massive Max extensions and you can you pay all of them I’m not sure that you can does that mean maybe Jabari Smith Jr gets shipped out could he be your starting center so here’s the thing he’s played some Center minutes he’s played some Center minutes for the Houston Rockets about a third of his time is spent at Center this past season but primarily he’s a power forward yes he has good size 610 611 but I don’t know if he is like your full-time five maybe you don’t need that here in New Orleans but I do also think that someone of his kind of stature where he was drafted is going to have those kind of expectations of playing 36 plus minutes per game and can you give him that you know at the center position and I don’t think he’s done enough to really kind of prove that just yet you know one of the things that you know yeah last season was about 32 33% at Center according to cleaning the glass which I find more accurate than basketball significantly more accurate than basketball Dash reference you know I don’t know if that’s great you know they were better with him at Center than they were at power forward but the Houston Rockets at times were a bit of a mess last season so I don’t know how to make sense of some of that to be perfectly honest with you when you look at what he brings to the team like he’s not a rim protector at all he’s a good rebounder I agree you know at least in terms of defensive boards but he doesn’t go after the offensive boards whatsoever you know at times he needs a higher usage rate than he’s going to have here in New Orleans is that something that you can really feel comfortable with does he make sense he’s also going to be probably more expensive than maybe almost anyone else on this list and that presents a problem too he can be absorbed into one of the Pelicans exceptions so that’s good you don’t need to give up a player for him this year he can go into the Jonas Val junis train traded player exception as I look at it I think it’s just hard I don’t know if the fits exactly there to give up probably two first round picks which is what you would need to bring him in you know another option from Houston and this one’s bad is jock landale this guy is not good you can get him for a second round pick probably a fake second round pick you could get him but I would not you know you could absorb him into one of the trade player exceptions I wouldn’t do it though cuz he’s not good you know another name that I found kind of interesting and thought about for like all of 30 seconds was Al Horford fits into the Jonas valis traded player exception except the Boston Celtics are never going to do that I think he could be great spaces the Court gives you kind of that veteran presence but there’s no way he is leaving Boston whatsoever so that leads to kind of two more options three more options let’s mention Jaylen Duran from the Pistons I I don’t think they’re going to move him for just a pick I don’t think that’s something that they’re really interested in you need to give up a quality player or a brand Ingram trade built around that and I just don’t think that that’s what they want to do anymore you know another option is someone like cavon Looney from the Golden State Warriors you know he plays exclusively Center for them they win their minutes with him out there on the court you know he’s not an elite option but he’s got kind of that experience would they part with him I’m not sure if you traded Brandon Ingram to the Golden State Warriors could he be included in a deal yeah absolutely he’s started he’s come off the bench he’s kind of just done everything for them at times but he is a little bit under siiz 68 69 can you get away with that when Zion Williamson himself even though he plays much bigger a little bit under size too and that’s not something that I’m entirely sure of right this is someone who’s also not a rim protector he is a very good defensive rebounder and just rebounder in general so as an option I don’t hate it he makes $8 million so you would need to send out some salary in a deal to get something like that done because they only have about 6.8 that they’re allowed to add to this roster right now but I’m sure there’s a way you could kind of figure out a deal and it sounds like Golden State if they want to make a run at Someone Like Larry marinin maybe needs an additional first round pick so is there a way to maybe structure a trade where you give them some sort of protected first round pick for cavon Looney and then they use that for Larry Markin could be but that also kind of solves the option for the pelican there too and then the final guy to look at and this goes into something we talked about the other day on locked on Pelicans is Mark Williams the center from the Charlotte Hornets you know that’s a team that I feel like wants to be competitive this season and they’re not going to be like they’re not going to be they should be better tanking for Cooper flag you know could you maybe try and prye Mark Williams away he was injured the majority of last season for them only playing 19 games but he a young Center Alla Walker Kessler he’ll be 23 next year that maybe gives you what you need and could be available not a rim protector he’s a very good rebounder though I think of all the guys we’ve mentioned he’s probably the best better than Walker Kessler can he just give you the minutes you need there start or come off the bench depending on what happens later yeah I think that is something that you could do he fits into the Kyo Lewis Jr traded player exception making a little over $4 million next season I think he could be an give them a first round pick for him right like that maybe then Sparks their rebuild and they realize this is what we should be doing that’s what they should absolutely be doing whether they will or not I don’t know but that seems to make a lot of sense to me and that fixes the center position I like Walker Kessler out of all of those just for the rim protection he provides and I don’t know if you need to give up too much I think I kind of would then put Mark Williams then cavon Looney then Jabari Smith Jr when you factor in like what you would need to give up maybe Looney would be second but those are the options it’s not bad it’s not amazing out there either and it still gives you the option to trade Brandon Ingram so you have future flexibility with this this is how I think the Pelicans really level up pay the luxury tax maybe become a contender in the Western Conference next year it’s wide open shoot your shot go make it happen what do you think do you agree do you disagree let me know in the comments Down Below on YouTube tomorrow summer league preview we get our first Summer League game Pelicans are going to be in Vegas who are we going to see sitting on the sidelines by the way Zion Ingram we going to see dejonte Murray there you’re going to see dejon Murray there oh other thing final thing on Walker kler I didn’t mention this and I said I would I don’t know if they’re actually willing to trade him right like I’m not actually sure Danny a does this where he’s just like tell me what you want what you’ll give me for him okay never mind goodbye and hangs up the phone Danny a does this he runs the Utah Jazz he’s known for this that makes maybe acquiring Walker Kessler a little bit harder and that’s why we talked about the other options here as well okay now we’re that’s really going to do it for this episode of lockon pelicans I appreciate you all so much for listening as always I’m your host Jake Madison Nola Jake on Twitter and I’ll be back with y’all tomorrow to preview Summer League

The New Orleans Pelicans still need a starting center alongside Zion Williamson and the rumors are that Walker Kessler is available for trade. Jake Madison explains why the Pels need to call the Utah Jazz and trade for Kessler immediately. Plus, New Orleans has to pay the luxury tax this season. And if they can’t get Kessler they should try for Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets.

  1. I totally agree if you can absorb him into a trade exception and only use draft capital they need to make it happen hopefully they do

  2. Seems like you're taking a maybe and running with it jake.its going to take lottery draft capital to get him. I saw an intriguing trade for Ingram with the trailblazers and warriors, where we get Ayton and picks and it was well graded trade with a win, win,win scenario

  3. Wendell Carter Jr. is who we need. Ignore the injuries. Swap him out with missi and Theis accordingly. We’ll be fine
