Woj reports Cade Cunningham signs a 5-year, $224M max rookie contract extension with Pistons

[Music] big news coming out of the NBA Kade Cunningham has agreed to a 5-year $224 million Max extension with the Pistons that’s according to ESPN the deal can reach a maximum value of $269 million and makes him the highest paid player in franchise history Cunningham has been with the Pistons since 2021 when he was selected with the number one overall pick in that year’s NBA draft since then he’s averaged 20 points point six and a half assists and five rebounds per game in three seasons in Detroit John Gonzalez of the Beyond The Arc podcast joining us now with this news so Kate Cunningham agreeing to the fiveyear $224 million Max extension with the Pistons it seems like this is no surprise what’s your take yeah they were always going to resign Kade to a Max I think that there are some people who you know your mileage might vary on his ual game but they were pretty much uh always destined to do this because the alternative is to what to let him walk and it’s a bad team and you need good players and he is a good player he had a slow start till last year and then he really got going after uh October November a little stumble started limiting his turnovers he had been a turnover machine to start the year and then really reduced those became a more efficient shooter he’s a good distributor but the question really Jenny is okay you Max him out and now what cuz this was a terrible team worst record in the NBA last season they have a new coach now and JB bicker staff they changed the front office in comes Trent Langdon to run the to run the organization this is just one piece they need a lot more around Kate Cunningham so what else do they need and what else can they get what else do they need the answer is yes uh jayen Ivy is fine Jaylen durren he he’s showed some flashes last year assar Thompson at the beginning of the Season looked like they had really hit on something but for whatever for whatever reason Monty Williams decided not to play him in favor of Buon bogdanovich for reason surpassing understanding uh and then they go in they draft Ron Holland in this most recent draft who’s a guy uh again mixed reviews on him some people thought that they reached for him other people think that it could potentially be the steal of the draft this is a young team they’re going to try to let this young core grow but you know it’s G to take time and what can they go out and get I mean they got Tobias Harris they had to overpay him and and as somebody who watched Tobias Harris up close uh while he was with the Sixers a very nice man I’m thrilled that he’s not wearing a Sixers Jersey anymore uh so they’re limited here Jenny it’s going to take a second for them to figure this out a very nice man is not how you want to be described when you’re talking about players on the team um now Cunningham you mentioned he will have his third coach in three seasons in JB bicker staff he also played as he said with Monte Williams Dwayne Casey so so what’s the Outlook as far as the coaching staff goes and what they can get out of Cunningham yeah that’s part of the reason why they decided to change from Monty Williams to JB right they didn’t think that Monty Williams had gotten enough out of this young core in comes JB Bickerstaff who you know the wheels really came off for him in Cleveland last year they ended up tanking their way into the four seed he didn’t leave town covered in glory and it’s gonna be tough for him to to you know find any Glory with the Detroit Pistons if he can improve Kate’s game get him to work well with Jaden Ivy and Jaylen Duran that’s a nice thre man rotation uh develop a s Thompson and Ron Holland as useful rotational Wing players that would also be uh a nice move a nice development for JB bicker staff but yeah it really is just about development there I mean they’re not going to win many games they didn’t win many last year and it’s not going to change this season either so slow and steady wins the race for JB John Gonzalez appreciate your time here on HQ as we just got the news Kate Cunningham agreeing to a 5year $224 million Max extension with the pist the deal can reach a maximum value of $269 million making him the highest paid player in franchise history and you best believe they’ll be discussing this on the elsewhere in Northern California on Saturday the Sacramento Kings acquiring deard Rosen in a sign and trade from the Bulls he’s going to sign a three-year deal worth a reported $74 million according to ESPN the 34-year-old spent the previous three seasons with Chicago and last year he averaged 24 points per game and how about D rozan showing up in Sacramento at the golden one center for the summer league California classic getting a standing ovation from the crowd dear back in his home state and for more we welcome in CBS Sports NBA riter Sam Quinn and look Sam we knew Demar wasn’t going to be a bull right after after all the Rumblings you know later into the season and in this off season what do you think though about the fit with Demar dearon Fox and Damonte sabonis it’s a questionable fit on the surface now if you look at what has made Sacramento work over these last two years it’s primarily been offense they have dearen fox in the back court they have Malik monk they were already pretty set on Perimeter players who could score but maybe not defend very well now they’re adding a third one and Demar D Rose into the mix but Demar doesn’t shoot threes he’s primarily an on ball player that really hurts dearen Fox value because look he’s become a better shooter over the last two years but dearen Fox is somebody who’s at his best with the ball in his hands as well so suddenly is this going to affect Malik Monk’s shooting volume is damis sabonis going to be able to run as much offense himself through the high post I have some questions about the fit here if I were going to invest this kind of money and throw in an unpr protected pick swap my inclination would have been we should probably be targeting somebody who is a little bit more inclined towards defense you know look the Kings may have declined a bit offensively last year they fell to number 13 in the rankings there were injuries behind that Malik monk missed time at the end of the year Kevin herder Miss time at the end of the year but they were the most efficient offense in NBA history two years ago I don’t think offense was really the problem now they’ve really doubled down on offense here they’re a very guard heavy team and they’ve added somebody who doesn’t necessarily augment the players that they already had right and you talk about defense uh you need that as we saw with the Boston Celtics when you have a very well balanced defensive attack and then you also add that with the offense that is very hard to stop the Kings they do not have that currently presented now I do want to know your perspective here Sam uh where do they rank in terms of the West because apparently Sacramento did this you know to try to keep up with all the great teams in the Western Conference but I think you and I know it’s probably at least on paper not really moving them up a whole lot no there’s a very clear top four in the west here in whatever order you want to put it it’s Oklahoma City it’s Dallas it’s Denver you know it’s these teams that were already there at the end last year I don’t think that this really moves the Kings into that tier I think this maybe makes them a little bit safer as far as could you get into the top six could you maybe have home court in the playing round only have to win one playing game get in that s eight range but the West is so tight we saw this last year there were large stretches of the Season where the kings were a top six team in the standings and then they suffer a few injuries down the stretch and the West is so deep that they fall all the way down to number nine what I will say about demard rosan that helps he’s very durable he tends to be on the court and he’s very consistent if you do lose de Fox for a 105 game stretch if you do lose Malik monk at the end of the year it really does help to have Demar D rozan there when you get to clutch situations de’arra Fox was the clutch Player of the Year in 2023 Demar de R rozan was the runner up last year you now have two of the best clutch shot makers in the NBA the hope there is that you’re going to be able to steal a couple of close games late that you might not have gotten last year but like look ultimately the defense is such a problem like I can’t expect them to keep up with the Thunder with the Mavericks with the nuggets with the Timberwolves these teams that have proven that they can over a full season sustain it on both ends of the floor and look if Demar was a great three-point shooter if I saw this acquisition and thought man the kings are going to be the number one offense in the NBA again they have great spacing all the fits really make sense together then I might be a little bit more inclined to call them a contender but given the questionable fit the defensive issues and by the way Demar D rozan is about to turn 35 he’s no spring chicken here so they’re probably to me at best looking at a five seed more likely hanging around that play mix again maybe slightly better than they were last year okay so if they get the 5c then of course that is an improvement from what they did last year you know uh the team that a lot of people uh have interesting theories about right the Chicago Bulls right they get a couple second rounders back I think they’re more details coming out they’ve now lost you know Demar D rozan Alex Caruso who knows what’s going to happen with Zack LaVine where do they go from here man you know this trade has two real benefits for the for the Bulls obviously you’re trying to get worse this year that fore foreign fore spee spee speee foree [Music] fore spee fore foree speee foree fore fore spee for
