alongside our front office Insider Bobby marks fresh off of the plane from Las Vegas our senior writer Mark Spears he is still in Las Vegas writer Zack low he always brings the Vegas energy everywhere he goes we got our first real look friends at uh Team USA the 20124 Olympic Squad last night remember no Kevin Durant no Kawhi Leonard anymore a huge test right out of the gate with a stacked Canada team we had a a fun little debate over who would be starting Steve Kerr he threw in some curveballs Steph Devin Booker Drew holiday LeBron Joel embiid to open up friendly play here so Bobby you were in the building you got to see this front and center so did uh Barry o taking a little photo there with Don Staley as we said no Kevin Durant in this one so we’re going to pick this one up it was just a little bit stagnant Bobby for the US Squad to start this game yeah it looked like there was a bunch of five players that had never played before and I think that’s kind of like you know this is not the team select that they just played against this is Team Canada that is really really good here right and the offensive connection just wasn’t there you see the turnover ah Dylan Brooks he was booed basically every time that uh he touched the ball Steph Curry though he says yeah you know what the three-point Line’s a foot shorter I got this one guys gets him on the board with the three there and then Team Canada going to work here sgaa just can’t quite get that one to fall so here comes the US One More Time Jason Tatum nice little move there drops it up and in the bench was electrifying last night when you look at Jason Tatum Anthony Edwards bam out of bio and Anthony Davis better than the starting five that started the game wow well we’ve seen this before LeBron James big block there Steph Curry gets it up to Joel embiid embiid feeds it back out to Devin Booker that is cash so then under six minutes left to play here Brooks drives here on embiid draws the foul embiid he actually would later foul out he played only 12 minutes uh before that happened if this was an NBA game Joel would have gotten a flagrant two and we wouldn’t have seen him the rest of the game that was the second play that last night of of of of a borderline dirty play we’re going to get into Joel embiid and what exactly they need from him if they want to win gold here but let’s go ahead to the third quarter here Bobby Steph Curry arrives draws the foul and then look he said hey strike a little pose it’s all about spacing once the us if USA can get out and run they are as deadly as any team that we’re going to see here but that was it Bobby that was the moment Le on Steph having a little bit of fun there after the game well I mean we got a long way to go to get to where we want to get to but it’s a good first start I thought uh the best thing about tonight is defensively we was in tune um offensively it’s just you know some things that you know all about timing and that’s going that’s going to take you know time with with more practices and and and things of that nature but I thought uh we had all great intentions tonight and uh it was a good start for us really just getting started four days of practice um you could see the the rust on the offensive end a lot of turnovers in that first half especially but I loved the defensive intensity and uh the work on the glass um so it was a good good first effort we just want to win gold I mean whatever that takes so we always talk about no matter what your stats are don’t man how many minutes you play like everybody on the floor commit to just doing what you has to do we’ll be good I don’t know if you got one more question but it’s my daughter’s ninth birthday happy birthday Ryan I’m sorry I couldn’t be there this we’re here playing basketball doing what we love I miss you love you happy Birthday oh man I mean that that’s the second best thing as opposed to actually being able to be together for a ninth birthday celebration but look at this Team USA started their exhibition late with a win they are the runaway favorites to win a fifth straight gold medal in men’s basketball Canada has the second shortest odds according to ESPN bet followed by France Serbia but the odds makers are still leaning team USA’s direction as you can see here all right I’m rolling up my sleeves to nitpick because that’s exactly what really this is going to be when Anthony Davis called the United States unbeatable when they play defense like that but he also said offensively quote we were pretty terrible Mark you were in the building last night what’s the biggest question that you still have remaining about this us team it’s about guys accepting their roles I actually talked to a NBA head coach right now who had USA Basketball experience and he said his big question mark with this team is do they have Elite role players and I recently talked to Grant Hill the executive director of the team and he had a great quote he said a go a coach told him that in order to have a successful team you got to treat it like a piano recital you need piano players but you also need piano movers and piano tuners and everyone can’t be a piano player but if everybody plays their role you could play some great music together so the USA has four more games to figure out how to put together a great piano recital to Gold well and I think that’s the biggest question is who’s their fifth starter right when we look at certainly Drew holiday we can probably pencil him in there and I think it maybe comes down to Devon Booker who started last night and then Anthony Edwards I would say it would be Edwards but I love the role he was in last night I love that six man I love that sixthman role coming off the bench giving his team energy going to the basket uh we’re not going to see Anthony Edward score 30 points like we saw in the Dallas and uh Dallas series here it’s 13 14 points but him in the game last night basically gave USA separation well we also saw in the Highlight Joel and right he fouled out less than 13 minutes on the floor let’s just take a listen to what he said about that after the game feel pretty good body wasse you know this is uh what the fourth or the fifth day uh going up and down so feel pretty good and got to get used to uh you know the competition and and you know get back into it but uh you know it was a good start you know that’s my first time being at the FI level so it was a little different all right it was a little different there’s a little bit of an adjustment period but what does the the United States need out of Joel embiid if they’re going to to win gold Ju Just play his own game I I just thought last night certainly in the first uh first quarter it just got stagnated that the US threw him the ball and he basically tried playing Bully ball and the offense just stalled and I think he got frustrated throughout the night we saw the one foul there was a foul before that where he pushed um Derek Powell um Dwight Powell down to the ground here and it just felt like this was new to him international basketball is a lot different than NBA basketball certainly how that he gets officiated is going to be a lot different here well how is that going to look Mark what does the the transition for him look like because he doesn’t have that much time to ramp up to the rules that that Bobby is talking about here yeah five fouls in 12 minutes that’s not good but I think we forget that he’s the only guy on this team that has zero International experience this was actually his International debut he never played for Cameroon so if anybody needs these five exhibition games it’s going to be embiid so he could figure fure out the Cadence of international basketball especially defensively and I could tell that the Canadian guards were baiting him getting him to get the fouls it’s a 40-minute game so he has a lot to adjust to and uh hopefully by the time they get to Paris he’ll figure out right you know Bobby mentioned the offensive part I’m more worried about the defensive part with him okay what did you see here Zach I thought the team looked awesome for its first game together I mean they won by 14 points they were down by 10 they outscored Canada 25 rest of the game the size the defense transition Curry looked awesome he’s going to be like a star role player shooter whatever you want to call him as far as Joel I think that is the biggest question because how are they going to fit his back to the basket game within the sort of faster free flowing style that they want to play although we saw LeBron post up some last night too and what is life going to look like when a team plays Five Shooters there was a brief snippet of the game when Joel was guarding Kelly L and that’s just not his comfort zone on defense compared to guarding a roller like Dwight Powell you can bet some of the teams that are capable of playing that way are going to test him but look this just reinforced what those odds you put up showed at the beginning of the show it’s going to take a bad performance even against the other best teams in the world it’s going to take the US just playing badly and shooting badly for us to lose good point well the biggest thing is that Steve car’s got a nice insurance policy with Anthony Davis and Bam out of Bio those who played last night uh I don’t know what their plus minus was but it was off off the chart here and I think certainly it’s going to be dependent on the game so if USA hits France in a metal round and they’ve got Victor Wy and Rudy go then I think we could see uh embiid and Davis together maybe you see adabo and Davis together here I think it’s a lot of it dependent on who the matchup is they might roll out against Canada who doesn’t have a traditional big and basically put all guards out there well we didn’t see obviously Kevin Durant play as he’s still working to come back from from that leg injury which which Team USA is saying is minor and they think that he’s going to be okay to go uh in the future here someone else who didn’t play though Derek white last night he was a late addition remember to the US roster after kawh Leonard dropped out so we showed you some of this yesterday but just a little bit of a a reminder here of how this Saga has unfolded Jaylen brown maybe seemed a little bit let’s go with confused by the news because less than an hour after white was named to the Olympic roster he posted this just some thinking monal emojis and then after after he followed up with a nice direct quote saying at Nike this is what we’re doing now so Nike of course is one of the sponsors for Team USA so managing director Grant Hill he responded yesterday take a listen well for a good portion of my crew law um so um that was supposed to be a joke you get 12 spots and you have to build a team and one of the hardest things is leaving people off the roster that I’m a of that I look forward to watching throughout the season throughout the playoffs um guys who’ve been um finals MVPs guys who’ve been a part of the program guys who’ve won gold medals the responsibility that I have is to put together a team and a team that complements each other a team that fits a team that will um give us the best opportunity for Success Okay so some good context there from from Grant Hill but Mark you spoke to some folks out in Vegas just help us understand the decision-making process here yeah I mean I I think it’s kind of going back to that piano player thing with Grant Hill talk to him about it and he just someone’s going to be mad and a lot of people going to be mad everybody can’t be happy but that NBA head coach that I talked to who had USA Basketball experience said he thought Derek white was a a great selection somebody got to be the 12th man right um I did talked to Jason Tatum asked him about it kind of being Bittersweet you’re adding a third second and he Celtic and he said that you know they’re adding more Championship DNA to the roster I’m like well what about Jaylen Brown have you talked to him took a deep breath and he just said no no no and that was it okay so they haven’t spoken about it at least not yet Bobby do you think that they made the right decision by Dereck white being the selection I I do I just look at last year playing on the World Cup team with Derek White having that International experience and as Mark said kind of being that 11th and 12th man cting Phil filling a rle I think you could have went Mel Bridges I think you could have went Josh Hart two wings that played International ball last year and it’s not this is not an All-Star Game this is not an All-Star game where we’re getting up and down it’s about defending it’s about finding a role and I think Derek white was the right choice Zach last word on this I’m I’m fine with it I understand why Jaylen Brown’s mad he was just named the best player in the semifinals and the fin fin in the best league in the world and three of his teammates are on this team but look all of these guys Stars role players whatever they’re all capable of modulating their games to fit within this context we saw that last night Derek white is maybe a little more amendable to that a little bit of an easier faster speedier playmaker but you can’t go wrong and I understand why he’s mad but I think Derek White’s a great fit for what this specific Team USA needs hey I think trying to read too much into cryptic sweets and put it’s always it’s always a losing battle for me we got hi where has time gone we are way overdue for our first hot summer mics of the season so we saw you know a handful of teams introduce new players this week the Knicks the Mavericks the 76ers but we’re going to start in New Orleans as we welcome our reporter covering the Warriors Kendra Andrews on uh Thursdays we wear pink absolutely let’s let’s start though down in The Big Easy Deonte Murray was introduced he spoke to reporters with Zion Williamson sitting in the front bro that’s that’s our Superstar uh and I’m excited to push him I told him I’mma push him and this goes back before I was joining the team we both love the game so you know like I said when it comes to drills if I see something that I think he could be better at he SE something than me we’re going to be open to that preparations everything but I’m excited to push him to the next level cuz he has a bunch of levels he could reach nice suit also deante uh but Superstar okay that that is what what the Zion Williamson came into this league with the moniker of what does he need to do Bobby to live up to to that I mean it’s just one word health I mean that’s it he just has to stay healthy every year we kind of pencil in who our top five is for MVPs I have him in there I’ve had him in there the last two years going into the regular season okay but there’s an aster next to it it’s contingent on him staying healthy and I I think we certainly saw in that Laker playing game when he’s healthy he’s dominant when he’s hurt that team struggles here but for me it’s just about staying healthy what do you think Zach health and conditioning and we saw after that embarrassment against the Lakers in the inseason tournament he got in better shape and he started to dig in on defense and there were even a couple games where he insisted and took the kawh Leonard assignment against the Clippers and guarded him well and that’s the Zion they need he looks awesome when he’s able to be out on the floor I was talking to one of his teammates the other day and he said to me you know what I think that this is going to be the summer this is the summer when he locks in because the habits have to start now that are then going to carry over for the season so that we can all see this Zion Williamson that we are rooting for all right how about this let’s check in on the Miami Heat a little bit of a a lackluster off season Terry Rosier had some thoughts the fans is Bor right now they want to put as much scenarios as they can together for us but uh at the end of the day we we we want to we want to run it back with our same team obv What it looking like and we want to show the fans you know what we can bring you know to to Miami all right Zach can the heat though just afford to run it back as as Terry was saying I don’t know what other choice they have right now but the walls are starting to close in on the heat Jimmy Butler is a year older he’s in the last year of his contract we don’t know what happens there Caleb Martin’s departure is a huge loss for them he just filled out so many of their lineups and the top of the East is better look Tera your right we barely got to see this team play together healthy after they traded for him but it’s an uphill climb now this team has finished six their worst in the East three out of the last four years I don’t know why we should expect a great regular season from them and it’s just hard to come from the bottom every year in the playoffs right I live in South Florida congratulations fans well not right now it’s hot down there Heat fans want more they want more they see what Boston had did last year they see what New York has done they saw with um certainly Philadelphia as far as loading up here but as Zach said what else can you do they’re limited on their draft picks they can send out they would have loved to get demard de rozan they tried as heck to get demard de rozan nobody wanted Duncan Robinson no offense they had one first round pick to trade they wanted Ty Jones they couldn’t make a deal here so they’re basically kind of it’s about Fringe moves as far as what they can do yeah I mean that’s comes down to it right what can you do what teams can you work with in order to make move and as you look around the entire Association Eastern Conference Western Conference as other teams especially at top of those conferences keep getting better what can those middle of the pack teams do options are limited well yeah for Miami really the options are limited and it’s kind of funny because we always say you know don’t bet against the Heat you can’t bet against Eric spola Jimmy Butler the performances we saw him put in the bubble but it feels like some of that magic at least is starting to run out particularly as the conference is just getting better around them but I would put Health in there too as Terry Rosier said if they can get that core Tyler hero bam bio Jimmy Butler Terry all healthy at the same time that’s something we didn’t get to see a whole lot of uh last season all right next the Santa Antonio Spurs they introduced Chris Paul ahead of his 20th NBA season here’s what he had to say I come to hoop you know uh I’m not a coach you know I mean so there’s definitely things to be learned and all stuff but I come in obviously with a lot of Knowledge from on the job training but I also come in trying to learn from these guys that’s probably been the coolest thing about my career he is clearly saying that I’m not an ornament I’m not here just to coach up some young players I’m here to win but the Spurs they were one of the bottom dwellers in a tough Western Conference last year Kendra how many games can they realistically expect to win they won 22 games I think last season I think they’re going to win in the upper 30s they can get into 40 something win but I don’t think you’re going to see them break 50 that that’s hard to do because they did struggle so much but look when I look at Chris Paul joining the Spurs and I covered him last season when he was in Golden State he says he’s not there to be a coach and he’s not but he is going to be a mentor something I observed with him with the Warriors younger players last season and you don’t see this a lot in the NBA more so in college in the middle of games during a dead ball before a free throw he would huddle up the younger players and make sure everyone was on the same page before going to the next play that’s what he’s going to give to the Spurs he did that for be a countdown too before the next play he all of us in and be like all right this is this is what we got to do you think this is a playoff team though I don’t I think the in a perfect world 30 wins be competitive get to the allstar break maybe you’re looking to maybe move off Harrison Barnes who you got in a trade for more draft Equity 30 wins and get a top three pick in a perfect world I think that’s where you’re looking at for San Antonio so you say no playoffs Zach what say you in a perfect world I’ll bet Bobby right now over under 30 and a half wins I’ll take the over winner gets a steak dinner and a nice bottle of wine on the loser I think we’re going to get to April 1st and the Spurs are going to be in the play in race holding on and maybe trying to sneak into at least a play in ter but I think this could be a 500 team CU that kid Victor wanyama is ready he’s that good and it’s just hard to lose a lot of games when you got a player that good it took a lot of work for them to win 22 games last year and they’ve improved the roster let’s go for it win some games I I listen if that if Zach asked me next week seven days into Las Vegas I’m going to agree to him I might even think they’ll they’ll lose and make it to the conference final so I I get it I like my stake medium I’m I’m with Zach could be the first the last Olympics for Steph Curry as he just mentioned always appreciate the time from both Steph and Steve Curry there uh but Kendra you you’ve been around Steph more than anyone and it was interesting to hear him kind of contextualize I don’t get many firsts anymore there’s not many basketball firsts that I have why is he so excited about this opportunity well I mean I think it goes to what you just said what he just said it’s the first maybe the last time he hasn’t competed for an Olympic gold before he gets to team up with LeBron James for the first time all of those things but also when you look at the Warriors the past couple Seasons really since that Championship that you highlighted in that interview the vibe has been different they’ve gone through far more Downs than they had in the past 10 years that joy that was so important to the Warriors has been fleeting a little bit you see him in this environment there’s just so much pure basketball Joy you’re with the big basketball junkies in the country and he’s feeding off of that right now well and he said you know I’m he’s a showman and the when he’s posing for the camera at the Baseline and doing all of those things it’s the Golden State Warriors it’s fun and and the Warriors are in a position right now that they really haven’t been in a very very long time because if you take a look right now according to ESPN bet they have 40 to1 preseason odds to win the title those are the longest odds entering a season since 2012 13 that’s when Steph was 24 years old it’s hard to believe it right he’s entering his 16th season in the league he’ll be 37 next march he’s still producing though at an elite level he says you know what he’s still in his prime but Clay’s gone there’s a new era of the dubs that’s upon us they’ve added some solid role players I’m looking at buddy heeld I’m looking at DeAnthony Melton uh Kyle Anderson slow-mo but Zach do you think the Warriors have done enough ultimately to continue to build around Steph Curry and maximize this Prime here it depends what your standard is I mean this is what happens to Great teams they get old and they go down the standings Steph Curry riding out his career on a good team and the Warriors are a good team winning 45 46 games in the west that ain’t easy Steph Curry riding out his career on that kind of team with young guys coming up that’s a nice honorable way to end your career it’s not a title team I don’t think it’s really close to a title team and the question the Warriors have to ask themselves is they’re in on these Lowry market and trade talks to the degree those talks are happening what is the right price for the Warriors to give up out of their young players and their future assets and how good depending on what out goes out the door how good is the team that Lowry Markin and is walking into is that really a championship team is it really a team that’s worth throwing a lot of your future out the door to get Lowry Markin in and the guy that I think this is going to call us around in the next week or so is the league gathers in Las Vegas is Jonathan kaminga who’s eligible for an extension whose role has has gone up and down with the Warriors he is the best young player on the team the Blue Chip of the two timelines thing that was kind of an accident and I just am fascinated to see what their answer to that question turns out to be well here’s a date to keep an eye on August 6th write it down that is the first day that Larry marketing can become renegotiation eligible Utah right now is sitting on $34 million in caps space they’ve signed nobody everybody else has gone out and done their business they have not signed anything it’s also synonymous that it’s 6 months from the trade deadline so if marinin signs the extension on August 6th he’s still eligible to be traded on February 6 if he signs it after he’s off the board here so that’s the date to keep an eye on as far as from marketing if golden state is in play right and goes back to what we were talking about with the heat which is who are the dance Partners the Warriors can get look I was told that even last trade deadline the Warriors wanted to shake things up but the core group of that team said no let us stick together and the front office said okay you see how that season turned out so now they enter this season saying we need to make moves well and to your point about dance Partners we heard Paul George say on his podcast that he really wanted to go to Golden State but that’s not a dance that the Clippers wanted to do it’s not like teams are lining up to help the four-time champion Golden State Warriors particularly teams in their same conference so that’s a dance they’re going to have to do I don’t know whether or not the Warriors are going to continue to try to go big game hunting this offseason because there’s not a whole lot of big game left but it is clear that star players they love playing with Steph Curry it’s evident in team USA’s praise for the four time champ who are you most excited to play alongside the summer Steph I’m going to say I say Steph this guy named uh Steph Curry is phenomenal to play with he was on my team today and I got so many open like looks just happy to be here I mean I’m playing with Hall of Famers Curry I played with him in 14 both of our games have developed all the way from 14 10 years ago playing with some uh amazing talent like this is something you can’t take for granted I mean everybody wants to play with Steph Curry it’s just not necessarily reflected in what they were able to do this off season so let’s go ahead Bobby to October if you could be Mr October for us here for a second and the new look Golden State Warriors the 3D lineup let’s play with it a little bit I really like what they did I mean we have De Anthony Melton in in the starting lineup right now look at their bench they got Brandon psky buddy hee Moses Moody it’s interchangeable you could put moody in for Wiggins here their depth I really like their depth is it gets you into the top six uh I don’t think think so can it get you more than 46 wins here here’s what we’re talking about from a flexibility standpoint we’re talking about marketing as far as where they are the apron we’ve talked about the apron they are hard capped at the first apron they’re only $742,000 below so if they’re going to send out more money in a trade and take back marketing $18 million it’s not going to work and then here’s what their their picks are they have a 2026 2028 2030 which is top uh 21 to 30 protected they can move that if San Antonio gets in play for marketing let’s say they have a loaded draft picks as far as and then the players are off the board the three players are to signed free agent contracts they cannot be traded until December 15th so when you’re looking at it and Zach made a mention about Jon Jonathan kaminga if you’re not certain about paying Marin in in Utah are you certain about paying kaminga in on an new extension because the numbers are basically going to be comp comparable right fair I I’m looking at this though and you mentioned not top six for Golden State we talked so much about this with LeBron James saving his legs not playing that extra play in game or playing game or two with Steph Curry and an aging roster how important is that to be in the top six it’s huge I mean we talked about Miami before Miami’s been kind of H hanging around that playin and it’s cost them certainly Jimmy Butler gets hurt in that Philadelphia game they’ve got to be in the top six if this team is going to advance and now we look at Memphis we look at Houston we look at certainly some of the younger teams Oklahoma City I mean we can go through the list here they’re not in the top six here for them to go through two rounds of playing and then try to advance with an older Steph Curry that’s going to be a challenge and they’re a little hamstrung as you just laid out in what options they have to continue to build this roster hey we got a lot of he’s up against LSU gymnast Haley Bryant CJ stad Juju Watkins out of USC it’s been a while since this first season ended so we just want to remind you about how absurd Victor is uh just I laugh cuz it’s insane this is what he put up in his last 15 games as a rookie the only player to put up these numbers in a season is Kareem Abdul Jabar and he was 28 so Victor and France they could give the us some tough competition for a medal here Bobby
