They Should’ve NEVER Let The Mavericks Acquire These Players

I feel as if the Dallas Mavericks have had a lot of unfair criticism because of the way that the bracket went against them so they started off against the Clippers we know kawhai Leonard was dealing with injuries and then they go up against the Thunder who were the one seed they were a very young team but still they were the best team in the Western Conference they had an MVP type of player in Shay Gillis Alexander and then in the Wester Conference Finals people were picking the Timberwolves they were the number one rank defense Anthony Edwards was dominating and the Mavericks beat them and they go against the Boston Celtics the best team in the league top five in both offense and defense and they lose in five games overall it’s easy to see why the Dallas Mavericks lost that series they didn’t have enough perimeter shooting the Celtics exploited that Kyrie Irving averaged only 20 a game he was absolutely horrific from the field against the Celtics specifically on the road he just never was able to find a rhythm game three Kyrie Irving had a terrific performance I know the Mavericks ended up losing that and Luca F out but this team is only going going to learn from it that’s the biggest takeaway for me for the Dallas Mavericks season is that mentally they’re going to be more tougher moving for the next time they make the playoffs they’re going to be more prepared the roster construction though had to change Tim Hardway Jr had to be traded I’m looking specifically at Dereck Jones Jr he’s a guy that’s just not a good three-point shooter had a career year and still was a poor three-point shooter defensively is fantastic I thought he did a better job just about as anyone of guarding the opposing team’s best player making it a lot easier on Kyrie and Luca but overall Jones in the final games of that Boston series his minutes just kept going down and down because the Celtics were daring him to shoot and make him beat them and when you have luuka and Kyrie guys that are going to generate open looks and the Mavericks aren’t taking them or they are taking them and they’re missing them that’s a major issue so Dallas they go out there in the off season and they bring in three players so they bring in Naji Marshall Quinton Grimes in Kay Thompson three absolutely fantastic Shooters Klay to this point at 34 years old does not give you much defensively but for Dallas they were willing to sacrifice defense for offense I’d rather have a guy out there that is an all-time great shooter and a down season was at 39% Klay Thompson he hasn’t regressed as a shooter he’s regressed as a two-way player but he’s still as good of a shooter as he ever has been and last season he was in a situation to where he didn’t really want to be there he had a rookie starting over him the Warriors clearly had no sort of intentions whatsoever of paying him for the future and even if Klay did come back it was reported that he was coming off the bench so that just was never going to be an option for clay he was going through a lot with the organization and he still went out there and was giving the Warriors scoring three-point shooting and now he’s going to give the Mavericks that a team that overall it’s just a fresh start for clay to go out there and to win a championship the Warriors they miss the playing tournament they don’t really have a sense of direction right now whereas the Mavericks are coming off of a finals appearance they’re one of the best teams in the league they’ve got Luca Don who in my opinion I think he’s the best player in basketball and the reason why I believe that is because he goes out there and he gives you 30 points nine boards nine assists he’s clutch there isn’t a player in the league that I’d rather have the ball in their hands and Luca at the end of a game the Marty Rosen and Steph Curry are right up there but Luca with his size ability IQ just off the charts I mean it doesn’t matter who’s guarding him it’s an easy bucket every single time the one knock against Luca that I have is that he has struggled playing basketball deep into the season you could tell that game five was all he had left in the tank I mean Luca we’re talking about going a couple of extra months deep into the season because he made the finals in the Mavericks and he just didn’t really have enough in him to do that it didn’t help as well that Kyrie Irving did didn’t Elevate his game like he usually does in big moments Kyrie really did struggle in the finals overall but at the end of the day Luc and Kyrie still had the most points by a duo in playoff history so they did a lot of things right just who’s around them is going to be the biggest thing two guys aren’t going to win a championship Derek Lively deserves the most under respect for what he was able to do as a 20-year-old rookie the guy lost his mother in April it was a double double machine once his minutes increased he just completely took the league by storm you also have a guy guy like a PJ Washington I’m looking at Daniel Gafford these additions at the trade deadline ultimately determined the Mavericks season they became one of the best teams in the league after that February 8th trade deadline they were an elite defensive team we talk about the Mavericks now they can score the basketball but it was actually their defense that’s why they made it to the finals and that’s why they were able to put themselves into a situation to of course get that first round match up with the Clippers which is a matchup that the Mavericks certainly I’d have to imagine liked if kawh Leonard had been healthy in playing it would have been extremely tough but he wasn’t and that’s why they wanted the Clippers right but looking at Dallas as well guys on their roster you like for example technically that’s not true because Josh Green’s no longer on the roster he was traded to the Hornets in that clay sinning trade but Josh Green in the 2022 Western Conference playoffs was off he was just not very good this time around though much different story because he goes out there he plays overseas he has the experience with Dallas and he elevates his game and that’s what I see with this Mavericks team next season they’re going to be in a much better spot to go out there into now have that mental toughness in the biggest moments because Dallas when it mattered in the finals was simply just nowhere to be found and for the Mavericks a couple of other moves that they made was going out and getting Quinton Grimes and as a Knicks fan myself I love Quint and Grimes as ridiculous this as it sounds I remember I didn’t want Donovan Mitchell because I wasn’t willing to give him up in a trade and you have to realize that Grimes at the end of that 2022 23 season he gives the Knicks highle defense I mean you look at Grimes he was guarding one through four he had a defensive rating of 117.5 and that was with him going up against the opposing team’s best player against yor Mavericks on December 27th 2022 he was seven of 16 from three 33 points played 48 minutes in that overtime loss definitely as a Knicks fan again do not want to call that one that was one of the most embarrassing losses that I’ve ever seen of my team and that says a lot cuz I’m a Knicks fan we’ have some a lot of them that was the one where luuka had like eight points in two seconds you know remember but Grimes he played in 65 of the last 66 games that season averaged 32 minutes per game 64 68 wingspan there was a game on April 5th 2023 where he was five of 13 from Deep 14 of 23 from the field had 36 points absolutely was on fire before game six of the semi-finals of 2023 playoffs Jimmy Butler had 16 points on 29.4% shooting he was 04 from three game six Jimmy did get hot and was pretty much Unstoppable that one but we can see that Grimes he has exactly what Dallas wants length ability to shoot the basketball ability to defend because Dallas has been getting a lot of unfair criticism Derek Jones Jr and of course Josh Green both ended up leaving the team two of some of their best defenders but Grimes is a very capable I would even say he’s a good Defender and then Naji Marshall who I haven’t talked to I’m about to talk about him right now is a good Defender as well 68 220 he’s got the length but you didn’t bring in Naji Marshall for his defense you brought him in for his offense because he is a good playmaker he’s coming off of the best three-point shooting season of his career 38.7% from three 39.6 and catch and shoot on 134 attempts and open shots with it’s open shot is classified as 4 to 6 feet of space he shot 54 of 109 49.5% and on wide open shots six plus feet of space he shot 43 of 100 which of course is 43% so you have a shooter who is 68 knocks down threes when he’s wide open essentially doesn’t miss who generates the most open threes in basketball LCA donit Kyrie Irving right you put these two together they now have a reliable guy in the wing that is capable of knocking it down drick Jones Jr not to continue to pick on him but he was a liability in the finals Naj Marshall simply won’t be right if you want to let Luca and Kyrie go one1 then you’re obviously going to lose the game but if you do send somebody to help them well now you’re giving up a guy who is going to knock down an open three at a 40% clip right so it’s basically pick your poison if the Mavericks had had their roster constructed differently against the Celtics they would have been in a much better spot but you add in the fact that now they have the roster construction that they want on on top of the experience of going to the NBA finals everybody on this roster and in this organization is a massive winner nobody has improved the roster as much as the Dallas Mavericks
