He’s not lying. Klay shot a blinding 45%(!!!) on wide open 3s last season. With Luka and Kyrie being able to make passes like this, defenses will have to play honest. Not only does that open up driving lanes for Luka and Kyrie, it also gives Lively more opportunities to score in the PnR. Losing DJJ’s defense will be tough for the starting lineup, but Klay being such a threat on the perimeter opens up our offense to a new level.

Just wanna clarify this is not a DJJ hate post. I loved his defense and he did actually shoot well for the first 3 series. He’s just never been a reliable 3pt shooter, and the Mavs trying to use him as one lead to a lot of these sold clips and a finals loss. Replacing him with one of the best catch and shoot 3 point shooters ever is why Nico Harrison is a fucking genius.
Oh btw I could’ve made this vid like half an hour long if I included EVERY crazy Luka pass that gets sold by his teammates. Get ready for him and Klay to farm highlights lol

I think Klay is one of the greatest shooters but everyone has a bad day and Klay went 0/10 on 3PA, don’t forget that and overhyped yourself

The player I’m looking forward to as much as Klay is Grimes. He has the most ridiculous release I’ve seen and would have been able to shoot two 3’s before DJJ could get one up🤣
I have zero doubt he’ll average 40%+ with the looks he’ll get from Luka and everyone else. I’ve been waiting for the day Luka would get surrounded by GOOD shooters.

It’s not like they didn’t replace DJJ’s defense. Naji Marshall is a defensive beast. He brings toughness and versatility. He can guard 1-4. And, Quentin Grimes is a very strong defender.
Even though DJJ did play great defense, outside of a few highlight alley oops throughout the season and a couple in the playoffs, he was the least memorable player from the team last year in my opinion.
Nothing against the guy, he just wasn’t someone I really connected with as a fan and I’m not too upset that we moved on from him especially considering the money he wanted and rightfully deserved.
It was also frustrating how he was just never a threat on offense and teams were willing to leave him open and he still couldn’t capitalize.
Mavs may just have the weakest perimeter defense in the league. I mean I love Luka but him, Kyrie and Klay on D will scare nobody.
Tim hardaway jr only shot wide open shots all game and was still terrible. Klay will EAT this season
The thing that I find most interesting is that I don’t think there will be anyone on the perimeter that you can sag off of. We’ll have Klay, Naji, and Grimes who are all better 3 pt shooters than Derrick is. With Luka, Kai, and Klay all being guarded, PJ/Naji/Grimes will get much more wide open looks. I imagine their percentages get better on the Mavs.
