Houston Rockets Summer League roster breakdown – reaction and players to watch
Houston Rockets are beginning their summer league foray this weekend and uh let’s do a little summer league roster breakdown Riley Davis with me today a lot of interesting names on this one this is one of the more I would say star Laden summer league teams this year we got neali Dante AJ Griffin Nate Hinton Trevor keles Kyra Lewis Jr Mike miles Orlando Robinson Germaine Samuels Reed Shepard Morris UD shahata Wells Fabian White Jr C Whitmore Nate Williams and vonius wbri cam Whitmore Reed Shepard and then you got the the Duke Duo of AJ Griffin Trevor Keels Riley what do you think this roster yeah you hinted at it at the top but this is a roster you put together if you’re trying to win summer league and of course we’ll see how many of these guys actually play in every game but you don’t bring out both Reed Shepard and well of course Reed’s gonna play a couple games but you don’t bring out cam Whitmore to pair with him if you’re not trying to win this uh but aside from that too it’s not just the Duke the Duke Duo of AJ Griffin and Trevor Keels you have Nate Hinton and Fabian white who played together at Houston you have Mike miles and shihata Wells who played at TCU together I I like this buddy system game from the Rockets it’s a getting a little getting a little head start on the chemistry that’s oh so crucial if you want to make a little run here when these players like there’s a reason why you see some teams not even break 60 in Summer League games these guys have never most of these guys have never played with each other before yeah it’s a at least like a fun get them in the gymm on on the court together team I don’t know if Ken Whitmer is going to play the whole time if he does I give them credit for sending him um he is kind of like right on the edge right like it’s like secondy Year guys that showed enough that maybe they shouldn’t be there but also like aren’t proven studs like they can play some don’t um I I like when they do so I give them credit for kind of featuring him you know he’s the player on the promotional graphic that they’re featuring even ahead of Reed Shepard but they have fun role players too like for sure I’m still intrigued by AJ Griffin I know he’s kind of jumped around from the Hawks now of the Rockets but like I I think there’s an NBA player somewhere in there shado Wells was a guy I liked in college that I could see being like a good summer league player even if he’s never an NBA guy so I don’t know this is a fun team for sure what’s your uh projected starting lineup if you were coaching this team all right so you gotta have Reed and cam there I want Reed running the point because this will be sort of your first look at that so you got Reed at the one I’m probably throwing Mike miles in at the two I want to see what he can do he’s someone who I don’t really know like did he get drafted was he a second round pick I don’t think so but I could be wrong I feel like he was a sneaky NBA roster guy I don’t know I loved his game at at TCU and want him to get a shot uh yeah he went undrafted played this past year with the Texas Legends but I’m putting him at the two let’s see what you got in AJ Griffin at the three cam Whitmore at the four and then get infal Dante just the man in the middle swatting shots grabbing boards finishing lobs from from Reed Shepard I like that yeah I think the non-negotiables are Shephard Whitmore uh Dante at the FES probably a non-negotiable I would start the Duke Duo though I would do Griffin and Kels uh I just I fall in love with teammates that are reunited in summer league that’s fun for me uh I don’t know if I believe in either of those guys anymore though but like it I want to see what Trevor ke’s body is looking like right now you know yeah Kels is the player who all throughout that his one year at Duke he I thought that there was something there he looked like I mean Duke is obviously a very good track record of wings even if they’re not Stars sticking around in the league for anywhere from like seven to 10 years you look at Gary Trent Jr as a midc round pick six years ago and he’s about to get I mean he’s still getting big contracts and everything and I I sort of thought Keels could follow that same path but really hasn’t get gotten anywhere close to getting rotation minutes it it sort of feels like it’s a big summer for him going into his third year in the league it’s I’m guessing he didn’t really Envision himself playing in summer league and probably Griffin either so maybe there’s a little extra motivation for those guys if they get their their opportunity but yeah that’s those will be two of the more interesting players on this roster to see how it shakes out yeah 100% um this is sad because there’s they’re not really a Hudak guy on this team for me the only Hudak guy I have is Nate Williams Hudak guy but he’s played for the Rockets before I know that I just I don’t know who he is I have no idea who Nate Williams is I’m he played for the Rockets I knew he was on the team last year a little bit um he really yeah I think he played like five games total or maybe maybe more than that but oh it’s Jan Williams is it yeah the one who played at Buffalo he just he rebranded from G Nathan to Nate that’s an insane mve move that’s disgusting I don’t like that at all I don’t like that either not good I feel like you have some I was just going to say you have some fun tweener Wings who were like the dudes who were 65 but were basically played power forwards in college with him and Nate Hinton and Germaine Samuels that’s uh that’s a kind of a bit of a fun Dynamic like those dudes probably don’t have the size to stick in the league but maybe they can I mean they were all stat stuffers in college so I know maybe show out a little bit at minimum it’s a team you’re excited to watch do you think Shephard’s going to be good he’s going to have one game where I bet he shoots like two for 11 from three and everybody’s questioning if that efficiency that he showed at Kentucky was just a blip and this is who he really is but I bet he has at least two good performances before they shut him down okay what’s your what’s let me hear yours what’s your prediction on that I don’t think he’s a summer league guy at all that’s my read uh but also I think when cart and I did this cart talked me into to him being a summer league star and I agreed but it felt really icky at the time now that it’s a couple days later I I think if he’s good he’s a good NBA game guy I don’t think he’s a good summer league ISO ball guy I’m kind of with Carter I think he’s going to have a game because you know what sold me on Reed as a draft prospect when we were doing our breakdowns sponsored by NBA 2K labs for the leading up to the draft and everything Reed had some there was a lot more dynamism to his shot creation and shooting than I initially realized to where I wouldn’t be that surprised if he at least has one game where he just spazzes and gives gives some team buckets and it’s like oh wow we didn’t realize Reed had this in his bag it could happen I just don’t I don’t view that as this game at all like I feel like he he’s the guy who wants to throw like the no look oops and I don’t know that no look oops work in summer league right it’s just like ISO contested twos I’ve never seen Reed Shepard take an ISO contested two because he’s too smart to do that but that’s the whole summer league game so like this feels like it’s going to be a lot of like Reed Shepard stands in the corner and watches cam Whitmore take ISO contested to and if that happens I’ll be sad but I’ll still watch because this is a very talented group car you know what I love about you that I’m handsome you’re reliable I can count on you you know honestly you remind me of Aaron Henry a little bit remember when like you know their back was against the wall nothing was going right and man just showed up every day he didn’t make excuses there
