This FIRED UP Sixers Fans…

the Salt Lake City summer league is now in the books I’m recording this video shortly before game three but I do want to dive into what went down in game two as Nick Nur joined the broadcast and revealed a little bit about this Sixers team that should have Sixers fans fired up so I want to dive into each one of those quotes as well as a little bit about the culture that Nick neris is already beginning to instill on this team and what that truly means but to dive into specifically what he alluded to on the broadcast I want to start with this quote here that Nick nuris on the broadcast with the Sixers G Grizzly Summer League game was asked about Paul George he talked about George slotting in between maxian and beid but also mentioned the UB Martin and Drummond signings quote right now we feel like we’re much better than a year ago and it was not just that about the team concept and first off I’m absolutely with Nick nurys and agree with his point he talked a lot about the fit of this team how Paul George is a perfect link between Tyrese Maxi and Joel embiid that is truly the best way to build a big three that if you’re picking this from any combination of basketball players you want a true big man a true wing and a True Guard which you check all three boxes in this Trio the best Trio in the NBA that the Sixers have managed to construct and one of the guys specifically that he went to detail on was Tyrese Maxi here now we know that Maxi received his payday as well was honored in the proper way by the Sixers organization which was an awesome moment for Tyrese Maxi and nurse has a little bit to say about Maxi specifically to get into this quote he said quote I don’t think Tyrese Maxi is anywhere near his ceiling he’s still figuring out all the nuances of the game tremendous person such a good player but a better person and that is something that I think we forget in this conversation that Tyrese Maxi is 24 years old he’s a guy who has not even reached his basketball Prime yet and is ascending at a rate that we truly have not seen before I mean I’m seriously talking about a guy who the knock on him coming out of college was that he was not a good enough perimeter shooter Flash Forward two seasons in the NBA and he’s top five and three-point percentage across the entire league that type of turnaround does not happen now is it fair to assess that maybe he just shot a little poorly than is actually the case in college obviously was a short in season with the co going on and shutting down the NCA tournament all these factors I know this isn’t exactly replicating the growth that he did show as basketball player I think he was far better than the numbers showed even in college but the point being he has a work rate and a dedication to getting better that it just infectious to a team and you’re seeing the results in Maxi that 1% better everyday mindset that he holds is huge for installing a culture in a franchise and you just straight up see the results on a kid that is just willing to get better in every single way and now speaking of getting better Nick nurse talked a little bit about the concept of the NBA evolving and what is the best fit it was an interesting question that was asked his way just talked about with the modern NBA what direction do you see things going that there is much less or much more positionist basketball there’s a bunch of just directions and changes to the style of the game and what direction he thinks it was heading and I really liked Nick nurse’s answer here so his main quote he said I really think the spacing and having five guys out there that can shoot on the perimeter to make it almost impossible to send it two guys was the the bulk of his quote there but to give the full quote he says I really think that spacing and having five guys out there that could shoot on the perimeter to me to make it almost impossible to send two guys I mean I think there’s been a lot of double teaming a lot of Zone all those kind of things when you have so many shooters out there it’s hard to play anything right so it comes down to toughness desire making extra efforts challenging shots and limiting the glass I think one of the biggest things that changed is offensive rebounding man people are sending everybody to the offensive glass right now and obviously these Sixers know this better than anyone and that was the primary reason in which they were sent packing by the New York Knicks and still an issue that I would like them to address it a little better now granted they do have a guy named uh Andre Drummond right here who will make an impact on that with his 8.4 points per game and 9.0 rebounds per game last year a guy who ranked in the first percentile in both offensive and defensive rebounding percentage last season or the 100th percentile I’m sorry the best of anyone in the NBA in that specific category last year so he certainly will help but I do in the starting lineup there is still some upgrades that could be used as a guy who is a monster on the rebounds would be a nice option to have but the players that this Sixers team did add is tough to complain about and take a look at this roster as it currently stands there is of course Joel embiid on his max contract making 51 million Paul George starting at 49 mil on his max Tyrese Maxi starting at 35 million on his max which of course that has to do with the length of time you’ve been in the league and the accomplishments that you do have to set that number there but looking Beyond Caleb Martin Kelly UB Andre Drummond Jared McCain who has looked pretty impressive so far in summer league and I cannot wait to watch more of them in Las Vegas Eric Gordon who was officially introduced today Ricky Council the fourth and Justin Edwards there not a bad start to the roster now there’s still moves to be made that this roster needs to be filled out more rotational pieces to add but I think Nick nuris has become a part of the attraction and there are a number of guys who have given him credit Kelly UB crediting him as the best coach that he has had obviously we know some of these Raptors players the Jeff dton the Kyle Lowry’s of the world that have come to this but Caleb Martin had an interesting quote at his presser that I did think was relevant to bring up he said quote Kyle Larry is like one of my big big brothers right now anywhere Kyle fits I know I’ll fit he loves it here he loves playing for Nick so I think I’ll fit in for sure that was specifically asked about Nick nurse’s system there uh Eric Gordon his entry press conference today was asked about it and basically said How It Was a no-brainer that he wanted to play for Nick Nur and come to Philadelphia talked about the scheme and believes he can fit as a switchable guy who can guard big men even when he’s asked despite being just around 6’3 there and showed him more appreciation for Nick nurse now we know the track record that this guy has won at every single level he’s gone he won a championship at the NBA level in just his first season as a head coach with the Toronto Raptors he’s won in England he’s won over in Europe at a ton of different places in the G League the guy has showed success at every level and he truly does have a level of basketball intelligence that is really cool to see from the intricate defensive systems that they do have I mean I don’t know if this is a nick decision but the Sixers have played almost well through the first two games exclusively zone defense in the summer league which I just straight up have never seen before from any team so I don’t know what the deal is there I’m honestly not in favor of that one as I’d like to see these guys at least mix it up or play some manto man I want to see what guys like Jared McCain can do when they have a guy that say yo go stop him but the point being Innovation is going to be something that this organization leans on into and both Daryl M and Nick nuris are at the Forefront of those conversations and Paul George himself was on his podcast speaking about Nick nuris asked about it and he brought up the story of we all remember the legendary Kelly UB moment of him calling every single ref the b word and even their family members down to the grandma after a Miss call that cost him the game that happened against the Los Angeles Clippers so Paul George watched that firsthand he mentioned he thought Kelly was funny and he loved the passion from Nick nurse cuz you know what the Sixers were in the right and if they had gotten the win for that game if that game was called properly we may be talking about a different path to the playoffs maybe not a meeting with the New York Knicks and who knows what else in history would change at that point but the point being I love that Nick Nur showed that passion even without knowing any of those circumstances that this was just a random weekday game and nurse was still giving the referee the business and Paul George talked about how you can see that fire you can see that passion in it and I’m a big fan of that this isn’t Doc Rivers you know just wandering up the sideline barely moving around limpin just telling him to go faster or go faster that which was his go-to on that it is a guy who actually has a hand in improving the game is willing to think outside the box and I will take pound-for-pound over any other coach in the league when talking about the x’s and O there’s other good ones out there the Eric spoler the world Greg papovich can’t fit about forget about even Steve Curr and a number of other coaches as well but I do think Nick nurse is the right guy for the job now when speaking about how much better this Sixers team has got there’s two guys in particular that I do want to bring up we know that Kelly UB came back we know a couple of these other additions the familiarity of Andre Drummond and the impact from a role standpoint that he can make but the two difference makers for the Sixers team are pretty CLA it’s Paul George once again who’s coming off a season which he averaged 22.6 points per game 5.2 rebounds 3.5 assists shot 41.3% from me on the three-point arc on 7.9 three-point attempts per game also 45.7% on Corner threes which I think he’ll get more of a look there and also it’s Caleb Martin it’s this guy himself who will play a far larger role than many people are expecting the 28-year-old averaged 10 points 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists last year the dude is an absolute gamer he’s going to bring some of that dog that we love here in Philadelphia and be that perfect link that as as uh Nick nurse speaks about this positionist basketball about not being capable of doubling that is the key to unlocking the Sixers team particularly around Joel embiid one of the issues and the difficulties of building around a center in the modern NBA is you just have to optimize your spacing and these Sixers have fallen short in that category for several years that’s why it did not work with Ben Simmons one of the reasons that’s why with Jimmy Butler when he went through a month-long period where he just refused to shoot three-pointers that it did not work then that’s why it was so frustrating how James Harden refused to take catch and shoot three-pointers that he had to get into his dribble stepback for every single long range attempt that’s why that was harmful to the Sixers offense there when you have a willing shooter like Paul George off the catch and shoot who is Elite as a catch and shooter same with Tyrese Maxi Elite as a catch and shooter Kelly UB the most confident poor shooter that I’ve ever seen that he is a guy who shoots well beyond his numbers and feels like everyone’s going in at least and Caleb Martin is a dude who also I think is better than the numbers indicate he hits timely threes which I think are important so I wouldn’t mind adding another sniper to really challenge some teams so do you really want to double down on Joel embiid but the point being these Sixers have leaned into this style in a way that should have been the case from the beginning but better late than never and I do finally feel like this team has found its identity around Joel embiid and has the talent to compete with these Eastern Conference Juggernauts and as we mentioned them I think the Sixers deserve to be right at the top of the list just as Nick nurse is saying so we will see how things happen from here from here the Sixers will be heading to Vegas summer league as well my myself very excited to take in the action from out there on the west coast check it all out and can’t wait to report back to all of you but appreciate you tuning into this video here can’t wait to see if I can line up some interviews or see what we can make out there everything that goes down but regardless the best way to stay on top of any any sort of the content that we do have chairing out is by Smashing that subscribe button drop it a like on this video and any comments you have below I cannot wait that before we get into this little Dead period before the offseason we have more basketball to get into so can’t wait to talk about it all and I be doing that next time right here on sixe thest peace

  1. If McCain can play 15-20 minutes a night and hit shots, with Ricky actually playing like he has, our depth won’t be an issue. Bona is just a nice surprise to have in reserves. Good signs in summer league so far.

  2. I mean, it's the summer league, but our guys looked pretty incredible! Gotta keep expectations on them down abit though, as they are youngins yet. The future looks good!~

  3. I'm starting to think that missing out on Dalton Knecht was a big mistake. I think his upside is a lot higher than McCains and I like his additional height at shooting guard especially for the Sixers. I mean only time will tell, but a 2 guard that can also throw it down occasionally means something. Reminds me of a more rugged Tyler Herro. I mean, I hope I'm wrong, but we'll see.

  4. McCain lost his rhythm to be missing 1/7 from the floor and mentoring Bona to played more versatile and rebounds in college
