CLEVELAND CAVALIERS VS. ORLANDO MAGIC INSTANT REACTION: Emoni Bates & Jaylon Tyson impressions

there is still a minute 45 left in whatever disgusting word you want to describe the Cav’s magic summer league debut has been I’d say it’s a game but frankly it has been anything but a game and there was no point in Waiting the final 100 seconds to hop on here and talk about some of the immediate reactions and observations from what we saw and we’ll get into it all right now on the ultimate Cavalier show [Music] what’s up guys Mikey McNuggets here GNA run through a couple immediate reaction thoughts to the Cavs summer league debut against the Orlando Magic with uh a minute 22 left on the clock the Cavs Trail 100- 74 um we’ll start with the big picture we’ll get into a few individual players this is going to only take 10 minutes uh not a whole lot to break down on the positive side here but everyone who stepped on the court for the Cleveland Cavaliers gets a giant F minus for their defensive effort uh it’s the summer league there’s no need to overreact to any of this after tonight none of this matters but we’re GNA talk about the game at hand because it did just go on and nobody played well enough defensively to give the Cavs a chance to remain undefeated going back to last season when they won the championship this time around Orlando seemingly made every three-point attempt they had they got to the will I mean they got to the cup at will and got essentially any look they wanted so from a collective Cavaliers unit perspective the uh defensive effort was not there and it’s a summer league game it doesn’t really matter but overall that was a pretty disappointing to see from the Cavs in their debut out in Vegas from an offensive standpoint uh you know I didn’t expect them to run a ton of sets it’s the summer league that’s typically just roll the ball out play hoop do what you can and we saw a bunch of that from ammani Bates uh we’ll talk about him a sec in more specifics but overall it was another pretty disappointing offensive performance because for the majority of the game they just ran a high pick and roll and said all right that’s what you’re gonna do now granted once again expectations were low for all of this it is summer league you have a minimal amount of practices these are mostly guys who will not be on the roster come the real season so how much do you expect them to be able to play together and run sets not a ton but you certainly saw the difference between Orlando and Cleveland today so no need to overreact no need to make a big deal out of any of this other than what you saw from Individual players and even that take with a grain assault because it is summer league and once again none of this good or bad is a true indication of any players’s individual performance moving forward let’s start with the Cs first round pick because I did think Jaylen Tyson was their biggest positive from today’s game missed some shots there’s no official box score I can find at the moment before the game is over so I don’t know what his actual stat line looked like but I can tell you just from the ey test of watching him on TV he looks bigger than I thought he looked more muscular than I thought and once again you’re seeing Pack 12 film he may have put on some weight in the off season but he certainly looked the part of a two3 wing the Cavs don’t have yet but hopefully he can develop into I don’t think he’s going to step in and immediately be a big- time contributor but he look at least looks toart from an athletic and physical standpoint uh he plays like he’s shot out of a cannon his energy and intensity is pretty high he showed some flashes of playmaking uh he made some silly decisions like you would expect from any rookie but he did show a couple plays here in there that made you say hey there’s something in there I’m a little more interested in he had a sequence in the first half where he had a block on one end of the court and then came down and had a nice left-handed finish in transition he had a little slip on a pick and roll action in the first half where he said a little to little or guard to guard screen uh I forget who was the ball handler but took one dribble off Tyson SLI nice bounce pass down the middle for a wide open dunk jump shot still looks a little slow the game just went final 10679 your final score the Cavs uh will not run the table like they did in last year’s summer league championship performance but it is one game it’s no need to overreact today though an ugly performance overall from the Cavs but Tyson was a promising start uh his offensive game his scoring still needs to come together but he showed the ability to create some separation he showed the strength to be able to ward off Defenders and try and get leg layups through contact in the paint and he just looked like an athlete who could hold his own on an NBA level Craig Porter Jr on the other hand for the Cavs uh not great and I like Craig a lot he’s come on ucss twice uh I have not a real personal relationship with whatsoever but we’re friendly enough that when he sees me before a game says what’s up uh you know you would expect a guy who we had hoped would be in the Cavs playoff rotation as their backup point guard last year before he got hurt would be able to kind of take control of a summer league game he’s a little older than most of these guys and today was just a bad performance his decision making his shot making I thought was both a little lackluster defensively he was a guy that last season that’s how he kind of built his reputation as a defensive stopper at least a guy who can give some resistance to opposing ball handlers it wasn’t the case today so I’m going to chalk it up to a bad performance I am not too concerned I am not too worried we’re not raise the Red Flag by any means and say uhoh Craig border ji we have to rethink whether or not this guy can contribute to the NBA rotation but not a good performance from him tonight and the guy we all want to talk about we’ll talk about in one second that’s ammani Bates one more thing on DJ Burns um he’s fun I’m not quite sure he’s an NBA athlete uh like I said earlier one game is not an indication of any individual player’s future but as fun of a storyline as DJ Burns may be I I have some serious doubts that against the Topline athleticism of FBA front courts he’ll be able to to keep up in a way that does not negate the positives he brings to the court as a playmaker and a potential scorer so he had a couple flashes he had a tip it in the first excuse me he had a tip it in the first half he had a little sweeping hook in the first half but uh he does not move great defensively let’s just put it that way so we’ll see how he improves throughout the course of the week but uh yeah did not love what I saw from DJ Burns in this one of mty Bates though the main attraction for the Cavs in the summer league we have spent all off season can Amman Bates contribute to the Cavs next year on an NBA level is he just a g-league player can he learn how to play within an offensive system is he good enough to be an ISO guy you bring Off the Bench and say hey you’re going to be our leading scorer for the second unit he led the team with 19 points according to my official uh 17 points ex excuse me to my unofficial tracking I don’t I know what the final number was but I I finished it at 17 if my numbers are correct I tried to track every possession ammani had uh as soon as he touched the ball I tried to keep track of this and according to my unofficial numbers once again these are unofficial I may have missed one if I was looking to send the text but these are pretty accurate um and I I actually they’re they’re spot out I’m just saying this was me Tracking not ESPN or everyone else so the final stats for Rani he touched the ball 29 times tonight he took 19 19 shots now those includes when he those include when he got fouled so the box score I think will only show 17 but I think he took 19 uh he made eight passes he dribbled it off his foot once and he fell down once so was 29 touches turned into 19 shot attempts eight passes one dribble and he fell down once and then he got batted around uh in terms of what ammani did he was still quick despite putting on some weight and it was pretty noticeable that hey Amman had put on at least 26 who knows the exact number he says 26 I have no reason not to believe him but he looked bigger which is a prominent and promising step in the right direction because at 170 pounds you’re goingon to have a real problem trying to defend NBA wings and bigger guards his jump shot is what it is he’s a streaky shooter he shoots with confidence he made two threes he missed a bunch but you like him shooting those shots at least for the most part I didn’t love a couple of the shots according to my notes his 20 six touch of the game was a catch and shoot transition three in the left corner that I thought was just way too quick um he just caught it and let it fly without checking anything else he had a couple tough floaters over Tristan D Silva in the paint he had two nice passes off a pick and roll in the second quarter on his 12th touch he threw an alleyoop to Larry Nance off a pick and roll that was a great sign he also tried to thread the needle in the third quarter as part of a pick and roll with n n it wasn’t a great pass but it was a great read the pass is a little off Nance fumbled it he technically gets the turnover but I would actually say Nance is more at fault for the turnover it hit him in the hands Nance has to catch it but it was by no means a perfect pass I like the read though so those were some promising signs that maybe his playmaking has taken a step up but when you take 19 shot attempts on 29 touches and make eight passes in a game you are clearly still in the score first mentality and guess what I’m not even going to knock him for that because the Cavs are running no offense no one else could make a shot tonight he was literally the only guy out there who could create for himself and make a shot Tyson showed flashes but he was still a little passive especially early in the first half where I felt like he was getting his C legs his NBA legs under him and Craig Porter Jr uh wasn’t doing much offensively so when they got down by 20 points it essentially turned into the ammani bats go one-on-one show and what does ammani Bates do better than maybe any other skill in his bag it’s go one-on-one uh he got to his spots a few times in ways I didn’t think he was capable of last season which is a testament to the improved strength and weight he’s put on over the course of the off season I thought he got uh stonewalled once or twice and then had to turn around he threw a turnover after he drove got lost didn’t have a plan tried to kick it out he threw it into the uh the back court but overall you know ammani did what ammani does best and that is give him the ball get out the way and let him shoot he’s an ISO scorer I’m still not sure he showed us anything that would make you change your mind good or bad if you liked ammani I I think you’re going to like what you saw tonight if you didn’t like ammani I don’t think you’re gonna like what you saw tonight I I don’t think he did anything tonight to change anyone’s opinion of him in a good way or a bad way there was a pretty prototypical of manty Bates performance which is leading the Cavs in shot attempts and points so uh those are kind of the big takeaways I would say my biggest takeaway honestly was Tristan D Silva looked awesome for Orlando and I am just bummed that that was a guy planted my flag for in this draft process and he was taken two spots before the Cavs at 18 and he had two Corner threes in the first half he had 13 points multiple assists four rebounds he just looks like a dude that can play and would fit perfectly into this Cavs roster so those were kind of my takeaways from the Cavs uh pretty big disappointing loss I mean it’s a summer league who really gives a crap who wins or loses but uh it is what it is so uh you guys said ammani had 20 points I I must have missed a free throw so 19 there it is is uh I had 19 I must have missed a free throw either way let’s see what you guys say real quick uh ESP at 20 Mr Jolly says he doesn’t love Jaylen Tyson I like thr off from Jaylen tonight in terms of the um in terms of the playmaking and the ability to create shots didn’t make a ton of shots but he was uh certainly looked the athletic part Mr red pants said uh yeah Moy was not resigned his rights were not resigned so so uh yeah he’s no longer on the team escot said Who the hell’s coaching it is jordanut do not expect any plays really to be run summer league is roll it out let him play that’s it like they or uh Orlando is barely running sets either they may have one or two sets but it’s essentially a showcase to see who can play and that’s why I was so excited to see what ammani Bates can do in these situations because this fits his style of game better than it does someone like Craig Porter Jr or Luke Travers who didn’t play tonight with a sore hamstring he is expected to play later in the summer league he just wasn’t ready to go uh tonight es God says Jaylen Tyson looked good out there I think he’s gonna take a cororo spot for sure um yeah we we’ll see what happens I would not pencil that in he’s got a long way to go before uh before he’s ready to do that but overall he’s definitely showed more and I’d be more I have more positive takeaways from Tyson than I have from anyone else in tonight’s contest and it looks like Ian agrees with that all right that’s going to wrap it up we appreciate y’all tuning in the Cavs back in Action I think they play tomorrow night again uh hey let me look that up for you guys real quick I believe they play tomorrow night as their second summer league game nope they play Sunday 3:30 Sunday 3:30 against the Milwaukee Bucks is their next summer league game so make sure you guys tune in for that we’ll see you guys on Sunday peace

The Cleveland Cavaliers won’t run the table in the Las Vegas summer league again.

The Orlando Magic jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead in the Cavs SL debut as Jordan Ott’s squad had no answer for the Orlando offense.

Emoni Bates & Jaylon Tyson both were aggressive in their debuts. Tyson looked like what the Cavs had hoped from their first round pick. Bates had 9 first half points.

Tristan da Silva, the 18th overall pick by the Magic, had 13 first half points.

  1. Was hoping better from Emoni. Still forces up some shoots. Did execute a few pick and roll plays. Was disappointed on his work when his team mates took a shot. He just stands flat footed in place with his arms spread a little. Did not put his body on his man, or step towards the rim.

  2. Interesting breakdown from McNuggets. I liked Jaylon Tyson’s game today far more than Emoni’s. Tyson was cleaning glass, attacking and finishing well at the rim, also brought the ball up and got us in our sets more than I expected. Emoni did nothing but iso and take contested shots. McNuggets did say at the end he took more good things away from Tyson than anyone else but the actual breakdown didn’t really reflect that.
