everybody it’s a summertime edition of game time here from our Atlanta Studio Sam Mitchell I’m Matt Weiner good to have you with us got Olympic qualifying happening the WNBA of course happening as well there’s a lot going on right now in the basketball world but we’ll start with a second gen the most important thing of all those things of course second gen summer league debut 21 years ago it was this guy LeBron James as an 18-year-old wow starting out his pro career first in Orlando then in Boston the number one overall pick was just on his away with more than 40,000 points still ahead of him but Matt he looks different than most rookies yes he looks different yes he did that was then this is now bronny James debut is the Lakers and Kings met in San Francisco nice pull up Bron with the pull up Dalton connect their first round pick on the floor as well can’t connect on the layup there early on lot a Runway ahead of him bronny with the steel starts the break making things happen and then James man I like that the Cur I like that I feel like I’ve said that before James with the layup connect for three I think that’s what JJ Ric wants them to do yes and love the Jersey Choice Connect Four that’s pretty good I like that Sacramento up by six third quarter Kings on the run under normal circumstances you’d say Adonis arms was the story of this game cuz he had a big night arms drives sh makes the layup also one of my all-time favorite summer league names Adonis arms bronnie with the mid-range here two of nine from the field for Four Points connect thing bronie in the paint he’s got pretty good size for a guard 12 points tough shooting day off the steel it’s arms all alone how about a reverse dunk yep and then arms again he had 321 and five assists but there’s no escaping the intri surounding the 55th pick every first game that I you know step in the next level it’s it’s always some butterflies in my stomach um but as soon as the the ball tips and we go a couple down couple times down and it all goes away and I you know just playing basketball so you know it’s always going to be there but you know get through it the atmosphere it was you know more than I expected I I mean it’s it’s it’s a big game for me but I didn’t know um you know people Golden State would come in and and and R for me so that was pretty nice to see come on man that’s tough that’s tough get loose that was LeBron James of course with Team USA in Las Vegas watching his son make his son a dad LeBron isn’t that fun absolutely a dad a dad High School dad that’s it and just a dad now a teammate dad which is unprecedented in NBA history and the scrutin is going to be ridiculous the numbers were you know yeah I mean who cares it’s summer league right it’s the first game of Summer League what you see on the floor well he looks like he understands how to play obviously he knows how to move how to get things done out there on the floor the thing about it is it’s going to be how they use him are they going to make him a natural point guard are they going to try to move him to a point guard position or is he going to be a guy that comes in the game and bring defense and energy I think for his growth and development mat he needs to learn to play the point guard position and it’s going to take some time right that’s the toughest position but this play right here shows his athleticism anytime you come off a dho and shoot that floater off the glass right there that is a tough shot especially for a 61 guy so even though he’s a lot smaller than his dad he’s athletic he’s smart he understands the game it’s just going to take him some time to find his Niche he’s a point guard by Statue he’s a point guard so it’s going to take him some time you got to remember he had the the illness and then he only played really three quarters of a season at USC so he hasn’t played a lot of basketball last two years as for their number one uh first round pick I should say Dalton connect he’s a scorer that’s what he does he’s a shooter that’s what the Lakers need it’s an obvious fit oh it’s perfect look your coach is JJ R he made a living as a small shooting two guard this kid is a lot bigger but he’s just got to get comfortable moving and being shot ready like right then every time he moves he’s got to have his hands up move without the ball because he’s playing with LeBron James in ad and they’re going to find you if he can move without the ball get hisself shot ready to make shots then he would be everything the Lakers need this is the thing he’s going to have to work on learning how to shoot off the dribble but when you’re playing for the Lakers with LeBron James just get to your spots and be ready to Lock and Load if you’re playing with LeBron James wait for a pass launch be ready to shoot that’s it if you hit enough of those you get to stay on the floor man you get to stay on the floor a long time and win a lot of games and make a lot of money all true all right meanwhile also in California and Sacramento in fact hornets and the Spurs of course no Victor wanyama he’s practicing with his national team ahead of the Olympics that was Stefon Castle the number four pick leaky black pushes here for Charlotte mohamd gee with the dunk and then Nick Smith Jr finds ke and it’s an an one oh man what an athletic move Charlotte up by 8 early on how about castle going to work here can he be the future point guard for the Spurs Spurs Victor I know you got Chris Paul there for to teach him this season maybe to teach him maybe to teach somebody else but the Spurs seem to think that there is some playmaking to be unlocked for Castle that was rayquan Battle for three here’s Castle great P people understand Matt he’s only he only played one year college basketball Charlotte up by 14 at the half third quarter it’s Castle knocking down the three he had 12 points and his fast he five and a half point guard hey Mohamad uge opened some eyes for Charlotte quick dribble to the rim and then G for the big finish 21 points five boards three blocks Charlotte RS wow 97 265 so uh as far as Castle goes I mentioned the playmaking obviously won a championship is one year at Yukon best case scenario what is he for the spurts their point guard of the future you look at that size 65 and a half if he can get that shot come off screens like this and knock down shots or get into the paint and shoot those fers at 65 his bill reminds you of who drew Holliday of the Boston Celtics and his size gives him such an advantage and we’ve seen come playoff time when you got point guards 6566 that can play both ends of the ball that can switch out on larger Defenders that can get in the paint and use their sides to finish oversized then you got something special so when you look at the Spurs for their future they’re looking at a 6566 point guard that they can develop and grow with Victor and now you to your point they got Chris Paul there for one year to teach his kid and show them the ropes they got a chance San antono is slowly starting to put together the type of team to build around Victor that he’s going to need to be successful added another piece on Saturday as well we’ve got details of that later on Castle you know how this works in summer league first round picks are featured had the ball in his hands a watch just a single turn over in his debut again it’s very early days meanwhile for the Hornets they also solidify their NBA roster by agreeing to a three-year deal worth 75 million to retain miles Bridges remember Bridges missed the night and they were fired up about his appearance there and why shouldn’t they be Sam it’s a really good play he’s the same age as Paul George super productive he’s been great at the end of games particularly last season makes a lot of sense for the Sacramento gam well the leadership and his ability to score clutch baskets down the stretch he’s one of the best mid-range players that we have in the game today and then when you look at his years in San Antonio going to play for pop becoming a facilitator becoming a more complete player so when you watch Demar and I got a chance to see him early in his career in Toronto he went from being a guy a score to guy guy that can do everything on both ends of the fourth so this is a huge pickup for the Sacramento Kings California Native back in his home state and I mentioned the clutch performances he was second last season in the clutch player of the year he’s now paired with the previous season’s clutch winner in dear and fox the Kings should be way more formidable at the end of games now well they can fat out score the basketball when you add Dem Mar Rose and another guy individually that can go get Buckets and then you add him to the rest of this team de Aon and sabonis and others this team can fly out score their problem though Matt is not been offense it’s been defense so if Demar can bring that leadership and Mike Brown is going to lean on him to get these young guys to understand you don’t compete for championships unless you play defense they got the offense now they just got to bring the defense along defense got slightly better last year for Sacramento the only question on offense really for me and it’s always a question with d Rosen is the spacing particularly with sabonis being such an important part of their offense yeah and Matt they’re not going to be one of the best three-point shooting teams but at the end of the day if you get theend to get out in transition and score the way they can score it’s going to come down to their defensive possession and they don’t have to be great they just got to continue to get better at that position and the next thing they need to me they need some size they got to help some bonus out on the glass A little bit he’s an undersized Center he’s great handing the ball with the dhos and things like that LE at the league and triple doubles for a big guy but they need some more siid if they going to compete in tough Western big pick up for the Kings meanwhile International basketball was heating up Luka donic team Slovenia just outside Athens to face door my biggest thing is look at our age this is an older basketball team we got Anthony Edwards He’s probably the youngest guy here in halberton on this team but we are older team so I’m concerned about rest about minutes and just about guys not breaking down so if we can keep our team healthy we have the right mentality all these guys understand understand they got to check the ego at the door they understand they’re playing for something bigger than themselves I expect the US team to come out and play well when you got a team led by LeBron James and others I mean you said it this team is stacked and then you add The Bigs like Joel embiid I mean that’s a game changer right there but it’s going to be tough because you said it Canada is really good really good France is big long athletic with a lot of young players Spain and others this is going to be an Olympics that we’re going to have to go out and earn the gold medal this year there just some the names who were expected to participate in Paris I’m very interested in two players in particular for Team USA you mentioned one of them a moment ago and the US scored a huge Victory when they landed Joel embiid to play for the United States he could have played for France or Congo he could have played for Congo his native country and tried to qualify through uh through through qualifying to get to to Paris chose the United States what is his impact on these games it’s huge I mean you think about before he got hurt and that we love the Jer but Jan beid was playing the best basketball of anyone I mean he was unguardable Unstoppable and the thing that makes him unique for a guy of his size man we’ve SE seen him switch out onto Yannis and guards and keep them in front so not only is he the best at times offensive player he can be the best defender on the floor when you bring that to International game and you talked about it earlier the physicality yes we need that big body that’s the one thing that is problem sometimes hey man think about who we can put on the floor we can put anthon Davis and jel and beid at the 5 and four with LeBron and Kevin Durant and dein Booker think about the yeah Steph Curry think about the five I think for Steve Curry and this coach and St the toughest thing is going to be is who do you start right who plays what’s the rotation going to look like who’s going to get a lot of minutes who’s not going to get a lot of minutes because on 12 man roster everybody’s not going to play a lot of minutes every night how about Steph Curry with the short feeble line in his very first Olympics I mean the possibilities are but the M the floor is going to seem smaller when you get the international play because there’s no legal defense right so you can Zone up you can man up you
