Woj: Jalen Brunson gave up Knicks a chance to keep Knicks’ core together | NBA on ESPN

Jaylen Bronson of the New York Knicks what a season second Team all NBA was an MVP candidate 28 points per game and signed a 4year $156 million extension and that is not the Max and that was a big story yesterday broken by our Adrien War Janowski who joins us now here Court first of all welcome to Las Vegas guys good to be here with you good to be here out usually scouting talent for St Bonaventure right you know right now yeah well there’s an a tournament across the way I’ll and I’m shocked Only One telephone if you’d given me an over under I would have set it at two and a half and see where we were but uh obviously busy time the NBA never ends for you let’s get into the uh the Brunson story and exactly what he has done for the Knicks and the financial flexibility coming up well Jaylen Brunson made a decision you do not see not just in the NBA but but really you maybe in anywhere in Pro Sports especially in the era of the max contract he essentially took a four-year deal this year uh that allows the Knicks as opposed to waiting till next year when he would have been guaranteed a 113 million more next year in his free agency by doing that he allows the Knicks to stay under that second apron you hear about but to give them the the flexibility with their roster and their payroll to not just keep this team together but to be able to continue to make moves because if you go over that second apron you lose your ability to do certain kind of trades and draft picks and a lot of it and essentially brunson’s going to lose $37 million that he will not get back but he he’s eligible for extensions in three four years uh that will make back that 113 but you just don’t see players give back 40 million and listen I think it’s a lot easier for a player to do that when he when he knows what it looks like you’re not say to a player take less so we can go out and build a team around you he’s got the team around him he knows the group they just had muel Bridges we just saw Courtside he knows the group he’s trying to keep and thinks that this gives the Knicks a chance to compete for a championship for several years now it’s a great point the team is ascending and Jaylen Brunson feels it I made a joke yesterday when this topic came up I said as if they he wasn’t already beloved enough in New York and he does something like this uh talk about a little bit about what that next deal could look like though for jayen Brook well he would be eligible for a 4-year uh $323 million deal in 28 if he waits till 29 that becomes a $418 million deal if he was to wait camax then with a new television money coming in these contract numbers are going to we’re going to see a 500 million uh deal you’re going to see players making $100 million because of the revenue that’s coming in it’s shared between the players and and the league so he’s going to have the opportunity to make it back but in the prime of his career right now he gives them a chance uh to be able to keep Bridges and ogan anobi just signed a $200 million deal [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]

Adrian Wojnarowski joins Marc Kestecher and Tim Legler during the Knicks’ Summer League game to discuss Jalen Brunson agreeing to a 4-year extension with New York worth $156.5 million.

  1. Bad move by Brunson. We all understand the point, but you think as soon as you stop being a valuable asset to the Knicks, they will do you a 100 million dollar solid? Even if they win a championship, cool but personally I don't see it being worth 100 million. The odds are against them cause if these 4 years go by and they have injury woes, the east gets better, ect….people will remember this moment and it it was a bad decision. It's a gamble for sure but, 100 million is nuts

  2. Team Canada Olympic Starters:

    -SGA, Murray, Brooks, Barrett and Olynyk;

    Bench: Powell, Dort, NAW, Nembhard, Lyles, Ejim and Birch.

    Team USA Men’s Basketball starters;

    -Lebron, KD, Curry, Embiid and Tatum

    Bench: AD, Edwards, Booker, Holiday, White, Haliburton and Bam.

  3. 🚨Here We Go! This 13 July 2024 Several Premier League and Serie A clubs have signed all documents for Rio Fahmi, alfreandra dewangga, Arkhan Fikri, Beckham Putra, Ernando Ari, Ramadhan sananta loan deal to be officially confirmed soon👀

  4. If Knicks don't win or contend in NBA finals next three years. I don't see how or why the Knicks will give JB $300m contract extension. Especially if Leon Rose is not the GM by that time.

  5. Knicks shouldn’t overpay for a Towns trade, instead they should look to acquire Alphren Sengun & Walker Kessler & extend both. Sengun has a versatile offensive game while Kessler is a defensive anchor. This keeps them deep with the ability to use 2 bigs as well

  6. Mavs blew it thanks cuban. He learned from Dirk to give up a little to get a championship

  7. I don’t think Brunson is a no.1 option on a championship squad. I don’t even think he’s a no.2. He’s a great championship role player but I love the guy. I hope he proves me wrong.

  8. I was hoping as we got into this new 'apron' era of salary cap and luxury tax we would see some ballers step up and take less to make way for a team to build around them. Props to the new king of NY
