The good + the bad fromPacers summer league game 1 | Jarace Walker, Enrique Freeman, Oscar Tshiebwe
Summer League game one has come and gone what did we see from the Pacers their new players their returning players what was good what was not good we’ll dig into the all the nine guys who played on today’s bonus locked on Pacers podcast you are locked on Pacers your daily Indiana Pacers podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day what up y’all happy Saturday or Sunday or whatever weekend day you’re listening and welcome into another bonus edition of the lockdown Pacers podcast where we of course talk about the Indiana Pacers as always my name’s Tony East I cover the team for Forbes and SII and today still in Vegas time to talk about summer league game one so much from that game uh a lot of returning players and draes played in the game Dakota Matias got in there too if you listen to the preview you heard me say I expected him play as a guy with NBA level stuff although I got a lot wrong in my predictions about this summer league team at least in their first game uh some good some bad they lost in overtime they should have won at the end but Quinton Jackson missed two free throws with 1.9 seconds to go results do not matter in summer league there’s a championship game it doesn’t matter what matters is individual performances stuff we’re taking a deeper look at and that’s what we’ll do today for everyone who played uh and we could start with a good we could start with some bad there will be quite the mixture of both today I think we should start with jarus Walker who was pretty good I think and that’s noteworthy remember a lot of stuff for jarus at least in the eyes of what Ricard was talking about leading up to Summer League was not about points you know assists flashy plays whatever and that does matter like that kind of stuff is useful in showing uh a player’s progress or showing their ability to do plays that will matter in the NBA but like the underbaked part of that was conditioning physicality rebounding all sorts stuff like that that the team wanted to see from jarus Walker who finished with 23 points he had uh seven of the team’s first 12 I think he had 17 a half time six boards four assists two steals a block and eight turnovers turnovers will be a theme today there were way too many for the Pacers there were way too many for jarus Walker he had some nice passes one-handed zip into the corner to Johnny fury some high low stuff with sheway but the turnovers were a problem for him he acknowledged that after the game so he needs to clean it up um something that stood out to me personally I have notes for every player uh you physicality was something Carlile talked about and one of his very first shots he was in the lane he got by somebody he he kind of drifted into the paint and then instead of just going up strong he kind of faded on his shot and like shimmed around the guy TJ Warren esque kind of finish which is not a bad thing but with physicality being such a focus I wondered if you know there’d be any changes to that yes there was very frequently on his subsequent drives he was going through guys he was trying to draw that contact he was trying to be more of a bullet he had some dunks in traffic that he drew fouls on his higho game with sheway which we’ll get to later for Oscar was really working and that led to get him getting some finishes six free throw attempts for him was second most on the Pacers only Kendall Brown had more Kendall Brown getting to the line a lot in this game but I thought that was good from jarus to to play that way the way they wanted and in a way that makes sense right getting to the line is always a good way to score he made nine shots and five free throws uh in the game the way he was looking up the court was really interesting to me like uh our seats were on the Baseline so we can really see transition opportunities really well at these games and jarus when he would push was really looking to throw it ahead and we saw that last year some with him you know when I we you remember the season review jarus Walker episode with Kaylin Cooper we talked a lot about transition play with him and some not so great plays he made in transition where he was clearly making good processing reads but not executing very well getting a little ahead of himself in terms of recognizing the play but doing it too fast fast there was a lot more composure a lot more of him looking ahead trying to make those right reads in this game although again eight turnovers certainly a problem he’s got to clean up and some of those were some of those transition opportunities trying to get the play too quickly if he could just like 90% reel that in you know it’s a good play to be making just slow it down 10% and then make the play happen that would be good but I thought in general that was positive to see from him for a Pacers team that’s going to want him to play uh like that start of a pass to Johnny Fury in the corner for a three in the second half of this game that was really encouraging one hand zipper uh through the p through the like through the bodies of the game in the paint whatever Fury hit that three that was a really good play from jarus so a lot to like from Walker which is I think what you want to see of course if you’re the Pacers you know the reminiscent of nard last year uh in the first game with a lot of good stuff and a bunch of turnovers that had tyes hurn say nart should not be playing here um and he played Walker pretty similarly in this game to me strong defensive moments as well uh for him so good jarus walker game which is what the Pacers want to see it sounds like he’ll play in the second game we’ll see how much uh beyond that the other massive Intrigue Johnny Fury the second round pick uh in this game Kayla Cooper nail it to me this was my first note uh in for stat wise for those who didn’t see it Johnny Fury four for 11 12 points four boards one steel one turnover they won his minutes by one he was three for eight from three that’s verly solid right that’s something the Pacers will want to see is can he shoot what does that look like is that projectable um from the corners he was awesome his three ball from the corner looks really good his above the break three did not look very good that’s what kitlin noted and one of those came from that jarus pass I noted earlier he had one take to the basket that really impressed me where he he drew contact and finally like beat somebody into the lane he only made one shot inside the arc one for three inside the arc one for two from the foul line so a fine offensive game efficiency wise 12 points and 11 shots is eh but the the shooting clearly if he can get him above the break once to go would look really good he had a a great take in the second quarter that I noted right as he kind of took off to the basket and then he missed the layup but some better drives when he’s running guys off the line and yet a rougher shooting game until he got some of the ones in the corner going he air balled one he had two threes get blocked right so some some from above the breaks processing stuff he’s got to get better at in ter timing seeing when the Defenders coming all sorts of stuff like that positionally on defense he was really sound right I didn’t feel like he was overmatched even though he certainly is very skinny he’s tall um and the Nets didn’t have any like really bulky punish you kind of guys right their Forge like Keon Johnson uh in this game a lot of the time so I I thought Fury was fine uh certainly some stuff that’s very obvious for him to grow at uh but still the corner three is there would like to see him make some above the break ones next time but really the fact that he got those a couple takes where he was on the line caught it got by his man who was closing out and made a got to the rim I would like to see better finishes there but that’s progress right that’s something you want to see from him uh because it’s going to be a shorter show to wrap up the first really quick Dakota was Guy nine in this game in the rotation he only took three shots he missed both of his threes he had two points and two fouls for his only stats he didn’t do a whole ton he was just trying to make simple plays the whole game I would like to see him shoot a little more honestly he has NBA experience let it fly man I want to see if he can actually has NBA potential he’s twoway eligible in theory um but if he’s gonna be the ninth guy that’s what he’s going to be as a as a guy with NBA experience let’s get back to the Pacers guys here as we continue on into segment number two Oscar sheway was awesome Enrique Freeman did some good stuff Quinton Jackson despite me saying I thought he would do very well did not do very well let’s get to all that before we do so though we’ve got to talk about FanDuel I love sports I love sports so much I never want them to stop especially into the summertime but as this lovely weekend check out lockon rocket second saw Jackson gallon he’s out here in Vegas as well and Reed Shepard looked sick in the first Rockets Lakers game got to watch some of that after I got done with Pacers Nets and locked on Wizards as well to hear about Alex SAR I watched the number one versus number two pick match up right after Pacers Nets it’s so awesome with the connected gyms there’s just constant basketball out here if you’re a fan of the NBA you’ve got to try to get out the summer league at least once it’s a it’s a hoot um let’s get back to the Pacers here Oscar sheway man is he good at Oscar sheway things huh uh seven for 11 19 rebounds 17 points and the number that stands out the most to me because I’ve seen him rebound at this level before four assists for Oscar sheway he actually was critical of his own rebounding he felt like he let a few get away after the game but only one turnover they his minutes by six he was awesome in this game his range still right around the basket but the thing that the thing that leveled him up in this game right he’s very dominant at the things he’s very dominant at but the thing that leveled him up were these high low passes with jarus Walker and they kind of went both ways but there would there’d be a play Oscar comes up he sets a screen ball handler takes it to the wing sheway turns at the elbow seals catches turns and jerus Walker is sealing his man under the rim multiple times he she Bo just flipped it up over the defense and jar finished a dunk a layup whatever great play uh good passing from sheway who in general like him running a play like that was not something you saw T from him last year like he had a lot of Dirty Work buckets he’s a great rebounder obviously but to execute at that level was certainly new from him good passing level uh that’s encouraging again still no no uh clear Direction on what the two ways are going to look like for the Pacers with sheway Jackson in the draft picks but certainly a dominant start for sheway in that race for it um he looked phenomenal he had two huge free throws in OT I think he had every Pacers point in overtime I might have that wrong they might have had two that oh jarus had two free throws at the end um so he was phenomenal in this game the Pacers best player for big stretches and the rebounding is what it is I know he’s good at that the scoring around the rim I I’ve seen him do that but the passing was new and something that expanded his game Beyond literally the circle under the basket and that was noteworthy for Oscar sheway who had a very very nice game um the other guy in that mix for the two-a will do now this is some good cop bad cop Quinton Jackson look I said it on the summer league preview so I have to to give my hand up for the L here I said I think Quinton Jackson’s gonna look really good in a summer league setting I hope you all can at least see why I said that because he got to the rim whenever he wanted now everything else was not there right um what the hope would have been and what I thought was going to happen is he like he did in the G League he’d Finish Well there he could make some nice passes he did have a few dump offs you know he’d shoot more effectively than this that just straight up did not happen really rough game for Quinton Jackson totally running the show at point guard uh he had nine turnovers and four fouls right that is way too many things there they actually won his minutes in part because of that Rim pressure leading to like easy scoop up chances for sheway on offensive rebounds three for 10 for Quinton Jackson he missed all three of his free throws he was three for three from the foul line until he got fouled with 1.9 seconds to go in a tied game and then he missed two in a row and the Pacers lost this game in overtime so way too many turnovers for the guy running the show did not finish well around the basket again three for 10 three for seven on twos even missed two clutch free throws like was fine rebounding had five assists that was actually a team high like I I hope that at least you can see why I said I thought he’d be really good in summer league like G dererk Kramer the second quarter noted like oh yeah he’s getting he’s trying to make the plays he’s getting to the rim but it it wasn’t happening at all um nine points nine turnovers five assists the final Quinton Jackson style and he’s got to be better at the turnover game he’s got to be more efficient and he’s certainly got to make a free throw uh when he has two chances in a tied game with 1.9 seconds to go really rough game for Quinton Jackson I think he will be better uh I’ll double down on what I said before even though he played bad I think he will be better in future games for the process reasons I already talked about he got to the rim he had some nice little I’m just going to dump the ball off to a big man passes in the paint but not a good game getting guy by guys then nothing um beautiful pass to sheep boy and OT for an assist that was my last no for him but to little too late didn’t even need to be in overtime uh and let’s see who should we close out this segment with I suppose we could just do the dra the the late second round picks in the final segment so let’s do Ben Shepard right now uh Ben Shepard did not have the game I thought he would his defense was really good I think actually people who were critiquing his performance online after the game were really underrating his defense like they crushed with Ben Sheard out there Pacers were plus 11 with Sheard on the floor three steals uh in the game uh you know he was really disruptive early in the game two of my first five notes were Ben Shepard he locked up somebody on the first possession he was clapping he was hyp his defense looked phenomenal right that’s what you want to see from him in this setting uh the rest of his game did not he did not you know and this is kind of I asked him this to his face at some practice like your kind of game doesn’t really dominate summer league right he went one for nine so he wasn’t finishing at room he had a few that just got stripped out of his hands right before the Finish he missed all four of his threes two boards three turnovers so the defense was awesome like him playing was certainly a positive for the Pacers they again won his minutes by 11 but the the offensive game wasn’t there in terms of you know no assist didn’t really create very much didn’t finish his plays which you’d like him to be better if you’re the Pacers obviously but um I again I don’t really think he’s the style of player that’s going to dominate summer league and he still didn’t finish enough plays I think in this game even though his defense was gamechanging certainly I think he was the best defender on the floor for the Pacers for a lot of this game I just I I think he’ll be hopeful and the team will be hopeful that he can level that up uh in their in their next one couple more guys to get to some late second rounders from recent Seasons Kendall Brown and the two guys from this year Enrique Freeman hello Enrique Freeman we’ll got talk about all those guys to close out Today’s Show back here on lockdown patri next making us your first listen today and every single day lockdown Lakers for your second listen bronnie summer league debut uh I saw him make a shot and then I left the gym and apparently he only made like two more the whole game but lock on Lakers will have a better assessment of his game d connect and much more lock on Hawks for more on top pick zachar aay in his debut as well which I only caught the tail end of but was still very fun to watch uh three more guys to get to late second rounders of recent Seasons we’ll start with Kendall Brown a returning player who did not end up starting uh we saw him in the starting jerseys when we were in Indie for practices but later on in the process like Fury got in the mix Fury ended up starting Kendall Brown was the first sub he came in for Fury very early Kendall Brown played a very nice game Kendall Brown 27 minutes in this one 19 points two boards and assist to steal two blocks only one turnover he was the only bench player with a plus and the plus minuses because he played with the starter some uh very good Kendall Brown game to me especially coming alive in the fourth quarter you’d like to see more threes go for Kendall Brown that would that’s like a very much a swing skill for someone with as much athleticism as him but something I I kind of directly asked him about this after the game because he talks about this he knows it the organization knows it he is so athletic it’s unbelievable right dude can fly dude can jump it’s fantastic but what does that translate to right can he translate that into skills with the ball well in the fourth quarter he was really using that spe athleticism to get by guys right it wasn’t like fly like they were closing out Portland he got by him like he was just beating guys which was really impressive getting to the rim and that’s why he got nine free throw attempts they kept having to foul him to stop him at the basket which if you’re a third-year player that’s what you should do so 19 points on 11 shots very efficient didn’t turn it over very much had some defensive plays in this game really nice Kendall Brown performance especially that fourth quarter takeover that looked like for a second was going to put it away I think it was him who scored the basket that put them up jerus Walker put him up double digits with a shot in the fourth and kend Bron had one that put him up like a dozen or more with an and one and I thought oh it’s over they’ve got this Kendall Brown’s looking good they’re going to win and they just completely collapsed in the final couple minutes they were up eight with 80 Seconds To Go the result doesn’t matter but Kendall Brown was not why they lost I thought he actually played pretty well and if you’re him fighting for money fighting for a contract trying to get to training camp to keep proving you belong on this team that was a good start to summer league for third-year player Kendall Brown um and R Freeman stealing the hearts of everyone he was probably the guy that I think had the the biggest compared to expectation positive game if that makes sense like some guys played well who are expected to play well returning players Etc uh Enrique Freeman his first summer league outing for the Pacers seven points five rebounds All Hustle plays all the time an assist to steal two blocks two turnovers three for four from the field Dirty Work kind of guy he was flying around he was battling in the paint and he is an awesome unbelievable top tier hype man like he gasses guys up after every play on the floor always smiling uh he just looks like a fun guy to play with and and it’s not like like ning that a just Dirty Work kind of sell short what he was actually doing right the rebounding is hustle like it’s impressive it’s like sheway in away except he’s shorter than Oscar he finished well around the basket after getting some of those rebounds he made the right passes you set good screens his defense was pretty good he had a beautiful Block in the second quarter of this game that was really impressive a lot to like about what Enrique Freeman did in this game and very clear what you know that kind of player of course hustle can’t just get you into the NBA but why you why you’d like to invest in that guy if you’re an NBA team right a lot to like personality wise a lot to like skill-wise um you know if he’s finishing like that and grabbing up boards that’s great I still think defensively he’s got to work on some POS positioning stuff defending pick and rolls defending around the rim was certainly not a strength for him in this game but a lot to like about Enrique Freeman uh in game one he came in for Oscar at Center which I also think is noteworthy if you’re thinking about the Pacers thinking about their positions with their two-way deals he was the backup five for the Pacers he looked really good I thought in this game probably again compared to expectation their best performer uh of the night even though he was not individually their best performer I’m looking forward to seeing what he does to build off of that uh in the upcoming games Newton the last guy to talk about I’m so infatuated by Tristan Newton I love big guards I love the way they can play he had some nice passes in this game four assists tied for second on the team only Quint and Jackson with more except trist duon had four assists in seven minutes of play right some really really good passes um when he came in with the second unit three of his assists I believe came in the second quarter only took one shot he had two turnovers WR some stuff clearly he needs to work on I also would like to know from a respect perspective Tristan Newton was out there and the Net’s bench every time he’d catch the ball would yell shooter shooter like his shot has respect his size really matters with these passes that were pretty effective when that bench group was clicking in the first half which was not the case the whole game but you can just see his vision how he would like to run the floor I want to see him get more chances I certainly think he will as summer league progresses and some of the the returnees pull out of play or or are pulled out of play I guess to be to be more accurate but I liked what Tristan Newton was able to do in the passing if you’re a jumbo guard who can pass I am going to be a fan of your game and Tristan Newton looked like that at Yukon at times certainly looked like that in summer league game one a very effective start for him okay let’s continue on here with some notes about the whole team before we get out of here awful shooting night for the Pacers if you’re going to look ahead to stuff that they can do better in game two four for 23 from Deep that’s horrible Johnny Fury hitting three of the Pacers four threes Kendall Brown finally hit one that that really swung their their excuse me that really kind of swung it to it wasn’t only Fury hitting the threes Pacers have got to shoot better uh Shepard can make threes jarus needs to make some threes like Dakota maias needs to make some threes that’s going to be big for the Pacers in terms of playing better also 27 turnovers this was the most summer league game of all summer league 48 total turnovers people were complaining like oh this is so bad the kings in the game right before the Pacers in the same gym had 31 turnovers this is just what summer league is I think people forget that every year somehow people forget that people get really upset about losses I don’t I just don’t think people remember what summer league truly is anyway remarkable remarkable game uh on that front for the Pacers if you don’t make threes and you turn it over that much I can’t even believe they got to overtime but that kind of says a lot about the rim pressure they had right that was my big kind of notice takeaway from this team is they didn’t they did not finish well like I’m not trying to complement their ability at The Rim by saying this but they were getting to the rim or at least getting chances at The Rim all the time and that led to their threes or that led to their their dump off passes whatever I think that is a sound strategy playing Inside Out is a good way to play when you have guys who can get to the rim and guys who can shoot from passes at The Rim so I actually don’t think process-wise in that way the Pacers were that bad but they’ve got to finish those plays they’ve got to finish the threes off of those passes there’s just a lot they have to evolve from uh from that Rim pressure but process-wise that was good it’s just there were too many turnovers there were too many Miss threes it’s a loss it doesn’t matter the Pacers play again on Sunday I’ll have another podcast here from Vegas after that game Pacers wolves Rob Dillingham on the other side for the Pacers on Sunday hope you guys enjoyed today’s a little shorter summer league action uh we also got to talk to James wisman for the first time uh and Obi toppen since he resigned so we’ll talk about that stuff uh potentially on Sunday and about summer league game two and then next week we’ll roll into shorter Recaps of the Summer League games depending on who is and is it playing talking about Team USA and Team Canada with the Pacers players next week with guests lots to get to really looking forward to all of it as we progress through the week hope you guys enjoyed today’s Sher having a wonderful weekend we’ll see you very soon

Imagine had they selected Jaylen Wells. A guy who can actually dribble and create his own shot with a high I.Q at 6'8. Had the winning putback for Grizzlies too.. Or even Bobi Klintman, who needs to improve his consistency, but is ready in every other way.. Guess I won't even bother mentioning the other's they should have selected.. I will never understand why they draft the way they do.. Everyone on their summer league roster is god awful. I'm sure they will have a better game next game.. But still, I just don't understand the picks. Furphy will never get those same %s in the NBA. I said it before, you have to be able to do more than just shoot it.. He's not creating anything and here they talked about his off ball movement.. lol that I never understood either. Didn't even have a pump fake which would have helped to not get blocked 3 time's at 3. Also takes too long to release the ball. Idk how you watch Jaylen Wells highlights and pass on that dude. He has a huge bag offensively and defensive upside.
Starting to think NBA Summer League is like the Par 3 contest at the Masters. No one has ever won the Par 3 and the Masters in the same year. So guys will purposely choke or not turn in scorecard at end of contest as to not jinx them.
I don’t think a Summer League champ has won the NBA Championship in same year. Maybe it’s bad luck….😂
Oscar's passing stood out to me. Give that guy a David West mid range shot and he's a monster.
The more I watch Jarace, the more obvious it becomes how bad of a shooter he can be.. Missed on Cam Whitmore who was the obvious choice despite his bs antics at draft time and Hendricks. I'm still holding out hope and praying Walker is better.. But he's just such an awkward fit on the floor. Looks incredibly heavy, like he's glued to the floor. Maybe in time if he slightly improves his consistency. He could probably get the best of most PF's due to his size and handle.. But that sad part is.. They signed Pascal's azz and I'm not sure Jarace can guard most SF's.. I don't see the foot speed and SF's get switched a lot onto guards and I know at his 240ish he's not keeping up with them. He's most likely always going to be insanely streaky. Because of his measurements and the more I see. The more obvious it is that he's a PF that can handle the ball a bit. Which is cool in that sense.. but is one more reason I disliked the Pascal trade.. made 0 sense for their future and development.
My concern for Jarace is his fit on the Pacers having two pf ahead of him. Not confident he can be his best at SF matchups.
I thought Jarace looked good. You can't expect this team to look cohesive. This is a bunch of guys getting thrown together and she to meet a system. Jarace looked big, fast and energetic. Turn overs…yeah. Oscar looked great. So did Freeman. Kendall was impressive as well.
Good grades for Jarace, Oscar, Enrique. Furphy was average. Sheppard was the only really disappointing thing.
I never wanna see that Jackson kid play for us again. Begging for the ball way too much and not doing nearly enough.
Team should have won, they need to learn how to close a game with confidence and execution….. Oscar look powerful and dominant on the court.. Everyone need to consistently think defense for an entire game.. Team looks great… Oscar and Freeman are defensive monsters, love it…
Jackson was abhorrent.
Also, how low your basketball IQ has to be to go for a dunk on Clownie at your 6'6? Well, that's what Sheppard tried to do. It resulted in what you're imagining right now.
Best players: Jarace, Oscar
Exceeded expectations: Freeman
Improved: Brown
Disaster: Jackson
As roster constructed now,no one on summer league will get rotation minutes
Ben sheppard still sucks
