Atlanta Hawks, Zaccharie Risacher suffer narrow loss in Summer League game; Nikola Djurisic injury

on today’s show the Hawks fall in narrow fashion in summer league on a Sunday evening there’s an injury to get to unfortunately for Atlanta a nice game from EJ lell and much more and all that is coming up you are locked on Hawks your daily Atlanta Hawks podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day Hello friends welcome to episode 1765 of the loton Hawks podcast I am your there please like this episode as well as subscribing to the podcast on that platform and setting your alerts to be uh notified when we actually have a new podcast up at the top of the show I do have to say this is the eighty year anniversary of the first episode of this podcast is I recorded on Sunday July 14th it’s been a long time lots of episodes this is again 1765 so that’s a lot of me talking but my first episode came during summer league ironically eight years ago from a hotel room on Las Vegas a summer league team of the Hawks that featur featured guys like Eddie tares and Isaiah cordinier and de B and tan Prince Etc also it was two weeks after the Hawks signed Dwight Howard so a lot has changed since then but I appreciate everybody listening I know a handful of you might have listened to every single show that’d be pretty crazy but I appreciate all the support and a fun little commemoration on this anniversary of the podcast but with that out of the way plenty to get to on the show today including and I would think especially and we’ll focus heavily on a 79 to 76 loss for the Hawks in Las Vegas a game I was at it was the most summer league game of the year basically I watched a lot of basketball in the last three days out in Las Vegas and this is probably the most on brand Summer League game it was sloppy it was low scoring it was competitive guys were playing hard the entire way there was some good defensive moments it was not the most wellplayed game in the world but certainly uh it was close that kind of added to it uh only a handful of teams all weekend so far through three full days in Las Vegas have scored in the 70s and both these teams did in fact the Hawks probably should have set a new um Vegas low in in scoring the previous low was 74 points by the Pelicans on Friday the Hawks had below that until like the final seconds there was some fouls and some garbage Time stuff um to get over that line but uh this is not a high scoring game to be sure it was definitely defense focused not the great offense that you might imagine in this spot but anyway big picture uh as always always always with regard to Summer League the score doesn’t matter that much the Hawks had an injury that we’ll get to in a second with with Nicole jerse uch I thought re showed some signs and that’s kind of all you were looking for as the main thing a big game from EJ Odell in this spot the newly acquired bench guy from the from the Pelicans trade of the Murray trade he’s on a guaranteed contract former Ohio State standout so he actually had a big game in this one um M had some moments as well so we’ll get into kind of the individual stuff in a second as we would later on in the podcast kind of go player by player but in the meantime some observations throughout this one and there is plenty to get to so I’ll go back to the top here um it was kind of a hilariously rough start let’s just say the Hawks allowed a dunk on the opening tip and then had a shot clock violation on offense on the next possession That Was Then followed by three consecutive turnovers to start the game on offense so that speaks for itself you don’t want you want actually get shots up rather than have them not get up at that point in time um in fact the Haw had six turnovers and only three shooting possessions in the first three and a half minutes of this game so six turnovers in three and a half minutes is already rough um they did slow down on the turnover side a little bit along the way that was nice to see but it was certainly a plague in the opening minutes of this contest set in the tone for the rest of the game in fact Atlanta was down as many as 11 points in the early going and if not for that rough start they probably win this game but that actually kind of plagued them throughout this game um I don’t think they actually ran a single thing for ret offensively before the first timeout in the middle of the first quarter which I didn’t love necessarily um they did come out of the stoppage of that timeout and run a play for him right away because I’m sure somebody on the bench was like Hey probably time to involve that overall pick at some point in time but after about eight minutes of play the Spurs had taken 14 shots and the Spurs had sorry sorry the Hawks taken six shots so you’re going to be in a tough spot if that’s the case given the rebounding and turnover issues at the outset they really were not getting any kind of Rim pressure um most of the game actually lots of jump shots for the Hawks settles a little bit worse in the first half in the second but bad process I think at times offensively in this game I should at least credit the Spurs they played good defense Al along the way as to the hawk I thought but some of that was also just some bad summer league offense by all sides uh rotationally there were not huge surprises but something that was notable so the number one thing here is that Nicole jurich the hawk second round pick that they like quite a bit um hobbled the locker room late in the first quarter of the game with what the Hawks later ruled him out with a left foot injury that’s all we know is it’s it’s left foot they didn’t say it was an ankle or what kind of foot injury it is but he was in a walking boot after the game um Ronald Norwood the hawk summer league coach was actually asked about that he didn’t really give an answer there’s no no formal update it would not surprise me if he’s done for the week I would just say that now if he played again I wouldn’t be shocked either I couldn’t really tell when it happened or how it happened or anything like that but he did suffer that footage or he was ruled out for seven minutes of the game so obviously he didn’t play that well I didn’t think on Friday but he’s one of the guys that Hawks fans I’m sure are watching closely this week so that took a little bit of luster out of things especially with Kobe buffin already out so two of the more prominent backourt players on this summer league team are now out at least for this game Kobe’s out for the whole week and maybe Jers will join him along the way even before that though the Hawks actually had Keat and Wallace as the first sub along with along with EJ Odell Wallace if you missed it on the show on Friday um agreed to a two-way contract from the Hawks the Hawks to this point have not announced that yet they don’t really have to do that that’s when reported and confirmed so that’s going to be happening but he didn’t start this game they stay with the lineup of um Ray and jurisich in the back cour together a lot was made of of Rec playing the two he’s really the two and three spots in the Hawks offense are really interchangeable so I wouldn’t make too much of that but the Hawks have gone without a point guard a lot and in general it hasn’t worked um I wonder um if they would have changed this anyway I was kind of surprised that they actually started jur s a point guard in this game they’ve just been very visibly better with either Wallace or even Jal Joiner at the point guard spot in the first two games but that’s what happened in this game uh rotationally I thought Wallace scored his first his first possession of the game Liddell had a really big game including a tip dunk later in the first quarter he was very physical throughout this one they did play a little bit with Wallis and Joiner together in a small backourt but most of those guys were kind of interchanged um in fact yeah I’m looking at it now um Wallace played 25 minutes Jord played 14 minutes and that’s basically yes they only overlapped a little bit for the most part they were just the point guards after uh jur went down they actually got Moses wood on the court in this game he was the first player outside of what the pro ejected ninan group was to actually appear in a game and the Hawks actually gave a dnp to Miles Norris now I referenced this on Friday but my friend GL Willis of ATL 29 was going uh was going crazy in a good way about miles Norris’s play on Friday I thought he was actually quite good um this is not out of the ordinary they were not benching miles Norris usually there is a plan that the Hawks wouldn’t tell us about ahead of time but as to how they’re goingon to kind of parse out minutes for some guys deeper down the roster um that’s usually what happens there so DMP didn’t Shock Me necessarily obviously I think that he is clearly better than Moses wood but different roles all that fun stuff but wood if you missed it in the pre- summer league process uh is a rookie actually coming out of Washington at the end of his college career kind of a wing shooter although he was 0 for three from the field in this game um and then again I mentioned before but jerich hobbled to the locker room and then he was ruled out for the rest of the game this is not about the game but before we actually get to some more takeaways from second half Etc Trey young was Courtside for this game in Las Vegas I’ve gotten questions about this quite bit in the last couple of weeks Trey’s kind of gone dark a little bit on social media he’s not really talked about the Hawks in particular on social Trey of course has his another day another opportunity series of TW theas every single day but he’s not really talked much about the Hawks at all this summer which has gotten a lot of attention but the fact that a he showed up to this one which is notable uh B he did an interview on ESPN talked pretty extensively about reee calling him talented and smart and makes the right reads quote he’s going to be really good in this league end quote they’ve been texting back and forth according to what Trey said about Reese so obviously he’s been talking to those to those guys jurich I think revealed at some point that he’s talked to Trey so he’s been involved a reminder that social media in particular for players is not all that you would uh Bank on there and also Trey not so subtly wore a hat that said iatl on it so uh I’m sure that was maybe to D things down a little bit I’ve never worried about Trey not being vocal like he’s not that kind of guy necessarily but I know people were asking about this maybe that’s slows down after this after he makes the appearance does the interview he was obviously invested in the game reacting he was on the court a couple times like kind of you know doing Courtside stuff so there you go he made an appearance and hopefully that will close things down a little bit from there all right we’ll have more coming up on my observations takeaways at the end of the podcast some player evaluations and some sound from EJ Lidell as well as Ronald nored but first and we from our partners on today’s podcast sportsing partner of Major League Baseball all right so we touch on the the early portion of this game the Hawks were actually only down by four in the first quarter despite being down by 11 early in the game it felt worse than that throughout and it was very very close the rest of the game basically it was within a couple possessions both ways for almost the entirety of the last three quarters of his contest um ret had this great stretch early in the second quarter where we actually buried a three and then he dropped a really nice lob dunk nice lob four a dunk I should say and then he made a Defender fall and that caused an absolute explosion from the Hawks bench when he actually did that he missed the shot so won’t it won’t make the rounds the same but that was a fun moment from him off the Tribble uh the Hawks were much better in second quarter I thought in general that was their best quarter on the scoreboard and also in sort of the way game actually flowed I thought Mo gate calmed down a little bit made a few threes in that quarter um they were better with a point guard on the floor which I said before which certainly worth remembering and Liddell I thought calm them down a little bit on both ends of the floor as a kind of you know more established veterany kind of guy reech had a couple buckets of the rim later in the uh first half uh he’s been looking very comfortable in that catch and finish kind of area also some some duckins some post-ups and using that length to his Advantage not the most physical guy yet obviously he is quite lanky at this point but using his size effectively and just he’s always moving which I very much appreciate about his game they were actually up by one at half time despite the early deficit but again it was close the entire way uh in the second sorry second half they started um Wallace in place of jurisdiction of pris there it was pretty scattered in the third quarter as it was most of the game couple of good passing moments from Rish I thought Liddell defensively a couple nice moments including a couple block I think he had four blocks in the game yes he did that was impressive U Jarel Joiner had this very impressive defensive sequence in the third quarter where he drew a moving screen basically all on his own it was an awesome defensive effort play the Hawks bench loved that one as well as Trey actually he reacted pretty visibly to that one and then jiner also blew up another play about a minute later he got some praise from nored after the game just for his injection of defensive energy which that was definitely evident in that sequence they were down one going in the fourth quarter they only lost third quarter by two points despite shooting the ball very poorly in the third but it was really tight the entire way they closed with Liddell and Wallace alongside ree aay Dylan Windler and moay they had opportunities late I will say a couple offensive rebounds did not did not lead to points necessarily um actually had a nice power finish to get back within two at one point in time um Mo had a couple of rough moments but he did have a steal that led to a run out in a tie game with about a minute and a half to go in in the fourth quarter um Liddell missed a little push shot the Spurs did score um probably the the biggest single shot of the game gay got caught in space against a guard and give up a a step back jump shot defitely use his size very well on that play defensively I didn’t think for Mo it wasn’t awful but just wasn’t the greatest possession in the world that didn’t end the game though because the Hawks were able to kind of scratch and Claw they were down four there late re seemed to hit his head actually in the final minute he didn’t talk after the game but he was staying he stayed in the game which is notable um gay actually had a big offensive rebound though to his credit to keep the game alive because the Hawks were down by four Rec sh missed a three and that would have been it if they didn’t get the rebound but he actually got it kicked it out to Wallace for a three to cut it down to one and I’ll go quickly now the Hawks were in scramble mode so they kind of had to foul or get a steal and they didn’t neither on the next play a lot of layup um in transition but um the Spurs did foul well anyway fast forward to the end Hawks Hawk actually down by two with six seconds to go and basically that sorry down by four um with that seconds to go it should have been over because the Spurs put it away essentially but the Spurs then fouled ret on a tippen with one second left in a four-point game the only thing this Spurs could do to maybe lose was devou in that moment and they did of course they didn’t actually win the game but the Hawks actually had a faint ch went from having zero chance to a faint chance in the end and to their credit you know Nora talked pretty extensively about the Hawks um never giving up at the end of the game basically and the way he was proud of the way they played hard and they did play hard there is a distinction to be drawn between playing hard and playing well um even in summer league but the Hawks did I thought throughout the game give really good effort they played very hard very physically I thought got to the line a bunch created some turnovers like they did the right thing they just didn’t execute on offense in this one it was very summer league as a result of that but there you go on all that so follow numbers here the Hawks shot 34.7% from the field in the game and 24% from three 10 of 41 they also missed 10 free throws in the game including three by ree that’s not great necessarily but they had 15 offive rebounds that’s a ton even know they missed a lot of shots they still a lot of rebounds um but unfortunately only had the same amount of assist 16 as turnovers 16 in the game they did create 15 turnovers defensively and hold the Spurs to 34% shooting as well so neither team shot the ball well at all as you might guess by the lows scoring but it was a true Rock fight and other than Liddell I think no one else was really efficient offensively for the Hawks yeah I’m looking at this now I think Liddell and maybe Rob Baker were the only guys that ended up with more points than shots than shooting possessions for the Hawks so not efficient necessarily across the board there but um they scratched and Claw and we’ll have more in a second on the actual player by player stuff before we get out of here though a word from our partners on today’s podcast Today’s Show is brought available to customers eligible items only exclusions apply all right we’ll do some player stuff now and then we’ll end with EJ Liddell because I talked uh not just me we all talk to him after the game um again I know this before but Moses wood played 16 minutes did not score over3 from the floor looked fine but like obviously I think it’s more of a fringe guy exhibit 10 kind of contract guy bring maybe bring him to training camp we’ll see but not really a candidate I don’t think to make the roster we’ll see uh Keem Wallace didn’t shoot the ball well in this game two of n from the floor one of five from three they have three assists was fine defensively not his best work I didn’t think on the whole but but did make a big shot late his one three that actually went down was in the last several seconds of the game uh Joiner had a great impression defensively six points three assists just really physical and aggressive defensively um over one from three but I thought he played well in his limited minutes we’ll save lell for the end jurich seven point Sorry seven minutes two turns before he left the game he’s not playing very well right now but of course the injuries is the more big thing there we’ll have that updated the Hawks will play against till Wednesday so kind of TBD on that um Rob Baker had a rough start to be sure but at 13 points six rebounds and four steals in the game was better in the second half by a lot than he was in the first half did turn the ball over four times it was by 16 in the game Windler was fine six points 12 rebounds and I I was talking to John Hollinger about this at the athletic on Twitter um I guess the ESPN broadcast which I was not watching live I was actually in the game was kind of surprised by wiler’s rebounding but Windler is a well documented very very good rebounder like he had he once had 33 rebounds I I believe it was in a g League game um so him having 12 rebounds is not a huge surprise three steals three assists I thought he played well didn’t have didn’t do a ton I like wiler I think he’s an NBA level player but we’ll see what happens with him next stepwise and then Reay 11 points five rebounds two assists he actually was only three of uh one of seven from three is not great of course three five on twos and Miss three three free throws I thought he played okay I thought he was probably a little bit better offensively on Friday and a little bit better defensively tonight but close close close um just to say a couple things here about R obviously he’s the main event right now he’s not hesitating to let it fat offense which something that um Trey said on the broadcast nored said it a few times he said it they want him to be aggressive and they should him hunting his own shot is a good idea in this setting in particular um even then I think he probably do even more I mentioned the post-ups earli but I like the postup stuff I like that way he’s always moving off the ball that’s one of the big selling points of ret is that he’s a really good off ball player and I still buy that um the passing has really played up he only had he only had two assists in the game but that was not because of his poor passing he was very good at making reads crosscourt passes it’s been pretty impressive his feel has been has been notably good for a 19-year old rookie and then rebounding the ball um just being active five rebounds in the game today but just keeping the ball alive tip stuff that happened on Friday too I’ve been impressed with all that area so I know he’s not blowing anybody away on the stat sheet 11 points I get it he wasn’t efficient in this game but I thought he play I thought he was more effective than that and he and little things have been standing out to me watching him up close in personal all right the last thing we before we get out of here is that um number one Liddell had the best game of any Hawk 22 points five rebounds four blocks he was six of 14 from the floor two of six from three and eight of 10 at the free throw line in this game um All Off the Bench he up closing the game of course but again Liddell they they acquired him in the Murray tray he is a former like I think All-American level player at at Ohio State but I want to pass along some audio so some of the questions are not loud enough to hear so I I worked around that on the um editing process just for the reason why you’ll hear the background noise these interviews are not done in a quiet place at Summer League it’s just not the way things work so I try to get the the audio of Liddell speaking is much clearer than the actual question so I’ll kind of see those up for you now but um Lauren whims the AJC asked Liddell what he’s kind of looking to do in summer league after he arrived in Atlanta and here’s what EJ had to say about that just go out there and be an effort player play my hardest um and show what I’m able to do like to stick on the NBA team any hustle players uh Defenders that’s why I tried to show out there to day um I have some lapses but I’m going to keep him better he also said he’s looking at this sort of a new opportunity after the trade and looking forward to making Atlanta his home not a huge reaction to the trade but obviously he was surprised by it he kind of said that he’s picking up the system slowly but surely is the way he said that kind of pivoted everything back to playing hard that’s been the emphasis by the way of everyone nored is uh talking about you know physicality a lot and like you know making it’s a very uh coaching cliche answer which is fine um Liddell also talked about the balance between showing what you can do individually and playing within within the system which I think everybody does in summer league that’s one of the questions about summer league always is like it’s it’s about showcasing yourself but also playing in the system which he acknowledged he talks about Rim protection uh he was asked about the four blocks and how he you know he actually said I think at one point he led the big Tenon blocks um he is limited in size for a big he’s six7 I think but he’s very physical like very strong he’s gotten physical comps to Paul Milsap obviously I’m not expecting him to be a four time Allstar like B Milsap was but physically pretty similar maybe a little bit thicker than Milsap was by the end but R prote actually is the strength of his compared to what you would think at his size but just noting that and then uh he got a question from jilo Johnson about how he would describe his game to someone who’s not seen him play and here was what EJ had to say about that a dog I’m going to get it done on both ends um I’m just going to go out there and try to affect wi him um as much as possible today I mean I miss some bunnies I got scored on a couple times but I felt like my overall game was good lastly we hear Ronald nored in a second talking about Liddell after a question that he got during his availability postgame kind of about the way he’s fitting in and all that yeah I mean I think I think as far as summer league is concerned like he connects us um he does small things I mean tonight it showed up in the stats because he was getting to the free throw line I think he shot 10 free throws but he connects us with his ball movement um the ball found him back because he moves the ball for other guys and that’s what we want to see offensively so overall I thought he was really good in this game uh he’s a that’s notable to me people keep asking like what the role is going to be for him it’s too early to tell there are some minutes at backup power forward available for the Hawks right now on the current roster you’ve got maybe some down 100 minutes there behind Jaylen Johnson at the four obviously he might play some three as well as he usually has you got moay who’s not been the best I don’t think so so far through two games I didn’t talk about Mo a lot on on the over segment I’ll just say 10 points nine rebounds three assists a steal and a block for Mo he’s been overly aggressive which is not a terrible thing just a little bit uneven so far through two games but he’s in the mix and then you also have um Liddell and you have maybe Larry n who Larry Nance is more of a center he’s played like 85% of his men at Center the last two years but he’s played some four he can play a little bit four especially next to a Kong Wu so they have bodies it’s just that the clear the clarity of path there is a little bit uncertain at this point but Liddell I still think if you ask me right now I think he and Zeller are like the last two guys on the team as far as the guaranteed contracts are concerned but still Liddell is not like a Zero by any means like he’s a guy with some actual pedigree he was a highend college player the knee issue the big thing for me is that he’s got to make jump shots and he made two out of six from three in this game but it’s a hard profile I know you know that’s not his number one strength his biggest strength is is is his physicality but in the NBA with the way things work at this point in time at that position he’s got to have something else to go to offensively and I think the the three-point shots going to be a pivotal for him we’ll see but I do like him as a theoretical Prospect he isn’t he’s not super old he is cheap but um I thought he was good today wanted to share some audio because he not he’s not talked as he actually got to Atlanta so there you go on that and that’s all I have on today’s podcast the plan is between now and the game on Wednesday because the Hawks won’t play again until Wednesday two days off at summer league is a little bit surprising but that’s the way schedule broke um I’ll do it probably at least one podcast between between now and then on whatever is going on you moag questions if there is news um people keep asking me about transactions if you haven’t noticed I know not everybody watches the whole league but the entire league right now is kind of gummed up there’s not a lot going on in the league for whatever reason usually you go to summer league and like the damn breaks and like lots of stuff happens that hasn’t happened so far there’s been some signings of like guys returning to their teams but trade market is very cool right now we’ll see what happens on that V got his contract TBD so if nothing happens I’ll probably have a mailbag kind of theoretical um questions and answers episode and if not I’ll do a show between now and the game on Wednesday and then that’s that’ll be the last one I’m actually at in Las Vegas before I have to before I have to travel home but stay tuned for that and then play again on Friday I’ll be at home for that one I’ll 1. I talked myself into wanting the Hawks to sign John Wall after seeing him speaking with Jamal Crawford at summer league today, I think the hawks need another PG on the roster and I would trust him over Bufkin (especially with Bufkins injury history so far) to start for games where Trae is out. He’s also a good leader and would probably be a helpful voice next to Quinn.

Anyone who reads this what do you think?
