side as well uh demichel a a pretty light weekend for the Memphis Grizzlies they played on Friday night of course they dominated the Sacramento Kings they made a couple of runs late but Memphis was pretty clearly the better team in that contest we’ll talk more about that here in a moment but it that that Vegas schedule is so strange and I know that you really would like to be in Vegas not to put salt the wound part no but at the same time can you imagine how dangerous it would have been for you if they played on Friday and didn’t play again until Monday you would have had a free in Vegas oh I mean there’s pros to that but there’s also a lot of cons I don’t know I wouldn’t want to see you recording on Sunday night for the Monday show after a weekend on your own in Vegas I wouldn’t want my mom watching that episode either but um but yeah a lot of pros and cons to that situation but for the Grizzlies it kind of works out uh because of the fact that one you know we see we’ll talk about it more throughout the show you led with it in the opening that the they’re operating on a cautious approach with a lot of these guys as they get through summer league so having two days off like there’s no excuse like everyone that played in that last game as long as you know they didn’t leave any that game with any notable bumps and bruises which doesn’t seem to be the case uh all of them should be ready to go and then there’s another guy big giant guy who we’ll talk about a little bit later who potentially could be ready to go as well but going back to that first game Joe going to go back to something I said in that last episode and we were talking about Zack Ed and I was like look we can debate if they need him to win it but as far as these games on their schedule uh the Kings without you know Devin Carter who was their first round pick who’s out or even this game against the Mavs I don’t have any you know nice super young prospect that like just oh wow that that guy’s gonna cook the Grizzlies they don’t have that guy over there uh these are games that they should blow through the opponents it’s like they did in that first game and in that first game what we saw was what did the Kings had 30 31 turnovers like the Grizzlies hadm League record I believe the I mean man it was it was you we talked about it Joe before the summer league starting how you know these teams are gonna have all these guys that aren’t familiar with playing with each other and whatnot but that was a prime that was the case that was example a of why you don’t take too much from Summer League because you it was very clear none of those dudes been playing with each other that’s why the Grizzlies I mean they took advantage Jake lorus six steals uh Scotty Pippen Jr five Steals and as we talking about the game let’s let’s get into the individual performances a little bit uh Joe and because I want to talk to you about Jake laravia first I think that’s where we can start because we talked about a lot of the other guys a little bit more I know you mentioned it uh in passing in one of our previous segments uh about Jake laravia looked like he you know was kind of in that too good R but the 22 points was good you know I think he had like five boards you know you expect that from him he’s bigger stronger third-year guy and played you know multiple years of college basketball so you expect that six steals though he’s been now granted some of it is summer league steals that’s what I call Summer League skills some of it is just these guys aren’t used to playing with each other they’re making dumb mistakes that don’t happen in a regular season a lot but uh it’s not even just the stat sheet to me the way he is playing is it’s it’s easy to him and look I got to say this too because some people going to run with this and oh oh you know I I’m not saying in no way shape or form this will translate to you know the best version of Jake laravia ever in the regular season all I’m saying is for him to be a third year player former first round pick you wanted to see him come to summer league and look better than these dudes a lot of guys look better than guys in summer league sometimes it translates to the NBA sometimes it doesn’t because uh the NBA is going to have better athletes and the skill is going to be uh just I mean even better as well but that being said I’ve been impressed from the standpoint of this was a guy who had to come out here and look better than everyone else on the floor and he’s done just that to me John now again you’re much more in tune with the the financial intricacies of the league than me I do my best to keep up I’m a very simple man laravia is entering his third year of his contract right this is the first team option Memphis will have to make a decision on a team option around the time of training right before the season starts it’ll be it’ll be right before the season starts yep what Jake laravia has done in these first few games of summer league is I’m picking up that team option I think he is somebody that is earned especially on a roster that’s gonna continue MoneyWise to be crunched a little bit I think he has earned that number whatever it might be and we can look it up obviously but whatever that team option number is you know he was in the teens or early 20s in the first round of his draft it’s not a huge number he’s he’s an 11th man I think that’s a fair thing to say at least going into the 2024 five 2026 season I’m opting into that fourth year of his contract that’s my biggest takeaway I am much more comfortable watching him and thinking that what he is doing can translate to helping the Grizzlies with winning basketball than a guy like John Kar because of his frame because of his skill set because of how he’s taking coaching because I promise you to Michael you know this better than anybody you better believe that Taylor Jenkins and Zack kimman and the staff they said to this dude you need to show that you can create turnovers you need to show that you can be an offensive creator for yourself and others you have to add layers to your game and at this level when you’re trying to find important role end of bench rotation guys you want somebody that is coachable and is willing to do the job you’re asking them to do RAV has been in the system he is doing exactly what he’s supposed to do he’s a major reason why they dominated the Sacramento Kings in that game Scotti Pippen Jr played well Trey Json who we not gonna have a chance to talk a ton about did some good things but I I think that the biggest takeaway for me from the Sacramento game I’m not going to say that Laria shouldn’t play anymore because I think he should all right we’ll get more into that it with Zach Edy here momentarily I don’t know man because look J Wales got that one start and he looked good but I mean he’s gotten two stars but when Jake laravia is on the floor I want to see Jaylen Wells get a bigger opportunity because he’s a couple times think I would play laravia in this game tonight against the Mavs which we’ll talk about later on on and then if he does what he did against the Sacramento Kings to the Dallas Mavericks I think you could sit him second round is yeah yeah the second round is a little bit more that that would be my that would be my vote but uh you know let let let demichel and I know what you guys are thinking in the comments how are you feeling about Jake laravia maybe you know you really want to go in on Scotty Pippen Jr I feel like there’s a really good segment down the road for us to Michael you’ve been on Pippen Jr from almost the beginning to me he looks like the long-term backup you don’t need to convert him right away he’s on a multi-year two-way deal you have derck Rose one more year Rose’s contract expires Pippen slides into that spot that feels pretty natural to me um yeah so I think they have a long-term plan there which is nice whether it’s Scotty Pippen Jr maybe you want to give Trey Jimson some love let us know in the comments how you’re feeling about that Memphis dominant victory over the Sacramento Kings when we come Grizzlies since 2013 is 2012 it’s hard to keep count anymore but the point is between the two of us I think you’ll be hard pressed to find a a podcasting duo with more combined experience access to quick tangent okay and I’m gonna sound like an ignorant I’m gonna sound like an ignorant Fanboy but that’s kind of our Vibe right you’re the actual journalist and I’m the Fanboy um I play in an old man basketball pickup game okay shout out to the old man basketball league and on Friday you’d would have been proud of me to Michel we played five full court five on five games and I played every game like I’m get up and down Joe for a 37 year old fat guy I’m doing all right so at the in at the end of the fifth game we played a best of Five series my team won of course um we played a best of Five series and one of our teammates or one of our guys we were playing with rolls his ankle bad like we heard it pop all right and he you know it wasn’t like broken yeah I’ve been around enough injuries where you can kind of see that at that point knew it wasn’t broken but you heard the pop of a good sprained ankle walks it off for about five minutes we literally had like five minutes left in the game dude sucked it up as best he could he finished the game why am I telling you this story in an ignorant way comparing it to a professional athlete Zack Ed who remember never has been in a boot never has been in crutches at least that we’ve seen in public displays of information yep yep we have had Z Jason march on the record say that he wants or that Edie excuse me let me correct myself Edie wants to play terribly right he is itching to play there have been two days off now as demichel alluded to earlier in the show right there was no game Saturday no game Sunday they’ve had two full days off this should be the game and maybe it’s the last game Ed plays in Vegas but this should be the game that Zack Edy plays but I have taken a turn to negative town on this to Michael uh oh not only do I not think that Edie will play again and again I want to stress if I’m wrong and he does play tonight come in the comments and yell at me tell me how dumb I am make fun of me talk about how bald I am it’s one of those situations you’ll be happy to be wrong I’ll be happy to be wrong in this person I I want him to play Not only do I not think he will play I think at this point he should have played for Team Canada in the Olympics because then at least he would have actually competed even if he didn’t start right the Team Canada’s probably the best they’ve ever been even if he didn’t start played limited minutes that would have been more valuable to him at this point than what the Memphis Grizzlies are doing with him in summer league don’t say that you want him to focus on developing his game and being around the organization and that sort of stuff and then he tweaks his ankle and you don’t play the guy again again I want I hope I’m wrong I don’t have any inside information de Michael may have inside information he he wouldn’t tell us probably if he did knowing how sources work the point that I’m trying to make I’m very frustrated I don’t think Ed is gonna play again what say you to Michael well I don’t think uh you’re you’re too far off based with the idea that if if they’re not going to use him here then he should have just been playing with Team can because I do think that playing in the FBA tournament uh in the Olympics I mean not FEA tournament in the Olympics uh because he played in feba last year but that would have been a great opportunity for him and who knows what his role would have been I mean maybe he doesn’t start but at the end of the day he got Dwight pow in front of him so I mean he gets some minutes at least like he’d get some minutes on that team so uh yeah I I I I agree from that standpoint but at the same time I do think he’ll play again um not inside information just gut feeling based on at this point you know they’re just being very cautionary with the ankle um now how much more he plays like if he comes out here in 1555 again then okay yeah hang it up put your put your uh put your best fits on go sit on the bench for the rest of the series and cheer cheer these boys on for the rest of summer league but uh I think we see him again you know uh I I do understand why you feel that way because the Grizzlies have been led to make you feel that way over the course of the years and how they’ve handled these things not just in the summer league but uh Joe I mean you’ve been around a while you’ll remember jiren Jackson Jr this was before I was here covering the team but I you know from Memphis I I follow the Grizzlies very closely and um I remember jiren Jackson Jr was kind of frustrated you know uh that year where he missed pretty much the entire season and you know he was coming back for the playoff run and whatnot like he was frustrated because he felt like he could have been back you know a little bit sooner or or he felt like he could have been playing more uh than he was playing at that time because I know he wasn’t playing a lot uh so the Grizzlies are pretty much known for being on the cautionary side uh and and that’s kind of how they operated especially under you know the Taylor Jenkins and Zack clim era of things that’s the way it’s going and um you know what I think we still see him again but I don’t think that means we see him for the rest of Summer League you want to know why it really grinds my gears to Michael here’s why it really upsets me because everything you just said is very fair and true except for one individual except for one person on the entire team who they get compared to Wolverine right oh my gosh this guy gets hurt and then he comes back in two weeks let’s all praise the miraculous toughness of one JW Morant okay and I understand it’s the NBA and I understand that there’s Superstars this there’s narratives involved I understand that Paul George there was a recent story about uh Montes Harold and how PG said how did you talk to me you don’t talk to me that way I make more money than you like all this nonsense that I just can’t relate to because I’m a public school teacher right people were going to say who are you talking to I make more money than you I would never be allowed to speak so I can’t I can’t relate to that in any way shape or form all right I understand that that’s a different world than what I’m referencing but why I have a problem with it is it shouldn’t it be the opposite shouldn’t John Morant your Superstar the future of your franchise the guy who over the span of his time in Memphis might make close to a billion with a B dollars shouldn’t he be the one that’s walking around in bubble wrap and not the 7 foot4 300 pound rookie that’s my concern is it feels like it is maybe double standard is not the right word but I watch the way that John Morant has been treated injury-wise and it is not the same as everyone else I I’ll point out a couple things here uh along those lines uh johnar played nine games last season it’s just off the top of my head because I’m picking up what you’re put now right J played nine games last season 35 three I think is the exact number of a minutes per game that he played in just a nine game S I had people you know just going back to it I don’t think I ever really talked about it on the show but people were you know like in J’s camp like were telling me like man they were on the phone with him and like he was sweating bullets like not just you know from just you know being thrown out there in the games like that but you remember like he missed one game uh during that stretch he played nine games but it was like a 10 game stretch and he missed the game in Denver and he was sick and he played the next one in La against the Clippers but he did not look you know right close to himself but like he was going through a lot and but but the point is J was sick and they hey we we need you get out there you know throwing him out there for 35 minutes in nine games and mean it compared to up to that point in his career 32 33 minutes 32 minutes you know we used to talk about how John needed to play more we talk about how other guys the starting lineup you know Desmond Bane uh the list goes on need to play more because the way that the Grizzlies have kind of you know uh compared to Mike Boos or how he kind of you know holds his starters back a little bit I guess they play the long game or whatever the case may be but yeah um I’m getting what you’re saying but at the same time with all that being said I understand the caution with a 74300 pound guy I I I completely get it he hasn’t had that big major you know oh no type of injury up to this point knock on some wood everybody but uh at the same time you know uh we know the history with bigs and you know uh that that rolled ankle I mean we saw the Don Holmes you know uh Achilles injury sure and you know you you want to avoid those type situ now it’s a rolled ankle like it’s most common injury in basketball so I’m not I’m not trying to be you know exaggerate the situation by any means I just I understand the idea of operating from caution when you at least in my perspective you know you know how I feel about this Joe he doesn’t have to play another minute in summer league to me I know from an entertainment standpoint that is not what people want to hear but 145 and four blocks against Walker Kessler you’re not GNA play another Center as good as Walker Kesler probably so whatever but uh at the same time you know I get the need for the Reps but that’s what preseason is for that’s what training camp is for that’s what those games are going to be for us so I mean it’s whatever to me man you know if he plays cool if he doesn’t it’s not the end of the world I want to stress normally I would agree with your assessment this young man had the option to play for his country there was a a story on sports center right about Steph Curry how somehow this is like the first time I think o y because he’s been injured or whatever the case might be it’s never worked out right a free agency whatever it’s his first Olympics and it’s his last Olympics right he’s almost certainly aging out you don’t know how many other opportunities you get and as as jaded as we all can be about money as clearly I am a little bit jaded about the money aspect if you couldn’t tell from earlier in the segment the one thing that in you in uh interviews and all that sort of stuff that these dudes are almost universally agreeing upon is playing in the Olympics freaking rocks right like Carmelo Anthony loved playing in the Olympics Kevin Durant loves playing in the Olympics especially the non American players like it’s it’s super common for the non-american stars to play where the American stars is a little like haven’t seen Steph Curry for everyone in LeBron play the you know three and then he you know missed the last couple but the the non-american stars for the most part like I mean to see Luca I mean they didn’t qualify but he went from playing an NBA Finals run right managing an injury throughout that and then trying to get Slovenia into the Olympics I was like gez like I thought the Mavs were gonna say hey man look just hold him back but yeah those it means something it means a lot yeah and and I would have if it was 2025 I’m with you who cares play anymore yeah but it he could he had another option let the Michael and I know what you think in the comments do you think Edie will play again again tonight would make a lot of sense it’s not like a regular season game where you get those injury reports earlier they can just kind of show up and say yeah he’s playing or he’s not playing um we’ll talk more about it on tomorrow’s show I’m sure when we come back here on lockdown Grizzlies we’ll finish out this episode with a Mavs preview that’s kind of a do think that this is an interesting game for the exact reason that you alluded to earlier in the show partner when you look at the Dallas Mavericks roster and again I’m not going to go down it they are not as deep as this Memphis Grizzly summer league team and the continuity factor is a real thing like the sins of March and April right all the negativity all the 33 34 however many dudes it was that had to play these guys have been together for several months now in some cases that is not the case for most summer league teams this is a unique situation in Memphis that as little as summer league means it is a real opportunity for the Grizzlies to do things like force 30 turnovers if they did something similar against Dallas I would not be surprised yeah I mean this is another game where the Griz G on paper just look much better than the opponent and The Grizzlies just have this good combination of one they had multiple picks uh in this last draft so you got two guys cam Spencer has not even been one of the surprised players on the Grizzlies he’s been one of the surprised like standouts of Summer League uh so far like if you combine the Salt Lake City run with this run you talk about a guy who’s scoring the basketball well but not even just scoring you know it’s been the rebounding you know the hustle plays and whatnot it’s been the secondary playmaking you know think he’s averaging around four assists per game in that stretch and I mean the three-point shot has been as advertised uh so it’s the quality and the draft picks it’s the quality in a guy like Scotty Pippin Jr who like Jake corabia like it gets lost because he spent the first couple years a lot in the G League Scotty Pippin J junr is a third year guy so like Jake laravia uh you could say that he’s another guy who should be playing like hey I’m too good for this and in a way that’s kind of that’s kind of what he’s been given because even though he hasn’t technically had the NBA success or whatever look go look at Scotty pipman Jr’s g-league numbers uh he he puts him up he puts the points up and he did that his rookie year with the South Bay Lakers and he did it the second year with the South Bay Lakers before he ended up on the Memphis Grizzlies where he also put up some decent numbers as well so again on paper Grizzlies just look much better than their opponent I said it earlier in the show Joe but I’m looking for Jake to wrap it up at this game like go out here go do your thing uh solid 18 points give me some good efficiency uh play great defense all right Jaylen Wells cam Spencer now you’re about to get 30 minutes uh Jake L is gonna clear the way for that to happen but uh that that’s kind of where I’m at at this point uh Jake laravia separator game let’s call it that Jaylen Wells has a lot to show and I don’t need it’s it’s summer league again I I want to stress that me getting angry about Zack Edy that has more to do with the team Canada aspect it’s summer league so I’m old enough to remember Josh Selby I’m not goingon to get burned again that sort of thing I think that the the the reality for Wells is that how he performs in summer league how he does in preseason how much time is he gonna spend with the big club and how much time is there gonna be a press release or an announcement from Grizz Grizzlies PR on X talking about Jaylen Wells has been assigned to the Memphis hustle yeah right how much of that is going to occur in his first rookie season that is what’s kind of being determined because laravia looks ahead of him right now and it doesn’t seem likely at least to me he’s gonna make up that ground in a year right now he’s with Z Williams now he’s competing with John conard now he’s competing with other guys at the end of that bench and the further down the bench you go the more likely it is that you go hang out in South Haven with Cam and Trey Jimson and to a lesser extent Scotti Pippen right Scotty Pippen Jr so I I do want to see how Wells does not just tonight but for the remainder of Summer League because even when laravia gets shut down which I think will probably happen after this game even when that happens how do he how does he respond over the next several days that matters a lot in terms of his mental makeup how he takes to it we’ve seen good right the game winner obvious we’ve seen positive we’ve also seen some slippage how does that all kind of mix and mingle I’m interested in seeing and that continues tonight yeah yeah that’s a great Point uh with Jaylen Wells like you you got that one game where it was a standout game for him but it goes back to my point Joe I I always go back to this like as cool as it was to see the way those things played out in that game you know we talked about it it’s I I just I can’t overreact when I see you doing things that aren’t conducive to what you’re going to do in the regular season with a team correct and that’s why that game stands out more so than these other two games that Jaylen Wells has played because that’s the one game where his role was completely different he had the ball in his hands a little bit more he’s running pick and roll uh getting to spots like and then the first game or in Salt Lake City and the first game here uh in Vegas in both games you know the usage is down you’re you’re playing offl with Scotti Pippen Jr you’re playing off of you know the GG Jacksons and Jake laravia of the world and whatnot and your shots are few farf in between so uh that’s going to be more that’s more closely aligned to what his role with the Grizzlies is going to be so you need to see him uh become more productive offensively in those type of roles because sure you know if Jake laravia is out of the equation in a game or two and then maybe a color upper guys like if if Scotty Pippen Jr plays out wi maybe they shut him down too maybe you could Dei jro running the point guard but if that’s the case then yeah he’s probably going to put up some better numbers but uh at what at what cuse you know will that be like I want to see him play like cam Spencer cam Spencer uh is is really you can see the flow him playing alongside of these guys I want to see the same thing with Jaylen Wills absolutely I I think that’s a great Point let Michael and I know who do you want to see what do you want to see tonight maybe the remainder of Summer League because it comes and goes pretty quickly right just you blink and the week is over and you know if you’re not one of those top four or so teams you’re you’re not moving on into the a bigger green light but you know it’s very early summer league I’m not going to do too much summer league but uh but I tell you what though it looks like Kentucky guards struck again I mean at this point that’s the safest draft bet like go get one of those Kentucky guards and then you’ll be just fine man as long as they’re not playing against the Oakland Grizzlies right I’m gonna hold on to that as long as you know the Jack I always mispronounce his last name goky thank you as long as he doesn’t make nine threes on your head uh you know Reed sheper looks like he might be a future all all NBA
