“Let’s Talk Houston Rockets” – What’s your reaction to the Summer League Rockets after game no. 1?
[Music] what’s up everyone what’s up what’s up what’s up how you doing this Friday if you’re in htown and the surrounding area I hope you’re able to watch the show hope you got power electricity hope you’re cool welcome to this edition of the Houston round ball review presents Less Talk Houston Rockets I’m of course kg Chris Gardner owner of the Houston round ball review going to recap give me your thoughts on what you saw this evening as the summer league Rockets defeated the summer league Lakers 9980 in the first game of Summer League for the Rockets young fella BJ how you doing welcome welcome welcome thank you for the first comment on today’s show that Reed is him BJ is referring to and solo is referring to as well is none other than the third pick overall in the draft Mr Reed Shepard Jon going right there we talking about Reed Shepard and Jon’s going about bronny with the Lakers but uh Reed Shepard did very well even shook Dalton connect but after scoring what three points in the first half seven points in the first half Reed went to work he finished the game with 23 points scored 16 points in the second half he did a little bit of everything he stuffed that stat sheet he was seven for 10 from the floor in the second half two for four from three two deep threes one deep deep deep three three rebounds two assists one steal a block shot two turnovers and all that in the second half 16 points in 14 minutes almost 15 minutes in the second half for the game Reed 23 points in not quite 30 minutes of action nine for 17 from the floor including four for six from three four boards five assists one steal three block shots and four turnovers the only negative I’m mean picky the great move he had on dson connect he shook daon then finished with the floater he didn’t complete the three-point play he missed the free throw but it’s a hell of a move a nice move King PUK how you doing welcome glad everybody made it this Friday edition of let’s talk Houston Rockets everybody every body watching I’m I’m assuming y’all all have your lights on or you’re somewhere with electricity for those who aren’t keep in faith at some point everything will be turned on eventually here in htown and the surrounding Houston area but all of this Reed played well in summer league this pump breaks on some of this stuff but Reed’s performance just goes back to what I said on last the last let’s talk Houston Rockets why do the rockets need why did the Rockets resign Aaron holiday I I I I just don’t see it I I don’t see the point I don’t see it solo says am man outp Gonna Love Reed WK how you doing what’s up with you Big Thrill says what’s up he missed the game lights are off they’re back on for now well King po King Po’s in Chicago doesn’t live in Houston he’s in Chicago but hoping Houston gets power back jond says Aaron holiday is nothing but salary filler For an upcoming trade well let’s talk about that and what trade would you like that to be jmont king PUK says he doesn’t see Aaron holiday playing he probably be injury protection just in case like an insurance policy BJ says they got to trade Tate and holiday during the season for what toss it out there give me some ideas what would Aaron holiday and J Shante bring back what do y’all want to get in return for a trade involving those two Bobby how are you Bobby’s a a uh cougar follower as well I hope they would have got a rim protector instead of holiday WK chimes in I think some of the resigning resigning are for salary filler in potential trades agrees with jmon but y’all play GM who would y’all want who do yall want do y’all think or you have someone in mind in particular that you would like to see raell stone make a trade for that they that Rafel could obtain in a deal involving Jan Tate Aaron holiday you know and what else who else is it another person is it a third player is it a pick here and there but do y’all have someone in particular you would like to see on this Rockets well the regular season Rockets roster not not that it matters can wh more 20 points 10 rebounds four assists four steals today in the game he had three turnovers Nate Williams 17 points six boards Nate Williams and cam are they’re they’re they’re better than Sumer League hopefully they don’t they won’t play past game too this is some of the games are just they’re better than the competition you know I mean just don’t get injured there’s no point for them to play Beyond two games in summer league let’s see solo says I think we’re good at center with Adams and landelle King PUK says the only thing we are missing is a player who can guard The Freaks Like wimy porzingis Chad Etc bar isn’t there yet and he’s our longest player BJ chimes in so many spots are filled in this roster so it is tough to pinpoint who to Target WK says not sure the rockets need anyone it’s more about using cap space to add assets and continue positioning for a star down the line all right WK I’ll take your take your comment right there who was that star trading for assets you know there will be some NBA teams who are at the first apron handful might be at the second apron other teams want to avoid both aprons and would want to make a trade there we go J Mom right here star player is there the last show the star that the viewers the family members the kin Folk wanted raell to go after eventually is Devin Booker has that changed is anybody else Jon says what about trading trading for Tyler hero if green doesn’t have a great start to the season why would you do that if you’re Miami h curious but overall overall it’s game one 30 minutes of action what did you see that you liked from Reed Shepard today Bobby says expected to see a little more from AJ Griffin tonight but it is still just the first game agreed so if you’re new to the show I think andyan Brooks or Jaylen greed upgrade will be good for according to King PUK if you’re new to this show if you’re new to the Houston round ball you know part of Cassidy hub’s job is to pump up and promote summer league and a couple times during the broadcast she talked about the Rockets you know will camp with more being the reigning Summer League MVP so what big freaking deal oo o the summer league MVP and talking to cam after the end of the first quarter and Cam’s like what what did Cam say it’s all about getting better that’s what Cam said cam be matter of fact but so yeah this is summer leagues about getting better staying healthy that’s what this is about winning the the championship and being MVP so what solo says he liked Reed’s field for the game BJ said he likes Reed Reed’s Poise Terry coming chiming in from New Zealand said it’s good first showing for Reed King poop love Reed’s intelligence and defense it’s pesky again yeah his his helps side defense is good his does not give up on defense as good but he did get beat off the dribble he recovered but he got beat off the dribble my taste a little bit too much and some of those weren’t weren’t High screen he got beat off the dribble straight line beat off the dribble WK says shifting gears I don’t he doesn’t believe Mitchell is longterm in Cleveland and doesn’t believe Booker is long-term in Phoenix if they can’t compete if one of the young core can be a bonified number one Booker would be a good ad correct Cuts he’s now he’s he’s evolved from Mr 33 wins to now Mr 47 wins he’s in the building how are you doing welcome welcome welcome and oh I hey I know he got beat and I know he recovered but get getting beat is going to be an issue and he’s a rookie so it’s going to happen but that is the glaring thing that is still an issue for him and what is the young man’s name for the Lakers Tommy kusy Tommy Reed getting beat by that guy that’s not positive I mean come on now he he wasn’t getting beat off the dribble by by NBA players okay he’s getting beat off the dribble by that dude Tommy KUSI whoever that is but he recovered and that’s one thing Reed said in this intro press conference never give up on a play he won’t do that if you get beat get back in it get a deflex get a steal so he did that and I commend him for that King PUK says he’s at 50 wins says the Rockets will be the fourth or fifth best best team in the west behind the wolves Mavs and thunder maybe the Nuggets Reed has good hands yes he does he’s a smart player he’s a heady player high IQ he knows how to play those angles that’s how he gets the deflections and he reads the opponents and all those things he’s a smart player and he has some Hops and again he blocked three shots like I touched on it last show as a note as a tidbit his freshman season his only season in college he finished with more block shots than Jamal shed and Jamal shed is a noted one-on-one Defender so it’s a different kind of defense that repl solo says the Rockets will have a better record than the Warriors and the Lakers cam says what WK says cam still looked out of control on drives with and with a loose handle hopefully that gets better this year oh oh that’s why correct Cuts how you doing do you have electricity are you in town replayed well overall he showed what he he showed his skill set he showed his IQ he showed what he does well he showed he can shoot that ball as a lot of us know and believe I like to the handle the shake he had on Doon connect he didn’t finish the three-point play but it was a nice move and I’ll say this let take a sip out of my round ball review mug get you one correct Cuts folks some folks seem to be shocked that Reed could do some of the things he did as if they didn’t expect it from him and some of those folks are thinking well looking at him he can only do certain things those folks making those assumptions for the wrong reasons and you know what I’m talking about those wrong reasons oh all he can do is shoot yeah okay okay King PUK says we have three people joining a 41 win team Adams Reed and tar if we have internal development from the core 69 extra wins is not unreasonable at all I’ll pour cold water on that from a basic point of view that I’m going to say the Rockets aren’t going to sneak up on teams anymore the Rockets are not a pushover anymore people were going are going to start expecting the Rockets to win ball games let’s see how the Rockets players not the coaches the players handle higher expectations handled being a you got to watch that team now you can’t have step against them anymore let’s see how they do that that’s part of the development as well y they’re now good let’s see how they go from good to great and being winning 50 games that’s that’s great getting above that you into Elite Ro Elite so let’s slow down a little bit and see how they because a lot of folks a lot of fans still have questions about Jaylen green will he be the one the Jaylen green that we saw in March and April will he be that Jaylen Green in October November and December will Jaylen Green in Alp click in October November and December that’s a question we we have to see because jmon jmon says this but jmon and others and heck probably some folks within the Rockets organization want to are not sure what Jaylen green they’re going to get in October November and December they hope it is the one they saw in the second half of the season but if it’s not then Jaylen green probably won’t be here long term and that’s on him a new new person welcome to the family ramir Smith welcome come again don’t be a stranger welcome to the let’s talk Houston Rockets show on the Houston round ball review YouTube channel and on Twitter and on the Houston round ball review Facebook page he said Reed’s midr game reminded me of how Devon Booker’s game is solo nothing nothing we ask about this I I ask about I’ll say this I hope I I doubt I get in trouble for it before Reed’s press conference started I I asked about the practice facility and basically I was told oh yeah no no updates yet so because me and my colleagues are waiting for everything to start and amongst ourselves I asked that question we had no no answer didn’t know so I asked one of the Rockets staffers he yeah no updates yet the answer my the answer I got or that we got as a group was matter of fact yeah nothing new to share just yet okay so that’s all I know King PUK says I don’t want Jaylen to play well for half the season get a Max and then be inconsistent after putting us in a financial hole and correct cut says that’s one of the main reasons why you think we’ll stick around the high 40s as far as wins we don’t have a star now maybe jayen or Alp could turn into one but not certain 47 wins seems realistic did y’all see who the Rockets have as part of their in the same group for the NBA cup or which the NBA now is referring to as used to be known as the NBA in season tournament it is now the NBA cup that group draw results was taken before the game before the Rockets clip Lakers game here’s this here’s the results of that rocket seran West group group a along with Minnesota the Clippers Kings and the Blazers those games start you see that right there so it’s four games there you go all 30 teams have been randomly based randomly drawn into groups of five within the conference based on win loss records from the previous season beginning Tuesday November 12th and continuing through no Tuesday December 3rd each team will play Four designated group play games on cup nights one game against each opponent in its group with two games at home and two on the road eight teams will advance to The Knockout rounds the team with the best standing in group play in group play games in each of the six groups and one wild card team from each conference wild card will be the team from each conference with the best record in group play games that finished second in his group so there you go again West group a basically it was was it five pots from each conference pot one the top three records pot two records wilock record 4 through six pot Three 7-9 Pot 4 10 through 12 and then last pot 13 through 15 so that’s why you see a mix of teams there so you have team of the best record part one is part of a group and then so forth that group C could be something with the Grizzlies healthy and everything but more on that momentarily King PUK says the Rockets are the second best team in the group behind the Wolves Clips got worse doesn’t trust the Kings with the Rosen and the Blazers are yawn yeah I don’t BL there nothing right now either yeah correct Cuts I’m thinking regardless whether Jaylen or Alp could make that stardom jump or not after next season he’s predicting that Houston will be a nice destination for high quality free agents if the money’s right because it haven’t been the destination of choice in previous years for those Elite free agents and Craig cut says he’s happy to be in group a how much stock do y’all put in summer league performances Summer League at all overall mean go back to it Jon hopes Reed Shephard is in the Rookie of the Year conversation and what would that what would that entail wouldn’t that mean Reed is getting a lot of minutes WK says zero about summer league that’s where I am yeah Group C looks monstrous look at it again Group C oh that’s the that’s the East Group C in the west Denver Dallas Pelicans Golden State and Memphis boy jmon says None Jabari had a great Summer League last year didn’t necessarily translate into great sophomore year cor Cuts summer league is a nice showing of what you got but not a ton of stock agreed but Reed Shephard Reed’s not going to start so would he be in Rookie of the Year conversation all let’s let’s back up this a little bit it’s July 12th so this obviously your answers can change how many minutes do you see averaging in his rookie season solo says some league is for players trying to make NBA rosters WK Reed will be the best of the top three picks this year he looks like he is ready to contribute to winning now Jon says I think he can if he’s getting 18 minutes a night and contributing to winning basketball no I don’t no I don’t I don’t not at all I don’t think Aaron Holliday is gonna be a good locker room guy until he’s traded so no I I don’t no he shouldn’t that’s for sure WK says read 12 to 18 minutes per game solo says 15 to 20 minutes per game I think solos might be a little high more probably inclined with wk’s 12 to 18 but we’ll see but again I’m in look good very good with the select team at the point run the offense you select team you know a little bit but still well I’m in see minutes at the point point with the Rockets or where the rocket decide he’s better his strengths are better suited as a secondary ball handler it’s a nice problem to have if you’re coach e udoka correct Cuts season plan 12 minutes a game but you know it’s all for a discussion after one Summer League game Rockets you know I don’t care if Rockets go one and what is it one and four 5-0 4- one whatever don’t care and a man was assisting Cooper flag a lot Cooper Flag young fella got game you got game next next year’s draft 25 draft draft is going to be loaded loaded loaded loaded but it’s about the rockets in these closing moments of this edition of a Houston round ball review presents let’s talk Houston Rockets just wanted to recap your thoughts get your thoughts on the summer league Rockets 9980 win over the summer league Lakers Lakers Dalton connect finished with 25 points oh you had a game high 25 points nine for 18 from the floor including five for 11 from three six rebounds four assists one steal one turnover one block shot Ronnie James took 14 shots missed 11 of them in almost 27 minutes of action bronny finished three for 14 zero for eight from three it’s not a three-point just yet five rebounds no assists two Steals and three turnovers he’s more of a defensive player he’s not a shooter or score right now not in nowhere close to any of that stuff corre Cuts asks if I think Reed is a perfect fit with am in in the back hord for years to come I think it I think it could work you know they could a man could handle the better 101 offensive players for the on the other team Reed can spot up as coach udoka said in the third quarter during the broadcast if opponents go under those screens we told Reed to let it fly that’s right Let it Fly because he can shoot and he can make those shots so the adjustment will be how quickly opponents decide yeah we’re not going under these screens on read sheeper no no no we’re going to go above him we’re going to Blitz him we’re going to hedge but we are not going under these screens on Reed Shepherd so when that happens in the scotting report we’ll see what adjustments Reed makes to his game and what adjustments the coaches make to still allow Reed to maximize his skill set and his presence on the court jmon hopes AJ Griffin turns into something with the rockets and that’s you know this Brown’s ratings for ESPN so they’re overblowing and everything it was annoying ah yeah whatever I’m like please let the young man grow into himself G wi come on and that’s gonna be part of he’s going to get backlash he’s not a great shooter right now so I’m surprised he took 14 shots that surprised me that’s a lot for a guy who’s not a shooter that’s a lot um in Dante I like that signing by the Rockets organization two-way contract 611 active big man seven rebounds and and two block shots in his 15 minutes of action I like that I like his potential I like his upside for the Rockets uh CA welcome CA thank you as always for your support here on the Houston round ball review YouTube channel what do I think is a reasonable amount of time to give a player before deciding they won’t be a superstar probably his third season probably yeah probably his third season and third full season so not missing a season because of injuries third full season uh well Brony didn’t sign up for it it was thrust upon him because of who his dad is Bron’s like you know any basketball player his goal was to make it to the NBA that was his goal his goal was not to play with his dad his goal was to play in the NBA his dad’s goal ultimately now that he accomplished everything was to play with his son that wasn’t brony’s goal to play with his dad so this is all thrust upon him and I hope the Lakers get all the Feelgood stuff over with in game one of the NBA season have bronny played with LeBron that at game one he’ll put bronny in the starting lineup game one like my colleague Willie gifton said on folks talking Sports get it over with get it done get it over with and then let bronnie develop at his pace and move on oo correct cut you hard on this oh wow y’all give me your thoughts on this one folks that kind of question what what do you think that question warrants y’all know what I’m talking about solo what do y’all think that this question is Cam just a bigger version of what Josh Christopher was O oo when was Josh chrisopher a firecracker Off the Bench especially consistent one hey to how you doing brother thank you for timing in as well dare I say that Reed is already the best shooter on the rock yeah probably is yeah Jon I think I’m gonna do it anyway just once I I’ll be nice I’ll be nice and I I’ll give correct Cuts this one let me see it I gotta get into it just give him this one just one time let’s give him that one because yeah Christopher no way no no way uh but Reed Seer can shoot that thing he can shoot that rock from range and I I can Envision just him on the floor with Alp and other players of course but man you put Reed on the same side as Alp the double A coming off re I tell you that because if that double comes off Reed I’ll be kicking back out three-point bucket right there that’s a three so that’s that’s a plus that’s that’s Flo spacing yeah I like that that potential is quite promising for the low post scoring that Rockets have Nate Williams he played well Nate Williams he’s he’s too good for Su League yeah him he and Kate cam are too good for sum League you know Nate Williams may never espe with the Rockets and how deep the Rockets rotation is May Never crack the Rockets 8man rotation but he has a role in the NBA and he is better than summer league but Mo Bey thank you for chiming in appreciate it as well everybody watch it on YouTube commenting on the via the Houston Shepard once again was very solid in his not quite 30 minutes of action 9 for 17 from the floor overall four for six from three one for two from the foul line that one he missed was after he shook dalta connect and got and did not finish off the and one added four rebounds five assists one steal three block shots he did have four of the rockets 13 team turnovers Jon Isaiah Reed Shepard IRS is the tax man and he’s so he’s so such a team player and so I don’t know I’m trying to say here um what am I trying to say and I mean it as a positive he seems so down to earth you know I mean he’s thankful and that to be in the NBA he he loves playing basketball he loves playing with his teammates he appreciates the opportunity you know on and on and on his parents done a great job raising him and I did like when Cassidy hubber ask his mom about can’t be soft can’t be soft in in the shepherd household she taught Reed Reed is not a soft player he will compete on defense and I like that he won’t be he he probably never will be an elite above average on the ball Defender but he competes and that’s part of defense is wanting to compete on defense because there have been times Rockets hell even last season but especially the previous season where the Rockets did not have enough guys who wanted to compete on defense CA says looks like this roster would win summer league if they kept everyone activated I don’t think they will I think cam will be shut down after what is it Sunday he should be S shut down what is Cam you know proven but y is already a fan Rockets fan favorite we’ll see if that happens after game two if he struggles you know but he’ll be fine and again I think Lakers fans should be happy with dalson connect he was nine for 18 from the floor made five threes made some smart kick ahead passes he stuffed the stat sheet so the two first round picks were as advertised and did a little bit more so I think fans of both teams should be happy with they what they saw
