Why Klay Thompson Makes The Mavericks FAVORITES To Win The West | Mavs News & Rumors

[Music] happy Monday everybody Harrison Graham and Jeffrey cooperstein things have slowed down on the NBA free agency front obviously got the summer league going on which by the way C pretty fun uh first summer league absolutely Mavs lost by one but uh we’ll continue to keep you up to date with that but we thought we’d take today and and kind of just break down why Klay Thompson’s going to be a good fit on this team why the Mavericks made it a point to bring him to Dallas and why they could be the favorites in the western conference after acquiring him but first we want to hear from you guys will the Mavs make it back to the NBA finals if you think so hit that like button if not comment why let us know why you don’t think they will win the west and get back to the finals all right Coupe uh Klay Thompson who you know I think everybody remembers the 0 for 10 play in game and like he’s washed sure he’s not Pete clay anymore but obviously the Mavs identified him as someone who can come in and be the missing piece here I think even during the end of the playoffs and during the NBA Finals the Mavs identified what they thought their biggest need was in NBA free agency and they went out and got Klay Thompson because it was obvious that they were lacking outside shooting 31.6% from three in the finals as a team and that just isn’t good enough with Klay Thompson that number will rise at at least a few percentage points and it may be the difference between winning a couple games and losing a couple games uh so I think early on they they identified this as a need for the team and they went out and got them I did think it was interesting and obviously we even said this on the show when Nico Harrison said the top seven or eight on the team aren’t going to change like we said if if their lips are moving at that time of year they’re probably lying so I think they knew that this was the plan for a long time uh and that they needed to go get an upgrade at this spot yeah I mean I think we saw too like in the playoffs like PJ Washington shot unbelievable in the first two rounds and then not only did he fall back to Earth he actually undershot based on how he performed uh on average throughout the season especially in the finals just could not make shots Derek Jones too he wasn’t as hot as PJ was earlier in the playoffs but shot much better than that he didn’t shoot well uh you know you would expect Luca and Kyrie as your stars to Simply shoot the ball uh more effectively but when you have a marksman on the outside that probably is going to open up their looks a little bit as well uh look in today’s NBA you got to make open shots and and the Mavs just couldn’t do it and you know not only are you going to free up more spacing uh with Klay Thompson but you’re just going to make more shots cuz that’s who he is he is a shooter catch and shoot off the dribble a little bit which I saw an interesting stat the other day coup I don’t know if you threw this in here he had 116 made threes off the dribble last year so which was fourth in the NBA so I think there’s this idea that he can’t dribble and create his own shot at all and look I’m not going to say you’re going to run an offense through clay but it’s not like he’s incapable of like an occasional step back off dribble type of three like he could still do that some so um yeah I mean I I think the Mavs looked at this and say yeah is Clay still his dominant two-way player no has he lost some explosiveness yes but can he space the floor and with the way this offense is built can he be uh a key third piece offensively with the way he shoots the basketball yeah I think pretty clearly he can and he’s been healthy the last couple years which you know was a question a few years ago yeah coming off the Achilles he played 76 games last year as well so he did stay relatively healthy and I just think the Mavs lineup just looks a lot more potent with clay at the three as opposed to a Derrick Jones even a Naji Marshall who we think can will be able to shoot the three uh this next season coming off a good year he just makes them a lot deeper and when you look get the first eight on the Mavs you have these five and then you add Naji Marshall Daniel gaffard and pick your I’d say Quint Grim Quinton Grimes exactly I just think it’s a lot more potent than what they had last year and I think they improved the team after winning the Western Conference now that’s not to say uh it’s going to be an easy road back to the NBA finals by any means but I do believe that they improved themselves uh and POS positioned themselves very well to make another Deep Run in the post yeah and you think about some of the pieces too like is Kyrie going to improve at this point in his career probably not but drik Lively should I think PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford yeah they’ve been around but they’ve only been on this team for a few mon like you would think they get more comfortable and incorporated into this uh basketball team I think Naji Marshall playing in an offense uh with some Elite passers like Luca and Kyrie you would think he can be a little bit more of an offensive Force um you know Quinton gribbes I think specifically is someone who’s going to benefit playing next to Luca he said as much at the introductory press conference so you know I kind of took that initial comment from Nico Harrison is well as long as our top seven or eight improved 10 to 15% will be fine I was like ah I don’t think you can operate that way and clearly they didn’t but I do think there’s three to four guys who can improve by that 10 to 15% especially a guy like Dereck now technically Nico did say that the top seven or eight needs to improve 10 15% while adding Klay Thompson maybe it doesn’t prove your top seven or eight 15% so maybe at the end of the day Nico was telling the truth okay Nico that’s how I’ll spin that Spin Zone Coupe over here uh are the Mavs better with Klay Thompson type y for yes type in for no again if you just simplify it as much as from Tim Hardway to Klay Thompson I I I don’t see how you can’t say so um I’m going to say yes the question is are you better enough to get back to the finals and compete for a Championship uh that remains to be seen obviously subscribe to the channel our Maps coverage is not slowing down even though free agency has slowed down subscribers do it now all right other news in notes Coupe uh I mentioned summer league earlier uh it was a fun first game we’ll talk about that for a second then we can get to the uh NBA Cup group the Mavs are in in a second uh Dallas back in Action tonight yes they’re back in Action tonight against the Memphis Grizzlies I think it’ll be an game honestly you’re going to have Zack Ed playing for Memphis he elected to not play for Canada in the Olympics so he could get ready for the season there with Memphis so I think it’ll be interesting a player to watch on the Maverick side I think Jaz gortman who they signed the day before summer league started I liked what I saw from him in the first game honestly he has a little offensive game to him could be a potential two-way candidate yeah I you know some just quick rapid fire takeaways from the first game looking into the second game some interesting things I thought I thought aena he’s definitely raw offensively but he’s also a little better than I kind of thought he would be like he’s a pretty you could tell he’s athletic he’s a decent Handler he had one take with the left hand that he banked in off the glass that was nice so uh I also think he’s pretty close to being an NBA Defender right now he kind of reminds me of where like omx was last year like he’s not going to he’s not ready to play in the NBA but maybe in a year he is so you know send him back to France play a lot then come over next year um omx is a little underwhelming offensively we’ll see if that comes around I I I thought he guarded okay but offensively he didn’t really didn’t really have a game that I would have liked to see maybe tonight he he does a little better I hope they try to run the offense through him and get him some more looks but yeah it wasn’t wasn’t a great performance from omx and I wouldn’t say he exactly inspired confidence I also forget his name but that 75 guy from Old Miss he’s a legit rim protector now he’s raw you could he’s kind of just throwing his body around half the time but like I wonder if he’s someone they’d consider signing on on a two-way and just planning in Frisco because look I I think his body is going to give him some limitations absolutely but like could he be like a number three Center in a few years like could he be a you know a more of a defensive bowon type where he can’t play Heavy minutes because of how big he is but maybe he can give you 10 12 minutes down the road I don’t think it’s impossible if you have a discern a discernable NBA skill like blocking shots like that I think you’ll find your way into the league and he clearly does so I think the Mavs are going to take a hard look at him when you have siid like that and the ability to protect the rim it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the Mavs used one one of their two remaining uh two-way spots on him so we’ll we’ll see what happens with that it’ll be interesting to see a match up against edia tonight that’s for sure yeah that’s uh that’s a very good point uh all right you look to next season inseason tournament group for Dallas they got uh Denver Memphis Golden State and New Orleans uh certainly not the easiest group of all time the NBA tried to F the Mavs once again it’s no shock here but I did want to kind of have this discussion because I think we kind of on two ends of the spectrum here and let us know down in the comments as well does the NBA cup matter to you in the grand G of not really um obviously you want to win the games because it counts for the overall record but um I don’t think it matters hardly at all I mean obviously players have some incentive there’s some extra money uh involved there um you know I I’m not against it like you know I think all these people out last year like came oh this is stupid like what what’s the like I’m not that but like I’m not sitting here like I’m not circling the the uh the n Season tournament games like it is what it is I think the reason I think it matters a little bit is because it gives you a sense of maybe some high leverage high pressure games early in the season where that could pay dividends down the road now it didn’t pay dividends for the Los Angeles Lakers but who won it last year but I do think that if you play in those situations early in the season it can kind of give the coach stabs and players just an idea of what it might be like uh down the road in the postseason now we know the games aren’t going to have the same intensity and whatnot but I do think you you still want to win the games obviously because it counts towards your regular season record and if you end up making the final it’s one extra game that doesn’t bother me that much I would like to see the Mavericks win it but if they lose it I’m not going to lose sleep yeah I’m kind of in the camp of like I’m not against it I I don’t think there’s a downside to it but like it’s not appealing enough to me to like I don’t know like I’m not going to watch those games more or less now if they made the the the final game sure but like the random second game in your pool play or whatever like I don’t think that’s getting me to watch more and by the way the court thing is ridiculous just put a little just put a little cup on the court the colors it’s too much the M the Mavs didn’t even have their Court ready for last year so they didn’t get to use it I’m sure it’s been in storage for the last year so we’ll see what happens with that as well if the map somehow make it to the finals in Vegas maybe Mavericks today will make a trip out there would be sick and by Mavericks today I mean probably me because Graham won’t but I’ll be there anyways Hey listen you never know what’s going to happen we’ll see um uh big Coupe will be there that Big C will be
