basketball and hockey the sports aren’t going on quite the way we want them to but there’s still so much out there and FanDuel has something for everybody this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everyone every day all summer long visit fanduel.com to get started today’s show want to do a mailback I’m heading to Vegas in the morning I wanted to get in some last minute questions before I took off for summer league I also do want to know drop a comment what are you most interested in finding out from Summer League because I will be in Vegas from Tuesday so today as you’re listening to this I’ll be in Vegas from Tuesday afternoon until Saturday morning so comment on this YouTube video or tweet at me what kind of content are you looking for from Summer League I can’t wait to bring it to you I’m super excited to be out there but I wanted to get a mailbag in before I left and I wanted to start with the big news that we had from yesterday where Darius Garland talked to Chris Fedor of cleveland.com while out in Vegas about his future he essentially says he doesn’t want to be traded he wants to be in Cleveland everything that was floating out there earlier this off season which Prim was a report from the athletic it’s just rumors and it’s nothing to buy into so Flint bunch of numbers asks are you buying garlands I don’t want to be traded comment why or why not I am buying this I do think that Darius wants to be in Cleveland I think that he wants to be a member of the Cavs I think he wants to make it work with Donovan Mitchell I do believe those two get along I don’t think that this is some and this is a bit of a throwback reference here I don’t believe this is some Kyrie Irving Deon waiter situation that we had had uh in the early 2010s where those two I believe at one point had a press conference to tell everybody that they got along but they didn’t get along this isn’t that kind of situation I do think that Garland and Mitchell can work it out I think that and I was talking on the basketball forth I don’t believe there’s anything to be worked out personally I think that it’s all basketball stuff but I think that Darius wants to continue to grow in Cleveland I think he likes being part of this organization I think he should be pretty excited to play for ainson because I think that Kenny ainson is someone who can really help to elevate Darius Garland’s game in a way that it hasn’t been elevated and last year was a bummer for him it was a bummer for Cavs fans to watch him play if you’re a believer in Darius Garland it’s hard not to be bummed out by what last year looked like right because he went through that jaw injury there was a death in his family that really affected him he had a number of other injuries I believe he was dealing with a wrist or thumb injury early on in the season to there was a lot going on for him that caused him to have a subpar season my advice to to him too and to Cavs fans is forget about last season not as if last season doesn’t exist but don’t judge Darius Garland on it judge Darius Garland on the times before that and what he’s going to do this season because last year was a nightmare for him it was it everything that could have gone wrong essentially did so I do think that he wants to write that ship I do and the other part of the reason why I buy this what other realistic scenario or realistic situation I should say outside of Cleveland is there for Darius Garland right now where he could go and Thrive it’s hard for me to think of them there were some situations where I thought it made sense for other teams to put together trade packages for Darius Garland this off season thought San Antonio made sense well they added Chris Paul I thought Minnesota made sense well they resigned Mike Conley to an extension and they draft a point guard eighth overall I thought new Orin made sense they traded for Deonte Murray I thought the Brooklyn Nets made sense well they decided to blow it up and they want to be bad and rebuilt so there were a number of situations that I thought made sense but those situations have gone away they don’t exist anymore so I do think he wants to be in Cleveland because he wants to be in Cleveland but I also don’t think that there are exactly great options for him elsewhere either and I think that is something that has to play a part here but Flint bunch of numbers thank you for the question up next Allison Bernett says any chance Jared Allen starts at center with Evan Moy platooning Off the Bench no no chance of that I cannot fathom giving Evan Moy a Max contract extension this summer which I expect to happen I believe the Cavs are going to give him the rookie Max I think that the reason that it hasn’t gotten done probably some haggling over the fifth year option which I’m sure Moy and his Camp would like and I’m sure the Cavs would not like to give him but you don’t pay a player like that especially a player that has the potential Evan Moy still has offensively he hasn’t reached it but that potential is still there in addition to how great of a Defender he already is you don’t bring that guy off the bench not at this point in his career not when he is you know 22 years old I believe he is a starter he’s going to be a starter that’s kind of what makes this difficult is because if he plays center fulltime or at least more often I think it’d be better for him I think ultimately it’d be better for the Cavs in the long run but it’s hard to do that when you have another All-Star Center there the Cavs are in a predicament with that spot not because those guys aren’t good they’re they’re both good I think Jared Allen should have been an All-Star this past year I think Evan Mobley has All-Star team in his future but it’s a difficult situation because you got two guys that have very similar skill sets neither one of those skill sets features a great outside shot if we’re being honest or at least a willing outside shot if we’re being honest so it makes it more difficult to operate offensively defensively there’s no problems no problems at all but offensively it can make things difficult to operate but I don’t see how that that could be sold to Mo in his Camp I I just do not see how they could say hey we want to bring you off the bench and that be cool I don’t think that’s a possibility but Allison thank you very much for the question up next Finn in the land Garland Mitchell alen Mo and strew so the ideal starting lineup for the Cavaliers what do you think will look different with that group on the floor at the same time this coming season so I think there’s a couple of things obviously this is very dependent on health last year that group started 28 games together out of 82 regular season games that group started 28 of them then they started four more in the playoffs so that brings us to 32 games that that group started together that’s not a lot of time in the NBA that’s not very long at all so I do think just by having some continuity and if that group is healthier than it was last year to where someone is not always in and out of the lineup that group will look better just by virtue of playing together longer not saying they’re going to turn into the best starting five in the NBA but I think they’ll look better than they did just by being together again the other thing that I do think some loow hanging fruit here I think they’ll be faster with that lineup than they were last year I think they’ll run more um Cavs head coach Kenny ainson mentioned during his introductory press conference that it’s difficult to run with two bigs but the Cavs have two bigs that are fast that matters that is something that is absolutely worth noting because if you’ve got two bigs that are fast well makes it a little bit easier to get up and down the floor than if you’ve got two slow-footed bigs which I don’t believe the Cavs have I don’t think that’s who Jared Allen is I obviously don’t think that’s who Evan Mobley is so I think they’ll play faster there the other thing I believe Darius Garland is going to take more catch and shoot three-pointers this year that to me is a an issue with him fitting in alongside Donovan Mitchell is that Garland’s decision- making hasn’t always been quick enough for my liking and I don’t think he takes enough three-pointers off the catch because those situations are going to be there pretty frequently for Garland while playing alongside Mitchell there’s no question about that that’s something that I think um you don’t have to be some basketball Savant to realize that just because Donovan Mitchell draws so much attention so with that if he can start doing that and start taking more of those catch and shoot three-point opportunities I think that makes this group together as a whole work um I don’t think much is going to be different with Max dreu if he’s playing the three I still believe he’s better suited to be a shooting guard um but I don’t believe that’s going to be in the cards this year I I don’t think that’s going to be the case so that is what I would expect to be different next year with that group continuity matters a lot it’s hard to have all five guys start multiple years in a row the Cavs barely had it last year if they can get more than if they can get 50 games out of their starting lineup I think that might be a little a little ambitious but if they can get 50 games out of their starting lineup this year I think Cavs fans will be much better with how it plays I really do believe that got more questions I’ve got more answers want to talk about Isaac aoro his contract situation and of course we’re going to start getting into some summer league stuff straight ahead right here on lockdown Cavs Today’s Show is brought to you by eBay Motors passion drive and patience the formula for winning championships is also what keeps your or die alive at ebaymotors.com eligible items only exclusions apply eBay guaranteed fit only available to us customers back to the questions we go this one comes in from Mike Shriner what are the odds Isaac accordo plays this season on the qualifying offer I don’t think that the odds are great that happens it’s a possibility I I do think that it something that could happen he could end up accepting the qualifying offer which I need to go look what that is for him but the qualifying offer for him would mean that he plays this year essentially on a one-year contract he’s on a one-year deal because he’s a restricted free agent right now he’s just a little bit I guess restricted as far as where he can go because the Cavs have the right to match any contract given to him by another team obviously that has not yet happened he’s not been given a contract by another team yet we’ll see if that does happen but his his situation means that he could basically at this point be on a qualifying offer could sign a multi-year deal with the Cavs could be part of a sign in trade that gets him to a situation that he could be in next year that’s not in Cleveland if he accepts the calling qualifying offer he would then become an unrestricted free agent next year next summer he’d be an unrestricted free agent could go wherever he wants could have more power in the free agency than he does right now I don’t think that’s going to happen it could happen though it’s not some far-fetched thing to think that he couldn’t play on a qualifying offer that very well could be part of the situation but it’s not one that I expect to happen I wouldn’t put my money down that he’s going to be on the qualifying offer next year I do think he’s going to find a multi-year deal whether it’s in Cleveland or part of a sign and trade that gets him elsewhere there’s really not cap space left um certainly not teams that I think have a ton of interest in Isaac Koro so I would expect him to be in a multi-year deal I don’t know if it’s going to be in Cleveland I don’t know if it’s going to be part of a sign in trade but I would expect him to be on a multi-year deal next year that’s just what I would that’s what I would think I do have one more Isaac aoro question this one from the 330 Sports show what’s next aoro sign in trade or will he be here any possible moves at this point or are we locked in until the deadline so there are still moves out there some of which could involve Isaac kakuro I think that really one of the Cav’s biggest Avenues to improving this roster right now without breaking up the core four obviously if they decide hey Jared Allen nice know you we want to trade you one we want to break up the core four The Avenues open up there are more ways that this team can get better because there would be a lot of teams lining up to trade for Jared Allen so they’re the Cavs could be more creative like that but if they just want to get better and not worry about breaking up the core 4 and keeping it together a sign and trade involving Isaac kakuro was probably the simplest path there and that path is not easy it’s not very clear signing trades are difficult in the NBA they’re very challenging in the NBA Isaac aoro being part of one could be a move that the Cavs have up their sleeve this year that could be something that works um maybe a sign and trade to Brooklyn that is what I keep coming back to to me that is what makes the most sense I think he’d fit great in Brooklyn I think he would be able to expand upon what he’s done in Cleveland I think his role offensively would be much bigger than it is now and I think that Brooklyn has a couple of pieces that should interest the Cavaliers and guys like Dori andin Smith guys like cam Johnson I think those guys make a ton of sense in Cleveland so I’m going to keep circling back to the Cavs and Nets as being potential trade partners because both sides still has what the other side wants and I Isaac aoro very well could be part of that so I do think he could be here but I think a sign in trade is something that is very possible I think that absolutely Could Happen thank you for the question up next Jeff is Luke Travers going to get a roster spot I don’t know this um but I will say after watching him play in one preseason game you know obviously he missed their or I’m sorry Summer League game not preseason he missed their first Summer League game this year against Orlando Magic duee to I believe it was some hamstring tightness played against the Milwaukee Bucks he looks like he’s an MBA role player he looks like he can play at the next level he’s not going to be a star he’s not going to be a guy that goes and gets you 20 points a game but could he be an eighth or ninth guy in the NBA on a good team I think so I don’t see why not um in watching him and you know I’ll be able to see him up close on Wednesday and Thursday when the Cavs play in their final two regular Summer League games so I’ll have a better opinion of this and of course I will be able to talk to some people out there about this and this is one of the questions that I’m very interested to get answered but I do think that he’s got a future in the NBA I don’t know if it’s going to be this year I don’t know if it’s going to be next year but I think that Luke Travers has a future in the NBA he is somebody that I view as a role player he said when he had his media availability in Cleveland last week his goal is to be an NBA role player I think that goal is pretty attainable for him I do but I don’t know if that roster spot’s going to come this year if it’s going to come next year or if he’s going to ask to be traded to a situation with his rights to be traded to a team that wants to bring him over and wants to allow him to play in the NBA I don’t know what the future is going to hold for him but I do believe that future for him is being an NBA player I don’t think he’s going to be on that list of guys that are drafted the second round that are drafting stash guys and then just never end up playing in the league I don’t think Luke Travers is going to be part of that thank you Jeff for the question however um up next this one is from two different people they sent very similar questions so I just combined them uh wer 1970 and Dylan for Cle what are your impressions of Amman Bates summer league performance so far and do you feel his continuing develop will lead to more playing time this upcoming season for the Cavs so I think ammani Bates has been up and down I do I think he’s a good basketball player I think there is an NBA player in there somewhere with him I really believe that but he’s not a finished product I think he needs some development still um what he has done with his body I think has been a really good sign I do think that his body improving adding weight was very very important obviously he added 26 pounds I believe it was that he said so that is something that is very important because he needed to be stronger to be able to survive in the NBA game also I think there are times where he doesn’t make decisions quick enough I think there are times where he can dribble the air out of the basketball a little bit too much for somebody of his skill set now to be fair his role with the summer league team is so much different than his role with the Cavs would be could he be more of a spot up shooter type for the Cavs you know he’s got a pretty good shot I think that he’s capable of making those three-point attempts but is that a role that he’s going to fit in with you know there are times where I think he looks like a good pick and roll ball handler I absolutely do believe that but is he good enough at that to do it in the NBA I’m not so sure about that those are the things and again as I just mentioned with Luke Travers I’m very interested to to watch ammani up close and in person this week and see what he looks like in year two in the Cavs his second summer league and just get more of a feel for him up close that to me is something that is going to be important to find out that’s going to be important for me to find out because if he is possibly part of the future here I think that’s great sign I I think that’s awesome especially with today’s climate in terms of how the CBA is written getting somebody that’s on a two-way deal or a very cheap contract or you know the the second level exception the way that Amani Bates would be able to be on like a a very team-friendly contract having a contributor in that space is a really big deal when it comes to building teams like the fact that Craig Porter Jr to me looks like an an NBA player and he was undrafted and on is on a very team-friendly contract the fact that he is somebody that I think can play in the NBA for 10 years I think that’s exactly what the Cavs need so if ammani Bates works out it’s a big big big win for them that would be just a massive win for the Cavs I don’t know if it’s going to be this year I don’t know if it’s going to happen but I’m very interested to see what he looks like in summer league so I it’s part of the reason why um I cannot wait to get to Vegas to watch him play just because I don’t know what the future is going to look like for him so I’ll be very interested to see what he looks like up close and personal in year number two in the Las Vegas summer league got more questions got more answers a question about somebody being on the hot seat I think that temperatures cooled off a little bit that’s all straight ahead right here un lock on Cavs Today’s Show is brought to you by FanDuel I love sports you love sports if you’re watching this obviously you love sports I love sports enough to talk about them every single day but not as many sports as I would like to be on TV every night or on TV every night right now yeah the WNBA is awesome love checking that out Major League Baseball great love watching the Cleveland couple days nobody plays for a couple days it’s the AL break the Guardians are plus 1,800 to win the World Series that number has fluctuated quite a bit it’s plus 2200 a little a little few weeks ago down to 1,800 get them while you can they’re going to make a trade thought they had a great draft this week they are going to be a force to be reckoned with in October you’re going to wish when the playoffs start you’re going to wish you had the Guardians at plus 18800 to win the World Series so go to fandel and start making the most out of your summer fandel the official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball more questions here as we get through today’s locked on Cavs again thank you for making lock on Cavs your first listen every day reminder I will be in Los Vegas for summer league starting today comment on this video tweet me at real D Cunningham what sort of content do you want to see from the Las Vegas summer league from me going to be there today through Friday night hit me up let me know what you’re looking for I cannot wait to be there cannot wait to check things out I think it’s going to be um a a really exciting time to watch some of the younger players part of the Cavs organization on the basketball floor um up next thoughtful OG what type of contract offer will ammani Bates get so I do think that if if possible the Cavs would love to have ammani Bates on a two-way contract again next year I don’t know if bat’s Camp would go for that um he is obviously still unsigned the Cavs still do have his rights it’s not as if he can he’s restricted so it’s not as if he can just say hey I’m going to go play for another team and there’s nothing you can do about it the C have a voice in this I think they would love to have him on a two-way contract again next year I think that’d be their ideal situation if they could get him on a two-way I think they’d be very very happy about that now I don’t know if that’s going to be possible if not I would think he’s on a very very team-friendly NBA standard contract and he’s probably still going to spend a decent chunk of time in the g-league with the Cleveland charge this year I think that’s probably part of his story this year so I don’t I don’t know what that contract is going to look like but I think it’d be a big win a really really big win for the Cavs if they had him on a two-way contract again next year I don’t know if that’s going to happen though but that is certainly what I think would be the the biggest win for the Cavaliers last question as I wrap up here today at Cleveland rocks if Kobe runs it back with the same core where do the Cavs have to finish in order for him to save his job for them to save their jobs u meaning the front office is the whole I presume here and I assume that this is finished in the Eastern Conference not overall in the NBA I’d have to think he’s on the hot seat if running it back is what they plan on doing so I don’t think Kobe seed is as hot as some other people might think I don’t and yes I don’t necessarily agree with running it back to the extent that it looks like the Cavs are running it back I don’t think that’s the best play but Kobe Alman in September of 2022 took a huge swing a huge swing trading for Donovan Mitchell gave up Lowry marinan gave up Colin seon gave up oay baji gave up a number of draft picks that still have not gone to Utah for Donovan Mitchell it’s a lot to give up for a guy who is awesome Donovan Mitchell fantastic basketball player been one of the 10 best in the world since he’s been in Cleveland that that was a big swing there was a huge swing and then this summer Donovan Mitchell said that he wanted to play the best basketball of his career spend the best years the prime of his career with the Cavaliers in Cleveland I think that alone gets Kobe Alman off the hot seat yeah we can talk about some moves that haven’t been made that we’d like to see made and that this roster is not perfect and I don’t think Kobe’s been perfect but ultimately he landed a star in Cleveland and he got that star to say I want to spend the best years of my career with the Cavs yeah there are some moves that he probably should have made and he hasn’t there are some moves that he’s made that he probably shouldn’t have but when the biggest swing that you take as an executive is the trade that he pulled off with Utah and then the guy you traded for commits to a contract extension after after two seasons it’s hard for me to look at him and say yeah if this doesn’t go well this year he’s gone now if Donovan would have asked for a trade or not signed the extension this is a different conversation but the fact that he traded for a top 10 player in basketball again not everything’s been perfect it hasn’t been but the fact that he traded for a top 10 player in basketball and then that player signed a contract extension with the Cavs I think that’s enough for right now to where he’s not on the hot seat maybe next year it’s a different conversation if things don’t go well this year but I just don’t think right now Kobe Alman is or should be on the hot seat I think his job is safe I think it should be safe doesn’t mean he’s perfect doesn’t mean I’m thrilled with every move he doesn’t or does or doesn’t make but the fact that Donovan Mitchell committed to being in Cleveland long term that buys you some time I really truly believe that buys you some time thank you clevand rocks thank you to everyone that ask questions if you’ve got questions keep dropping them in the comments um I’m going to do a better job of reading those comments going to try and do a mailback episode at least once a week if not twice a week as the summer starts to arrive once summer league is over again I’ll be in Las Vegas starting 1. Yall hype about a average pg it’s been 4 years already and seen lil to no progress it’s not just about last season 😂 he really hasn’t improved yall cavs reporters and bloggers have no real expectations of this team yall sat the bar so low for this team it’s sad this roster sad this Gm is sad SMH 😂😭

  2. Bates must first learn to play through contact. Travers might be end of bench back up to Wade. Garland can be comeback player of year. If playing good return in trade will be much higher. Chris Paul is old and fragile, Spurs may need Garland before trade deadline. Struss is really a 2, not 3. Expect more Wade and Okoro, matchup dependent. Hopefully Atkinson uses bench moremthan Bickerstaff did.

  3. –the two small guard offense has proven that it doesn't work.
–DG is a liability on defense.
–a frontcourt of Wade, Mobley and Allen holds almost any team under 100 points.
–With DM at the helm in Jan, the Cavs were the best team in the NBA winning 17 out of 18.
–If DG comes off the bench, it will vastly improve the bench scoring output. He could easily average 20 per gamecoming off the bench operating against a backup point guard.
–at the 2 position, choose from Ocoro, Strus, Merrill or bates.
–Mobley only needs to score 15 per game with this lineup.
–keep in mind that the Dennis Rodman was very valuable to the Bulls but scored few points.

  4. The two routes the Cavs might have to go with, both include Okoro. We need a stretch big who can back up Evan & JA in both scenarios.

If Koby could S&T Okoro along with a couple of SRPs 4 a stretch big like an Onyeka Okongwu from the Hawks or Zach Collins from SAS, I could c a world were both Bates & Travers r on the Cavs Roster with CPJ & Tyson.

If this can't happen, Okoro will reluctantly sign his 1-year tender. Then, with the Cavs being hard capped, Koby will sign F Yuta Watanbe & F/C Chimezie Metu 2 veteran minimums using the 5 million Tax Payer MLE. In this scenario, Luke is back overseas, and Emoni is back in the G League.

  5. 📬 Summer league idea, are any of our players in the summer league NBA ready and which teams could they play for immediately to help improve their roster? Since you will be seeing them live courtside I'd like to get your opinion just for fun.

  6. We'll see how it is under a new coach. He has to quit dribbling so much and driving into a crowded paint where he gets beat up.

  7. Hopefully bates is good enough in the next 2 years to replace vert and for less than half the money. Id rather see wade in vs max.

  8. Bates should be on the roster. Shooting is always needed. But he needs to accept a role, and not go ISO or hold onto the ball. Shoot when open, or move the ball.
