Coach Jason March on Grizzlies vs. Mavericks

hey Grizzlies fans I’m standing here with head coach of the summer league team for the Memphis Grizzlies Jason March after the 20-point win over the Dallas Mavericks we talked after the last game about if you were happy with your team’s offense if you were happy with your team’s defense but you kicked off this one allowing just 11 points in that first quarter we continue to talk about uh the emphasis on the defensive end what did you like from your squad to start today’s game I love that we just came out the same way that we played in the last game um I was a little concerned going into this one um just with tired legs tired bodies you know it’s we kind of been going for a while here every single day um so I know and we’re asking a lot of these guys so I I was a little concerned to start and then they they answered uh they answered right away um Scotty started it with just the pressure on the ball creating turnovers um it’s huge for us because it allows us to get a lot of easy baskets like i’ like I’ve mentioned before so um just impressed with the full group um of their focus number one coming in but uh just the same things we keep talking about the pressure uh physicality and then play trying to play the right way and together in summer league is not the easiest thing to do I feel like we’re doing a fairly good job of it we mentioned before that first game here in Vegas that you wanted to kind of wipe the slate and start fresh here in Vegas offensively and defensively now you’ve had two 20-point games in a row how has this team been able to be so consistent uh the defensive end that’s what’s fueling us that’s what’s driving our group um and now it’s you know it’s a challenge you know how many turnovers can we can we get and then how many turnovers can we we get in a row how many stops can we get in a row um and then it’s you know then the bench guys come in Isaiah Miller uh decky I mean these guys come in and now they’re hounding the ball Jake’s doing a great job of it GG um he got up a little bit um tonight pressured the ball full court a little bit more we want to see continue to see more of that so it it’s all the defensive end that’s what’s driving us um at some point we’re going to be losing a game and we’re going to need the same thing from us um defensively to create those easy buckets for us because um every we’re not the only team trying to play that way I mean this is Summer League every team picks up uh every team is physical you have a lot of fouls so um teams use them so at some point it’s going to flip um we’ll we’ll be behind um and then it’s just how are we going to respond can we remember the things that that drove us in these two games that got us these leads got us these wins because no matter what we’re down by at some point throughout the course of the summer league if we continue to compete like that on the defensive end it’s going to help us you talk about that mindset right like continuing to to be to play defense hard and to have that dog in you even if and when you’re down at some point these two wins how important has it been to kick off Vegas with those two wins morale wise chemistry wise for the guys yeah I mean in Salt Lake City I I don’t know I don’t know what the outside was thinking I mean we weren’t too concerned um we knew what we were I I said it after training camp um we got guys that can guard so if you can do that you’re always going to give yourself a chance and then the offensive end is a sometimes a struggle for us um in Salt Lake it was a struggle for us um you’re starting to see now we’re starting to figure out the things that we’ve worked on and taught um finding better space on the floor um who’s cutting and when um and then touching the paint getting those paint touches and then open up Shooters we want to make more shots I think we will um but I this is this is exactly the group that I thought we would see um I didn’t expect to win both games wire to wire like this um but I they’re answering what we thought they could be and it’s fun to watch them trust me it’s fun to watch as well uh halfway through pool play for lack of a better term here in Vegas uh what’s the message to the guys before the next game you’re going to be tired next game we have a back toback coming up they’re going to be tired we all know that um we’ll we’ll try to have an easy day tomorrow try to get some guys that haven’t played a lot um try to get them a few minutes um in some some scrimmage but um adversities coming I mean it’s it happens it’s not going to be easy um adversity is coming how are we going to respond for from it and um I have a lot of belief in this group that they’ll respond the right way there we go uh thank you so much coach March good luck the
