joined me on Weston Walker just yesterday not yesterday last week I should say we played some comments but I told you we were going to talk about it yesterday and we talked about a plethora of topics we got the rundown on what was going to happen with tajon salon and Brandon Miller and Mark Williams G to be shooting threes possibly we’ll see it hopefully next year and he also talked about lamelo at the end and I asked him a few questions about lamelo ball here Doug and here’s what he had to say about the status of lamelo this offseason when I asked him how his health is doing and then he went into further detail um he has been one of the guys you know he and I have been in contact with t um he’s been in the gym a lot and so I’m just really happy um with a lot of our players their their offseason training and everything that they’ve kind of been doing but he’s been one of the guys that has really stood out to me um in terms of his consistency with his work love hearing it and I I know some people that were lamelo fans they quote tweeted that and said oh but we’re not seeing him the Hornets aren’t posting him on social media so does that mean that he’s not working hard I never buy into the idea that just because somebody’s not on social media it’s not I I don’t subscribe to the idea that you have to post it on Instagram for it to count your workout I do think that Charles Lee is being 100% truthful and that lamelo is a guy that does stick out remember this anytime that people criticize lamelo I I don’t know if it’s ever been about his love for basketball or if it has been it’s all been false everybody has talked about how much the dude loves the game he doesn’t love watching it which might be a little weird to people and he has admitted that but he does love playing basketball and that’s where he is his most comfortable that’s where we’ve seen his most comfortable interviews with Dell Curry with NBA Inside reporters that are there on the court while he’s shooting Hoops that’s when he’s going to be the most talkative the dude loves playing and it think it seems like Charles Le is seeing a lot of that side of lamelo including the hard work he just got to stay healthy Doug that’s the story of this upcoming season well yeah that’s the whole thing right it’s that’s not a change we’ve had multiple coaches going back to James bgo and Clifford say that you know lamelo’s commitment to working in the gym is topnotch that’s never been a knock on him I think the knock on him right now is that you know is he willing to do what it takes even if it’s uncomfortable even if it’s new to stay healthy and I think to Charles Lee’s credit he has already come in and and not mentioned lamelo by name but been very truthful about the injury history of this team and how so much of that is on the organization you know to and they’ve done they’ve made some changes to the training staff but a lot of it’s on the players too doing what’s necessary before the season to get ready for the season and then when you’re in season treating your body such that you can not only stay healthy but if you do inevitably get injured that you can recover quickly and so he’s been honest about that I think he’s been honest about a couple of other things as well so I think that Charles Lee unlike Clifford before him has a little bit more um I would say leeway if you will some Charles leeway some CET uh to make some criticisms of lamelo that maybe Clifford because look Clifford came in as like the sort of caretaker you know after the Kenny Atkinson debacle it wasn’t like Clifford was some kind of high-profile hire with championship experience so I think Clifford did have to be a little bit more political a and you had to consider that they were working on extending lamelo as well to the max contract well all of that’s look the the money’s already been given out and and so now I think there can be a little bit more pressure put on lamelo and and a lot of these players to continue to get better well and the dude’s played barely over 50 games the last two seasons oh yeah too so the status has changed in the fact that before that when he was injured his rookie year he still got to over 50 he played over 70 his second season in the league so just pretty healthy player his sophomore campaign getting to an All-Star game and then after that the last two the last half of his career so far the dude has barely played over 50 so everything has changed surrounding lamelo like the reputation according to a lot of hornets fans whether it’s the health status because you know overall like 50 and 70 it’s not terrible the first two seasons it’s been the last two with a lot of different ankle injuries and then of course it’s is lamelo doing everything he can to make sure he doesn’t suffer another ankle injury we know that he likes to work hard and be on the court constantly we have the the story from Mitch Cup on draft night where they go out to dinner and then lamelo’s like hey do you know of a gym like can can we go to the Hornets facility I don’t think they could do that at that time but they found a gym for him to get some shots up like that was the story guy can’t stop working hard so hopefully that continues go ahead you have some other comments well it but it is strange how little we’ve seen of lamelo and I’m not just talking about workout videos I’m just talking about in general as a as the highest paid player on the team uh the former rookie of the year uh the the last Allstar that this team has had how little marketing has been done uh surrounding him for this team now you know maybe that changes as we get you know closer to the season and in the season but is it is really strange to me I mean the last time we saw him was at Charles Lee’s press conference and it was a a video posted by the social media team a video I think that was taken by Nick Smith junor in which uh lamelo off the camera um gave the double Birds yeah and then and then of course previously to that he was in the news uh not really marketed by the team but was in the news for maybe uh running over a kid’s foot you know what as I talk this out now I’m I’m starting to to think about like why they maybe maybe it’s been a good idea I was going to bring that up Doug I don’t know if exactly you’re trying to Showcase him one-on-one talking about all sorts of other stuff while he does have this lawsuit I guess still going and against the team too by the way if I’m not yeah that’s still going on we don’t have any Clarity on on what’s taking place there this is like a presidential candidate a certain presidential candidate maybe we need to hide lamelo for a while we don’t need to let lamelo get out there and do do you have another lamelo sound bite that we can play from that interview or are we moving on uh no I don’t did you did you give me one I did not give you one so that was a trick question let’s move on coming up next on I told him we were celebrating the California classic title and it one they didn’t give us we’ll we’re celebrating titles that they didn’t give us that’s right we are again I have made the comparison to UCF when they were undefeated and they did not get picked to compete for a championship and then they would beat Auburn in a bowl game so they finish the season undefeated and they don’t get awarded a championship but they throw a parade anyway that is for the California classic despite the classic giving the title to the Warriors I said that they have enough by the way they the Golden State Warriors have enough titles hang banners they’ve got cases full of championships like a come on where would where do they put that like where does the California classic trophy go in San Francisco we’d put it somewhere here in Charlotte anyways so yeah they get the trophy but we earned it we went undefeated as well and I told Charles Lee that we were celebrating that here’s what he had to say I appreciate you guys celebrating that Championship it’ll prepare you for uh as we continue to build uh what the championship celebration is going to look like in Charlotte yeah yes everybody is feeling this you feel it that’s oh man the WFNZ text line loved it people loved that sound bite and we were just getting started we didn’t even get to the juicy stuff the informative stuff it was just him Thanking us for celebrating that title because we I love little ra I mean I mean you know when is this the last time this organization has had someone at the helm that can give us a little rah give us some Rah baby that’s what I want Seth Curry does he give you some rahr I don’t know we can talk about it he’s back with the Charlotte Hornets on a one-year deal remember Seth Curry had actually been waved and there was a hypothesis out out there that he could come back and just play on a cheaper contract with the Hornets and so he did agree to a new deal with the Hornets my light went out goodness gracious hopefully that doesn’t happen with Seth Curry the light is still in Seth Curry as he comes back we liked him like didn’t play very much Doug only appeared in eight contests for the Hornets just last season after the trade deadline did have one start but also he holds a career average of 10 points per game we know how good of a shooter he is and in fact 43% from three-point range and I think actually got his mid-range game going like really helped him out when the offense stagnated and he would get to his spots at the elbow and just knock down some jump shots you know they’ve got a lot of guards it’s not the position that I would go to and say oh they desperately need help here but he was a good player I’m cool with this and you have the Family Ties I’m All Aboard Seth Curry oh definitely again one-year deal uh and it’s it’s going to be probably vet minimum because he was he was due to make 4 million and they said we’re not going to do that but you know we could work something out vet minimum and so Seth Curry does return I like it again just more veterans I mean they’ve really I think by my counts if you don’t count leaky black as as a two-way because I’m I’m still on the fence are they going to make him are they going to continue that two-way then they have 15 guys on the roster so the the question would be uh really around vasam meic at this point and Reggie Jackson do they Ain one or both of those point guard options behind lamelo ball and then Seth Curry you know along with the mid-range along with the three-point shots he did a little playmaking as well so you’re you’re adding that into the mix as well and then Trey man so yeah I think the the guard question I mean they answered a little bit of the forward question with Taj Gibson but I think there’s still some work to be done with a third big and another either bigger Wing or another power forward you know to go in behind miles Bridges and Grant Williams so you know I think those are the sort of roster questions we have in fact I’ve got the if you want to take a look at this rotation document I’ve updated it here so for the starters I still have Lamela ball Josh Green Brandon Miller miles Bridges Mark Williams for reserves I’m I still have Vos amich until until they tell me otherwise Vos amiches keeps telling me otherwise he won’t even mention the Charlotte Hornets but I’ve still got him there Trey man Cody Martin Grant Williams Nick Richards as your reserves now I’ve slotted in Seth Curry Nick Jr and Taj Gibson in the uh oh column and which is really your third string like uhoh you’ve gotten a few injuries then for swarm I’ve got KJ Simpson there for sure tjon Salon I’ve got him there right now now this is what we’re going to talk about the next segment Vegas he could get out of the Swarm column and definitely work his way into the yo column um if you know when we see him with some more extended minutes then I’ve got Reggie Jackson lost in cap space I’ve got a new column called two-way or no way that’s leak black Jake Stevens and mgee and then finally James Nai is in Spain sorry Nai still in Spain you you you can have pimer in Memphis right now if you wanted to just to appease me that would be nice so I work it in um Seth Curry coming back I’ll I I think that makes it unlikely that Reggie Jackson is back and I I think he’s a better fit anyway so if you are bringing Reggie Jackson over Seth what what’s the advantage of having Reggie over Seth I think it’s the ball handling and the ability to play the one facilitating getting the offense set you have meic who can do that you have Trey man who can do that so if you have a couple of other guys that you would feel more comfortable going to in that role now you need the kickout and then the shooter Seth Curry is a better shooter than Reggie Jackson and you have some familiarity and let’s be honest there’s probably at least a little Teensy tiny bit of a family factor here with Del Curry possibly being the best Ambassador in Hornet’s franchise history so all of that with all of that Seth Curry welcome aboard and I’m here for it but I would say Reggie Jackson is probably the guy that is left off the roster now would you agree with that uh yes again I think there’s some big question marks around vasam meic but I I would love for the Hornets to retain vasam I mean this is a Euroleague MVP this is a guy U you know that was capable of scoring in 20 plus points dishing out 10 plus assists I mean he’s he he could be a game changer particularly if he gets more consistent with his three-point shot it’s a guy that that that again at a position with lamelo ball where there has been injury concerns if the Hornets if he did have to miss you know 10 plus games then having vosam Mees there would be a nice insurance policy the problem is is that I’m not sure vosam meic wants to play that role you know I don’t know that he wants to be backup point guard it seems he wants to go to a situation where he could get significantly more minutes than he would behind lamelo ball so I think that’s that’s the issue but if I’m just looking at this rotation I mean you know with with with the veteran ads I mean I’m I’m looking at a team honestly that I think could really beat some expectations could beat some Vegas odds this to me is the first time that I’ve looked at a Hornets rotation particularly this early in an offseason and thought wow this team is really taking things serious ly it’s not like they’ve gone out and got a bunch of Allstars and are ready to like you know do the Phoenix or the Clippers you know short circuit get get some playoff series wins uh they didn’t do that but I think this looks like a roster that could actually go and sneak up on somebody if they stay healthy and get into the playoffs well and with meic yeah he I think he’s a good player I think meic and man are both good I’ll say at the end of the season Doug it felt like meic was tailing off a little bit in the one area I think the Hornets did not have in the back court and that was Rim pressure and he still is good at that and at both getting there and hitting those shots but it was funny to see meic start to tail off a little bit and Trey man picked it up so maybe that allows you okay if if Trey is going to show you that the rim pressure from his game is real then maybe that allows you to move off of meic and then at that point you could keep Reggie Jackson if you value him so you got some room to play you permutations baby you got them and we’ll figure out what they decide to do in the B court and you have varied skill sets I think that’s what’s exciting too and you’ve got skill sets on both ends of the floor I mean with with Cody Martin Grant Williams Nick Richards in in your reserves you know it offsets a little bit of the defensive issues that and Josh Green that you could sort of move between the first and second unit offset some of the you know defensive issues that you’ve got with other players like meic and ball and and maybe Brandon Miller unless he makes a leap there defensively so man I yeah I just love the versatility of this roster as it sits today I hope they can I hope someone can get in vasam mich’s ear and say listen you can play a significant role on this team you might not be the starter and then maybe whisper or you might be you know if lamelo gets injured again so just hold on and you know uh hang with this team here and let’s see what we can do let’s see if we can Shock the World in the Eastern Conference by the way Josh green with the underrated passing ability that he has just I really like that move nice job by the Hornets just get in on the Josh Green sweep Stak say you if you’re going to throw him away because you want Klay Thompson we will gladly take him and we will give you what just two second round picks and that’s it and and you yeah you lose a little passing from meich and and you know maybe not so much man to be honest with you although I think he is a good passer with green coming in with the body with the good enough shooting like there there’s not enough lost from meic going to the bench that you don’t at least somehow offset a little bit with Josh Green in there like and plus they’re advantages defensively he gives you Rim pressure as well I just I really like that move and now meic and man can play Off the Bench did I did I talk you into hornet’s uh playoff birth here did I talk you into it yet well how where where are we at on that meter you pulled you you gave me a Jawan Howard let’s Shock the World moment with the Hornets because meit might be a bench player I love it um yeah I already said that they’re going to be top four already said that after the job trade I saw that in the NBA draft the 2023 NBA draft that the Hornets drafted a ghee I was like okay well how many guys have the last name ghee spelled exactly the the right way and also the first name of that player that was selected by the Hornets it was Muhammad so I just thought there was a typo by basketball reference I didn’t know if there was a name change going on but I had never seen really any other iteration of that name before so I thought okay what a fun coincidence the Hornets selected Muhammad oi they traded him to Boston and then Boston somehow sent his rights over to Atlanta where we what got him after he was with playing with Atlanta no there there is a right ghee and a wrong ghee Doug as you have come out right twin and a wrong twin there there is we have we’ve we’ve done the I think we have the right gee we I think we have the right ghee as well explain to the people all right so yes so Muhammad ghee was the ghee that was a part of The Hornet’s trade uh mohammadu G was part of the Raptors organization that the Hornets brought into their summer league I think the confusion happened when ghee got hurt when our ghee when the right ghee got hurt uh then the muhamad ghee started showing up on the radar in summer league for the Atlanta Hawks and I think a lot of fans were going hey wait a minute I thought he was injured did he not this is a classic Steve Stevens situation that we have on our hands here and yes so mohammadu G is still on the Hornet summer league roster and hopefully we get to see him here in Vegas before all is said and done because I was enjoying watching the right ghee play we said we liked muhammadu G well I think it was for JT Thor never mind but perhaps we get the Chris buet we didn’t get in JT Thor we just get him in the form of muhamad uge and it was the Raptors that took him so maybe we just stole their next christm CH bu listen if if all the Hornets front office does for the next couple of years is just take players from continue to take players from OKC and the Raptors and the Heats um then I’m I I I’m not going to argue too much with that not at all it’ll have a saying Okay g that’s what I want to say muhammadu G honestly if we’re talking about what we want to see tonight I’d love to see him suit up and then perhaps play well that would be something that I want to see in Vegas pre uh summer game number two yeah I’m going to look at Salon here does Brandon Miller play or not and if he doesn’t play does that mean significantly more minutes for tjan Salon who we learned is dealing with uh the the knee laceration but wasn’t there there was some other like minor injury and they were being a little bit careful with him in that game one there there was there were there were two injuries that Charles Lee talked about there was one injury that he suffered before they drafted him minor enough obviously cuz he’s playing and then was another injury that he suffered after he did the post-draft media availability so couple things he’s dealing with but again at least it’s not keeping him from the court well and what I want to see is if you do increase those minutes um does he increase his usage and you know sometimes particularly with young players particularly with projects as we see the usage go up we start to see the warts a little bit more you know with 14 minutes played in the first game 8.7 rebounds he was very active and pretty efficient with what he did offensively at least and so you know I’m going to be pay paying attention to that I I’ll probably be paying closer attention to salon’s defense in this one I want to see you know how because I was really I was paying attention to what jumped off the screen which was him running in transition but I’ll probably be paying a little bit more attention to his half court defense in this game that that’s going to matter man that that’s what keeps him from the court to me because we we can like the trans transition stuff it’s so much fun we can understand what his role is at that size I actually don’t think he’s crazy thin right I think he can bang a little bit down low and and hold up physically well enough I don’t think the lack of physicality or the lack of frame would be something that keeps him from a regular season game I think it’s the understanding of a halfcourt defensive set getting back on defense is half the battle transition right like maybe it’s even 75% of the battle just getting back and then deciding how to play it to one he’s long enough to even offset some of the issues he might have just IQ Wise It’s All About the half court stuff that you talked about that’s the thing right that’s the thing that would keep him from seeing an NBA court this year yeah I think he’s a physical player because that to me there’s a little bit of heart and aggression that goes into that I think he has that um I think there was a transition defense play in that first game where he got he basically got ridden to the rim by I don’t know a guard or a forward like it was a situation where I went oh yeah he’s got to he’s got to put on some put on some muscle put on some bulk before he’s able to figure that out but I I agree I don’t think he’s like rail thin you know but I I don’t think for what again I think he’s appropriately sized for a three I just don’t think he’s a three he’s a four so he’s he’s got a he’s got to bulk up a little bit so I’m gonna I’m going to watch for that obviously you know Jake Stevens Island the real estate market tanked after that first game you know um I’m I’m in deep debt here on Jake Stevens Island so hopefully I can recover a few of my losses and he can put together a better performance because I do think there is an open spot there for a two-way slot for a center that can shoot but Jake Stevens missed all three of his three-point attempts in that first game so I hope he gets a few more opportunities and uh Nick Smith Jr can he follow up what was his really only good game that he’s had in summer league and and his best outing can he follow that up continue continue to show that he’s made some strides in playmaking and then finally overall I thought the team had its worst defensive outing um despite adding Brad and Miller to the mix they they were great defensively and C uh and then moving to Vegas they slipped a little bit against the Knicks so as they go up against Denver I want to see them lock it down a little bit with long staff at the helm as opposed to Lee last thing you you touched on pretty much everything there so I I don’t have much more to add I I will say maybe Banks gives us another game like he gave against the Knicks then there’s something there right like he continues to keep the door open he’s got his foot in the door um if Stevens isn’t hitting shots and isn’t physically rebounding and Banks is out there blocking shots and playing physical and just having his nice floater working on pick and pop like 10 feet out from the rim situation then he’s got his foot stuck in the door before you can slam it and like maybe just maybe he can you know if it’s not here if if ghee is healthy gets the two-way you keep leaky on one you give it to whoever else right Banks is playing for another spot but I I liked what I saw from banks in the last game so just keep playing well enough and maybe that’s another thing to pay attention to I did too and he outplayed Jake Stevens and and I would think if you’re looking towards like the training camp roster the exhibit 10 offers that they’re going to hand out then Banks is in a competition probably unless again unless G is like seriously hurt and there’s just no chance um and he’s going to miss like you know some significant amount of time then I think there is a battle between Stevens and and banks for one of those training camp slots because I’m not sure that they would bring all three of those centers to the mix so Banks is definitely playing for something uh so yeah definitely watching all of that uh interesting nugget from Sam perley uh the Hornets uh the hornets.com writer said that the Hornets as an organization and Denver last played in summer league all the way back when Kimo Walker was playing in summer league and Kimbell Walker dropped 19 points and 10 assists in that game and they played Denver tonight and it is the first night of a backto back so that’s that’s another interesting thing there too if if Salon plays a lot of minutes in this first game because of the injuries if they are being careful I doubt he’s going to play as significant of minutes in the back half of that oh man do we have too many point guards in two many centers it’s a beautiful day in Hornet’s land absolutely love it I’m telling you it’s as if Lee and and Jeff Peterson they got here and they said let give me a list of everything that this organization has done over the past couple of years and they went okay do the exact opposite let’s let’s go in an exact opposite direction and I love it and I’m getting I’m getting excited and he’s talking championships and this guy’s won a championship Doug is titillated again I’m titillated he’s titilated
