rookies on the roster right now in Ryan dun Oso igodo and Jaylen Bridges which of those three players from what we have seen so far and what we know about the Suns roster and what the Suns roster could look like and everything else which of them will play the most minutes this season for the team this answer is uh probably going to ruffle some feathers but uh just because I know everyone’s an Oso believer at this point um myself included but I think it’s me Ryan Dunn I I just think I look at the roster construct of the Suns what do they need the most of what do they have the least of it’s Ryan Dunn I think that the defense has been incredible the foot speed everything just his awareness his IQ on that end it’s been as advertised the offense has been as well as advertised which is well yeah you know take what you can get at this point but yeah I think it’s it’s done um I think we’ll probably see both rookies of those two play a little bit um still on Bridge’s Island I’m still a fan but uh I think the answer this one for me is is pretty comfortably done at this point but I am very intrigued by Oso yeah igoro is definitely more buried on the depth chart right I mean that that’s kind of the obvious one where there’s two centers who are pretty reliable pretty consistent pretty clearcut veteran players who are in line ahead of him but I’ll make the case for Oso because I think his floor is higher his floor yeah his floor is higher than done when you put him out there if you’re Mike buen holer I think that there’s less variance in what might happen right like he’s not going to kill you maybe on the glass he might all these guys are young so of course there’s a possibility for mistakes but I can just kind of see him slotting into what he’s going to have to do in the NBA and what we frankly already know the other Suns bigs can do right where he’s going to be able to play a dribble handoff game make a play on the short roll finish around the basket punish you know kind of a drop defense in his own way with that floater which I believe will go in consistently even if it’s you know um he missed one and Drew a foul early in the game but he was four of four today it just kind of makes more sense I can see it a little bit more clearly I guess with him already and that’s what makes me just feel like over the course of a full season if nurkic is maybe a little less healthy or you know there’s still the possibility that between now and then uh now and February that nurkic is not on this team and that would open up a spot it just kind of feels like there’s more ways that I could see him contributing whereas the Ryan dun experience might be kind of a roller coaster in year one like you said Brandon but the question undone to throw it back to you is I was debating this with a few people who asked me about the pick when I was in Vegas do you think that he will play over aogi because now we know Josh Aki’s back on the team which we didn’t necessarily know the day of the draft or whatever I I I wonder if aogi just kind of steals dun’s minutes at least as a rookie I think so I think right off the rip at least Boon hoser is probably unless D has like an training camp and like just plays so well they can’t keep him off the court which would be awesome I think coach bu hoser is kind of typically been like that a little bit harder on rookies at least from the start and then you have to earn that trust and get in the rotation and I think aoi’s defense and energy kind of from their point of view would probably be like you know the a more experienced version of dun that’s going to get you results right away whereas dun’s still kind of that question mark and I think for Oso as well like the the strength is something that I think is going to take some time like as a center I think he he will get bullied by those bigger centers and there’s not any Center that’s going to come in right away and be up to speed with NBA strength it’s going to take two to three years at least uh for him to to catch up uh same with Dunn I think physically like there’s there’s going to be those bigger forwards that punish him too so I think uh just looking at it from that perspective I could see both both these guys buried on like on opening night if they don’t if they combin for zero minutes it would not surprise me I mean male Bridges played what like 15 seconds in his first NBA game exactly and that was a 10th overall pick who we all thought was going to be really good right so it it the likelihood of any of these guys making a real impact is always going to be pretty tiny for sure yeah and you’re also assuming a kogi even place like if they’re at full strength there’s there’s a world where maybe he’s a DMP agreed that was what I was going to jump on the next kind of from a different angle is I actually feel like well so after the first Summer League game the point that I kind of hit on with Ryan Dunn was that they had been using H how they had been using him as a point of attack defender in that first game defending Brandon psky quite a bit and in this Pacers game they had this the Newton kid from Yukon who uh you know didn’t play a ton wasn’t their primary guy necessarily as a scorer they kind of shared it a little bit so it wasn’t like okay everything’s running through this guy the way it was with psky and Dunn was more of I felt like his flashes were more kind of in help defense transition defense things like that I think there’s an open question how they’ll even use him how they think of him because point of attack Defender if that’s his role it is kind of him or aogi to fill that but I also think there’s a world where the conversation the debate among the coaching staff is more bold versus dun from a defensive role standpoint and I obviously dun is more impactful athletic overall Defender but if you’re kind of talking about a guy who’s playing more of like the four and is really more of like a helps side guy Rim secondary rim protector which dun can also do then it might be he needs to beat bow out to kind of as a backup to KD more so than like a backup to Royce O’Neal or you know fighting for with Josh hogi for minutes that that I I think that’s an open question too and I don’t know if we know that answer after just this couple Summer League games yeah and I think between those three whoever can rebound the most that’s that’s what’s going to win them minutes because right now this team’s weakness like it’s still they add a little size overall but I think it’s still rebounding right like aogi is pretty good for his size Dunn has a a few inches on him and then Bull’s obviously tall but he’s usually on the perimeter and not really known for being a rebounder so I think if Ryan Dunn can like just with his size alone if he’s a menace on the glass like that’s that’s going to earn him minutes and that’s why I think in the long run he will take that spot from aogi potentially bull um I’m still a Believer I think I don’t think it’s going to be either or I think they’ll probably mix and match a lot and Coach Bud loves to space it out with bigs that can shoot so I think there’s going to be some interesting wrinkles he could throw in there but yeah I think dun’s priority outside of the defense is definitely rebounding if he can contribute there uh to me he’s a no-brainer to get at least 10 to 15 minutes a night and just create chaos as we’ve seen just in these first two Summer League games alone his defense has been awesome yeah I think it’s a super good call the rebounding to me he just needs to slow down right now um you know he said after that first game that the speed of everything is is very much a shock I think a lot like I said a lot of his flashes have kind of been in these small moments of the game whereas you can definitely tell that eodo his kind of processing and his comfort in maybe like Pro style environments on frankly on both ends just looks a little closer to ready which is another reason that I’m just kind of like I think it’ll just happen for him sooner but I think if Dunn can just kind of let the game come to him on both ends he will be able to make an impact and yeah I think when he’s around the NBA staff right like just kind of focusing on like rebounding even crashing the offensive glass those are some small ways that they can kind of focus his energy and his mentality to where it’s it just feels like he’s thinking too much on especially on the offensive end right now where it’s like what am I supposed to be doing how do I help what are we running like you just you can see it and and of course that’s to be expected in in this environment but uh hopefully that can progress that’s the biggest thing right is this environment it’s it’s not really for non-c creators so that’s why all three of these rookies they they’re not going to be doing uh they’re not going to be creating their offense they’re not going to be asked to play in these large roles so that’s why I look at it very differently with how I evaluate guys in this setting because it’s yeah the guard play is just it makes you want to pull your eyes out sometimes and that’s why I think Oso’s popped a little bit more is because he can do that playmaking off the top of the key show those flashes whereas Dunn’s not really going to get get a chance to fully uh kind of showcase what he can do uh but I think defensively is really what you got to look at all right question number two looking at David Rody coming up after one more break first Today’s his potential a little bit and do a little more out there on the court with the reports swirling going into it that the suns are not fully against the idea of cutting him if they had a better uh opportunity personnel-wise come along to them has he shown you enough has he shown this team enough to lock in his roster spot and and be a possibility to to get some minutes this upcoming season what have your thoughts been on on Mr Rody I don’t think so um I commend him for wanting to go out there and showcasing and being the leader and doing all that like I think he played a lot better uh today but a team trying to win a championship they got to keep that roster spot open and if better situation presents itself David Rody is not someone you’re going to stop uh that opportunity from coming into fruition for so to me it’s a no-brainer that I mean he’s the obvious cut and it’s it’s been reported I’m not going to sit here and say it’s going to happen but uh I don’t think he’s in summer league at this point with his experience he should be the clear-cut star every single game and really like popping like we were seeing some some of these other guys around uh summer league doing and to me it’s just not we’re not seeing that from him and I think there’s there’s some things I like about his game I think he is probably an NBA player um I just don’t think given the circumstances and the the roster fit with kind of what the Suns need that it’s it’s going to be here in Phoenix so to me he hasn’t shown enough uh there they still have a couple more games that could change but again I a team being as aggressive aggressive as the suns are going to be like I just it it would be surprising if he wasn’t a casualty of that exact type of line of thinking especially after bringing a Kobi back yeah I mean look I think he could be an NBA player someday he is already 23 however um he will turn 24 next year he just has he he has shown nothing to make you believe that he is that or will be anytime soon right I mean it’s just at at some point you’ve seen enough to know that for a player that was an older Prospect coming in he is in uh in his rookie season he was in the 29th percentile in terms of effective field goal percentage this past season he was in the ninth percentile he has not shown the ability with the fluid athleticism that he needs to be a Lockdown Defender at the NBA level to even be kind of a one one end of the Court player and just be a a a defense first guy the way that you know people compare him to PJ Tucker PJ Tucker was in his mid-30s defending Devon Booker in the finals David Rody couldn’t defend Deon Booker now and he’s 23 you know so it’s just uh it’s a hard pathway what even is he as a player I don’t even know if we know that yet so the other part to remember is they didn’t necessarily sign up for this guy right I mean they had there’s touching rules in trades they wanted to get Royce O’Neal there were tangential things that had to happen for that all trade to all go down and then they end up with Rody so it doesn’t surprise me at all that they’ve considered cutting him I think they gave him a nice opportunity here I agree that his professionalism and his maturity through all of it really admirable a lot of guys could sulk or refuse to play or just go Chuck shots he’s he’s handled it all the right way and I’m sure that will buy him time on some other team or just to prolong his career because he’s going to get opportunities but yeah I mean look we just saw in Milwaukee today Gary Trent Jr end up taking a minimum we’re to that point in the summer and if a Marquel folz or whatever guy you fill in the blank with somebody that you might like ends up being willing to take that I I I don’t know how you could say well no we got David Rody we can’t explore that right I mean come on exactly that’s and that’s a great point about we’re not sure what he is like if you want to make her roster in the league you have to have at least one bankable skill that team’s like okay if this happens you know if XYZ happens we’re going to bring this guy in to do this to counter this like I I just don’t see that with him um I think he was an awesome college player like he was a lot of fun I think he will stick somewhere eventually I just for for like you said with the way that this offseason’s gone and how many good fre agents are still available and when I say good I mean relative to what you’re going to get at this stage in free agency um I just yeah if something pops up where a guy pulls a Gary Trent or something similar like it’s just yeah I mean you got you got Foltz tus Jones as available still you have Jetty Osman who could be you know a wing shooter you have you know Reggie Bullock who I know is not anybody’s favorite player but a lot of these guys are certainly Lonnie Walker more playable I think than than Rody because they have that one skill right they have that thing and like I get the idea I guess of kind of having him be more of a playmaker in summer league but I don’t think that’s going to be his game to me it’s like I mean PJ Tucker is kind of the model in a way on the offensive end where it’s like just keep the ball moving make the right play and make make your corner threes but if the jumper is not going to go in and it’s just it’s an uphill battle he’s just not bigger athletic enough to have a different role if he’s not going to be able to make threes yeah 100% And I’m just you know the undersized guard forward stuff needs to die with the Suns like we I feel like they have too many of that like if if they’re going to get someone that’s smaller at least they need like we’ve talked about is having that one skill or like a fults with his ability to you know penetrate create for others all that and then if it’s Reggie Bullock hitting threes even like if you’re a championship team you need someone that can come in and impact the game somewhere um so to me he’s odd man out well we’ll see I mean there there’s still time uh we’ll see what he can do I mean there’s a game tomorrow maybe he just is plays so well that the Suns change their minds but I I just can’t I can’t see it where we are now yeah and look they have to also find a deal and and find that other player before you know he’s on the roster for now he has a guaranteed contract for next season so we talking about tomorrow or anything exactly we are talking about them having to eat money fully cut a guaranteed player and now pay another guy you know that is somewhat rare in the NBA but like you said at the beginning given how urgent everything is with the Suns and honestly how few other moves they really have made this off season I think you kind of have to leave no stone unturned so to speak and you know like we’ve said multiple times he had an opportunity to blow people away and and he didn’t quite meet that Mark so if he doesn’t through the rest of Summer League then I think you kind of owe it to yourself to say hey that that’s an opportunity to go get a different player and increase how much we like our roster and you kind of have to so all right let’s look at the rest of the group those are the top three players on this summer league roster let’s quickly go through everybody else including Jaylen Bridges the two-way guy we also heard some details from Colin Gillespie about why he didn’t participate so we’ll cover him as well to close out the show all right Brandon last question burning question number three here on the sun summer league you had put it this way and I think it’s a good way to look at it which of the guys who are not the three players we’ve already talked about are the most likely to be on an NBA team five years from now and yeah take that any direction you want what’s your answer this include Gillespie and bridges are we talking about can I mean we haven’t seen Gillespie which is part of the tough part of including him because we’re kind of like you know looking at his g-league stats from Denver last year and whatnot but and I guess fanova we all watched him but yeah include him in there yeah I think gpie is my pick I I think he is an NBA player um what is that going to look like like obviously high-end scenarios like everyone wants to be the next TJ McConnell or you know there’s there’s certain guards I think that are broken out that have been very good college players high IQ that can make a solid backup point guard in the NBA and I think that’s that’s a very probable outcome for him I think uh it’s the path to get there is tough in this league the point guard’s the deepest position so that’s against him right off the bat but um Bridges I think I don’t know if it’s going to be in Phoenix I know if it’s going to be two or three years from now but I think there’s a world where he’s a rotation player somewhere someday like that if you can shoot you have size and you can defend and make interesting plays and reads on both ends like there there’s a spot for you in the league so I think to me he he’s really stood out in small Spirits where it’s just like the idea of him is intriguing so I think I don’t know if it’ll be in Phoenix uh but I think he’s an NBA player too down the road so those I think both those guys I’m pretty highe on relative to them being where they are at the the bottom of an NBA roster yeah I like Bridges a lot I I mean I think physically you can obviously see that he’s pretty thin the idea of him being an on ball impact Defender as you know early on in his career maybe is far-fetched but I think you know even with male we saw him add strength without looking bigger I think that just kind of comes when you’re a professional athlete and you’re you know in a training regimen that is really supposed to develop you as a your exact role and all that stuff and you’re not kidding yourself that you’re going to be you know a playmaker anymore and all that so I think that that will come for him but you’re right the the interesting plays on both ends is honestly the part of it that intrigues me the most with Bridges where you know he’s reading passing Lanes he’s he’s a really instinctive help Defender there was one play where you know his strength his limit strength limitations did kind of show up at the same time but there was one it ended up in a a free throws for I believe Newton on the Pacers early in the game but Bridges had a really solid dig into that drive and almost stole the ball from him and then you know Newton kept it going and barreled into the center and and Drew a foul but just those little plays where you can tell he knows kind of it’s like the practical application of what we always say that guy knows where to be on defense like that he does and you can see it and then yeah offensively they’re using him through screens they’re they’re not afraid if the ball ends up in his hands a little bit here and they he can attack a close out and do that type of stuff so you know his age is showing his experience and kind of knowhow are showing and for an undrafted player you know probably could have gotten drafted that’s always my caveat with those types of guys but um yeah he looks good he does and I think back to Gillespie and him like if they’re both spending time in the G League at the with the valley SS at all I’m that will be cinema right there and and look I was dis pointed that gpie didn’t get an opportunity to play with this team is I think he’s the type of player that brings out the best in guys like Oso and dun and bridges so yeah to me that’s that’s kind of um I know you wanted to talk about that but I think Les’s just that type of player and bridges specifically I think would benefit a lot from being in and done as well I think wings that really can’t create are just super limited when it comes to like summer league context where it’s mostly guards just trying to get their own or making name for themsel and it’s not really that pure NBA flow of just free flowing offense and spacing so that’s that’s where I think there’s sort of a disservice for trying to take too much away from uh these players and even David Rody to an extent like it’s there’s certain players that I think are trying to do more than they should and some that are doing less than you’d like to see them do yeah the sun’s kind of went over for two in terms of roster construction I think we can say now after having seen it for two games where they don’t have great highle Creator or Elite shooting which you know again like we’re talking about exhibition games that’s like the feeder system for the minor league you know it sounds dumb to be like they don’t have enough Talent on their summer league team but like it is limiting some of these guys that that we want to see stuff from in in its own way Bridges to me you know as an example of that all of his shots were threes today and that was kind of the book on him coming out of college was like well he’s just going to be a shooter from three but again if you’re talking about an undrafted player who seems to be pretty instinctive and has decent size and all the you know can that guy be a ninth man is kind of like the question I feel good about it after you know what we saw at Baylor and now uh what he’s been able to do here so far in limited minutes just kind of translating to the Pro game but yeah back to kesie it sounds like according to him from an interview with Dwayne Rankin and Gerald borget at summer league today on Tuesday that it was just a timing thing like Camp had kind of already broken in Denver and he thought he might stay there and then by the time he got the call from the Suns and ended up jumping to a two-way in Phoenix now the summer league program had kind of already gotten off the ground and it just there wasn’t a spot for him which you know he’s been around for a couple years now in the NBA he was an older college player it’s not like he needs this but I think you’re right it would have been nice to to at least see his impact on the other guys if not for himself but the LA the only point I’ll make on Gillespie to kind of bounce off of of all the good things you said which I agree with is that honestly this is you know going to sound like obvious archetype stuff but watching rid Shepard in summer league has gotten me thinking that um if gespi can consistently make pull-up jumpers and especially if he can extend his range on that to be making pull-up threes then he’s going to be an NBA player because that’s just going to be a bankable thing he can threaten the defense with we know he can be a floor General we know he can kind of drive and kick as needed but if he can bend the defense by having to respect him as a pull-up threat at both the midi and three-point level then I see no reason why he won’t be I mean he’s dominated at both levels that he’s played at between college and and the g league and the skill sets there I mean that that was kind of the thing that I heard push back on actually with Tyler KCK is well he can’t really like he’s not a high volume Dynamic pullup shooter so if he’s not a great athlete and he can’t do that and the finishing is going to be a question at the NBA level that was kind of the case against kic but on the other side with Gillespie I’m like well I already see one of those ingredients he can make those jumpers and I mean if he proves that’s real again in the G League like we might be talking about him getting a roster spot on the Suns like this year yeah no I think honestly he’s just a more uh I mean there’s a lot of suns fans that wanted klech for for several reasons but I think Gillespie is just a more Ready to Go version of that with possibly more bankable skills well like we’ll see we have to see it in Action a little smaller right like you know let’s not ignore that but I could see Gillespie being a better NBA player when it’s all said and done than kic I mean it wouldn’t be crazy yeah I’m always going to bet on the Villanova guys too like they they just figure it out I mean you’re going to miss a couple times but most of the time those guys are going to figure a way to work out and like just the high IQ play that he brings to the table and I think he could really compliment the some of the sun stars like as soon like right away like to me if Morris got hurt or if one of their guards went down like there there’s a chance you could see him getting minutes like soon so I think uh obviously that’s you don’t want that to happen but it’s it’s a long season so it’s better to have options like that ready to go yeah I mean did point to the one guy from Villanova that guard wise that hasn’t worked out you would you would say Ryan Archie did Archie diako but he had I mean still like a seven-year career where he bounced around in NBA on NBA teams and for him it was the same conversation he never really turned into a high volume efficient three-point shooter whereas in the g-league last year Gillespie uh was that he averaged eight threes a game in 40 minutes across eight games played and made 40% of them and in college he also was a more consistent three-point shooter than AR diako so I don’t know if that shot is real and it can be off of you know pulling up not just you know he’s not going to get a lot of catch and shoot opportunities because if he’s out there the ball’s going to be in his hands a lot if he can make the pull up three consistently and and and that midi then to me it’s like you’re starting from a very very good place so the answer very well could be him too you know he’s proven more than Jaylen Brides of course he’s been in the league already yeah I mean he put up 20110 and 10 and his his uh League stin last year obviously it wasn’t a huge sample size but that’s that’s the type of dominance you want to see when you send a guy to the G League that’s what you want to see with from a guy like a David Rody who you’re sending to Summer League that we’re not seeing so that’s why to me I think Gillespie’s I would put him over Rody too as far as like on that ladder as far as like just long-term Outlook with fit with the Suns and just as an NBA player in general do any of the other guys stand out to you who we’ve seen on the summer Suns boo buoy has been a un fortunately a little bit of a disappointment uh relative to the hype yeah uh not really I mean devau shown a couple nice things like there’s not really anyone like shout out to to weather spoon uh had a nice game today there was some moments where he was frustrating but he’s out there to get a contract he’s like he is I’m going to be I’m going to be somewhere in Europe or somewhere in the G League getting buckets and the scouts here need to write me a check before I leave the building that is quer weatherspoon’s uh number one job right now and you’d think he’d be a little more focused on like the team aspects and he is technically on the valley Suns they had they added him in that expansion draft so I was thinking he would there’d be a little more Synergy there but uh but it’s when you’re in the moment I feel like a lot of these guys they’re look I I don’t blame them like you’re fighting for your life to get another contract so you feel like you have to do so much in such a short amount of time that you’re going to force stuff it’s not like this is the only team that’s happening with if you look around the league summer league is a brutal to watch uh there’s fun moments absolutely but there’s the guard play is typically and what’s funny is it kind of does pay off with some of these guys right like you we all make fun of the dudes who it’s like oh he’s just out there to get a deal but then you know Keaton Wallace in Atlanta or that uh R guy who yeah that’s his name cloudin who uh who killed the Suns the other night and and whatever it’s like um what are you going to do that you can’t argue with it they were it worked for them you know they they they produced and then they ended up with some money in their hands so but yeah I I agree I don’t really feel like there’s been let me put it this way I don’t think the Suns have found their third two-way player on this summer league roster no I I agree there okay all right so we’ll see maybe they’ll poach somebody else’s guys maybe maybe we got to go back and see if there’s anyone on Golden State or Indiana that might actually have turn their heads and and get that deal from them um I don’t know if people like Enrique Freeman is he already on a TWA with Indiana maybe he’s going to be the next uh Sons guy Oscar sheway potentially I don’t think he can make a be on a tway anymore I think he might be too old but all right that’ll wrap us up three burning questions asked and answered hit follow hit subscribe we’ll have another episode tomorrow with Stephen pjon Garner we will have another one to close out the week Friday as another scrimmage in Team USA and another Summer League game come upon us should be fun hopefully if you’re a basketball nerd if you’re a son’s nerd you should care about this stuff so I’ll have episodes for you be here I’ll talk to you then
