for everyone every day all summer long visit fanduel.com today to get started you’ll hear more about FanDuel a little bit later in today’s episode we’re gonna be talking about the matchup between the former teammates at the g-league ignite the fifth overall pick in Ron Holland and the 11th overall pick in matz buellis for the Chicago Bulls got to see that match up how did that go also we’re going to talk about Tobias Harris the leader in today’s episode and also Bobby Clinton continues to impress we’ll talk about that a little later as well but obviously the highlight of this game this third Summer League game the highlight of the night was the fifth overall pick in Ry Holland going against montz bzel who again they were former teammates at the g-league ignite this past season before the draft um it was a really intriguing matchup uh and a lot of people looking forward to it especially I think more so because Matas had a really crazy game um uh the game before this one he had 28 points in that last game so a lot of people were looking forward to seeing how he would play um he had I think he had more eyes outside like nationally watching this game because he had such a good game but then also Pistons fans Ron Holland was coming back after not playing the previous game due to rest which I like I’ve said before I I don’t really get the whole resting in summer league but is what it is um so how did this game go for for this for this matchup well I think it started out pretty rough for Ron Holland and the Detroit Pistons to start the game off Matas balis was going I thought nuts he was playing incredibly well he was showcasing just about every part of his game in the first half I would say uh ball handling his ability to drive his ability to create some of his defense he ended up with four blocks in this game so I thought early on Matas was really dominating the the matchup um especially like I said in the first half and I believe Ron Holland started off the game three of 12 um so he was struggling to start the game up but he did start to get himself into a little bit of a Groove um he ended the game with 17 points nine rebounds and three assists he did shoot seven of 20 from the field but I feel like in the second half I you remember how last episode I spoke about how he is Relentless and going to the rim it did not matter that he was three or2 he just kept going kept going and kept going and kept going so he was relentless no matter what the stat line said and it ended up rewarding him with 17 points he ended up getting again getting to the free throw line three times he had six free throw attempts now he only hit two of those free throws but again Relentless to the rim getting himself enough uh looks at The Rim to where he is going to put some points on the board and also draw fouls um but like I said in the last episode I think in this game you also saw Ron G himself into some tough situations where he was forced to take some unorthodox shots some wild shots some just forced shots because he got himself into some tough predicaments because of his relentlessness going to the rim and trying to force a drive every possession however that’s just the offensive end the defensive end it looked like Ron Holland was put on to Matas after the after like the first half more so in the second half I thought he did a really good job staying in front of balis did a really good job trying to you know frustrate him uh make him have a little bit more of an inefficient game because it looked like for a second that he was on his way to having a really great efficient game but he ended up ending the game B as that is seven of 18 I think a lot of that had to do with Ron getting into him and playing physical defense so I think that was a real positive for Ron Holland in this game overall the matchup itself uh I think it could have been a little better I’m not gonna lie to you I feel like mattas shined early um and then Ron just kept like steady you know going after going after going after after it um but I feel like it could have been a little better if both guys were playing extremely well the entire game it could have been a really fun one the Pistons found themselves down by like 15 again in the first half had to fight their way back they did end up winning the game but like they traded the the Pistons and the Bulls they traded terrible halves like in the first half the Pistons had another horrific half and then the second half the Bulls had a horrific half so it was just an uneven game overall to watch but between those two I think you saw flashes from the both of them for why they were so heavily recruited why they were so highly thought of before the draft you saw the ball handling in the creation um in in the defense from Matas I think you saw the relentlessness the athleticism from Ron the defense from Ron the ability to get on the glass from Ron I think you saw all that and again you saw flashes from both of them I think you saw reason to look at Ron and say okay we can see why he’s 19 years old he has to improve his strength he has to improve with his sh shot selection he has to improve his strength with the ball uh on drive to the rim he’s a little loose with the ball a lot of his drives he’s fumbling the ball I think with Matas you saw that he can still get a Little Bit Stronger that his shot is still a little inconsistent so I again you saw flashes from both guys I don’t think it was a perfect game from either one um but the Pistons ended up winning the game so I think Ron Holland ends up getting the final laugh um but with my final note real quick before we move on on Ron Holland I think his athleticism is jumping off the charts like you you see the athleticism when you watch the games but you are I think you are seeing why he is not going to be a rotation player this season I don’t think he’s expected to be I don’t think Tran expects him to be I don’t think JB bigger staff expecting him to be but there were quite a few Pistons fans that expected him to be a part of the rotation were already like kind of penciling in some minutes for him at the start of this season I’m not sure I see that I I don’t think that he’s ready for that at least from what you see so far in the summer league I think you you see the flashes but you see why he’s more of a work in progress a young Prospect with a high ceiling but needs work and development I think you’re going to see them take it slower with Ron Holland this upcoming season I think you’ll see him a lot in the G league and again that’s not a bad thing I don’t think that’s a bad thing I just think you’re seeing why you need to be a little bit more patient with Ron Holland you need to let him develop you need to let the Pistons take their time crafting him as a player and allowing him that that patience and that time to get better um at at his game um but like I said you see the flashes I just I think you clearly see why you should not be expecting stuff from him immediately but defensively I I like I said you saw him get into Matas and and really frustr him some um and again his relentlessness it shows up not just on drives it shows up on offensive rebounds like there was a time where um Bobby clitman was leaked out all the way on the on the fast bre they throw it up to him and he sees Ron trailing he throws it behind the back pass Ron goes up for a dunk he gets blocked and instead of giving up on the play immediately grabs the ball back and does like a 360 standing vert dunk like maybe not 360 what is it 180 a 180 standing vert dunk like and that’s all just effort in Relentless is to get to the basketball there was a few times where he turned the ball over and then he’s just running fast as possible as soon as he turned the ball over like he has a Relentless motor you see that um and he talks like a mature guy as well you saw his interview in the third quarter at the end of the third quarter with I foret who the sideline reporter was but talks like a very mature person uh again Relentless motor there’s reasons to like Ron moving forward I just think that Pistons fans are going to need to be a little patient and and and allow him to develop at his own pace and don’t try to push him in or expect him to be a rotation guy out the gate I don’t think that’s what’s going to happen for him um initially with the Detroit Pistons but fun matchup uh between Holland and buellis um there was a little it got a little chippy too by the way Ron Holland got technical foul Matas was talking a loud trash throughout the game so it was a fun you know it had it had moments where it was a fun game but it’s summer league basketball it’s gonna be hard especially this year in summer league I don’t feel like the summer league basketball this year has even been as good as past years in summer league and summer league itself is not good basketball so the fact that it’s not good basketball and then you’re not even meeting the levels of the last few years of Sumer league basketball like yeah it’s it’s not going to be fun basketball but there were spurts for both these young guys that that was pretty fun so let me know in the comments section down below or over on Twitter cuka Hill how you guys felt about this matchup and how you felt about this game was it fun did you enjoy watching it good bad takeaways let me know in the comment section down below um Tobias Harris a lot of talk has been made about Tobias Harris as the player uh how much he’s getting paid how many you know how much of an impact is he gonna have on the floor next year for the Detroit Pistons as a player but maybe there needs to be more talk about him as a leader for this young piston Squad this podcast platforms if you haven’t already head to the YouTube channel at lockon Pistons hit that subscribe button or leave us a festar review on whatever podcast platform you’re listening to this on that’s another great way to support the podcast for those of you guys who have been like loyal listeners of the podcast for for a while now um when I say a while I mean like a few years you know that every summer I come on the podcast and I had to complain about how damn hot it is in my apartment I don’t know what it is about this apartment complex and and the AC going on off on off but man this like the last few weeks every time I record in this room I am just like burning the hell up I feel like I’m going to melt in here like this is ridiculous this is absolutely ridiculous my God but anyways back to the Pistons um Tobias Harris obviously I think was the biggest um addition to the team I don’t think that there’s much argument when it comes to players not like the GM and president B operations or head coach as a player I don’t think there’s much like argument that Tobias sis was the biggest addition for the Detroit Pistons this off season um and we’ve talked about Tobias a lot on the podcast obviously and I’ve mostly stayed um I’ve mostly talked about him as a player because a lot of to talk about Tobias as a player I felt like was just dumb and not true not rooted in reality more so rooted in trolling and and and trolling becoming reality for some reason reason like that that that’s where I focused a lot of my discussion about Tobias because I felt like it was a lot of just dumb talk about him as a basketball player um but we haven’t talked about him as much when it comes to him as a leader um and there was a report that came out as of today or last night um from Jake fiser of Yahoo sports and he said that the Pistons believe that Tobias Harris can be a foundational leader uh during Detroit’s rebuild um and that’s one of the reasons why they really went after him in free agency another one of the reasons why they went after him in free agency I I I’ve said this on the podcast before multiple times I see some Pistons fans acting shocked about this maybe if they were loyal listeners to lockon Pistons the daily listener the first listen of every single day you feel me they would have already known this but I guess I’ll go ahead and say it again um Tobias was interviewed during the game this summer league game that um he has a special or Detroit has a special place in his heart um from his first time around in Detroit he’s always liked Detroit he’s always loved Detroit and he mentioned that he’s met his wife here in Detroit and that his wife is from Detroit and they obviously got married so you know and that had a big reason why he wanted to come back here you know and that’s why I spoke about in the podcast a lot that might as well just pencil in Tobias Harris as a piston all throughout the season because toas has been trying to get to Detroit for a minute I’m telling you guys that now I don’t know if I’ve said that part in the podcast but I can tell you guys for a fact that it wasn’t just this past season Tobias Harris had been wanting to come back to Detroit for a minute um so but I have mentioned to you guys that you know he met his wife and has Family Ties he comes back during the offseason like that there’s a lot to do with why he wanted to come back to Detroit but nonetheless moving past that um having a player of Tobias Harris’s caliber a guy who’s been in the league 13 this is about to be his 14th season in the NBA a guy who has been a part of rebuilding teams losing teams who has been a part of middling teams Orlando with the losing teams you had been a part of middling teams with the Pistons back in 15 16 being a part of contenders having that type of expectation on you with the Philadelphia 76ers Tobias Harris has seen it all Tobias Harris has seen it all through the NBA and just to talk about him as a player as a as a as a him as a prospect debias Harris came into the league really young and he had to develop he didn’t just come into the NBA instantly as good as he is now this a guy who came into the league in Milwaukee 19 years old averaged Five Points a game he didn’t play great initially he had to develop to get to where he was it wasn’t a guy that was an incredible three-point shooter his whole career his first three season in the NBA he shot around 30% from deep it wasn’t until really like his second year in Detroit where he really popped as a three-point shooter and developed that part of his game so this is a guy who knows the hard work that goes into becoming a good NBA player he wasn’t just gifted you know I guess you would say just God given immediate impact player in the NBA no he had to develop that himself he had to have some outlier development himself had to put in that work to become the player he is now he’s seen all kinds of different aspects of the NBA when it comes to the worst team a middling team a contending team he has a lot of experience under his belt while not being too incredibly old like he’s 32 years old I know that’s not young in NBA years but I don’t know if 32 is like super old especially in today’s NBA so he’s still I would say like not too old has seen it all has went through the whole process as a basketball player development wise he can talk to these players he can lead these players he can speak from from experience to these guys all of them Kade assar Jaye Ivy Jaylen Duran Ron Holland whoever you want to say Isaiah Stewart any of the young guys any young guy you want to mention he can speak to these guys from experience and one of the main things that I think really helps to that is what we were mentioning earlier the fact that he wants to be here there are veterans that have been around in Detroit there have been some recent veterans that have been in Detroit that did not want to be here there are some recent guys that were veterans in Detroit that did not want to be here Tobias Harris is a guy that wants to be here he wants to be in Detroit he wants to be a piston he wants to see this team do well he wants to see this team grow he wants to be a part of this team growing he wants to see these young guys do well he wants to see these young guys do well and the team do well for the city therefore there’s motivation behind it there’s a want to to it you can have a veteran and he’s in the locker room and his role is to be a veteran but if there’s not passion or want to behind it how how authentic do you think that is to the players receiving it do you guys think that they feel like it’s authentic that’s transparent no and that’s just the that’s just the truth of some of the things that have happened over the last few years I’m telling you guys this now that’s just the truth to it so the fact that you can bring in a guy like Tobias who wants to be here who wants to develop these guys who wants to lead these guys who wants to take on that role it’s big time and another big part of that as well is that there’s a lot of veterans that you can get that okay maybe they want to come in and be a vet and lead by example but they can’t necessarily lead by example because they’re not that good anymore Tobias Harris is still a pretty good basketball player he we’ve talked about this a lot man this past season he averaged 17 points a game 49% from the field 35% from Deep 88% from the fatza line like that that’s incredibly efficient he is an efficient basketball player he is a good basketball player over the last four years we’ve talked about this many times over the last four years is basically the exact same thing 17 points a game 50% from the field nearly 38% from Deep 87% from the free throw line like this is a guy who is still a good player so he’s not just saying this stuff to the players and then you know can’t really show them like I don’t care what anyone says and look there’s value to having vets like a Todd Gibson let’s say last season that can’t really play anymore but are strong like personalities there there are you know there are benefits to that but I’m telling you guys this right now I don’t care what anyone says there is a difference between having a vet that can tell you what to do and is and is and you know trying to help you develop but it’s just not a good enough player to really show you how to do any of those things because some players it goes in one year out the other some players it’s like dude you’re telling me to do this you tell me I made this mistake you can’t even play why are you trying to talk to me like that’s just the reality of the situation that’s how some players receive it it it’s a little it hits different the punch hits different when it’s coming from hey you got to do this you got to do that you’re not doing this hey we need to do it this way from I’m a player who’s playing 30 minutes a night and actually is a good basketball player and is playing the right way and can be an impactful player like it hits different from those guys two young guys and especially certain players who would just have it go out go in one year and out the other with a veteran that maybe can’t play as much anymore they can’t really do it on the court so all of that and that’s not even you know I know we kind of talked about Tobias as a player but that’s really just him off the court that’s really just him as a personality him as just a player as a leader as a veteran and at the end of the third quarter they interviewed Tobias during this summer league game and again he spoke about how you know he spoke about how he met his wife in Detroit how he wanted to be in Detroit he wants to be here but he spoke about how he’s really accepting and and you know proud it felt like proud that this is his role not that you know oh I’m stuck here so I have to be a veteran you know that’s what my contract says like no he seems like he’s proud to take on this role for this team wants to see everyone develop like he takes pride in it so I do think that impacts people I do think that impacts a team and I do think that impacts the players I know it’s not something that pops up in the box score and this is probably GNA go over some listeners heads and some people saying C you’re being too sentimental you’re being you know none of this really matters I’m telling you guys it does I’m telling you guys from people I’ve talked to over the last few years things I’ve heard from players over the last few years that kind of stuff matters it 100% impacts your team and impacts your culture and it impacts the locker room Dynamic and environment so I think this is I don’t know if I won’t come on here and be foolish and say he gonna impact them more than Tobias on the floor like obviously not I’m not gonna be dumb about that I Tobias on the floor as a player obviously he’s gonna be pretty impactful hopefully but this part of it as well is going to be incredibly impactful too and it makes sense why they wanted him to be a part of Detroit so badly and why he wanted to get back to Detroit so badly so I think this is a win-win I I don’t really anyone who still doesn’t like this deal like I don’t get it but yeah I I think this is a really good signing for both sides Tobias and the Pistons and I I really do think you’ll see it pay dividends um throughout the season um like Ashton said a few episodes ago Tobias is already in the gym working with these guys it’s what is it July 16th he’s a veteran he doesn’t need to be working this early in the offseason he doesn’t need to be working with the young guys yet but he is so like I think this is an incredible relationship the Pistons have going on and why they you know a good signing that they brought in to get Tobias in here not just as a player but as a leader so let me know in the comment section down below or over on Twitter cah Hill how you guys feel about that do you guys are you guys moved by Tobias as a leader are you guys just dismissive of it what do you guys think comment section down below or over on Twitter at cooky Hill when we come back Bobby Clinton look don’t look at the box score just just don’t I don’t care about the box score after this game if if there’s one player I can say that has consistently impressed me and I think should be in consistently impressing Pistons fans it’s Bobby Clinton I love sports I’ve loved them my whole life I’ve played them my whole life I love them so much that I never really want them to stop but as the playoffs have winded down we get fewer games and the sports aren’t sporting like I want them to but with FanDuel they let me keep the sports going whenever I want all I have to do is open the extremely fun to use so again head over to fanduel.com and start making the most out of your summer that’s what FanDuel the official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball so I want to thank you guys again for making lock on Pistons your first listen of every single day fre podcast platforms if you haven’t already head to the YouTube channel at loon Pistons hit that subscribe button or leave us a five star review on whatever podcast platform you’re listening to this on that’s another great way to support the podcast a player who has been the most impressive to me I’m I’m I’m not even joking I’m not exaggerating the player who has been by far the most impressive player on this team for the Pistons in summer league has been Bobby Clinton and you may be saying to me after the third game cou he only had five points he shot two of seven from this from the field in this game how is he still impressing you this much if you watch the game Bobby Clinton and the first two games he shot the ball really well and was really efficient scoring the ball this is just this one he wasn’t as aggressive again I’m going to continue to point out that I think the fact that the Pistons don’t have a point guard on this team is an incredible disservice to not just clitman but Ron Holland to Jenkins to Sasser to every player in the roster fact that they don’t really have a point guard like they are they are struggling to get into half court sets like there were two plays where sard just stra up lost the ball dribbling up the floor there was a few times where oh my God I forget the broadcaster’s name former coach former coach of the year what’s is it Mitchell I could I think it’s Sam Mitchell but I could be off of that but either way there was a few times he even mentioning that hey these guards are dribbling too much now you’re getting into late offense and the late shot clock you’re not going to create a good shot and at like nine seconds they finally got the first pass off and of course they ended up forcing a bad shot either way my point is is that them not having a point guard is really hurting everybody and especially offensively obviously in the half court um anyways um but in this game if you watch this game I don’t know how you are not impressed by Bobby Clinton’s overall awareness his IQ his ability to play the right way and I’m going to tell you guys this guy know immediately as soon as I say this you guys are already thinking well Co you said this about Isaiah liers well yes I did say that about Isaiah liers he did play the right way I thought I thought he did have high IQ there was two things that held Isaiah livers back I think one injuries obviously and two I feel like there was a want to from Isaiah livers to be more than what he was he wanted wanted to show that he could be more and I felt like that really started to hurt him in this past season with the Pistons and towards the back end of the second season with the Pistons just but just to get that out the way I know you guys are gonna mention that but that’s not why I’m I’m going to say they’re different they’re different because it’s not the same type of play the right way high IQ players clemon is making quick processing reads he is processing the floor really well because it’s not and that doesn’t just mean processing it also means he has incredible Court awareness he knows where he is on the floor he knows where his teammates are on the floor and he knows once he catches the ball how the defense is going to react and he makes quick quick decisions with it not just the extra pass to the corner or the extra pass to the top of the key at the three-point line like simple ones like that that are are important that stuff is important to the the fluidity of the offense but not just simple ones like that I’m talking about ability to put the ball on the deck take one dribble and make the right play the ability to have do set a screen in the short roll and make a crosscourt skip pass he made that pass twice tonight he made multiple live reads or live dribble reads which simply means you’re dribbling the ball and have to make a read instead of catching and making a read it’s a little harder obviously um he made a few of those his passing around the basket uh getting defenses to come to him get them up in the air and then find a big man is incredibly impressive he only had three assists tonight but I’m telling you he should have had like six or seven the Pistons big man just couldn’t finished the ball or they got fouled and they couldn’t finish it not to mention the play that he had to Ryan H that we talked about earlier when he threw it behind his back that’s another just I know where I’m at I know I have a teammate trailing me I know the defense can come to me I’m just GNA trust my instincts and make this pass like that is all stuff that is incredibly impressive to see from a guy especially his size like those are you know how there there was this interview um not not interview there was this presser going viral the other day I think it was like a week and a half ago it was from Jared Dudley and it was him talking about he’s the assistant coach now the Mavs I think he’s the head coach of their summer league team or one of the coaches whatever but anyways there was a there was a person that went live with him tomorrow or not I’m sorry I read a text message about tomorrow there was there was a press that went viral from him where he’s talking about in summer league a lot of players don’t really understand what you’re looking for from them you’re not looking for a guy who is going out there and trying to score 28 points a game but realistically that guy is not going to be good enough to try to score that much in the NBA and you don’t need guys to do that you already have guys on your NBA team who’s supposed to be the scorers that’s not what you’re asking of guys who are trying to fight the way in the NBA or try to make a role in the NBA get a role in the NBA you want to see them show that they are they are capable of playing the right way making the the tiny details that maybe the Casual fan doesn’t pick up on but that NBA coaches Scouts Talent evaluators people who analyze the game notice that keep the offense going that create a good offense not just offensively obviously but also defensively like the right rotations making the right Ro right pass boxing out the right time you know all that stuff is what gets you into the NBA to play a role in the NBA and Bobby clitman is showcasing all those things what he isn’t showcasing he’s not a one-on-one player he’s not someone you want creating the ball creating offense for himself that’s not what you want from him but that’s probably what you don’t need that from him that’s not what you’re looking for from a second round pick that’s not you’re looking for a guy who can play a role thrive in his role and help Elevate the offense by playing well within that role and that’s something he is showcasing to me so far through three Summer League games to make me believe in that eventual ceiling I don’t think he’s gonna be able to do it instantly in the NBA but all I’m seeing from him from him is a guy who processes the game incredibly well who has high IQ makes the right play as incredible Court awareness and you know after the first game I talked about how he wasn’t very active on the glass last two games he’s been incredibly active on the glass I believe last game he had nine this game he had 12 rebounds incredibly active was physical on the glass just doing what the team needs him to do when he’s hitting threes when he’s at least getting up threes you only got one three up in this game which again points to while I was talking about with not really having a point guard create advantages for him but all he’s showcasing to me is that he knows how to play the game the right way he has ability he has a really nice um ability to to uh playmake at his size and this is a little nugget for you guys I was talking with some people who do a lot of scouting and they told me that he actually played point guard um I forget where he played point it was before he went to Wake Forest he actually was playing point guard for his team I forget where it was but he had played point guard in his career at some point and that’s popping for me in summer league so I think Clinton’s been incredibly imp impressive to me um defensively he’s been active as well he had a few switch outs on the perimeter that I thought he held his own really well um I don’t like like again he’s not the number one overall pick he’s not gonna be out there being a superstar he’s never gonna be an All-Star like that’s not what he is but what he’s showcasing to me is that he can be a role player that he can be an impactful role player at some point in his career because of how well he process he has to get better he has to get better in areas obviously but I I think there I don’t know how he isn’t the most impressive player so far through summer league like he just looks like an incredibly smart basketball player and that gets you places so that’s my takeaway um let me know if you guys agree disagree in the comment section down below or over on Twitter at Cook that’s all I’ve got for you guys today thank you guys for making lock on Pistons your first list of every single day rear podcast platforms hit that subscribe button the YouTube channel leave us a five star review whatever podcast platform you’re listening to us on and until next time I’ll see you guys later stay safe out there till next time peace out

Former G-League Ignite teammates Ron Holland and Matas Buzelis faced off in the Detroit Pistons’ third Summer League game, which ended with the Pistons’ fifth overall pick getting the last laugh.

  1. How could it possibly be our first listen of the day of our Pistons? We're fans and this comes out at 10:15 at night. Lol we've already seen other shows today. Just messing with you Ku keep up the good work.

  2. 1st Listen. Ku my guy as always, I appreciate your work and I be looking forward to the show. I love it man. Keep up the great work brother. Let's get that 10K and GO PISTONS!!

  3. So far Bobi looks more NBA ready than Ron Holland. To me he looks more NBA ready than any of young guys on the Pistons not named Cade. I know it summer league. I form opinions on what I see not on what they might become. I don't care where he was drafted.

  4. Klintman is the type of player Presti would draft. Really refreshing pick for this franchise. Trajan needs to find the best PG possible to help Ron in the g-league. He has to be better off–ball before he gets more on-ball reps

  5. Hollands fit with our team is just not good. He has a lot of potential but he isn’t going to help the team this year. Completely agree with Ku he will be in the G league this year

  6. I would have gone Castle or Sheppard so really can't fault the Pistons for picking Holland. No clear pick at 5. Buzelis has a cocky attitude which could sink or swim him.
