How To Do The “Little Things” (Jared McCain Breakdown)

How To Do The “Little Things” (Jared McCain Breakdown)

Jared McCain is 6’2 with a 63 and A2 wingspan and a 33in vert so when he gets in spots like this how can he score against a player who is probably 67 68 with a 610 or 611 wingspan and probably like a 36 in vert watch Jerry McCain that right there that bump to his body to his chest when he got into his angles is what got him his angle even when he gets past the big and he gets that L I’m telling you it be the it’ be the little things that right there that’s the little things that one bump alone and once you also understand the fact that it’s not about how much muscle mass I have on my frame more so than it is about how well I know how to navigate my body in space to apply Force imply contact to my Defender so I could create space all because the Defenders pick you up full court doesn’t mean they’re playing good defense watch Jared McCain right he throws the ball in he gets the ball back watch his Defender base he picks up on him lazy as right and watch what Jared McCain does I turn him once I turn him twice and now once I get right inside a half court and now I’m in attacking range I accelerate and get to the rim because you’re actually lazy in your full-court press defense right and he not only did that once notice what he’s going to do same same exact scenario just in a different game this is habit at this point right he’s got his Defender watch his defensive base he’s just simply going along doing just trying to stay in front he’s jogging he gets turn once he gets turned twice right inside that half court boom I accelerate hit you with that bump create that space from that bump get into my float you hit my arm that’s a foul all you really got to do in those scenarios as a ball handler is just stay calm and stay poised one and change direction too because when you get to changeing directions when you make him turn that’s when they’re going to have to flip open their base turn the whole other direction and now they’re no longer able to stay in front legally so now the way they guard you is not going to be as effective as if they’re just squared and standing straight up and you’re just trying to do straight line drives understand what Jer McCain is going to do off the ball right he gets sent Away by 11 goes down here knows he’s got to set this down screen and as he sets this down screen he’s not just going to be a dummy afterwards what he’s going to do is recognize what’s going to occur in this action with this ball screen and now with him being at the Block he understands that all right we got 30 who’s going to end up rolling that means there’s got to be someone to tag and my man is sitting down here in the at the nail just watching the action so that means he’s going to be stuck down here in the paint and I got to get a screen set on whoever is going to pick up on me so he points to his teammate in the corner who is not even reading the action like Jared McCain is and so what ends up happening his teammate is late on this and now now the screen occurs a little too late and now he has to take a shot that’s a little tougher than it should have been if everything was in sync he’s really just a step ahead of that entire play according to his other teammates and just off that alone you don’t see a 20-year-old a first year player be able to do that you do not and that’s how he makes up for his athleticism right there the little things a little things you get them around players who also think the same going to generate a lot of high quality looks Jared McCain really has a pro mind but most importantly Pro habits highlevel habits meaning that in scenarios like this for him just to even understand the fact that I got contact coming off the screen I’mma go up I should get a foul even though he didn’t get it his simple awareness of that shows you how how much smarter he is than the players at his age right and not only did he do that he may have his hands in the air complaining but he not going to sit there complain like a Luca donic no shade really Luca just be doing that a lot you know what I’m saying first person come to mind he’s actually going to go and get back on defense and he ends up getting the steal because they threw a bad pass and on top of the Steal he gets an assist so although he made a he made a decision to do something as to which he’s not at the level or expertise to get the call for at least he got back at least he went then play defense and now going back to the pro mind right the high level habits that he has as a younger player understand one thing that a lot of young guards don’t have seeking contact and also knowing how to utilize contact and then generate fouls right cuz pay attention when McCain gets off this screen here Defender tring the play and now as a ball handle in the situation your main goal really is to keep that Defender as far out the plate as you possibly can and put more pressure on this big as you get F closer to the rim and so does your roller and so what ends up happening as soon as he clears this recognizes his Defender has a solid angle I see contact boom first bump try to get that right there he Hollows out is able to get in front even though he’s in front I bump him a second time right bump him a second time and now understanding that with these bumps right here what tends to happen as soon as I hit a player directly in their chest especially after repetitive bumps is that their hands collapse and they use and now they enter illegal guarding position once again right there and that’s a third bump and he gets that foul right he’s just playing smart he’s just playing smart this is why I was saying he’s a mix of a Jaylen Brunson but in the role of an Austin reefs what also makes all off ball players Elite is screen setting just watch the screen that Jerry McCain sets right watch the screen that he sets he gets there early because he already knows what player they’re going to run so you don’t got to worry about a moving screen as much as a player who’s running up late like most bigs be doing because they forgot the play right and so now being stationary allows him to find the body of the player that he’s going to screen and now he actually hits and holds and so now off that switch boom foul call right there and then it makes it a lot tougher as a defense just to guard any action when you actually decide to set a good screen but the only thing that’s really going to stop a good screen from being set is a player who thinks a damn my coach told me to set a screen he don’t want me to get the ball I’m not going to do it but if you set a good screen the ball will eventually come back right around to you cuz you’re going to get somebody open and they’re going to force a chain reaction from the defense and before you know it you’re the one sitting there with the open three or right there again a layup or a floater promise these are the type of isolation plays y’all got to work on McCain got the rock 4.7 on the shot clock he catches one dribble cross gets cut off spin I see help and now boom I use my craftiness to finish at The Rim those quick goals those quick attacks whether you have a shot clock or not will probably be what’s best for you when you attack because when you decide to actually go and make some quick decisions you think less and you’ll probably make a better decision but your inability to trust your subconscious flow is what kills your ability to play at a high level so sometimes you got to let go and let yourself flow you’ll see this a lot out of Jaylen Brunson but in order for smaller players to to use dribble pull-ups and shots in mid-range you must be able to do this right McCain faces up his step here boom pointed to the rim Next Step another step pointed to the rim Next Step here same thing but he’s decell and gets into a pull-up and he’s only able to have that open of a look because his Drive sold a drive to the rim he did not try to go and rip and get out into space he took all the steps as if he was going to the rim which led his Defender down to the rim and now his Defender C even contest that because his momentum is leading him the opposite direction despite the miss extremely high quality look now a lot of y’all guards need to start doing this when you drive and you see help don’t try to go in around the help or through the help or over the help even though you know damn well you cannot do any of that when you got two on you you could just do something as simple as this stop turn and find the open man because is by someone stepping over there’s going to be somebody that’s open and by the relocation coming from 19 to that right wing he’s able to get that open three and get that bucket that’s all you got to do you can literally just stop your drive and turn around and then just give the ball up somewhere else instead of trying to do some dumb Knowing damn well you can’t do what you what you think you want to do you got Jared McCain on 55 that’s a huge size differential so much that his teammate is saying yo off ball switch Jerry McCain weighs him off right he weighs him off and in this scenario I wouldn’t trust a lot of guards to do what’s necessary to get a stop of 50 seconds and secure the rebound being down two but watch what jerem McCain does right shot goes up he actually decides to turn hit get low and when that ball comes down he doesn’t even jump for it he just makes sure he stays attached and now 55 gets called for the loose ball foul because Jeremy Kane decided to actually turn and make some contact onto a big when a shot went up the little things man I’m telling you it’s the little things

In his NBA Summer League 2024 debut with the Philadelphia 76ers, Jared McCain showed how he uses skill and does the “little things” to overcome size.

  1. Hey, could you make a breakdown of Cam Spencer? He was actually in some of these clips ^^ admittedly limited as a defender, but I really like his game. Shooting, creating, decision making, off-ball activity, patience and poise, playing off of two feet… I think he's great to learn from, lots of "little things" to discover.
    Always appreciate your insights!

  2. I’ve been knowing Jared since 7th grade. A lot of people don’t understand his ball control is elite. When we’d work out with Shea, and I’d pressure (as a smaller guard) he’d simply just use his strength to move me. So proud bro.

  3. i’ve always loved his game, so efficient and smart. imo the Spurs shoulda got him, him and Zack Eddey are underrated picks in the draft

  4. Jared and Bronny the same age? It's crazy the difference in their games because Bronny has had evert advantage a player could ask for growing up. Bronny has potential and can be decent one day but Jared McCain is NBA ready right now
