Why Thomas Bryant Rejoined the Miami Heat for Less Money

[Music] one [Applause] shot welcome back to the team to beat Miami Heat podcast my name is Amir before I get started on today’s episode just want to thank everybody for following the podcast on Spotify also want to thank you for watching on YouTube if you guys are watching on YouTube don’t forget to like comment share and subscribe so it’s time to pod y’all so this video is not going to be exciting because it’s about Thomas Bryant so I just saw an article talking about how Thomas Bryant decided to join the Miami Heat via free agency after he declined his player option so we all know the Miami Heat center Thomas Bryan is back with the Miami Heat on a new one-year minimum deal after he opted out of his player option before free agency began when he opted out of his free agency or opted out of his uh contract I thought he was going to be joining a new team via free agency so I was actually surprised that he declined and came back for a smaller contract he actually took $800,000 less to rejoin the Miami Heat which I thought made no sense from him personally as he’s 26 years old on his fourth NBA team now so I was surprised that he was willing to take a pay cut to play for a team where he barely cracked the rotation last season anyway um where their team was going through a lot of injuries throughout the season he had a lot of uh dnps so I was surprised um he initially wanted to test the the free agency Waters um in the league but ultimately decided to come back to Miami um and he wanted to see what was available but at the end of the day he said he liked the Miami organ organization and he quoted saying me and my agent we both talked and we thought just for us was to just look at the market and just to see what was available Brian said and for us it was never about any Misfortune or anything like that I love the Miami Heat personally I love the way that their culture is the coaching staff and the guys that they have around each other it was about just for myself as a player and everything individually of just what was else might be out there what potentially could be out there so yeah Thomas Bryan is going to join a Miami Heat roster that is filled with centers now at this point so we have bam AO and we have kle we Kevin Love essentially was playing as a backup center to Bay at bio last year in front of um both Thomas Bryant and Orlando Robinson and we know that Orlando Robinson was waved last week so the Miami Heat do seem to have more bigs this upcoming season um with their front Court of the me the players I mentioned but we also have um Nicola yic as well in that in that front court so I’m surprised again um I don’t understand why the Miami Heat brought him back again um I don’t know if that means they don’t have faith in kware to start the season in Miami um he might be playing more so in the G League to to get some time and experience and Reps there so I assume if you have Thomas Bryant resigned is he GNA be the backup center behind bab bio assuming that Kevin Love is going to be backing up uh nicoa yovic at the four because Kevin Love is a four he’s not a center he’s 6 fo8 he’s always played power forward um out of necessity he backed that bam atab bio so does this mean in terms of the depth chart it goes bam at a bio Thomas Bryant then kle Weare um it could be otherwise I don’t know why you would bring them back I would assume that the Miami Heat would want kware to get as many reps as possible behind bab bio so they can develop them quicker and give him that experience give him those 10 to 12 minutes per game behind bam atab bio assuming B manab bio is going to play anywhere from like 35 to 38 minutes per game so yeah I’m still perplexed on on why but apparently he also quoted and said Thomas Bryant that is said for me it’s just like there’s a lot of centers on any team um regarding the the back fi now it’s all about finding your way your Niche and everything on what the team needs from you Brian said for me personally I got great feedback from the guys in Miami and just knowing that there are the other guys out there of course everybody’s out there competing but for me it’s just seeing the guys are there and seeing what this organization brings to the table and everything I just feel like I fit the mold that the Miami Heat fit and produce out there so I feel like coming back to Miami was probably one of the better decisions that I made so Thomas Bryant still 26 can improve vastly on the defensive end um he is a big body he does have energy like he did bring passion Off the Bench when he was in the lineup um especially at the end of the year when Kevin Lev was injured he came in and played wasn’t horrible but he’s a veteran minimum guy like he’s a big body out there like just come in get some rebounds try to play some defense um don’t shoot as many threes as you did last year um even though he only took like one or two a game but still I think that’s too many for Thomas Bryant just stick to your role um and just play whenever your number is called upon which is hopefully minimally next season so anyway that’s all I have for today’s video thanks for watching

Thomas Bryant is back on a year deal with the Miami Heat.

  1. I am perplexed with your youtube post. Ware should start next to Bam. The guy is capable to start. I thought Bam should be a power forward and Miami selected Ware to bring size in the center position?

  2. He’s not gonna start he’s still a raw rookie Spo won’t start him he will need to get reps first off the bench

  3. Gimme a break! Nobody else wanted this stiff. What a waste of a roster spot. Why the hell did we give this guy a player option?!

  4. I don't think he signed for less. He turned down his player option for 2.8M and signed a 1 year minimum vet contract of about 2.8M. The difference is that on a 1 yr vet contract the cap hit is just 2.1M.

There is a conspiracy theory: (1)TB fully intended to exercise the player option (2) Miami asked him to do them a favor by declining the option with the understanding they would resign him to a 1 yr vet contract for the same amount. Doing so saved them around 800k plus any over the cap taxes on that.

  5. Nothing perplexing about it… Ware is a rookie playing a position that gets banged up quite often. There's a strong possibility he or Bam could get injured at some point. Beyond that is the rookie wall, Ware is a growing teenager his body will need adjustment to the new demands and he will need adjustment to his new body.

  6. Again what are you talking about he's not going to the g league if he shows good work in training camp he would start next to bam plus nikola jovic hurt he not gone start they should cut dru smith waive Alec Burks trade Thomas bryant or Kevin love move on from Josh Richardson sign Isaiah Stevens Josh Christopher Neal Sako alondes Williams but the lineup could go like this terry rozier Tyler Herro Jimmy Butler bam adebayo Kel'el Ware Isaiah Stevens pelle Larsson Keshad Johnson Jaime Jaquez Jr Kevin love zyon pullin cole swider duncan Robinson nikola jovic Thomas Bryant Richardson smith Burks haywood Highsmith
