The dilemma with Mathurin is that he’s statistically one of the worst defenders in the league. You can’t start him next to Tyrese Haliburton right now because of how bad his defense is. Nembhard and Nesmith are 10x the defenders that Mathurin is. Nembhard also has likely solidified himself as the starting shooting guard. Mathurin is also a SG.
I don’t think that Mathurin is going to stay on the bench for the rest of his career. He definitely has All-Star potential. As sad as it is to say, I believe there’s definitely a possibility that this could end up being a make or break season for Mathurin. If he doesnt improve on defense or become more consistent with his scoring and that prevents him from starting, then I don’t think he has a place on this team.
Do you agree or disagree? If you disagree, how long do you think we should keep developing him?
