Quickley and Barnes get more hype because they’re much more impactful players. RJ’s been really good and consistent for us but it’s still a very small sample and he still leaves a lot to be desired in some areas like his defense.

  2. Eclectic_Canadian

He got labelled as somewhat of a bust and a bad contract and it’s hard to shake that. Also he’s been in the league so long for his age so people don’t look at him as a young developing player with a lot of room to grow

Unless RJ significantly improves as a defender and can keep up his shooting splits, it won’t happen

Scottie is very clearly better than him as is, especially on that end of the floor

I’ll say this for RJ: It feels weird to talk about him going into what will be his 6th season given he’s only recently turned 24. Dude is younger than Branden Carlson.

The reason he’s been better in Toronto is because he doesn’t have the same level of responsibility.

Barnes and Quickly are the offensive initiators. Barrett gets buckets off those guys.

I think it’s great that RJ is growing into what should always have been his role, but he’s miscast as a primary playmaker and that’s why no one is hyping him like that.

It could be the style of his play. It’s not sexy. I mean I’ll take him for who he is but I’m sure it’s why people will take Kyrie Irving over a guy like Fred VanVleet, as a hypothetical scenario. One is overrated to some extent and one was underrated

Sample size is small, if he keeps this up for a full season then he will be in talks

RJ got pigeonholed into a primary creator role in NY due to his pick # and lack of perimeter talent in NY at the time. He’s putting up better stats as a complementary scorer with better efficiency in Toronto, still so young too.

This is his 6th season and he’s only just turned 24. We haven’t reached the ceiling with RJ yet, it’s close, but he’s still got a few seasons to grow.

I can see him being a fringe all star in 2-3 years when the Raptors start being a mid tier team possibly. Similar level to early year DeMar when he got more All Star nods over Kyle.

RJ is just not a good defender, he seems like a better playmaker than he was in New York, but its not a major gap. IQ and Scottie are more well rounded players than RJ, and have greater stats if you look beyond scoring and box scores. Even if you only look at the scoring, I don’t think RJ will be ahead of IQ and Barnes next season. As much as I love Scottie, it is 100% true that his performances went down due to the emotional impact of the OG trade, which I think has withered now. As for IQ, his shooting percentage went down once he came here, but they also forced him into comfortable positions for the purpose of development which I think will pay off soon.

Love RJ, this team needs a guy with his grit. But All Star…. I think its a reach. Lets see him put up those stats driving winning (wont be this year) and I think he could be a fringe All Star

Really looking forward to how this BBQ tastes!! Hope it’s smokey AF!

His time being good with the Raptors is far shorter than his time not meeting expectations in NY.

It takes more than a half season to make people consider you legit.

Just look at Mike James he was great with the Raps in 2006 and at best average for his other 15 years in the league.

  13. mfCooldawg

He my favorite player. RJ the GOAT. Maple Mamba

  14. Oshoninja

Small sample size but if he keeps it up he’ll get in the consideration for sure.

  15. its time for Quickley and Barnes to get paid so their agents hype them up. Next in line is Barrett

  16. His 4.5 seasons of inefficient offence and poor defence cannot be erased with a half season of solid offence and poor defence.

His time with the raps was promising and it is hopeful he is a better fit offensively in a system that relies on ball movement and a passing big. That said, he needs to improve as a defender so he can impact winning. If he does that, then all star is not out of the realm of possibility.

No, lol. Do you know what it takes to be an all-star besides some counting stats?

  18. DeBrickDeJordan

Copium is so real here. I’d love that but we’ve got to be realistic

  19. Lavarball93

He’s been good for us but he won’t be an all star unless the raps have a good season.

  20. He is great at what he does but to become an all star he needs to expand his game. Yes he perfected slashing and standstill shooting is solid.

Now we need more defense, consistent playmaking, shooting off movement or dribble. Add at least one of those and hes a star

  21. jjkiller26

He wont be an allstar, but if he keeps producing like that it’s still great and something to be excited about
