Stop Overthinking Klay Thompson in Dallas.
The Dallas Mavericks signing Klay Thompson has been one of the biggest moves of the entire offseason so far, and it’s drawn a wide range of opinions. At this point in his career, Klay Thompson is starting to show his age a ltitle bit, but that doesn’t mean he’s not still fully capable of being a productive player — in the right context.
In Dallas, Klay Thompson is gonna operating more as a third option, as opposed to the second option role that he was having to play alongside Steph Curry for the Golden State Warriors.
Now, he’s gonna be able to benefit from the immense scoring gravity that both Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving possess, similar to how Klay Thompson benefited from the gravity that Steph Curry and Kevin Durant had back in 2018.

Great vid 👍🏼
If the mavs stick klay in the corner and keep running kyrie luka your turn my turn instead of running any offball action they r gonna 0 banners in the next few years
Totally agreed. It's actually a really good fit. He will get incredible shots, defenders still fear him, and that's what matters. The Mavericks have a volume problem- They needed a guy who will shoot with confidence when he gets 10 open threes in a quarter, because Luka can generate that. But Mavs roleplayers have hesitated too much. Klay is a guy who you don't have to worry about – We know he could hit 6, 7, 8, 9 threes in a quarter if the defense is giving it to him
I like Klay fit with the mavs like other people I have my concerns with how well will their defense hold up with Luka, Kyrie, and Klay in the starting lineup together. But the mavs are accepting the trade off of getting worse defensively by getting much better offensively with Klay giving them elite spot up and movement shooting which became glaring weakness the deeper they got in the playoffs and especially in the finals.
Wiggins is SUPPOSED to be our 2nd option, but dude checked out of life after our last chip and he got his bag, so it forced Klay (who's playing on zero healthy legs) and Draymond (who's NEVER been a scorer) to be our "2nd option." Add to that Poole becoming a bum and us trading for CP3 for GOD knows why, and it was inevitable that we would miss the playoffs.
Keep keeping questioning our defense like it wasn’t top 5 post trade deadline and first in the playoffs
Yeah analyti s say klay was the worst guard on the team last year excluding gp2 and guys that dont play. The word great cannot apply. Dallas has gambled that hes not washed and will bounce ssomewhat back. Helluva gamble. Not sure i liked this one.
Not enough people are talking about the open shots that Lively/Gaff are going to get as rollers or when they set an off ball screen for Klay for a misdirection while Lively/Gaff rolls to the basket.
The Mavs will be a tough out.
Mavs are 100% clear favorites in the West 😂. OKC is the only team that can contend with them and I would take Dallas in 5-6 again.
Great take. Mavs kept the core intact and improved on the edges. The rest of the West also improved so should be a very interesting season. Can't wait for the upcoming season!!!
Klay Thompson still looks very good physically, even after his injuries. I think the problem is his mental game. In his prime, Klay took shots with confidence even if he was cold, because he always believed the next shot was going in.
Now, you can see he just doesn’t have that same belief in himself anymore. He’s spent the last few seasons trying to prove that he’s still the same guy, and he ends up forcing tough shots, getting upset with himself, then missing easy shots, and it just seems to spiral from there.
I feel for him bc he still clearly has the skills to be a productive piece on a winning team. Hopefully the change in scenery will help him reignite that fire.
Yeah that was part of the dilemma. Warriors needed Klay to be the #2, and he couldn't be that guy. Didn't want to get paid like a #3 option though. He wasn't going to take a 3 year 50m deal with the warriors…. Turned down a 2 for 48m prior to the start of the 23/24 season. And if you wanna water down the contract because of taxes from CA, it would be about 24m a year.
But he's being paid what… roughly 17m/year from the Mavs lol…
Hes our third
I appreciate you Alex! Keep grinding bra
I can see a play where Lively/Pj runs a screen for Luka, and Pj/lively runs an offball screen for Klay or Kyrie leaving the other wide open for a 3, leaving lively or pj open for a dunk, or leaving Luka with a mis match
Absolutely. No. Perimeter. Defense. On. The. Mavs.
He may not be at his peak but all he has to do is space the floor and not be a liability on defense. The problem was he couldn't be even that on GSW. Hopefully Luka and Kyrie's gravity can open him up for easier shots and Gafford and Lively can cover up his defensive lapses when his man blows by him.
It’s not so much overthinking, but the fact that Mavs fans need to temper and fully understand what was happening to Klay last season. The Klay doesn’t have the pressure of 2nd option trope pretty much tells me you didn’t understand. go back and look at Klay’s games from February to the end. He’s not starting as much, he’s being limited to below 30 mpg, and he actually wasn’t quite as streaky as he was before the All-star break. You do not realize how many bad shots the warriors allowed cause they were trying to get him out of a funk. Which given how much frustration THJ faced from Mav’s fans for being streaky makes me worry for Klay. The other issue is talking about offball and screens. That’s not really the Mavs style, but I do hope they improve a lot in that area. I thought after the 22 WCF they would have learned and added more motion/sets. Unfortunately you can see form the finals this year they haven’t improved a lot in adding diversity/adaptability to their offense. I know fans like to complain about the teams perimeter shooting, but equally to blame was Luka/Kyrie allowing themselves to forced into really bad shot selections form the 3.
Klay was probably better last season than people gave him credit for, but all the same, I’m expecting a regression. Maybe the change inspires him though.
He said the word!!! Heliocentric!!
