In this video we discuss the ability of Lauri Markkanen intentionally signing his contract extension with the Utah Jazz after August 6 in order to ensure his name can stay out of trade rumors for the entirety of the 2024-2025 NBA season. If he likes to sign on the sixth, then he risks having his name thrown about in trade, talks previous to the deadline in February due to the final day of the trade deadline, being perfectly six months after he is capable of signing his extension.

that was an interesting segment. One other aspect was one of the other guys on the show said Danny would modify the offer if Lauri doesn't sign on the date to reduce it. In addition, he pointed out most teams have no or little cap space and thus the treat of not signing and becoming a free agent is not there and the bonus of modifying the existing contract would be lost. Thus he believes Lauri has no choice but to do what Danny wants and sign on the deadline so he still can be traded at the trade deadline.

Tanking mindset is a locker room death knell . It rarely works out the way you want. Let’s roll with what we got. Lauri loves it here in Utah why would we discourage that. pay him, keep him and build around him. The alternative is a crap shoot. Let’s let the young guys develop and see what happens. we will most likely be a lottery team and that’s ok.
The jazz are in control and Laurie knows this and has played his cards accordingly. That’s what makes it harder for the jazz not for Laurie. As a player you work hard to earn your value or pay 💰
Atleast players should have earned their contract.
The only thing really at stake money wise is about 15mm on Laurie’s end.
IMO: Laurie should structure a contract that is team friendly. Brunson did it and left over 100m on the table. Suspect the Knicks will thrive as a team because they have flexibility to have a real team.
Jazz should keep Laurie because it won’t matter if Jazz are good or bad. All the talk about tanking doesn’t change squat with the Jazz odds in the lottery.
I actually think the Jazz being good increases their value and also their odds of they learn to win when it matters. Beat the wolves and cavs and help other teams do the same. Let those picks be the real value. Each pick represent a percentage and the more the merrier. Logic say that the jazz pick is of the most value. It’s the same fixed value m!!!
The problem with tanking is the jazz may lose games that they should want to win. Having two pick in your favor versus 🆚 your own means your better off winning.
What we are doing here is threading the needle 💉.
At some point the jazz will self sabotage again if they clearly see it is necessary.
Laurie can make the most money 💰 always with the jazz. Maybe he just resigns and doesn’t extend . Take the max 1 yr lump sum and resign with jazz in free agency. They hold his bird rights. They can also just trade him at the higher value come Feb. forget the extension. Let teams trade for his bird rights and sweat it out 😅
Risk is getting injured 🤕
Laurie might want that extension and call it good 😊
