RJ Barrett Is Facing An IMPOSSIBLE Task For The Raptors This Season

RJ Barrett took his game to another level after being acquired by the Toronto Raptors in a trade with the New York Knicks and fans are wondering how much if this he can sustain into the new season. If the Mississauga natives Olympic debut with Team Canada at Paris 2024 is any indication, RJ is ready to take the new season in stride but with such statistical excellence to live up to, Barrett faces the impossible task of maintaining that level. What should Raptors fans really expect from him next season? Jacob Gramegna weighs in today on Amateur Hour Sports.

  1. Great video. It makes me so happy to see RJ get the attention he deserves for the growth he’s shown since coming to Tor. This trade may have changed the trajectory of his legacy.

I just subscribed. I really appreciate your candor. Refreshing to see a content creator not letting previous opinions obscure his perspective. I respect that a lot. You hit the nail on the head as well. Thibs wants players to play a designated role in his system. It doesn’t allow for every player’s skill set. Coach K said the Knicks were using RJ wrong. Darko said he studied film of Duke and Team Canada to see how RJ likes to play and we can see the results. Even when RJ played for Nick Nurse in the Olympic Qualifiers one can see how free he looked. Toronto has a bright future with RJ/Scottie/IQ/Dick. Masai nailed this one.

  2. I think what's missed is that New York asked RJ to do VERY unnatural things to his form. He's a SG and NYK often used him at the 4 & 3 due to the oft injured status of Julius Randle and others and Coach Thibs using players to a system and no two their strengths. Raps are going to play him naturally as they have already shown to do. RJ is built to be an Allstar at the SG spot as he's slightly oversized and gifted athletically with a good shooting stroke. He cannot be a PF. I think RJ is capable of being everything we asked of Demar but with better defence – he's bigger wider and longer than D-Ro. I could see him averaging 28 ppg this season. He didn't even have a training camp with us and had a rookie HC. and still went off. I think we actually don't really know his ceiling used correctly and with consistent present at the PG spot – because we still used Dennis a lot last year until RJ was given all that extra time to deal with his Brother's passing. IQ wasn't really ready last year for the time he got. Don't sleep on RJ. Raps won that trade by a chunk. Worry about the Raps lack of front court. They need a PF and move Scottie to 3 where her'll really shine.

  3. I have worked for a variety of organizations in my (non sports) career. I felt some organizations held me back, and other organizations allowed me to thrive. How are nba teams different? Maybe RJ is allowed to thrive here?

  4. RJ is ok ….will close his eyes and get 15 points a game. But two things here . First RJ numbers be it good means nothing on a losing team. Second RJ numbers will come down to his ability cause iq and Barnes will be dominating the ball come this season. So his efficiency will be the big question again. This has being the problem with him his whole career.

  5. Actually a lot of us RJ fans expected this jump in his performance and shooting splits after leaving the Knicks, cause if you understand context you'd realize that his shooting percentages on the Knicks where low cause RJ is a Slasher that constantly had Randle and Robertson clogging up the paint. The RJ we got on the Raps last season and are getting on team Canada right now is the true RJ. Next season RJ will keep up this level of performance and percentages on a Raptors team that has more players on the perimeter and only one center in the paint.
