People will say Kawamura shot them out of the game, and maybe. But Japan didn’t sub in other 3 point shooters until the final minute of OT. Genuinely, the Japanese players on the court can’t shoot, create their own shots or score inside. Hawkinson can, but he would’ve been doubled by Wemby and Gobert in the paint. Yuta did little to nothing in terms of shooting this game. Kawamura did chuck a ton, but there was genuinely no other choice. If you look at the statistics of some of these Japanese players last season, then you’d throw up shots too. I think Hugh Watanabe and Yoshii literally averaged like one or two points on 30% shooting the entire season.

The 4 pt play – That was a very light touch on the hip at best. There’d be a lot more fouls called if that’s the standard for a foul. The French player didn’t appear to be hindered at all or call for a foul. But agree it was dumb for Kawamura put himself in that position to potentially foul at all – should have just let him shoot it without contesting.
What a shame – he carried the Japan team with some big plays on both ends after Rui got rejected. 6 boards at 5″8 is some effort and he was all over the court, albeit with a bit too much hero ball (but Japan wasn’t exactly overflowing with shot creating talent – Watanabe was quiet).
Also shoutout to Hawkinson for a massive effort inside against Gobert and Wemby. Thumbs down to Rui for a ridiculous foul after already having one unsportsmanlike foul.
