They had a 33 million dollar extension in place. Pitino then went and signed Travis Knight at the last minute. It put the Celtics over the cap as the league decided they couldn’t extend Fox after the deal
Fox then went to sign w the Lakers for a 1 million dollar deal as it was late in FA and most teams had used their cap space

Everybody is being way too harsh in here. He’s a Laker, I get that but — Rick Fox was a lot of fun while he was here and was a fan favorite for a short while. Was saddled with years of Celtics’ teams with identity issues, disappointing youth, elder free agents and poor coaching yet showed incredible hustle on a night to night basis.
Fox’s defense improved every single year while he was here (an immediately elite lane defender out of school), had a really nice interior game and basically carried our paltry second unit on his back from 92-94.
Would have been a nice player for us during the Pierce years the same way he was a nice player during the Shaq & Kobe years, but of course Pitino let him walk to a rival.
It’s almost like nobody in here is old enough to remember being excited he was in EDDIE.
