[Golliver] In passionate comments, South Sudan’s Luol Deng said referees treated his players differently than Serbia: “It’s a narrative and a stigma that’s out there that African players are aggressive… I don’t know why there’s no African referees in the Olympics. It’s 2024.”

Luol Complaing
Those Deng refs
LMAO
They didn’t even knock a kidney out this time, South Sudan washed?
Oh boy
LOL
Last time when South Sudan and Serbia played Serbian player lost kidney and he is complaining that there is stigma that they are aggressive.
Lets be real there were some calls that shouldn’t be called but there was same number of calls that should be called and they didn’t, espiccaly travels and fouls on Milutinov.
bro you built up so much goodwill don’t do this
Serbians, a notoriously popular nation in the West
SSD played with heart, but Serbia could’ve shot about 20 more FTs tonight.

Good riddance to you and your whiny ass clown of a coach
Love you Luol and what you did for the sport and the SSD team was phenomenal and you should be super proud of them
but uhhhhh you might wanna sit this one out homie lmao refs aint why you lost
I watched two South Sudan games. They definitely played quite physically to make up for some of the talent disparity. I was rooting for them to advance. They weren’t treated unfairly in my eyes.
Well yeah they were treated difrently…one team fouled a hell of a lot more than the other.
Like Jesus only stat watchers would actually complain that SSD was the one getting screwed by the refs.
saw quite a few no-calls on very obvious fouls from South Sudan players. Deng’s just salty
>I don’t know why there’s no African referees in the Olympics
If he really cares about African referees he should’ve said something before the tournament started.
Just say what you really mean, man: ”I don’t know why there’s no referees that can be biased towards me in the Olympics.”
I think it’s kind of funny not even considering how each team plays the game. Serbia battles inside the perimeter and naturally more fouls are committed if you are agressive in the paint. Sudan is a great 3pt shooting team but, with that, also comes with less foul calls.
Don’t get me even started about the lost kidney lol
Mitch Kupchack lowkey one of the greatest philanthropists of our lifetimes.
He gifted 2% of South Sudan’s gdp to them as charity.
SSD is way too physical though. they got away a bit against the US, i think the calls are overall fair.
incoming: notoriously levelheaded Serbs
It’s really weird to hear one week “we didn’t even have indoor basketball courts to train on” and the next week “why aren’t there African referees in the Olympics?”
I get not every country is in the exact same position as South Soudan, but the point is the infrastructure of the sport is being built all over Africa right now. Take this with a grain of salt, because I’m mostly operating off of what friends / coworkers from these countries have said and some basic figures, and I’ve never been to these countries, but outside of maybe Egypt, South Africa, Algeria, and Nigeria – there are very few countries in Africa with the population AND basketball infrastructure quality that would warrant them taking many refs from Africa.
Serbia got credit with refs now? They literally set us up tonight with that terrible ref from Bosnia.
The Olympic basketball refs. Famously biased towards white athletes for sure.
lol South Sudan got a lot of leeway with how they played defense idk lu
Be African team
Play aggressive
Get called for foul
Blame racism

Profit?
I was in the stadium and watched the game. Completly bullshit to play the victim card. The coach was crying every play and the refs did not favor Serbi at all. Great tourney from South Sudan and be proud of the team, but dont go out being a sore loser.
Yes, the referees did treat the South Sudan differently than Serbia. They didn’t call a double digit number of clear fouls in the paint by the Sudanese defense, sometimes multiple in a single possession, which led to free “turnovers”, and which is the main reason why the game was so close until so late. They did them a major favor and the ungrateful sob not only doesn’t say thank you but thinks it’s ok to complain.
Better leave the race card at home on this one.
as compared to a peaceful country of Serbia
Royal Ivey is tweeting stuff like “Serbia not beating Australia” & falling for ppl baiting him. Someone should take his phone until he cools down cause this ain’t the way.
I was pulling for SSD and I didn’t feel this way. The officials weren’t biased, they missed calls for both teams.
It’s 2024 why do we even have problems anymore shouldn’t they have all been figured out. I mean two thousand and twenty four years and we haven’t fixed everything yet??
LuoL!
Big losses are difficult especially when you worked so hard to get there. Emotions run high and you say things in the moment you wouldn’t have otherwise said in a more calm and neutral state of mind. Deng did so much for this team with limited resources and lack of infrastructure. Things will get better and I anticipate we will see more African teams playing at a high level in FIBA competitions.
Tony Brothers reffing in the Olympics would be a loss for literally eveyone
I see Luol Deng hasn’t forgotten his NBA roots by just blaming the refs for why your team lost
Lol. Lmao even.
Absolute crock of shit, South Sudan players were super physical and aggressive. Imho they weren’t called for fouls enough tonight.
Stop.
Classic victim card played
Luol Deng needs to settle down. Wtf man
Lose = race card
Let’s make everything about race.
LuLoL Deng
31 to 6 free throw disparity and South Sudan took just as many shots in the paint.
Interesting disparity.
Oh well, USA will still win Gold and Serbia won’t even medal 😎
