    That flash screen of starting five is a huge deal for star players. IMO Luka, Kyrie, Klay, PJ, and Gafford (Lively will become undeniable star soon then him obviously) start.

    In 3-4 mins get Klay out and bring Naji in. First 3-4 mins of lesser defense is not going to kill the game. More often than not Mavs would put up more points in this stretch.

    Closing is where the situation dictates who closes the game – Klay or Naji.

    Is there a difference between 3rd best and 2nd/3rd most important to winning? D-Live seems essential to winning right behind Luka and not even sure about Kyrie?!?

    I think klays defense is underrated but it may be best to stagger his minutes so that he's always on the floor when luka sits

    The question about starting Klay is really about his ability to play defense. His offense is not in question. Every player has a plus minus balance against their regular matchups. Luka will out score just about anyone that he is matched up against. Kyrie will also have a positive plus minus. If we were dealing with the Klay Thompson from five years ago, he would definitely be able to defend the other team's best guard and out score them. The reality is that for Luka, Kyrie, and Klay to maximize their offensive performance they will sacrifice something on the defense, So, depending on the match ups in every game and if coach Kidd thinks we need more defense he will substitute in Naji Marshall or Quentin Grimes. It may not be that the substitution will always be for Klay, it could be for Kyrie or even Luka. I really expect Kidd to have a rotation of ten players for most of the regular season games with a lot of different lineups to see what combinations work for different situations. So, who starts is not that important, what matter is the minutes each player gets. The main thing Kidd needs to figure out is who will be in the closing lineups.

    Will Klay start? Part of the answer to this lies in the promises made to him before he signed with the Mavs as a free agent. If he was promised a starting job, then that's what he should get. My preference is that Quentin Grimes of '22-'23 gets the start and Klay comes in relief. Two big if's there. 1. is QG able to recover his mojo from that great season with the Knicks and 2. Would Klay relish the chance to light it up with the second unit off the bench.

    I am going to preface this take as an idea that I had considered for the upcoming season that I think would make our team extremely formidable. We have a rotation that just about all could start for another team in the NBA depending on their needs. Our main issue is how do we balance a solid offense to start the game and still have a defense that can get a few stops. Our bench unit will be one of the better benches in the NBA no matter what just by who we have. My idea is to let either Grimes or Marshall start and let Kyrie come off the bench. You would have solid defense on both squads, someone who has the ability to give a tough start to the best player on the other team for the most part and Kyrie would be a shoe-in for 6th man of the year as he would more than likely be in the closing line-up. I love Kyrie on this team and am more than happy with what he has done with us. I am not trying to disrespect him at all by saying this. I just feel this would create more potential as having Kyrie in the second unit would make our bench the best in the NBA. I know it would be a hard sell but I feel the outcome would favor us to win a chip.

    Everyone keeps saying djj was an elite defender… his defensive rating was 116.3… that's average and i believe Klay will be just as gd.
