  1. but fiba organizes summer olympic basketball so that would make the make the olympics the 2024 fiba tournament which makes usa the current world champions, no?

  2. This argument is so dumb. The Celtics would wipe any team, and you know what, so would the Mavs. Probably even without Luka, and the Celtics without Kristaps. I mean, Sasha Vezenkov was a fucking Euroleague MVP and literally couldn’t touch the floor in the NBA. That is how much of a gap there is in talent between the two leagues. If we sent the Celtics to the FIBA cup we would blow every team out by 50, it’s not close. Not to mention the US didn’t even send their best players to the world cup.

Are we really upset of the name of the title they won?

I thought smoking drugs was illegal in Germany?

Clearly Olympics >> than World Cup title. Mission Accomplished.. raise the banners on our aircraft carriers! 😅

It’s all semantics. Nobody cares. The Americans who care about the “world champion” title are viewed as arrogant, the foreigners who care about the specifics of the “word champion” title are viewed as pompous. It’s all a “well actually” contest because people want to be right on the internet, and this back and forth really puts on display how the 2 cultures are (American vs European) that goes back a long way even outside of sports.

End of the day, it doesn’t matter. Nobody is getting in trouble for labeling themselves, and it’s not hurting anyone. It’s so unimportant and I can’t believe people think they have to be right on this just because Noah Lyles made a comment over a year ago like he’s the officiant on this subject.

Well they’re not wrong you know? One could argue that the Olympics is a more prestigious tournament and harder to win, but it’s not called world cup. It’s just a matter of names, not about prestige

Listen this might feel stupid and like a waste of time. But all this arguing is a good thing. Maybe we are going to get a basketball champions league one day which is going to be awesome. Prob not a champions league like UEFA where it’s ongoing but maybe an annual or every few years tournament of league winners.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup is used as qualification for the Olympics.

  10. They can call themselves world champs all they want, everyone knows that 1) the only international tournament players care about is the Olympics 2) the best club team in the world is the Boston Celtics.

Anyone can declare the winner of their tournament or match the “world champion” ffs. I’m pretty sure boxing has 100 world champions right now.

The NBA, being the league where all of the best talent from around the globe plays, has more right to declare their champion the “World Champion” than damn FIBA imo. But they can both do it anyway.

Some people just want to grant more legitimacy to FIBA because it has “international” in the name but at the end of the day it’s just a room full of old dudes who host a less watched tournament with fewer of the top international talents competing than compete in the NBA playoffs.

You should see the community note that every country in Europe combined got more gold medals than the US so the US isnt actually good at the olympics

Germany couldn’t handle the grind of an SEC schedule.
