Who’s the most underrated Nugget in franchise history?

I’ve seen this going around other teams subreddits and r/NBATALK, player with the most upvotes in the comments (combined) wins the category.

Personally as a ABA guy my first thought is Ralph Simpson
    5× ABA All-Star (1972–1976)
    All-ABA First Team (1976)
    2× All-ABA Second Team (1972, 1973)

David Thompson had a 73 point game and was Jordan’s childhood hero.

  3. babybabayyy

Chauncey Billups low-key. A top 5 talent to ever play for the nuggets and also helped lead the team to their first ever WCF in the Melo era

  4. Gary “Gary Harris” Harris

    But for real, David Thompson

  5. LotharBot

Bobby Jones, “The Secretary Of Defense”.

In his 4 years in Denver (spanning the ABA/NBA merger) he finished second in ROY, second and fourth in MVP, 3x all-star, 4x all-defense first team, and led the league in fg% three times. He averaged 14.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.9 blocks (these last 2 numbers should get your attention.)

And he rarely gets mentioned on any sort of all-time Nuggets lists, even “underrated” lists.

Wilson Chandler. Dude was just a solid all around player that left it all on the court.

Not sure how DT is underrated. He was widely regarded as the greatest or second greatest Nugget for decades. Still regarded by many including myself as the second greatest Nugget. Unknown and underrated are not the same thing.

  8. Sadly Alex English, and hear me out. He is so much better than just being one of the best Nuggets. He was very dependable and rarely if ever gets brought up as an all timer.

Ty Lawson. Wish he could just be a functioning drunk

DT cannot be the answer unless our fanbase is failing to consider him an all time top-5 Nugget. I kinda think most folks know he’s a bad bad man. If I’m wrong, then by all means, put him here. But for me, the guys who don’t get enough shine are some of those 90’s guys.

Laphonso Ellis for sure, and he’s my top answer to this question

    Bryant Stith for sure

    Even Robert Pack

These guys were fucking ballers, so much heart.

Otherwise, I think folks have forgotten how good Kiki Vandeweigh was. And Calvin Natt.

Also, don’t get me started on TR Dunn. A demon.

And finally, one of the top triple-double machines of all time. Fat Lever was a great player.

I think Fat Lever would be my choice. He is 13th in NBA history for Triple Doubles, and I don’t think outside of Nuggets Nation, most really wouldn’t know much about him. He is ranked 100th in NBA history for VORP, and is the 9th best Nuggets for Win shares.

Ima throw in Danilo Gallinari and “The Manimal” Kenneth Faried. “Gallo” surprised me with how well he contributed when he played for us after the melo trade. He was our bright spot at that time. The manimal I don’t think I have to say much but he’s basically the definition of under appreciated

Nick Van Exel is my favorite Nugget of all time after Jokic.

  14. spizcraft

Nene. Nuggets franchise ranks 8th in games played, 9th in minutes played, 8th in rebounds, 6th in steals, 9th in blocks, 3rd in FG%, 7th in WS, 9th in VORP. I recently read an article about how his team’s REB% was always much better when he was on the court, even if his individual REB% wasn’t anything special, and he said it was because he always boxed out and didn’t care what his individual stats were. He just played winning basketball. And he did it all with one nut.

I just look at the graph wondering where Melo is gonna end up.

  16. I don’t think you can say anyone in the HOF or whose Nuggets jersey is retired is underrated. I came here to say Fat or Andre Miller but I may have convinced myself that it’s Marcus Camby. Both Miller and Camby should get HOF consideration and neither even get a whisper.

  17. fragophobe

Joe Kopicki – if he touched the floor, it meant we were winning that game.

  18. skylinerainbow

Underrated by denver fans or by the NBA?

  19. Pal_Smurch

Not a Nugget; but a Denver Rocket, Spencer Haywood. I saw him play, and he was a man among boys.
