1992 NBA Sacramento Kings at Golden State Warriors, April 3, 1992, Marciulionis-Spud Webb Duel

SAC 116, GSW 124 OT – On April 3, 1992, the Golden State Warriors hosted the Sacramento Kings in a thrilling overtime matchup that ended with the Warriors emerging victorious 124-116.

This match-up was highly anticipated, featuring a clash between former Run TMC teammates Mitch, Tim, and Chris.

Player of the game:
Sarunas Marciulionis: 32 PTS, 12-20 FGM, 60 FG%, 1-1 3PM, 7-8 FTM, 8 REB, 9 AST, 1 STL

Notable performance:
Spud Webb: 27 PTS, 10-16 FGM, 63 FG%, 4-5 3PM, 80 3P%, 5 REB, 8 AST, 2 STL

This so-called “plumber” from the 80’s era stands at just 5-foot-6, can both dunk and shoot, skillfully evading shot blockers. And, he also happens to be my older brother’s favorite player.

The game was tightly contested, with notable performances from both sides. For the Kings, Spud Webb dazzled with 27 points and a hot shooting hand from beyond the arc, going 4-of-5 on 3-point attempts. Mitch Richmond added 23 points, and Wayman Tisdale chipped in 21 points. Despite Webb’s impressive shooting and contributions from his teammates, the Kings couldn’t outlast the Warriors in overtime. The Warriors’ Sarunas Marciulionis had a standout performance, leading all scorers with 32 points, while Chris Mullin added 27 points and Tim Hardaway contributed 17.

While the 5-foot-6 Spud Webb is famously remembered for his dramatic victory over Dominique Wilkins in the 1986 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, he was also an underrated playmaker with remarkable improvements in his shooting. During his tenure with the Kings, Webb elevated his 3-point shooting percentage from a mediocre 1.00% to an impressive 40%, highlighting his significant development as a shooter. He was also a reliable midrange shooter, making 45% of his attempts, with many of those shots being highly-contested due to his dimunitive size.
