Oscar Robertson says Russell Westbrook has gotten an unfair shake in the NBA

“For some strange reason, I don’t know why they want to keep blaming everything that happens on him… When he plays he is dynamic, he gives the team a spark. Then all of a sudden they don’t care for him, they don’t want him.”

For some strange reason, he’s never won a championship.

  2. ObiOneKenobae

Big O just doesn’t get it. Westbrook undermines his teams by getting his teammates open and giving them the ball.

If westbrook and saric can reinvigorate denvers bench then colorado will give them both state holidays

The thing is he’s a great player just not a great team player. On top of everything else his skill is based on his athleticism which is only declining every year.

I think he’s played in a way that draws everyone’s attention towards him his whole career. If it’s working it’s awesome, if it’s not he won’t make any adjustments to work around it. He’s just gonna be Russ and do Russ stuff.

It’s pretty easy to see why he’s annoying imo

I was thinking he got more of an unfair shimmy lol

Yeah his hundreds of millions, mvp award, and countless honors are so unfair.

Winning the MVP (while obviously not a bad thing for his legacy), came with the side effect of putting a microscope on him, as well as expectations and comparisons that wouldn’t otherwise have been there.

The microscope really exposed a lot of facets of his game (shooting, off-ball), which then quickly became apparent were not just not elite, but are actively awful.

In parts of his game, you could make strong arguments he’s amongst the best ever, but his holes are just so massive that if you’re comparing him to the peer group of MVP/All Timer caliber players, it’s naturally going to elicit a reaction that he doesn’t deserve to be in that conversation.

Realistically his conversation should have always been comparing him amongst other high quality all stars – with whom he would shine brightly in many ways and the team success expectations would have been much lower.

Love watching him play, as long as it’s not for my team.

Weird. Big O Defends Westbrook, but essentially said all you had to do was guard Steph close and put a hand in his face.

HOF or not, he is not watching the same games.

Russ is a better player than the media gives him credit for

But Russ is a worse player than what he thinks he is

Gotta find that balance of self-confidence and self-awareness

I’ll probably be wrong but my gut says he’s capable of replacing a lot of what Bruce brown brought them

i think the semi-revisionist history that he didn’t deserve his mvp has been unfortunate

It’s because fans found out it’s easy to get under his skin. And with social media you totally can. People are drawn to that like moths to the flame. Same with Durant. People love to needle people more successful because it makes them feel better about themselves. Sad but true.

“I went to see him when he broke my record in Oklahoma,”

In 2016-2017? When was the last time you seen him. Big O must only watch games that come on NBA replay

Westbrook is a great basketball player, but today’s game requires higher IQ and correct rotation, which he fails at.

As a certified Westbrook hater, I think Rus has gotten a pretty fair shake. He won an MVP, put up some historic numbers, and made a ton of all star games.

That doesn’t stop him from being a super inefficient shooter and terrible off-ball player. I always believed no team with him as the #1 option could feasibly win a championship.

Now in the twilight of his career, is he gonna lean into the spark plug creator that made him an all-star, or the ball-centric shot chucker that made me a hater? Both sides will be aspects of his legacy regardless.

If russ had thicker skin he’d be loved by everyone. It’s the sensitive players who get petty that sticks with people. It’s why the westbrick meme will never die… it still triggers the f out of him every time

Unless you really annoy the players, basically any player who was above average at some point will always get the benefit of the doubt from the rest of the league

I always thought he’d turn the corner and not be caught up in getting his. Imo if he could have done that, he’d be among the top of this generations players. Unfortunately (fortunately for a spurs fan) he never could “get over himself” on the court and never did that.

  21. Oscar Robertson is one of those old retired players that loves to throw shade on the current generation.

Except for Westbrook. He loves Westbrook because he reminds him of himself, and the whole triple double shit brought Oscar Robertson back into the general NBA media conversation.

Westbrook at his peak raised the floor of any team he was on. But also lowered the ceiling of any team that had elite talent surrounding him. That’s why he can seem to be both overrated and underrated.

  22. Shinnobiwan

If OKC were committed to building a squad around him in his prime, they could have contended.

His luck: he went to a small market, and only the elite of the greats were to switch teams and succeed while leading different squads.

Oscar was able to team up with KAJ to win his.

  23. RadicalRectangle

As a more casual NBA fan who has gotten much more invested in the last couple seasons, I’m stoked Russ is coming to Denver, and I’m looking forward to getting to see him play live. I am the only one of my friends that feels this way.

  24. He can’t shoot. So is Ben Simmons thats a liability in today nba.

  25. Thisdoessuck

He also doesn’t help himself out. There are so many instances of him just being a dick. I’m not old enough to remember Oscar Robertson so I don’t know how he was perceived around the league. But Westbrook also seems to be involved in petty arguments (don’t call me Westbrick)

  26. Far-Ad-8833

Obviously, the Nuggets have a different view. They are depending to him to create the spark they need and hoping he will be there for many years.

  27. No_Function8686

There is a reason Russ is on his 6th NBA team

  28. Him and harden will never win a ring, never. I’ll tattoo either name on my ass if they do
