Houston Rockets View Amen Thompson As Positionless
The Houston Rockets are embracing Amen Thompson’s positional versatility, which could both complicate and enhance their lineup configurations. Selected in the draft with high expectations, Thompson has been utilized across various positions, reflecting his unique skill set that defies traditional roles. According to Kelly Iko of The Athletic, Thompson spent about ninety percent of his rookie minutes at shooting guard or small forward, with the remaining time at point guard.
The addition of Reed Sheppard at No. 3 in the draft provides the Rockets with further flexibility, allowing Thompson to continue developing into a player who can adapt to multiple roles on the floor. Thompson’s ability to share ballhandling duties with Sheppard could lead to dynamic and unpredictable offensive schemes.
“The consensus from the coaching staff is that Thompson is a basketball player first, rather than having him shoehorned into a specific role,” wrote Iko. Head Coach Ime Udoka is expected to continue this approach, viewing Thompson as a ballhandling wing who can serve as either a primary or secondary creator.
In his rookie season, Thompson averaged 9.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.3 steals across 62 games. While his shooting percentages—13.8 percent from three-point range and 68.4 percent from the free-throw line—indicate areas for improvement, Thompson’s overall impact on the game goes beyond traditional metrics.
