Why Role Players are Getting So Expensive
Throughout the offseason, we’ve seen role players in the NBA receiving some head-scratchingly large contracts. Isaiah Hartenstein secured a $87M deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope nabbed a $66M deal with the Orlando Magic, and Nic Claxton got a $99M deal with the Brooklyn Nets.
Perhaps the largest contract for a role player we’ve seen is for OG Anunoby, who will be making upwards of $40M per year on average for the New York Knicks.
So why, all of a sudden, are we seeing role players getting so much money? Is this anything new? The truth is, as is the case with most things, that it’s more complicated than just “overpaid or not”. In this NBA video essay, we get to the bottom of it.

Small typo at 7:41, the third line should say βyear 3β. Sorry about that!
Idc how many videos you make all of these are overpays idk if its 33% or 12% its ridiculous. Some of these dudes donβt even average 12/5 and are getting paid Buku cashβ¦ itβs ridiculous
I really enjoyed this. I don't mind more of this type of videos.
Role players help championships more than the stars doβ¦pay needs to go up role players and lower for starsβ¦guys need reality checks, being popular donβt win games, it sells tickets, thatβs all
the salary cap increasing every offseason doesnβt help
lol players earn pennis compared to these owners/companies
the simple answer is that the game is evolving. role players now and days are asked to do alot more for teams than they used to.
Dwight Howard back in the League
Tobias is going down in history as the greatest bag chaser everππππ Klay should have talked to Tobias agent if he really wanted a bag
I always use that salary cap spike point in GOAT debate
To be entirely honest, going by what I've heard about Mr Pippen's payroll. If you are getting more than him, relative to inflation, without having the record of a 90's Chicago Bull player. In my general opinion, with these details in mind, you are overpaid. No two ways about it.
could argue that role players are finally paid what theyre worth
10:07 i like this type of content just as much!
Great video, didnt really think about it this way, keep going
I agree, the Nets got a steal with the Claxton contract
I think the answer is simple: aaron gordon. GMs are now looking at role players as the missing piece to create championship teams, not borderline stars like Zach Lavine and Bradley Beal.
Great video
Whatever it take to win.
Role players, coaches, assitant coaches, janitors … whatever
The reason they are getting opd is simple execs suck. The end.
