NBA insiders with Scoot ranked as better prospect than Sharpe

Did anyone else listen to Mike Richman from Locked on Blazers mention how Scoot is still rated a better prospect than Sharpe by some NBA insiders? Josh Lloyd of Locked on Fantasy Basketball had Scoot higher.

Sam Vecenie of The Athletic ranked Scoot the 17th-best prospect under 24, with Sharpe not included in the top 24. In the linked YouTube video, he gave Scoot a pass as a teenage point guard and basically downgraded his assessment from all-NBA prospect to all-star prospect.

I found it pretty interesting, as there seems to be a decent consensus among Blazers aficionados that Sharpe is the better prospect. I guess I understand why some might still have a floor general ranked higher than a more off-ball talent, but Sharpe showed some on-ball flashes too when forced because of injuries. I still have him as the Blazers best chance as a star, but the national love for Scoot also warms my heart.

  1. I think the NBA experts lack any real dedication to getting to know this team right now. And unfortunately, Shae doesn’t get a lot of eyeballs outside our market. Scoot has the bigger name being the #3 pick last year, but I honestly feel like that will change this season. Shae is going to have a scoring breakout year, while Scoot will improve as well.

prospect pedigree has a lot to do with it. a lot of the takes i see from insiders are informed from years of ranking these guys. Shaedon had a quick rise to the top of his class but was still relatively unknown. then he goes to Kentucky and doesn’t play, doesn’t play in summer league cuz of injury and then got up with the Blazers who have been tanking. plus he didn’t make team Canada. so at every turn where he has had an opportunity on a bigger national stage than the Rose Garden floor he’s been out for one reason or another. I doubt a lot of them actually pay attention to what the blazers are doing.

Scoot on the other hand was touted as a number 1 pick type player. he really struggled last year but his end of season numbers weren’t that bad for his class & there’s all kinds of easy excuses for a 19 year old point guard.

personally, i think they’re both gonna be good players and deserve to be on this list.

It’s difficult for me to compare them as prospects because IMO they have opposite questions to be answered. The Blazers will need 1 or both to become Stars/Superstars for this rebuild to work.

With Scoot, I firmly believe he has the mentality to be a star, but I’m unsure if he has the talent to do it. Sharpe has the opposite issues. He has all the talent in the world, but I’m not sure he has the mentality necessary to be a star.

I can see why someone would have Scoot over Sharpe. Scoot is still young, talent can be developed. Mentality on the other hand is much harder to change. It’s generally a core part of someone personality.

Because his improvement last year was a bit lackluster. Might have been injuries, but still

I would have to see where these journalists rank Sebastian Telfair before I can trust them.

Tbh I think this sub rates sharpe a little higher than most. Like I see him being a very good player on the level of CJ, just a tier below “all star”
