I remember being at the Alamodome for the 1994 NBA Draft party. When Pop came out to announce the drafting the arena broke out in chants of “CHARLIE WARD! CHARLIE WARD!” He instead announces they’re taking Bill Curley as a backup for Robinson. The arena booed him mercilessly.I remember seeing his face in the jumbotron and he has this upset look in his face and he walked off the stage.
Little did any of us know he’d flip Curley to Detroit to get Sean back which was a genius move in hindsight. Curley was often injured. Charlie Ward was not the answer either.
I’ve been watching the Spurs since the mid-80’s and a San Antonio native. Pop definitely took this franchise places that it would never even dreamed of.
